President Linda Carter presents Mika Liu with Championship trophy

Championship Final Reduced to 18 holes due to weatherAt 10:15 a.m. on June 6, 2014 a teenager teed off with a veteran collegiate golfer in the Women’s

Southern Golf Association’s 99th Amateur Championship and both made history. Mika Liu’s even parqualifying round was good enough to capture the Junior Medalist award at the Tuesday night banquet. But, could a 15 year old golfer, attending a college preparatory sports school have the experience and

talent to conquer the four inch rough of Gaillardia’s course or the strength to fight the wind?

History was on Liu’s side and poised to repeat. In 2009 a 14 year old teen came out of Florida, charmed an entire golf community, won Junior Medalist and proceeded to take the crown from a veryexperienced two time WSGA Champion. This teen nicknamed “Lexi” was Alexis Thompson; she faced

a veteran golfer with two WSGA titles in Virginia Derby Grimes and smiled her way to victory.

History did repeat itself despite the amazing talented play of Jayde Panos, the Oklahoma Stategraduating senior golfer that had been highly recruited from Perth, Australia. Panos played an almostflawless round carding five birdies and two bogeys. But, the teenage wonder had six birdies and onebogey, announcing to the world that she has found her passion early. Neither rough nor wind seemedto phase the teen, she seemed on a mission to see if every shot could simply be her best shot. Panosreached the 18th green but could go no further as she had simply run out of holes in the weather

shortened event.

The name Mika Liu will be forever engraved on the Championship trophy as she takes her place inhistory. On the line next to her will be Finalist: Jayde Panos on every program for the WSGA

Amateur. The WSGA is all about providing the tournament opportunities for women golfers of theSouthern States to make their own history.

Mika Liu of Bradenton, FL

WSGA News Release June 5, 2014

After a day of quarterfinal rounds and semi final rounds the Championship Stage is finally set.

A graduate of Oklahoma State University from Perth, Australia, Jayde Panos is living in Stillwater, OKand trying to launch a postcollegiate career in business, marketing, golf or a combination of the three.

She proved she has the game to launch a golf career as she defeated Lucy Nunn, 2008 WSGAChampion in the quarters. She won her semi final afternoon match against Maggie Beth Byers of theBaylor Bear’s Golf team. Byers had dispensed the medalist Shelby Martinek of Tampa, Florida in the

quarterfinals.

At the other end of the bracket Liu played Liu and a Liu won. But, it was the younger Mika Liu, thetournament’s Jr. Medalist, besting her elder 5 & 4. Mika is a smiling 15 year old hitting the books andgolf course at IMG Academy, a college preparatory sports school in Bradenton, FL. Sister Marika is on

the Yale Golf Team.

In the afternoon match Mika Liu faced Kayli Quinton, who with teammate Summar Roachell hadcaptured the team trophy for the University of Arkansas. Mika had a very tight match with Quinton, who kept trying to match Mika’s error free play. Quinton had faced Emee Herbert, the 2012 WSGA

Champion in the early morning round to gain the semi spot.

Click on the days scoring for a look at other matches. Remember the crowning of the 2014 Championwill take place immediately after a winner is determined in the 36hole play off. The contestants willtake a break after the first 18; then strike out on the second 18 finishing when one player is up more

holes than left to play.

The public is welcome inside the gates of Gaillardia to follow the Championship match. A teen with asmile that will not go away, and an experience collegiate golfer headed out to make her way after

graduation from college will definitely be an interesting match.

Other finals in flights and consolation flights will be finished after 18 holes. Only the Championshipfinal is a 36 holes Match Play event.

Thursday’s Quarterfinals have been set.

Here are the round of 8 that will square off on Thursday morning.

WSGA News Release June 5, 2014

The beginning of the end as the field is reduced to 8.

The WSGA’s Amateur tournament at Gaillardia Country Club got a taste of summer as temperaturessoared to near 100 degrees before the Championships Flight had finished. Players quickly realized

why Oklahomans love the wind; it is their cooling friend on hot summer days.

The ink dried quickly in the wind to reveal the states of the south that still has a chance to crown achampion. Florida has 3 chances, Texas and Oklahoma with 2 a piece and Georgia with 1.

