Those of you who have been around for a while know that parking can be very tight at Miller. In the winter when we have piles of snow it's difficult to find enough spaces for the whole staff. Dismissal can be a nightmare with buses unable to find a path through the cars. And forget about daytime events such as concerts. If you've been at school this week you've seen the trucks digging and leveling in preparation for hot topping in front of the school toward the road. The idea is that this will allow two rows of cars to park back to back. Staff who stay all day will take the row closest to the road and others can be closer to the school. This is a project I've been working on for years. It's been in and out of the budget so many times I can't even count any more. Thanks to our Business Manager, Karla Miller, and our Facilities Director, George Bridges, for making it happen this year. FROM THE PRINCIPALʼS DESK

This has been one of my favorite weeks of school ever! No, not because we had Pre-K though that was very exciting. It's because we're finally expanding our parking lot.

Those of you who have been around for a while know that parking can be very tight at Miller. In the winter when we have piles of snow it's difficult to find enough spaces for the whole staff. Dismissal can be a nightmare with buses unable to find a path through the cars. And forget about daytime events such as concerts.

From the Food Service Department

Please fill out the free and reduced breakfast / lunch application and return it to your child’s school as soon as possible. Parents are responsible for any negative balances. If you receive food stamps or TANF, please provide the 8 digit number that can be found on your letter from DHHS. It should end with the letter A. Please do not use the long number found on your EBT card. If you cannot find your 8 digit number please call DHHS to obtain it. Only one application is needed per household. Make sure that you follow the instructions that are printed on the application carefully. We no longer receive letters from DHHS letting us know who should receive free lunch. The website that lists children who are on the Direct Certification list is down. Therefore, we need those completed applications to determine who should be receiving free breakfast and lunch. If you have any questions or need assistance, call the Food Service Director at 785-2277 ext. 241. A new application must be filled out each year.

Milk is provided with breakfast and lunch. Extra milk or milk purchased to go with a cold lunch is .50, even to students who receive free or reduced meals.

There are more changes to the school food service program this year, mostly pertaining to the breakfast program and a-la-carte items (100% whole grain, lower sodium, fewer calories, less saturated fat, and more fresh fruit). A-la-carte items can be purchased at the middle school and at the high school.

Thanks,

Storm Hendrickson

Food Service Director, MSAD 40

We had a very successful and well attended meeting Tuesday night. If you missed it, don't worry, we have one big meeting a month, but the smaller committees meet as well. Our biggest accomplishment of the meeting was setting the year’s goals and choosing committee leaders. Information on time and place for those meetings will be posted here next week as well as on our Facebook page.

Our current fundraisers:

BOXTOPS: 10¢ at a time we can raise thousands of dollars. Check your folder for our first contest! And welcome our new BoxTop coordinator: Carrie Chavanne!

JUICE POUCHES: these are collected by our Volunteer, Paige Bossow. Her job is to stuff as many as possible into a box and send them in. Please help make her job easier by ONLY sending juice pouches.

News from the RSU 40 District Health Office

Welcome Back! We hope that everyone has had a wonderful summer. It is hard to believe that we are already back in school. Each week, the RSU 40 Health Office will provide helpful tips on staying active, healthy living/eating and staying safe. With the new school year upon us, we’d like to set parameters for when a child should be sent to school when they are not feeling well. Some parents have asked for guidelines for making this decision, so we thought it wise to let you know of conditions when it would be best for a child to not attend school.

Please keep your child home if she/he exhibits one or more of the following symptoms:

*Fever: A temperature of 100.6 degrees F or higher (taken orally). A child should be “fever free” for 24 hours without the use of Tylenol or Motrin.*Diarrhea: Watery, foul smelling, runny and/or bloody stools.*Vomiting: One or more times in the last 24-hour period. *Sore throat: With vomiting, earache or irritability accompanied by a fever*Nasal Discharge: Runny, yellowish-greenish mucous accompanied by fever, vomiting, or diarrhea.*”Pinkeye”: Greenish, yellowish drainage and inflammation of the conjunctiva (white) of the eye.*Rash: An unexplained rash with fever or behavioral change. A child can return to school if a physician has determined the illness is not communicable and a fever is gone.*Strep throat/Impetigo and other bacterial infections requiring antibiotics: – Discuss with your physician when it is appropriate to return to school.

Children with the above symptoms cannot comfortably participate in program activities and they unnecessarily expose others to their illnesses. They should stay home for at least 24 hours before returning to school. If you believe your child is too sick to go out to recess, then she/he is probably too sick to attend school.

Please encourage your child to wash hands before eating, after using the bathroom, and after sneezing or blowing her/his nose.

By using these few guidelines we can all stay a little healthier. If you have any questions, concerns or ideas for a healthier school year, please give the RSU 40 District Health Office a call.
