Housing specialized studios, galleries, and a lecture hall, Breidenstine Hall is the center of inspiration, creativity, innovation and passion at Millersville University. Breidenstine Hall is named for Aaron G. Breidenstine (19551966), Dean of Instruction. It also houses the Swift Gallery named for Margaret Swift (1927 1958), a professor of art education, and the Sykes Gallery, named for Ronald E. Sykes (19561998), a professor of art and chairman of the department. Breidenstine Hall Building Access & Usage Policy Building Access & Usage Policy Art History View Art History Lecture Hall The slide library contains approximatley 75,000 slides dealing with most areas of art history pertianing to the Western and Near Eastern World. The collection is particularly strong in the following areas: Medieval manuscript illumination, Italian Renaissance painting, 17th Century Dutch painting, 15th Century Flemish painting. Ceramics View Ceramics Studio The ceramics studio includes: 20 potters wheels 1 slab roller 1 extruder 1 hydraulic extruder 2 clay mixers 1 spray booth 1 electric test kiln 6 electric kilns 2 gas car kilns 1 gas soda kiln A separate clay mixing and glazing room, a separate glaze mixing room, a separate electric kiln room, a separate gas kiln room, a separate damp room, and a small plaster working area/advanced studio. Drawing The drawing studio has skylights with northern light exposure. Along with two modeling stands the room is equipped with 28 drawing benches and 12 adjustable easels. The storage cabinets and closets house a range of still life materials, individual mirrors (for in class self portraiture), and an anatomy skeleton. Fine Arts Metals The studio facilities are equipped with a recently renovated ventilation system and are excellent for the production of smallscale sculpture and art jewelry. The studio includes all of the major equipment necessary for fabricating, casting, raising, enameling, etching, and finishing processes. There are 20 individual jewelers’ benches. PaintingView Paint Studio

The 1700 square foot painting studio is equipped with 30sturdy metal easels, 6 wooden easels, and 26 taborets thatare move to accommodate the changing needs of classprojects. The room has skylights with northern lightexposure, 6 light stands with reflectors, and 2 clip lightreflectors. An adjacent room offers storage for painting andrelated supplies, and also has working stations forpreparation of art material, matting, framing, 2 Logan matcutters, and a small spray booth. There is a metal storagecabinet for solvents, and a 55 gallon drum with fire safetylid for used rag storage. Included in the studio are: variousprops for still life, 4.5’ x 8’ model stand, vertical andhorizontal storage racks.

PhotographyView Photography Studio

The photography facility houses both digital and darkroomproduction equipment. The digital space is equipped with20 Macintosh computers and Photoshop software. Thedarkroom is equipped with 22 enlargers that print from35mm through 4 x 5 inch negatives. Color prints areprocessed in a 20inch Kreonite color print processor. Thephotography facility houses a small darkroom for nonsilverand other alternative processes. Other equipment includesdigital SLR cameras, medium and large format filmcameras, film dryers, archival film & print washers, lighttables, drymounting equipment, and a mat cutter. Thephotography studio has a separate classroom for lectures,multimedia presentations and critiques. This largeclassroom doubles as a studio space; it is equipped withstudio lighting and professional backdrops.

PrintmakingView Printmaking Studio

The printmaking studio is outfitted to instruct the four majorfine art printmaking processes of relief, intaglio, lithographyand silkscreen. The facility has seven presses: twolithography presses including a Takach (bed size 40”x 72”)and a Griffin (bed size 32”x 88”), two Brand etchingpresses (bed sizes 30”x 50” and 20”x 40”), two silkscreenpresses (bed size 44’x 64”and 36”x48”), and a Vandercookproofing press. In the darkroom there is a selfcontainedAmergraph screen exposure unit and a scoop coating areawith drying cabinets. There is a separate ventilated roomfor etching that includes a plumbed eye station andshower. Another room houses a power washer and backlitsprayout sink is used for screenprinting and a ventilatedspray booth. The facility has a large library of lithographiclimestones the largest of which is 30”x 40”.

SculptureView Sculpture Studio

The sculpture studio encompass a complete bronzecasting foundry capable of pouring in excess of 300 lbs. ofmolten metal. The foundry area has an overhead hoist andis set up to utilize ceramic shell casting. The facility isequipped with a burnout kiln, a shell room, a blast cabinet,pneumatic grinders & finishers, and a floor mountedpolisher. The welding equipment includes: gas welders,TIG and MIG welders. Outside of the studio is an iron forge.For cold forming of metal there is a box and pan break, 4’shear, 4’ power slip roll, and a small 30” slip roll. We havethe usual complement of wood working power tools: tableand band saws, drill press, floor disc sander, wood turninglathe.

ThreeDimensional DesignThe threedimensional design studio has two band saws,two portable dust collectors, a drill press, and a variety ofhand tools. In addition, three large tables easily providedample workspace for the students enrolled in each class.

TwoDimensional DesignThe classroom has 26 drafting tables with tilting tabletops,adjustable cushioned chairs, a mounted digital projector,and plenty of clean, unobstructed wall space to easilyaccommodate critiques.
