1.0 Executive Summary

1.1 References

MIL-STD-461F, “Requirements for the Control of Electromagnetic Interference

Characteristics of Equipment and Subsystems,” 10 December 2007.

1.2 Requirements

The M&A Technology TUFFnote computer and FSP Group FSP065-RAB AC/DC Adapter were

evaluated with respect to the following MIL-STD-461F requirements.

CE102 - Conducted Emissions, Power Leads, 10 kHz to 10 MHz

RE102 - Radiated Emissions, Electric Fields, 2 MHz to 18 GHz

1.3 Summary of Results.

The equipment complies with the CE102 limit.

Significant RE102 emissions that alone influence where the equipment can be operated are as

follows. The TUFFnote computer with AC/DC adapter exceeds the RE102 limit for small-body

fixed-wing aircraft (< 25 meters nose-to-tail) in the 14.5 to 19 MHz and at three frequencies

between 2.4 and 4.5 MHz under battery operation. With the AC/DC adapter, the same emissions

exceed the RE102 limit for large-body fixed-wing aircraft (> 25 meters nose-to-tail) from about

15.5 to 16.5 MHz. Using either power source, the equipment has significant RE102 emissions

above the helicopter limit in the UHF radio frequency band (225 to 400 MHz).

The equipment adequately meets emission requirements for certification for use on Air Force

large-body fixed-wing Air Force aircraft when connected to aircraft 115 Volt AC power and for

all Air Force fixed-wing aircraft under internal battery operation.

2.0 General

2.1 Item Description

The equipment under test was an M&A Technology TUFFnote computer and FSP Group

FSP065-RAB AC/DC Adapter. The equipment will be used during flight. The equipment is

shown below.

2.2 Modes of Operation

The TUFFnote was turned on with the Windows Desktop displayed. Complete data scans were

taken with the computer powered by the AC/DC adapter (120 Volts, 60 Hz). Additional

measurements were accomplished under battery operation where possibly improved results were

anticipated.

2.3 Facility

The measurements were performed in a 20 foot x 18 foot x 10 foot shielding room. The room is

treated with anechoic material in accordance with MIL-STD-461F requirements. For CE102 and

RE102, test instrumentation was located in a separate shielded control room.

2.4 Test Setups

The general test setup was as shown below.

General Setup

A standard test equipment item used during all testing was a Line Impedance Stabilization

Networks (LISNs) inserted in the power leads per MIL-STD-461F. The network has two

sections, one for the high side of the power and a second for the return side.

The TUFFnote computer and FPS065-RAB AC/DC Adapter and measurement conditions were

set up in accordance with MIL-STD-461F requirements. The instrumentation used is listed

In accordance with MIL-STD-461F, system accuracy measurements are performed prior to

testing to ensure that the measurement system will produce accurate results. Test frequencies

and voltage levels that are injected at the power lead connections to the LISNs are shown below.

The injected level is 6 dB below the MIL-STD-461F limit and is calculated as a peak-to-peak

voltage measured on an oscilloscope.

3.1.2.2 CE102 System Accuracy Scans

The following scans are performed to verify the integrity of the measurement setup prior to

testing. A calibrated signal is applied at the EUT power connection at each LISN at a level that

is 6 dB below the MIL-STD-461 limit. The indicated level on the plot should be 6 dB +/- 3 dB

from the limit line.

Commercial software is used for testing. The program is Dare Development’s RadiMation

package, Version 5.6.9. The antennas factors for the measurement antennas as stored in the

software are shown below.

The cable loss from the antenna to the measurement receiver as stored in the software is shown

below. The loss was measured using a signal source and power meter. A reference level was

first established on the power meter at each frequency. The entire cable was then inserted and

the power level again measured. The difference is the cable loss.

Cable Loss - Semflex Coax

A preamplifier is used between 1 and 18 GHz to improve the sensitivity of the measurement

system. The gain as stored in the software is shown below.
