LEADING SUPPLIEROF SCORING SYSTEMS SINCE 1956.Air Target has been a leading supplier of scoringsystems since 1956. Our acoustical scoringproducts have been delivered to customersInternationally in more than 30 countries.Acoustical scoring is a method to measure themiss distance between a supersonic projectileor missile and a target. The range of productsinclude: the Mini Marque and Marque scoringstations, Miss Distance Indicators (MDI), uplinkcommand units, sleeve targets, and winches.

Train More EfficientlyAnd Save Money

New scoring stations and MDIs make firingtraining more flexible and more realistic whichis important in modern firing training. By makinguse of this technology you can save money byreducing ammunition consumption and trainingtime whilst allowing gunners and the weaponsystem operators get more efficient training.

Calculating ProjectileMiss Distance

The shock wave generated by a passingsupersonic projectile or missile is detected byan array of pressure sensitive sensors installed

on or close to the target. The amplitude and thetime differences between the different sensorsare used to calculate the shortest distancebetween the target and the projectile (the missdistance), and in what angular position theprojectile passed. The scoring data arepresented in real time on a colour graphiccomputer display. Data transmission betweensensors and display is via a radio link.

Gunnery Trainingwith Acoustical

ScoringScoring gives the gunner and the weaponsystem operator real time information in thevirtual "scoring board". This information gives a

picture of each round "hitting" the "scoringboard". The angular position of the score as wellas a score too far off can immediately guide thegunner to improve his direction of fire. Theimproved results can be verified as they appearon the "scoring board".

Acoustical ScoringFiring Situations

Acoustical scoring is useful for calibers from 5.56to 5" and above and missiles (rounds need to besupersonic in the target area). Acoustical scoringcan be used for all firing situations i.e. AIR to AIR,AIR to GROUND, GROUND to AIR, GROUNDto GROUND, and the corresponding navalapplications.

LOMAH SystemThe “LOMAH” system is our latest developedsystem and has been delivered in large numbersto many customers since 2006.

LOMAH is a calibration free acoustic scoringsystem suitable for scoring of all supersoniccaliber sizes.Typical areas of application:- Firing range and combat soldier training SASS-4/9- Tank Target Scoring System TTSS-4/9- All type of static and moving targets, includingpop-up targets- Aircraft firing against ground targets ATGThe use of a scoring system will increase thethroughput and make the validation of thegunners efficient and very cost effective. The firing result is presented on a Visual DisplayUnit (VDU-1) placed close to the gunner. Severaltarget figures are available, such as half and fullsize soldier figures, or a ten ring standard target.Up to 10 ea. lanes each containing several SASSunits can be connected to a Range OfficePresentation Unit (ROPU) for presentation ofthe firing result. The result can be printed aswell.

Mini Marque andMarque Scoring

StationsMini Marque and Marque scoring stations areused for the collection, calculation andpresentation of real time firing results from upto six targets simultaneously.

The new scoring stations Marque and MiniMarque can receive scoring data from up to sixtargets (MDIs) simultaneously. The software isbased on Windows NT including a SQL-7 database. Features include: Up to 40 m scoring range;Up to 6000 rounds/minute.

Miss DistanceIndicators (MDIs)

Zone, 4- and 12-sector models as well as vectormodels are available for all type of targets andUAVs.

The universal 12 sector MDI gives the possibilityto fire at a target (MDI) coming from anydirection. The target towing operator/UAVoperator can offer any target courses during thesame mission.

Uplink CommandUnit

This is used to remotely change the MDIfrequency and sensitivity. Other equipmentincludes test equipment to test the complete

scoring system, sleeve targets, which are softtargets for various applications (radar, laser), andinboard target towing winches.

Customisation ofAcoustical Scoring

SystemsCustomisation of our products to thecustomer's requirements is one of ourspecialities.

After testing MacWet gloves on exercise in the Falkland Islands, Lieutenant Corporal Michael McMurtry said that:

“With weather conditions in the field similar to those of the Brecon Beacons, the MacWets really had their work cut out. From the offset of the trial, I thought these gloves were superb. They are so lightweight and thin that they make tasks such as changing mags and administrating yourself in the field simple. Being so fine, however, can often pose the danger of damage to the material under pressure.

But the MacWets do not seem vulnerable to rips and tears, and I found them to be very durable and hardwearing on unforgiving rock and shingle. Being thin means that even if soaked they dry within minutes when placed on a radiator back in camp or even when left on the user’s hands on a windy day. Most gloves currently on the market are bulky and uncomfortable, causing a negative impact on your movement. However, the way MacWets’ Aquatec® fabric responds to both moisture and climate change means users benefit from maximum grip and comfort at the same time.

