The system of terraces constructed in the four circular depressions are widely believed to have been an agricultural laboratory for the adaptation of and experimentation with crops belonging to the Inca empire. Local residents consider Moray to be a center of sustenance and fertility to which they show reverence through ceremonies of offerings to the land.

Another hypothesis is that Moray was used as an agricultural calendar and a ceremonial site where knowledge was shared concerning natural signs detected in different parts of the Inca empire. Among these natural signs were bird flight patterns, the flowering of certain types of plants with respect to others, etc. Furthermore, Moray was a place to exchange and obtain different seeds for the upcoming planting season.

The region surrounding Moray is populated by 724 permanent residents in two farming communities – Mullak´as Misminay and Kacllaraccay – where the language spoken is Quechua.The principal industries in the local communities are artisan craftsmanship and agriculture.Many artesanal products are made using corn as well as plants used for dying. One may find it impossible to avoid contemplating the great variety of wild resources available in this ecosystem. Local community members have demonstrated to us many uses for these natural resources;not only are many of these plants edible, but a great number of them are also used for diverse medicinal, utilitarian, and traditional purposes. It´s through the land itself that the local community members tryto transmit to us their knowledge, traditions, and customs that form part of daily life.

Mater Conexo is the branch of Mater Iniciativa that provides a platform for the development of programs and projects which are conducted hand-in-hand with both communities. Mater Conexo allows us to construct a horizontal relationship in which there is mutual respect, promoting local development and allowing full involvement of its members in operations both inside andoutside of Mil.

Many different native botanicals are found on the route, including wild roots and flowers, aromatic plants, plants used for dying and medical purposes. Aside from forming an important part of our neighbors’ diets, the majority of these plants are also used for medicinal purposes and as dyes for artesanal textiles. Among these plants are huallhua (genus monnina), mullaska (muehlenbeckia volcanica), cheqche (berberis humbertiana), and pili pili (taraxacum officinale).

MIL Mil is a multidisciplinary interpretation centre where art, science, investigation, experimentation, innovation, and cuisine are intertwined in order to create a unique experience via a tasting menu focused on high altitude ecosystems.