Florida has the number one seed Shelby Martinek of Tampa rested and ready for the quarters. Thenumber 3 seed and 22 seed from Bradenton just happen to be sisters and scheduled to face each

other in the match today. So, at least one Floridian will make the semi finals for sure. Mika Liu, the Jr.Medalist, will face sister, Marika, a student at Yale.

The host State has a past champion and a Stillwater golfer with an Australian accent ready to be thesecond Oklahoman in 99 years to win. Lucy Nunn of Lawton, the first Oklahoma champion thinks sixyears is not too long for a repeat. But, Jayde Panos of Stillwater has no problem representing the

state for a change of accent.

Kayli Quinton part of the Arkansas team winning the team trophy is from Pilot Point, TX. This number7 seed has a fellow Texan, the number 8 seed Maggie Beth Byer of San Antonio. Byer is the onlyBaylor University player to make the trip; its seems everyone else on the team are international

students headed home for the summer.

Action starts early today as the tournament must eliminate six players until the sun sets. Winners ofthe quarter final matches will get a rest and some food and head right out on to the course in the

afternoon to face another opponent.

WSGA News Release – June 4, 2014 A display of endless silver trays and platters lined one wall of the stately banquet hall of GaillardiaCountry Club as players, guests and officials of the WSGA and the country club arrived for the specialawards dinner. In the center of this was the Championship Trophy; it became a perpetual trophy in1925. Across from the individual awards to be awarded on Friday as flight winners are determined,

Page 26: Mika Liu wins 2014 WSGA Amateur Championship Womens

http://www.womenssoutherngolfassociation.org/?page_id=2800 26/40

was a small group of special perpetual trophies that will find a home for a year displayed right next tothe podium.

Those perpetual trophies have been housed in homes or collegiate trophy cases all over theSouthern States. Not until 2007 did the lowest qualifying score get a perpetual trophy. The 13 year oldAlexa Stirling of Atlanta who qualified with a 95 did not get a trophy to display for a year at her highschool. But, Shelby Martinek of Tampa, Florida will have a choice of taking the Evelyn Monsted

Trophy back to Tampa or Tempe for display in the University of Arizona athletic trophy case. Her twounder par 70 won by a stroke over Summar Roachell of Conway, AR and The University of Arkansas

women’s golf team.

But, Summar Roachell will have one of those special trophies to take home to Arkansas. TeammateKayli Quinton combined her even par round to give the duo the coveted Team Trophy with a total 143.

The Marguerite Gaut Trophy for the lowest qualifying round of a player 50 or over was established in1948 and went to the host state. Chrissy Bagwell of Edmond will consider placing the trophy at

Kickingbird Golf Club for all to see or having it home to remind her daily of a very special round of 75.

The Junior medalist was assigned to drive the cart in the qualifying round. But, did not meet therequirements of 16 years of age to drive a golf cart. She quickly switched with her playing companionand went out and shot 72. Mika Liu of Bradenton, Florida was all smiles as she accepted the Junior

honor to take to IMG Academy where she had just finished her 9th grade exams.

The low net award went to the mid handicapper Chelsea Burney from Amarillo, TX of Rogers StateUniversity. While the course was not favorable to most midhandicappers, Burney managed a net 68 to

steal the award from the field.

The WSGA tries to make the awards banquet short and sweet so players can get home andprepare for their early rounds. But, this was a unique year as players lingered to get a chance to chatwith the guest speaker, Suzy Whaley of Farmington, CT. Whaley will not be a detriment to the girlsroutine as her inspirational talk about playing as a qualifier in a PGA event will help each remember it

is only a game. Whaley had parents and players alike in tears of laughter as she described theprimeval fright which immobilized her as she walked on the first green and realized she had to putt infront of 60,000 fans and the media feed to every corner of the world. She just wanted to withdraw and

go home.

Check out the pictures from the banquet and you will see that smile that captivated a world whenshe finally got the third putt in the hole a decade ago.

Action continues today as we face the “fear of packing day”. Hotels are hoping their players canextend their stay in Oklahoma with a win today.

It was Shelby Martinek of Tampa, Florida that dipped below par with a stellar round of 70 during thequalifying round at the WSGA Amateur match play annual event. Martinek will be returning to the

University of Arizona Wildcat Ladies Golf team as a senior this fall with a story to tell out of the plainsof Oklahoma of a special day when morning rain made the greens very receptive to long range

attacks.

