ABOUT THE MILTON LITERARY FESTIVAL’S WRITING CONTEST

Milton Literary Festival Scholarships presented by Honoree Karen White

We could not do this without support from our sponsors: We encourage you to visit them online (click their logos), or stop in to say thank you for being a supporter of our community. Remember, supporting local matters.

The purpose of the Milton Literary Festival’s Young Authors Creative Writing Contest is to foster a love of creative writing, an awareness of oneself within the world, and ownership of talents and contributions, while building an inclusive community. 2018 is the inaugural year for this contest.

The contest is a new addition of the Milton Literary Festival. Our mission is to unite and celebrate a diverse community who share in the love of the written and spoken word, so that all generations are inspired, educated, entertained, and transformed by the magic of stories.

Our tagline is: Find Your Story

Karen White is a beloved author, living in Milton.

To thank her for her continued support of the Milton Literary Festival, it was suggested by Annell Gerson of Bookmiser, the festival’s bookseller of record for the third consecutive year, that we find a way to honor Karen. Thus, the concept for the scholarship and writing contest was born.

The Executive Planning Committee was thrilled when Karen agreed to be available to present the awards.

GENERAL RULES

student. Incomplete form entries will be eliminated.

2) The fictional, original, solo student work must be submitted adhering to the following requirements:

a. Typed, single sided, Times New Roman, size 12 font, double spaced

b. Each page must have a header/footer with the following:

i. (Header) Student Name, grade, school (Footer) page # in center location

3) Entry must be submitted to [email protected] no later than 11:59 PM on Friday, October 12th.

4) Only one (1) entry per student.

PROMPTS

You must incorporate one of the two prompts below in your creative fiction story:

1) Write a story about a character who has experienced misfortune, oppression, suffering, or pain, but in spite

of all this trouble remained resilient. How did the character and/or event affect the other characters? Was

the character changed by the event? This should be in story form.

Example: “When Mr. Tiddlywinks was falsely imprisoned, he thought of two things, escape and revenge.”

2) Write a story from the point of view of someone who cannot read, perhaps someone outside the borders of

your own home town. Consider what life would be like without the ability to read. What challenges and

obstacles might your character face?

Example: It was the first day on of ninth grade and already Allison was confronting her biggest challenge- reading a

poem out loud. The poem wasn’t the issue, but the reading was. Allison didn’t know how.
