    OUR STORY

Dolce Suono Ensemble (DSE), founded in 2005 by flutist Mimi Stillman, is a powerful force in the world of chamber music and a major contributor to the cultural life of Philadelphia.

“All programs should have this much to say and say it so well.”

DAVID PATRICK STEARNS, THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER

“Dolce Suono Ensemble eloquently advocates for new music.” CORINNA DA FONSECA-WOLLHEIM, THE NEW YORK TIMES

    www.dolcesuono.com

DSE’s mission is to enrich and inform people’s lives through chamber music. Our curatorial vision sets the music in its broadest cultural context, with projects innovative and profound.

DSE, comprised of some of today’s most dynamic artists, has garnered critical acclaim for its performances on our home series Dolce Suono Ensemble Presents and at prestigious international venues, and for its recordings and media broadcasts.

Our repertoire spans Baroque to new music, with 32 world premieres in our first nine seasons by composers including Richard Danielpour, Fang Man, David Ludwig, Steven Mackey, Shulamit Ran, and Steven Stucky. We have welcomed guest artists including Eric Owens, Anthony Newman, and Lucy Shelton.

We enjoy a partnership with Washington National Opera’s Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program at the invitation of Plácido Domingo.

DSE’s strong commitment to engaging new audiences includes our project “Música en tus Manos” (Music in Your Hands), an engagement initiative with the Latino community of Philadelphia for which we won the Knight Arts Challenge 2013.

DSE’s project highlights include Mahler 100 / Schoenberg 60, Debussy in Our Midst, Samuel Barber at 100, and programs exploring the Baroque trio sonata, Russian music, the Holocaust, and connections with visual art.

    A B O U T MIMI STILLMAN

As Artistic and Executive Director of Dolce Suono Ensemble, Mimi Stillman has presided over its establishment as a highly regarded pioneering force in the music world.

One of today’s most celebrated flutists, she has been hailed by The New York Times as “a consummate and charismatic performer.” Acclaimed for her dazzling artistry, technical brilliance, and penetrating interpretation, she has performed as soloist with orchestras including The Philadelphia Orchestra and Bach Collegium Stuttgart, and as recitalist and chamber musician at venues including Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, and throughout the U.S., Europe, Israel, and Mexico.

At age 12, Ms. Stillman was the youngest wind player ever admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music, where she studied with Julius Baker and Jeffrey Khaner. A Yamaha Performing Artist, she was the youngest wind player ever to win Young Concert Artists. An active recording artist, she has made CDs for EMI, Innova Recordings, Centaur, and Albany, and recorded a film score for Kevin Bacon. Ms. Stillman holds an MA in history from the University of Pennsylvania and is a published author on music and history.

Ms. Stillman has given masterclasses at institutions including the Eastman School of Music, University of California, and Cornell University. She teaches at the Curtis Institute of Music Summerfest and is Distinguished Faculty Chair at Settlement Music School. Her daily recording of Syrinx on her blog, a tribute to Claude Debussy on his 150th anniversary, garnered an international following.