The rain clouds were moving east just as players reached the practice range and began their warmuproutines. All had hopes of making that Championship flight and all knew it would be hard with a fieldso strong with 16 players with handicaps better than par and 12 more players still under 1 handicap. Add 19 more players under a 3 handicap and have them all face the Oklahoma rough and wind and

see if the cream rises to the top.

The cream did rise to the top as all past champions in the field made the championship flight.Defending Champion Hally Leadbetter was two short of the medalist with an even par round. EmeeHerbert 2012 Champion shot 76 and Lucy Nunn 2008 champion shot 75. Corinna Rees and LeeAnnFairlie former finalist will be teeing it up in the championship flight trying once again to get to that 36

hole final match on Friday June 6.

The two high school students in the field managed to also make the Championship flight, Mika Liu ofBradenton, FL and Anna Hack of Murray, KY

Oklahoma was well represented with 13 in the Championship flight. Jayde Panos of Stillwater led theOklahomans with a par 72.

Match Play action begins with the Championship Flight leading the way at 8:30 a.m. with the playersgoing off two by two in classic match play form. The public is welcome to come and follow players orcamp out at the scoreboard and see who makes the round of sixteen and who falls to the consolation

side of brackets.

99th Amateur Field Set and Ready for a June 2 Start

The Women’s Southern Golf Association has a stellar field lined up for its’ 99th Amateur June2nd at Gaillardia Country Club in Oklahoma City. Jo Glenn, entry chairman reports that this isone of the strongest fields in WSGA history with the top 32 player handicaps 1.1 or better andthe top 48 under 3 or better. In the field are the Defending Champion Hally Leadbetter of

Bradenton, FL and two other past champions. Two Finalist who have their names forever inour tournament history also are in this very talented group of golfers. Not since 1994 has a

defending champion repeated her win. But, a finalist in 2006, Stacy Lewis, came back to win in2007 and afterwards launched a career on the LPGA tour.

As the tournament unfolds with the qualifying round June 2, history has a chance of being redefined with such a loaded group of low handicappers entering the gates of Gaillardia. If theOklahoma wind and native grass is friendly, this group my just break the low qualifying round

of 66 held by a trio from the past.

Eleven of the WSGA Member Southern States have entries with Oklahoma and Texas loadedwith the most contestants. The final tally and bragging rights will be go to the host State with

27 entries with Texas four players short of matching Oklahoma.

Alabama’s WSGA State Representative, Susan West of Tuscaloosa and Lea Green of McCallaare the states best mid amateur hope of making the Championship Flight. Both played in the2013 Amateur hosted by the State of Alabama. Heather Hail 2013 Jr. Medalist from Hartselle isreturning to give Alabama a younger edge. Hail has just completed her freshman year at the

University of Mobile.

Arkansas’ hopes are led by a senior with Hall of Fame by her name and a trio of University ofArkansas teammates. Tanna Lee Richard’s name has been a part of Arkansas Golf for decadeswinning her a 2006 induction into the Arkansas Golf Hall of Fame. Her classic rhythmic swingadvanced her to the round of sixteen last year. Richard also has her eye on the Senior Medalistperpetual trophy. The University of Arkansas Razorback team will have three young guns tochallenge the links of Gaillardia: Olivia Lavy of Fayetteville, Summer Roachell of Conway andKayli Quinton of Pilot Point, TX. They have a viable chance of taking the team trophy back to

the University of Arkansas trophy case.

Florida has more wins than any other state in the 98 WSGA Championships. ReigningChampion Hally Leadbetter will be back to defend her crown after a successful year as aworkhorse for Rollins College golf team in Winter Park, FL. Leadbetter’s hometown of

Bradenton, Fl has thrown in a couple of sisters with game in Miraka Liu and Mika Liu. Bothtrain at the IMG Academy. Mika is just finishing up her ninth grade exams and will be a

contender for Jr. Medalist. Miraka is on the Yale University golf team.

Tampa has a University of Arizona golfer ready to challenge for a spot in the championshipflight in Shelby Martinek as well as a young gun with international experience, Shannon Aubert

of Championsgate. Aubert has signed to play for Stanford University in 2014.

Note that in 1936, the last WSGA Amateur on Oklahoma soil, a Floridian named Mrs. MarkMcGarry took the trophy all the way back to Florida after a surprise upset against Betty

Jameson of TX who was the 1934 WSGA Champion and heavily favored by the press. Jamesona decade later was a cofounder of the LPGA tour. So, watch out for Florida; their year roundtropical practice friendly weather has a way of producing winners throughout WSGA history.

