“Foundation for the Future: Celebrating Milan Historical Museum’s First 50 Years”

From the Sublime, to the Amusing and Beautiful ~

A retrospective of the Museum’s unusual and diverse collections Come celebrate Milan Historical Museum’s 50th Anniversary all summer long in 2005 as the museum, established in 1955, offers unique exhibits of artifacts images, and manuscripts acquired over fifty years in a seven part anniversary exhibit.

In the Galpin Home, the first floor Exhibits Room features seven exhibits. The “Images of the Sacred ” Exhibit features a sublime statue of Shiva as Natarava – or Lord of the Dance. This stunningly detailed bronze expresses Shiva’s dance encompassing the cycle of Life – Death - Life of the universe. This image of the Nataraj is an extraordinary representation of the rich and diverse cultural heritage of India. Other objects include artifacts from Buddhist and Hindu tradition, a Rosary from Lourdes, France, a charming Chinese Kwan Yin Goddess and a Russian icon of Christ, from the estate of Robert Mowry, the museum’s first board president. The “Children ” Exhibit features Charlie Otis, a bisque German doll dressed in clothing

that little boys wore in the 1870’s. Children visiting the museum are amused to find that little boys once wore dresses. Charlie Otis is just one of the 400 antique dolls in a collection donated by Mildred Smith Coulton of Cleveland, years ago. Mrs. Coulton had seen a biographical article in the newspaper about the famous Charles Otis, one of the founders of Otis Elevator Company. She dressed her doll like a photo of Charles Otis in the article and named him “Charlie”.

The “Curiosities and What’s It’s ” Exhibit is a mystery exhibit designed to work the brains of our museum visitors. There are puzzling things to look at and identify. One of our puzzlers is shown at left ~ one of the easy ones! Please come and visit us this year and ask the guide for the answer “key” if you can’t figure this one out!

This exhibit also includes “Writings & Manuscripts ”, “At Work ”, “Leisure Time ” and “A Night on the Town ”. When you visit us this year you’ll actually get 2 special exhibits!

Milan Historical Museum 1 of 4 Museums Nationwide

Featuring Fenton Art Glass Centennial Exhibit Art Glass collectors and enthusiasts will love the fact that Milan Historical Museum is one of four exclusive museums nationwide participating in the Fenton Art Glass Centennial Celebration with special Fenton Art Glass Exhibits. Our Fenton Art Glass Exhibit is open to the public during our regular open season and by appointment from October through December of 2005. This exhibit features stunning art glass from the

museum’s own permanent world-class Mowry Art Glass Exhibit and four never before seen collections! The beautiful piece at left, from the museum’s own permanent collection, is a Fenton Orange Tree hatpin holder. From private on-loan collections from local Milan, Castalia and Port Clinton families, you will enjoy over 70 pieces like the Fenton Vasa Murrhina (right) and the Spiral Optic Vase (bottom). Several of the on-loan Fenton pieces are woven throughout the museum’s other collections and historic houses so be sure and visit the Doll & Toy House to see the adorable “Kittens” display of cups and saucers.

Three other museums are participating in the Centennial Fenton Celebration, with special exhibits of their own:

Mansion Museum , Wheeling, W.VA. Web: www.oionline.com Rotunda Exhibit , Topeka, KS. Web: www.tscpl.org Museum of American Glass , Millville, NJ. Web: www.wheatonvillage.org.

In 1905, F.L. Fenton sought to develop new and unusual colors and treatments for handmade glass. He started the Fenton Art Glass Company in Martins Ferry, Ohio and later built a factory in Williamstown, West Virginia. Art Glass, as opposed to everyday tableware and glassware, is more decorative in nature. Fenton Art Glass Company specializes in a great variety of art glass including baskets, cranberry glass, crested ware, and the ever popular Hobnail pattern. Visit www.fentonartglass.com or call 1-800-933-6766 for Centennial updates.
