MillenniuM Cup 2013 - Souvenir publiCationA Message from Stuart RobinsonChairman - NZ Millennium Cup

Another successful NZ Millennium Cup regatta and Congratulations to the 2013 winner, S/Y Zefiro!

Host city Auckland, New Zealand, put on some brilliant sailing weather for all three days of the regatta this year and with Jim Teeters handi-capping formulae on the mark, the racing was closer than ever, with two of the three races being won within a few meters of the finish line. A magical three days was had by all, both on and off the water. Thanks to the wonderful support of our sponsors and yacht entries, the NZ Millennium Cup has its place as an annual fixture in New Zea-land’s City of Sails. We look forward to doing it all again in 2014.

This souvenir publication is yours to relive those special moments on our sparkling waters and the enjoyable time spent with fellow owners, sponsors, industry members and yachties who have made NZ Millen-nium Cup 2013 a memorable event.

We hope you will enjoy browsing through and look forward to seeing you next year!

Racing began on the 15th with Race One, sponsored by The Superyacht Group. Course one took the yachts up through the Gulf Harbour, round Rakino Island and back towards Auckland. Each fought hard to gain ground, but Zefiro could not be caught and took first place, followed by Janice of Wyoming, then Ohana, Silvertip and Sea Toy, with Janice, Ohana and Silvertip all finishing within minutes of each other.

Day 1 - Dock PartyThe day’s racing was capped by a relaxed dock party on the water alongside the yachts. Dock parties were the perfect way to wind down after a day’s racing and dis-sect all the action on the water. This kind of hosting is what Kiwi’s do best, and capa-tilised on the on their renowned hospitality and the setting of Auckland city.

Day Two and with just one race complete it was still everything to play for. The course was similar to Day One, taking a turn around the Haystack rock instead of Rakino. Sea Toy was first off the mark at 12:04pm, followed by Zefiro, then Janice of Wyoming, Silvertip and then Ohana. Having got under-way, all five yachts unfurled their gennakers to move down and into Gulf Harbour, making for a striking sight on the water. As they approached the Gulf Harbour buoy Silvertip and Janice were making gains on Zefiro. By the Haystack the gap between the yachts had closed further and Silvertip, Sea Toy and Ohana all narrowly crossed paths on the tack in the final stretch past Rangitoto. Once again, though, it was Zefiro who crossed the line first, keeping her firmly at the top of the leaderboard. Following her, Silvertip and Ohana fought it outright out to the finish line. Silvertip was just leading until Ohana caught a puff of wind and moved ahead to take second place. Ohana’s crew whooped as they crossed the line and as Silvertip finished both crews applauded each other. Janice came home in fourth place 12 minutes later, followed by Sea Toy in fifth. Once again a dock party followed the day’s racing.

MillenniuM Cup 2013 - Souvenir publiCationRacing - Day 3Hauraki Gulf - AucklandWith results as they stood, the end of Day Two meant that short of a do not finish on Day Three, the regatta belonged to Zefiro. With first place a sure thing, the fight for the remaining podium positions continued with scoring close together and Ohana on five points, Silvertip six and Janice seven. Day Three saw a slightly shorter race course, sponsored by Yachting Developments, with yachts racing down to Whangaparoa and back. Although Janice lead until the far point, she was overtaken by Zefiro, Silvertip and then Ohana who raced together as a leaders pack to the finish. At the finish line Silvertip just caught Zefiro, in an even closer finish than the day before, beating her by 15 seconds. Ohana followed less than two minutes later. Janice claimed fourth place, followed by Sea Toy and with that the racing was over and the results in.