The lone entry from Georgia has already worn the Amateur Crown. Emee Herbert of JohnsCreek, GA was one of the first to enter hoping to once again bring the trophy back to Georgia. The 2012 Champion plays for Coastal Carolina University and has proven she has the mental

edge for match play with her grueling win in 2012 against Rika Park of Florida.

Anna Hack of Murray, Kentucky is another lone state player. Hack has pledged to play for theKentucky Wildcats upon completion of high school; but for now she is eying the JuniorMedalist honor and a chance to make the State of Kentucky proud on Oklahoma soil.

Both Louisiana and Mississippi have state championships that conflict with the WSGAAmateur this year. Louisiana might make the championship flight on the coattails of TaylorThompson of Baton Rouge. This Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference freshman forCentenary College was named Conference Player of the week for April 1st, 2014.

North Carolina has the lowest handicapper in the field Evelyn Dole of Raleigh. Dole has a lot ofexperience playing the WSGA Amateur starting as a teen in 2011. In 2012 she was juniorMedalist. Dole now plays for the University of Virginia. She is the only player from North

Carolina making the trip west.

Oklahoma the proud host state has flooded the field with players all hoping to be the one togain another crown for the state. The list of players hoping to capitalize on their experience

playing in the legendary Oklahoma wind includes a senior with Hall of Fame by her name, midamateurs and collegiate standouts. The elder player hoping to challenge for the Senior

Medalist as well as the crown is LeeAnn Fairlie of Oklahoma City. She amazingly is already inour history pages as the 1986 Finalist. You will find her name printed in our program as LeeAnnHammack a couple of decades back. She played on the futures tour for four years in the late

80’s but did not regain her amateur status until 1998. Fairlie was inducted in the Oklahoma GolfHall of Fame in 2012.

Oklahoma collegiate golfers are taking advantage of an Amateur in their own state. The line uphas players from more universities than any other of the southern states. The list seemsendless with the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, Oklahoma ChristianUniversity, Oklahoma City University, the University of Central Oklahoma and Rogers State

University.

Beware the line up from Oklahoma City University as they get to sleep in their own beds. OneCaroline Goodin actually plays Gaillardia on a regular basis. She might have a little home

course advantage. Goodin’s teammate Kailey Campbell of Oktaha is the lowest handicapper ofthe OCU group. She is hoping to combine a low score with one of her teammates to capturethe qualifying round team trophy for OCU. Possibilities to join for the two lowest scores fromOCU are one of those mathematical probabilities to solve. But, six players are representing

Oklahoma City University. Beside mentioned above Goodin and Campbell, the following add tothis powerful golf mixture: Anna Mikish of Choctaw, Abby Thompson of Edmond, KatieLee

Wilson of Owasso, and Reagan Barnes of Choctaw.

In match play do not count out the midamateur who played in the past on collegiate teamsand now are midamateurs. Jennifer Hays of Edmond managed to grab Oklahoma Medalist

honors at the USGA 2013 Mid Am Qualifier.

Another midamateur Erika Salinas led Sacramento City College to its first RegionalChampionship back in 2010. She was student athlete of the year for the academic year 200910for Sacramento City College. Born and raised in California this golfer rekindled her Indian

Heritage after playing a tournament in Oklahoma. After graduation she moved to Oklahoma tofind her roots in the Comanche and Kiowa tribes of Oklahoma. Salinas now works and lives in

Apache and tries to inspire other Native American to take up the game of golf.

But with all these young players the real hope for Oklahoma might be shared by Mid AmateurLucy Nunn of Lawton, the 2008 Champion and Jade Staggs of Oklahoma City the 2013

Oklahoma State Amateur Champion.

Nunn spent 2 and ½ year chasing her dream on the LPGA tour after her collegiate career at theUniversity of Arkansas. She regained her Amateur status in June of 2012 while assistant

coach for the University of Kentucky in Lexington. She just completed a successful stint asassistant coach for the UK Wildcats and has returned to her hometown of Lawton.

Jade Staggs of Oklahoma City has had a dream to play on the tour since a child. All her golfhas been played with that dream in mind. Her match play victory over the state amateur field inJuly 2013 has kept that dream viable. Beware the player with dreams of greatness and a past

champion with years playing at the highest level.

