The Little Red StoreWauwatosa Historical Society 7720 Harwood Ave., Wauwatosa

May 30 - October 17Saturday, 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.Sunday, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.

The lively Marquette University campus and

diverse residential streets now make up the heart of this neighborhood.

You can’t miss signs that this was the historic

home of Milwaukee’s elite, but today you’re

more likely to run into college students than beer barons on Wisconsin Avenue.

AVENUES WEST & MARQUETTE

A

This hip, eclectic neighborhood is

popular with families and young professionals

alike. Home to one of the city’s most popular bar districts, it’s also a

hotbed of local art and creativity. Stroll past

stores stocked with the work of local artisans and historic buildings

decorated with murals.

BAY VIEW

B

Located on a bluff overlooking the Milwaukee River,

Brewers Hill boomed at the turn of the 20th century as a residential

area for the laborers who worked in the foundries,

tanneries, mills, and breweries that lined

the river. You’ll still find a brewery on the river here, plus great dining

on top of the hill.

BREWERS HILL

C

In the historic economic and social heart of Milwaukee’s

African-American community, annual

festivals celebrate the strong roots of jazz and the arts in the

neighborhood, and the main thoroughfare,

Dr. MLK Jr. Drive, is lined with several African American-owned

businesses.

BRONZEVILLE

D

This trendy neighborhood is a melting pot of

UW-Milwaukee students, young professionals,

and longtime residents. Explore nightlife hubs like Brady Street, the historic

home of Milwaukee’s Italian population, and North Avenue – these

streets are packed with restaurants, indie movie

theaters, jazz clubs, and more.

EAST SIDE

F

Set between the Milwaukee River and

the shore of Lake Michigan, this downtown neighborhood is home

to some of the city’s most popular attractions, plus lakefront fun! From beaches to museums, it’s easy to spend the

day exploring with the family, with plenty of

restaurants to enjoy in the evening.

EAST TOWN

G

It was water that first brought people to

the land that would become Milwaukee.

Water technology and research takes center

stage here at the new UW-Milwaukee School of Freshwater

Sciences, but you’ll also find popular bars and

restaurants around the active harbor.

HARBOR DISTRICT

H

Trendy shops and dining abound in this revitalized

warehouse district. Industrial spaces are

now home to galleries, restaurants, boutique

shops, and stylish national retailers. Along

the lakefront is Henry Maier Festival Park,

home of Summerfest, where the city comes

alive every summer for festival after festival.

HISTORICTHIRD WARD

I

Thanks to dedicated locals, this once-

blighted industrial area has been revitalized with green spaces,

sustainable buildings, and attractions. The Menomonee River

Valley is now home to can’t-miss attractions

like Potawatomi Hotel & Casino, Miller Park,

and the Harley- Davidson Museum.

MENOMONEE RIVER VALLEY

J

This diverse, offbeat neighborhood has a

DIY sensibility that runs deep. You’ll find a little bit of everything here,

from funky music venues to intimate restaurants, brewpubs to tiki bars.

Riverwest is an eclectic neighborhood with a

strong communal spirit, home to a community-run bar, a community

radio station, and a thriving co-op.

RIVERWEST

K

West of the Milwaukee River, you’ll find the Wisconsin Center

(Milwaukee’s convention center) as well as the

city’s premier sports and entertainment district.

Nearby is Old World Third Street, a major focal point

for nightlife downtown and the historic heart

of Milwaukee’s German community.

WESTOWN

M

This diverse neighborhood is a

gateway to Milwaukee’s predominantly

Hispanic south side. You’ll feel the energy of the community on

Cesar Chavez Drive and National Avenue, two main streets in the neighborhood

lined with local restaurants, bakeries,

and businesses.

CLARKE SQUARE

E

The longtime hub of Milwaukee’s gay

community, this neighborhood is now also an epicenter of

foodie activity with an industrial edge. You’ll find some of the city’s best LGBTQ bars and nightclubs alongside

award-winning restaurants and

locally-made artisan food products.
