Recently I overheard a couple of people debating the pro’s and con’s of Donald Trump, the new President of the United States. I looked up the word democracy on Wikipedia and they quote political scientist Larry Diamond who states that “democracy consists of four key elements: (a) A political system for choosing and replacing the government through free and fair elections: (b) The active participation of the people, as citizens, in politics and civic life; (c) Protection of the human rights of all citizens, and (d) A rule of law, in which the laws and procedures apply equally to all citizens.” It got me thinking according to the above definition, just how undemocratic some parts of our world are. It also got me thinking that the Donald Trump, Brexit and local body elections are showing that the ‘people’ have had enough of the status quo and they want a change. Prime Minister John Key out and Bill English in, potentially the superannuation age will be 67 and not 65 in 20 years time. Now for what is happening and maybe changing on the farm. The payout is better this season up from $4.30 to $6.40. Hooray for that! However, hold all tickets. On the 8th March, two auctions ago the Global Dairy Trade result was down 6.3%and two weeks later it’s up 1.7%. It’s up and down like a yoyo. It does make you wonder if we have any control over the payout price with world events affecting our dairy auction prices up or down, auction after auction. It leads me to the age old saying, “we can only control what we do on farm”. We can’t control the uncontrollable, namely the weather and the world economy. To help you control some on farm costs, Agmax has some new offerings for you. We have added Nitrosol Seaweed Flakes, Nitrosol Gibberellic Acid, and Nitrosol Micro-Lime to our Nitrosol product range. This may be of interest to you Agmax stalwarts! Nitrosol Seaweed is full of the minerals that get washed into the sea and get concentrated by seaweed. Most traditional fertilizers lack many of the minerals that are required in minute quantities by plants, hence you only need 1kg/ha of seaweed flakes in water. Great for feeding and activating soil bacteria. What’s your pasture’s requirement??? Lime is necessary on most New Zealand farms and traditionally applied at 1 tonne /acre, (2.5 tonne /ha). With it’s super fine particles, Nitrosol Micro-Lime can be applied at much lower quantities for the same results, only 250kg/ha. This results in a considerable reduction in application cost and mechanical soil damage. What’s your calcium or ph requirement?? Finally, if you need a pasture growth spurt, don’t look past Nitrosol Gibb A90. A 90% strength Gibberellic acid that gives an average 35% more dry matter when used at only 9grams/ha. This naturally derived product is steroids for grass and supplements a good fertiliser programme. Need more dry matter??? More dry matter equals more milk in the vat. More milk in the vat equals more money in your pocket! For answers to these three questions please call Nitrosol on 0800 80 30 60. So those are the offerings of Agmax’s sister company Nitrosol, now have a look on page 2 for the Agmax Autumn specials, namely, Met600, Focus (an organosiliocone wetter), Glyphosate and unbelievable pricing for Noromectin Pour On Worm Drench for the heifers and drying off stock. Here’s to hoping the deluge of rain we had a few weeks ago helps one and all achieve a longer milk season. Love Life. Are you moving next season? Three ways to let us know: 1. Mothballing the Milkline and VatMore people grade on their first pickup of a new season than at any other time. And the biggest cause of start-of-season hygiene problems is poor cleaning at the end of the previous season!Any soil you leave in the machine at season’s end will dry and harden over winter. By the time you start up next season it will have become a hoary, crusty deposit that normal routine cleaning, and perhaps even a bomb, won’t remove. It will, however, collect fresh soil very nicely. So by the time you start sending new-season milk away, it will have about a zillion bugs in it. 1. Do a powerful bomb wash after your last milking.2. Allow the machine to dry, then open/strip all components and inspect

thoroughly.3. Manually clean any parts which are not perfectly clean, and replace any

knackered rubberware.4. Re-assemble the machine, rinse well and sanitise with hot or cold acid/

sanitizer.5. Drain plant. Remember to rinse and sanitise the plant before the next use.

Machine CleaningAlkali Sachets and Agmax Chlorine

For your last wash of the season, here’s how to do a bomb type wash using alkali sachets.• Do a big cold rinse using 20 litres of cold water per cluster.• Drain the plant.• Now for the bomb! A bomb wash is simply another term for a super strong

alkali wash. Use 10 litres of hot water per cluster and increase your usual alkali amount by three to five times.Example: If you put through 100 litres of hot water and use 1 x 100g Alkali Sachet – for the ‘clean-up’ wash – add 3 – 5 x 100g Alkali Sachets and 250mls of Agmax Chlorine.

• Recirculate for 6-8 minutes and don’t let the water temperature drop below 60º.

• Rinse with 200 litres of cold water and add 100mls of Agmax Maximum acid sanitiser or 150mls Agmax Works acid sanitiser, in the last 100 litres of water.

• Drain the plant. Remember to rinse and sanitise the plant before the next use.

Wait until the plant has time to dry and then inspect the milkline.