All in all, the MacWets are an awesome piece of kit for soldiers who mean business. They come highly recommended.”

UNPARALLELEDGRIP IN ALL

CONDITIONS

“All grip, no slip” - MacWet gloves more than live up to their billing, the tactical range is already used by law enforcers and armed forces around the world. Offering a comfortable, breathable feel, the gloves ensure maximum grip consistently. With an extremely high level of sensitivity, they allow for fine adjustment of equipment in the field which can save valuable seconds.

MacWet’s unique Aquatec® fabric responds to both moisture and climate change, ensuring maximum grip, sensitivity, feel and comfort at all times. In all weather conditions ranging from intense heat to pouring rain, they are designed to perform at the highest standard. Their unique technology draws moisture away from the hand to the outside of the glove in order to increase grip even further.

for the receive signals and selectively rejectsthe frequency range between 13.75 GHz and14.5 GHz, isolation values of 85 dB in thetransmit frequency range can be guaranteed(typical: >95 dB).

The material used is, of course, the sameseawater proof chromated aluminium alloyas used for our rotary joints. Thecomponents are marked by means of ab-rasion-proof laser engraving. In order to avoidelectro-chemical corrosion, all hardwareparts and tuning elements are completelymade of stainless steel or are properlygalvanized to ensure the maximum servicelife of the components.

Unnecessary soldering and contact spotswhich are exposed to the transmit signals arecompletely avoided; this way loss is reducedand the power rating consequentlyenhanced. It goes without saying that thisdesign is also superior in terms of lowestpossible intermodulation.

Typically, there is an excellent broadbandVSWR of typically 1.05 (1.10 guaranteed withina transmit frequency range between 13.75GHz and 14.5 GHz) at the axial waveguideport, whereas the insertion loss towards theround waveguide door is only a fewhundredths of a dB (guaranteed value: 0.10dB).

In the standard version, the band-stop filterat the re- ceive path is adjusted to a stopband of 13.75 GHz to 14.5 GHz which resultsin a VSWR value at the orthogonalwaveguide port of below 1.20 in a rangebetween 12.25 GHz and 12.75 GHz as well asbelow 1.25 between 10.75 GHz and 12.25 GHz.The attenuation of the receive signals isbelow 0.25 dB and typically around 0.2 dB.Specific tunings of the band-stop filter aswell as customer-specific circular waveguideflanges are possible on request.

In the past few months, the focus of oursatellite communication portfolio was ondifferent C band and Ku band rotary joints.Various models both for C band and Ku bandwere presented which were specificallytailored to this purpose both in terms oftechnical features and costs.

C band and Ku band Rotary JointsSince SPINNER supplies both rectangular aswell as circular waveguide rotary joints forthe Ku band, it was only consequent to offerthe waveguide components which areusually located in between as well. The BN960802 presented in this issue is an OrthoMode Transducer (OMT) for the Ku bandwhich is equipped with a band-stop filter fortransmit frequencies at the receiver side.

polarization duplexers which separate orcombine transmit and receive signals. Thecommon circular waveguide port with astandard diameter of 19.05 mm (= 0.75") isused as antenna port which carries bothtransmit and receive signals by means of twoorthogonal H11 modes.

The transmit signal is fed to the axialR120/WR75 rectangular waveguide port andtransformed into the appropriately polarizedH11 mode inside the OMT with exceptionallylow reflection and loss. The orthogonalwaveguide port provides the receive signalsand is arranged perpendicularly to this.

The monolithic design of the OMT producedon high-precision CNC machining centers isthe basic requirement for lowest possiblemechanical tolerances resulting in excellentelectrical parameters. The isolation betweenthe rectangular waveguide ports achievableby polarization discrimination, for example,is a quality feature which is essentially theresult of production accuracy. Values of atleast 40 dB are ensured over the entire rangeof 10.75 GHz to 14.50 GHz (measured withoutband-stop filter); typical values in seriesproduction are between 50 and 60 dB.

In interaction with the band-stop filter, whichis located at the orthogonal waveguide port

called for a top quality facility, flexibleenough to cope with the numerousvariations in equipment and layout beingapplied to the standard engine design. Whenplanning the connections, previous goodworking experience of using Stäubli monoconnectors made it natural to involve Stäubliin this multi coupling application too.

