In the Parasha of Miketz, dreams become the instrument through
which Hashem's plans are fulfilled.
This parsha is the story of a man's dreams realized.
We begin with Yosef being released from prison so he can
interpret the king’s nightmares. Yosef receives the blessings of
Hashem, the wisdom and insight to interpret Pharaoh's night-
mares. When Pharaoh asked Yosef to interpret his dreams, Yosef
answers, "It is not in me, but Hashem will give Pharaoh an answer
of peace." The dreams of the great Shepherd King of Egypt
have become a part of Jewish history. How was Yosef able to
give Pharaoh the precise interpretation of his dreams? Did
Hashem put words into his mouth? Chazal, (our rabbis) tell us
that Hashem had Yosef dream that exact dream of Pharaoh
and at exactly the same time. Therefore, he was able to
understand and interpret the dreams to Pharaoh's satisfaction.
There is an inclination to understand and interpret events in
history in the light of our own times. "What would this event mean
today?" is the implicit question with which we approach history.
This week we celebrate the festival of lights, Chanukah. This
joyous holiday is interpreted today according to the ideals and
insights of the contemporary world, perhaps overlooking aspects
of that period because they mean less to us today. In a time of
national independence and individual liberty it has become
popular to present Chanukah as the festival of those ideals,
liberation from our enemies, having our own state of Israel, and
freedom of worship. I believe however, that the focus of the
Maccabees revolt was not because the Greeks denied us
freedom of religion but because we were determined to follow
the Torah and its teachings and that led to necessary revolt and
subsequent independence.
It for this reason that we should pay attention to the candle we
call the Shamash. Because it is the Shamash that lights all the
other candles. All the other candles take light but the Shamash
gives light. In a world that is too often selfish, the Shamash
teaches selflessness. In a world where people invariably ask,
"What's in it for me?" the Shamash asks, "What can I do for you?"
Yosef Hatzadik, introduced himself as the Hebrew who was stolen
from his fathers house. He taught his brothers it is better to give
then to take. It is better to light then to be lit. It is better to
forgive and love then to harbor ill feelings towards others.
Today when the US has abstained from a vote at the UN
declaring all settlements as occupied territories, the Kotel and
the Jewish Quarter are now declared illegal settlements. As we
light our Chanukah candles, let the light shine brightly to the
world at large and the UN that we will never abandon our holy
sites to foreign domination. As our candles light the world we
rededicate ourselves to Hasham and Torah and the Temple
Mount area as our everlasting holy shrine dedicated to the
benefit of Hashem and his chosen people.
R’Elias cont.
Parashat Miketz/Chanukah
Dear Congregants,
I write this week with a heavy heart. This past week of Cha-
nukah, which was supposed to be infused with Hallel
V'Hoda'ah to HaKadosh Baruch Hu, was stricken with
da'agot, worries and fears. The unprecedented manner in
which our current U.S. leadership has abandoned Israel is
jarring and unwarranted. We feel, once again, that we are
fighting the 'few against the many, the pure amongst the
defiled' enemies of Am Yisrael. We know Israelis yearn for
peace; it is part of our daily prayers.
What can we do? At the end of last week's parasha we are
told the Sar HaMashkim didn't remember Yosef, and he for-
got him, "V'lo zacha Sar HaMashkim et Yosef Vayish-
kacheyhu." In his last perush on Parashat Vayeshev Rashi
explains that Yosef was decreed to spend an extra two
years in jail (before the Sar HaMashkim recommended
Yosef to interpret Paroh's dreams), because Yosef placed
his faith and circumstances in the hands of the Sar HaMash-
kim, and not squarely with the Ribbono Shel Olam. Ultimate-
ly, Yosef needed to use his own skill and talent to gain
Paroh's trust and service, but he never failed to
acknowledge Hashem's provenance and guidance in his
life.
This also happens to be one of the primary themes of Cha-
nukah. Despite outside influences and cultural fads, we
must never waver in our commitment to the Mesorah, to
our minhagim and halachot, our faith and our heritage.
We must do what we can during these trying times to sup-
port Eretz Yisrael, and we must never forget that, ultimately,
HaKadosh Baruch Hu has the final word. Let us never forget!
Shabbat Shalom and Chanukah Sameach!