• Check to see if there are any patches on the upper surfaces (ceiling), if there are:

• Use a torpedo brush dipped in vat cleaner to brush the milkline.• Then brush a second time with a filter sock over the brush. If it comes out

covered in yellowy/orange gunk, you’ll need to repeat the process as what you can see is protein and must be removed before shutting down the plant.

Vat CleaningFor the last vat wash of the season we recommend you use Agmax Vat Cleaner which was purpose designed for this job.• Apply vat cleaner to the walls, paddle, around the door and lastly the entire

floor.• Leave for 10 – 15 minutes.• Rinse off with plenty of plain cold water and finish with an acid rinse.

Wait until the vat has time to dry and then inspect it.• Check the surfaces for rainbows or dull patches.

Super Tip: put a cup full of vat cleaner in your vat wash and watch it foam its head off. This creates a fantastic amount of contact time and because there is so much contact time it cleans superbly. Try this in your plant as well; you simply have to watch out for the high foaming plants which cut off the sanitary trap.

CAUTION I STRONGLY ADVISE YOU TO WEAR ALL YOUR PROTECTIVE CLOTHING

“Show me the data”, said Thomas as we spoke to him about the benefits of biological or regenerative agriculture over current farming practices. Biological agriculture is a system where natural processes are encouraged, the use of chemical inputs reduced while holding production, and at a lower cost. Ancillary benefits are reduced animal health bills, less leaching improving environmental impact and increasing soil carbon, which ultimately saves the planet. It exemplifies sustainability improving people, planet and profit.

So we pulled out the data we had:

1. Enriched soil life increased crop yields, improved P mineralisation and reduced P and N leaching loss (Bender & van der Heijden, 2015).

2. Biological farming systems use significantly less agro-chemicals, are more energy efficient, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve soil qualities without reducing output and financial benefits, resulting in a more ecologically, economically and socially more robust model compared to the conventional farming approach (Association of Biological Farmers)

3. Mark Shaw, a North Island dairy farmer said biological farming had reduced traditional high rates of nitrate and phosphorous, reported happier animals and felt he was leaving the land in better hands for the future (Wallwork, 2011).

4. A Nitrosol dairy farmer customer was achieving 528kg MS/cow growing pasture biologically.

“Mmmnn” grunted Thomas, doubt furrowing his brow, “This is all good data but my farms are different, one is peat and the other marine clay, these are different and I am not sure the data is relevant to my farms”.

So we had to revert to primary data collection for Thomas’ two farms. Out came the spade, refractometer, soil augur, magnifying glass and associated equipment to do a Visual Soil Assessment and take a baseline soil microbe analysis. We quickly established the soils were in poor health, tight, minimal pores and lack of earthworms an indicator of low microbe activity. Microbe analysis confirmed this with low levels of active microbes and an imbalance between bacteria and fungi.

We discussed the findings and agreed on a course of action applying Nitrosol to two paddocks on both farms. The hypothesis being Nitrosol would activate the microbes and improve the balance. Further tests were planned for three months after the application and the results shown alongside

• The bacteria had been activated on both farms from a pretty much zero activity state (top 4 bars)

• Fungi were starting to exhibit activity from a zero base (middle 4 bars)

• The clay soil was moving from bacterial dominate to better balance while the peat was losing its fungal dominance to a better pasture balance

The data supported the hypothesis and biological activity was starting.

“Happy to do both your farms now that you have seen the proof Thomas ?”

“Ah this biological takes time like making good cheese. Let’s continue with the tests and gather more data for three years before we make a decision!”

More tests, more delays, saving our soils sure takes time to convince our Thomas’s despite all the data.

POWER TO THE GROUNDSaving our soil is a slow process

HERD OVERTHE FENCELINE

THE LAST LAUGH“Several days ago as I left Bunnings store in Te Aroha, walked out to my ute and was reaching into my pocket for my car keys... I suddenly got that sick feeling when I didn’t find them there. I desperately gave myself a personal pat down, jeans pockets, shirt pocket, nothing there.I went back into Bunnings and did a quick search on the seat where I had been sitting, no keys. I asked everybody if they had seen my keys... nope. Then it hit me, I must have left them in the ute. Frantically, I headed for the car park. My wife, Faye has scolded me a thousand times for leaving my keys in the ignition. My theory is the ignition is the best place not to lose them. Her theory is that the car will be stolen if I do that. As I burst through the doors of Bunnings and out into the parking lot, I came to a terrifying conclusion. Her theory was right. The car park was empty, no ute in sight – I immediately called the police. I gave them my location, confessed that I had left my keys in the ute and that it had been stolen.

Then I made the most difficult call of all. “Honey,” I stammered. I always call her honey in times like these. “I left my keys in the ute and it has been stolen. “ There was a deadly silence. I thought the call had been dropped, but then I heard Faye’s voice. “BOB,” she barked, “I dropped you off at Bunnings on my way to the supermarket!” Now it was my time to be silent. Embarrassed, I said, “Well, could you come and pick me up?” Faye replied, “I will, as soon as I convince these coppers I have not stolen your ????? ute!!”