Stäubli analysed the connectionrequirements and recommended usingtailored sets of multi-coupling plates withthe socket side located on the engine testcradles and the plug side on the test beds.Similar solutions had been produced byStäubli for use in the motorsport sector aswell as being extensively used in theautomotive market for example by Renaultat their Cleon factory in France.

Assembling an array of quick releaseconnectors onto a single multi-couplingplate provides quick and simultaneousconnection of all services e.g. coolant, oil, fuel, pressure transducers, electrics and data.It is the most significant single improvementin productivity that can be applied to enginetest beds.

Stäubli MCS multi-couplings are configured

Stäubli multi-couplings manufacture thesecure, automatic, leak free connectionsoperating at the heart of Perkins impressiveengine testing facilities at their Peterboroughfactory.

For well over 75 years, Perkins has led thefield in the design and manufacture of high-performance diesel engines. A programme ofcontinuous development, allows them tooffer one of the most advanced andcomprehensive ranges. Acquired byCaterpillar in 1998, together they are theworld’s largest diesel engine manufacturer, supplying major equipment manufacturers inthe construction, power generation, materials handling, agricultural and generalindustrial markets.

Perkins pride themselves on hot testing everyengine they produce (they also cold testeach engine too!). This requires a bank of testcells where the engine can be connected tocoolant, fuel, oil, electrics and an exhaustline which allows each engine to be run upto the designed speed. Perkins operated noless than 68 engine test beds, each onemanually operated, calling for laborious andslow connections to be made to eachengine. Health and safety of operatives and

Stäubli multi couplingsimprove productivity, safetyand the environment inPerkins diesel engine test cells

environmental aspects were also a concernin the cells with the risk of hot oil escapingand the chance of a fire in the confinedspace of the test bed – a new safer andautomated solution was required.

In 2001, Perkins embarked on a project toreplace their existing engine test facilitieswith new state-of-the-art automatedsystems that provided a clean workingenvironment, eliminated any chance ofenvironmental harm and would be capableof accommodating the growing productionvolumes on the 4 litre and 6 litre engine lines,in total the project was a £25 millioninvestment.

Essential to the new system was automatingthe connections required by each engine, removing any chance of poor or incorrectconnections and eliminating any leaks. Thenew cells also must be able to test andmonitor the electrical systems increasinglybeing used on diesel engines and providedata sets for each engine that could beaccessed, analysed and supplied to thecustomer when required.

This project was the largest upgradeimplemented at the Peterborough plant and

improved out of all recognition.

Some of the engine pallets have now beenoperating through the test cells for severalyears, testing close on 1 million engines,Stӓubli’s connectors have operatedfaultlessly.

The test facility has performed so well thata similar system on the 6 litre engine line hasbeen installed. Six test cells and 20 testpallets have each been equipped with Stäublimulti coupling plates, capable of testing theincreasing production volumes of engines.

for each specific application. ExperiencedStäubli engineers review requirements todetermine the precise specification for theplate. This takes into account the type offluids in use, their pressure and temperatureas well as the electrical connections(amperage, voltage, number of pins etc.)required and the type of valving and sealsneeded and the size envelope available andpositioning on the unit. Their wideexperience in the connection of fluids andgases and the facility to incorporate anddevelop electrical connections with theirsister company, Multi-Contact, places Stäubliin a unique position, able to supply fullfunction multi-coupling solutions.

From this data Stäubli designs andmanufactures a specific multi-coupling platedrawing on products from their wide range. This will include modular quick releasecouplings and electrical connectors, guidingand centring components as well asconnection and locking systems. Extraconnectors can be added to give sparecapacity or to allow for future modifications. In the Perkins application Stäubli SPH seriesconnectors were selected for the fluid lines

and REA series for the electrical connections.

The use of multi-couplings dramaticallyimproves safety as well as productivity. Cleanbreak connectors ensure no loss of fluid oringress of contamination on disconnectionand help maintain a clean and safer workingenvironment. Connection can only be madein one position, eliminating any risk of circuitinversion and mis-connection. Guidance pinson the multi-coupling ensure that the engineis located precisely in the correct position onthe test bed. Inclusion of the electricalconnections on the plate removes any tangleof leads around the engine that can often bea problem.

The 68 manual test beds at Perkins werereplaced with 12 cells on the 4 litre line using52 engine pallets. The productivity of thetest beds improved dramatically. Productionlevels of 125,000 engines/year calls for atesting rate of 37 per hour – a rate easilyachieved by the new facility. Floor to floortimes for each engine through testing arenow of the order of 15 mins compared withhours on the old system and the workingenvironment and safety aspects have been
