Across the Pastor’s Desk
Most of you are aware by now that I announced this past Sunday during worship that I have decided
to retire at the session of the North Georgia Annual Conference after 40 years under appointment. Part of my
prayerful discernment had to do with reviewing the statistical bottom lines from 2013.
There are many good things that happened in 2013. We received 40 new members, 10 of which
were by profession of faith, and with the additional 2 that were restored, 12 of the 40 were not members any
where when they joined here. Our music program has taken on new life with our children and youth. We
opened the Milledgeville Christian Counseling Center and have increased our hands on missions work. We
are making a difference in our community.
However, statistically 2013 was not a good year. We spent $28,488.72 more than we received. I will
address this more in my letter to our contributors. Our total professing membership dropped from 1,086 to
1,062. Worship attendance dropped from 403 to 378. These three bottom lines had never occurred in my
ministry previously. I can rationalize all I want, but the buck stops with me.
I decided to retire in part because the church does not need any internal squabbles right now. We
need to focus on the future and making disciples.
Hopefully over the next five months I can be God’s prophetic voice. What you can be is faithful to
Christ.
The one thought I want to leave you with today is that it makes a difference whether you come to
church or not and whether or not you support the church financially. There are consequences to our actions
and inactions. Your support of the church should not be based on who the preacher is or isn’t, but solely on
your commitment to Jesus Christ. May we be as faithful to God as He is to us.
I am clear, the Kingdom of God is not about me and it is not about you either. The Kingdom of God
is about eternal, not temporal. I have always said we pastors are temporary help, but our actions have eternal
consequences.
May God help us to finish the race before us.
In Christ,
Mike Cavin

I hope everyone had a fantastic Martin Luther King Jr. day. In light of this celebration of the life and witness
of MLK Jr, I find the following quotes particularly relevant considering our 30 Hour Famine efforts.
"It really boils down to this: that all life is interrelated. We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutual-
ity, tied into a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one destiny, affects all indirectly.” and "Every man
must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.”
My hope is that all of you choose to walk in the light of creative altruism as we continue to fight hunger in the
name of Christ.
This Sunday (Jan. 26) we will have regular youth activities:
5:30-6pm, Snack Supper
6-7pm, Choir
7-8pm, UMYF
Next Week is our annual Super Bowl party. Details TBA

come and join us on Sunday and Wednesday nights. Choir and Kid-
sTime meets on Sunday from 4:00-5:30pm, 4 year olds- 2nd grades
will have choir in the choir room and 3rd-5th grades will have
KidsTime. On Wednesday the two ages will reverse activities. The
4 year olds- 2nd grades will have KidsTime starting at 5:45pm and
the 3rd-5th grade will have choir starting at 6:05pm. 4 year olds- 2nd
graders will eat their dinner in the KidsTime room. Please remem-
ber to make dinner reservation for your child through the church
