Dear Alums, A funny thing happened when we arrived at camp last spring. Northern Wisconsin had experienced a lot of snow all winter long, and plenty of rain in the early spring. The result being the boardwalk, from one end to the other, was completely submerged. You could still walk on it, but you’d be ankle deep in water. So, while celebrating the lake level being once again at historic highs, we had to do something about the boardwalk! We did what we know best…we put a ton of guys to work and section-by-section we jacked it up, and braced it with new cement blocks. It only took about 3 weeks to get it all done, and….it wasn’t quite enough. The lake continued to rise during much of the summer (which is unusual), and boat wakes would occasionally crest over the boardwalk. Adding more blocks was not really feasible any longer. It was getting a little tippy. After the campers went home, we resorted to drastic measures. Within a week of their departure in August, a local company arrived with a work boat, several big guys, and some cool tools, and they ripped the whole boardwalk out. Took ‘em a fraction of the time it would have taken us. They then proceeded to build and install a brand new boardwalk that is on legs sunk several feet into the bed of the lake. That thing is rock solid! And it’s adjustable!! We are going to be so spoiled on the shores of Lake Towanda from this point forward. We hope you’ll come up and admire it with us. The swim area also saw the addition of a floating rope swing last summer. Our blob had served us well, but sprung a leak the year before, so this was our new addition to add some more excitement to free swims. Mission accomplished! This winter has brought more snow again to the area, and camp has been buried! Fortunately, we got a lot of our projects for this year completed during the fall. New roofs here and there, new siding on the Hal Shop, and lots of other nice touches are visible all over. We invested in tons (literally) of dirt last year fixing up the driveway, the parking area behind the Rec Hall, and eliminating the small pond (Towanda West we called it) that would form by the Trip Shack during periods of “heavy dew.” We will hit the ground running in a few months, and be more than ready for another group of excited campers to roll in. Last summer was such a great experience for everyone. We had a strong enrollment, a fun and committed staff (as usual), and Mother Nature sent us a wide variety of weather. At the start of the summer, we had 5 straight days with high temps in the upper 50s. Sure, we would have preferred more warmth, but hats off to our campers! They still got in the lake to ski, swim, and sail, and they showed no signs of slowing down. We were truly impressed. Our camp appeal has continued to build in a wide range of cities across the country, and we’ve seen some growth in Colorado, California, Texas, and Tennessee. We’ve also experienced a really nice surge in the number of 2 nd Generation Campers…kids whose dads also camped with us. If you think being a camper was fun (you’re right…), wait till you experience the sensation of being a camp dad! How cool is it to share some awesome camp memories and experiences with your son?! We know the answer. It’s very, very cool. Here's some amazing news…this will be BILL MILLER’S 25 th summer at camp. Bill is a brilliant and very caring guy who has served as our Kitchen Manager for all these years. Our reputation of having superb food is well deserved, and a real tribute to Bill. If you have dined on Bill Miller food in your camp days, and you’d like to send along a congratulatory note to Bill, please email it to [email protected]. We’ll compile messages for Bill and give them to him. He doesn’t do email himself…of course. Thanks very much. The past year has been a particularly successful one for CAMP FOR ALL KIDS. Not only did our program send more kids to camp than ever before, but we also added another boys’ camp to the group, giving us an even number of boys’ and girls’ camps. In additi on, we have expanded our network of schools in Chicago and St. Louis. The Timberlane group of CFAK kids grew to include 12 boys, and we were thrilled to have them with us. We are excited to tell you about the main fund-raising event for CFAK, taking place in April: COCKTAILS AROUND THE CAMPFIRE. This will be a fun evening for us all to spend together while assuring we can continue to send these wonderful and deserving kids to camp. Please click here to check it out. We hope you’ll join us. Our Green Grows the Camperships program was very strong again last year – its 2nd summer. Once again we asked our staff if they want to make a donation from their camp paychecks, and then we solicited matching donations from our alumni and current camp parents. More than 40 people answered the call, including 25 alums. Combining our staff donations and all the matching contributions (some above and beyond the match), we raised over $20,000 to help send wonderful kids to fantastic camps. Our thanks to the following alumni who joined in the effort: JIMMY ANSFIELD, PAUL ARABIE, BILL & DEBBIE BERK, BOB & ALEXIS BERK, MICHAEL BREEN, GARY GARTEN, GARY & NANCY GORCHOFF, JON HEALY, MIKE KANOVITZ, DOUG KAPLAN, BILL KRAVIT, JON

LEOPOLD, GRANT LINSKY, MARTIN LYNCH, JEFF MOSSLER, DAVID RASKIN, PERRY RICHKER, ADAM

ROCHMAN, HOWARD

ROTHENBERG, JD RUBIN, MIKE SCHAFFER, BILLY SIEGEL, SCOTT SONTAG, JEREMY WACKSMAN, and BRIAN WILLIAMS We also want to acknowledge our awesome alumni who added their support for CFAK through the

past year: ROBERT BELUSHI, JASON BERGER, JOSH BERTMAN, BEN BRONSON, ROSS CAHN, BRIAN COHEN, TOM “DUTCH” COHEN, JEREMY COHN, DAN CONROE, GABE CONROE, STUART COWLES, MARTY DRAPKIN, MATT FLANZER, JOEL HART, JIM HIKEN, TODD KESTIN, BRUCE LERNER, PHIL LUCOFF, JACOB LURIE, JIM MIRINGOFF, DANNY & SABRINA PLATTNER, BEN REMIS, GREG SCHATTEN, KEN SHAPIRO, and DAVID SIEGEL. We appreciate all the support. There are thousands of Timberlane alumni out there, many hundreds of whom will read this newsletter. We’d be very grateful to have more of you join us in this amazing program. You can donate anytime by clicking here. Thanks very much.

Last summer,

alumnus GRANT LINSKY sent us some great stuff from his camp days that he thought was better suited for camp than his basement. It included some photos, old Timberbat jackets, etc. He was kind enough to place them in beautiful frames, which we have displayed on the wall in the Rec Hall. We got to thinking about how nice it would be to use that space as a sort of Timbelane Museum, so we invite any of our alums who have memorabilia you are willing to part with (and is in good shape) to contact us. If it is a good fit, we’ll put it up for all to enjoy. Thanks very much.