Chelsea Buford from San Antonio, TX plays for the College of Charleston in Charleston, SouthCarolina. She and WSGA Director Judy Allardice of Aiken are the only players representing

South Carolina

Tennessee has the 2010 Finalist Corinna Rees formerly a University of Arkansas star nowrepresenting Nashville. Rees took Leadbetter to an exhausting 19th hole before losing to the

eventual champion in 2013. Nashville has two others that hope to break into the championshipflight. Amberlee Brooks will be the petite law student with a powerful flowing swing and

Evelyn Backmon will be the towering senior who still challenges the youth with her distance.

Texans have plans to cross the border in caravans from all parts of the State. A couple of redshirted Freshman from UT will be attempting to make a their names know. Anna Hakula ofAustin by way of Finland and Sara Scarlett of Woodlands CA. Tezira Abe another UT golferfrom Angleton is a regular on the team. The three hope for two to go low enough to win thatteam trophy. There is also a Net Medalist award that history proves is freshman friendly.

Stephen F. Austin University has a very talented golfer Ann Holcomb from Crockett. She is oneof the sub zero handicappers in the field and may challenge for medalist and a crown.

Mid Amateurs Lindsey Hughes of Plano and Linda Jeffery of Abilene hope their experience inhot Texas wind will carryover to the neighboring state.

A couple of senior golfers from TX still have game to humble a few collegiate golfers. Bewarelefty Carol Turnage of Anna, Janie Carpenter of Garland, Marlene Summers of Montgomery,

and 2011 Amateur Senior medalist Leslie Henry of Carrollton.

No players calls Virginia home; but Evelyn Doyle plays for the University of Virginia. So, all ofVirginia will be watching this former Junior Star from North Carolina.

On paper the historic 99th playing of the Women’s Southern Amateur is shaping up to be ahistory maker. Will the tournament qualifying record of 66 fall? Will a defender make historywith a win? Will Oklahoma finally crown a second champion? Will the wind conquer? All these

questions will be answered soon within the gates of Gaillardia Country Club.

Action begins with registration on June the 1st followed by arranged practice rounds ofplayers. The real excitement will be who qualifies for the 32 spots of the championship flightJune 2. That lone shade tree near the scoreboard will be home to many anxious players asthey await the posting of qualifying scores. The threat of a sudden death playoff for those

tying for the last spot always adds excitement to qualifying day. Spectators often gather roundthe scoreboard in the late afternoon after all 80 players have finished waiting to follow a

sudden death group tied for the last spots.

Match play begins on Tuesday the 3rd of June with 32 in the championship flight and 16 in theremaining flights. Regardless of a win or loss in this first round all players will find their way tothe qualifying round awards banquet for a not only a special treat from the chef but a uniqueguest speaker in Suzy Whaley. Whaley made her own history as the first women since famed

Babe Dickerson to qualify for a PGA tour event.

Medalist, Senior Medalist, Junior Medalist, Team Trophy and Low Net Medalist awards will bepresented at the Tuesday dinner.

The week will progress to a moment when only two players remain undefeated. Fridaymorning June 6th two players will start out on an adventure together to make history. Both

players will be forever written in our history but only one will be the 2014 Champion.

Spectators are invited to come join in this week of history making amateur golf inside the gatesof Gaillardia. Don your sunscreen and your walking shoes. Beware just watching the swings

of this level of golf will take strokes off your own game.

You can follow the daily action on the WSGA Website at www.womenssoutherngolfassociation.org. Daily scoring and pairings will be listed as well as the medalist

winners. You can also read more about the organization from officers to past champions, fromour scholarship winners to future tournaments. Just navigate the web world of an organization

that began with women’s golf history in the USA over a hundred years ago.

Qualifying Round June 2, 2014

Format: Match play begins June 3rd. (top 32 qualifiers make Championship Flight)

Slope/rating: 76.9/144

The WSGA Amateur is finally making a long awaited return to Oklahoma with the 2014 Amateur atGaillardia Country Club in northwestern Oklahoma City. Not since 1936 has the amateur been in theSooner State. Potential players need only look to the Oklahoma State Song, which is straight fromthe Broadway musical, Oklahoma, to prepare their games. The Rodgers and Hammerstein lyricsmention the “wind swooping down the plains” and “plenty of room to swing a rope.” Indeed, the links’style course of the Gaillardia Country Club provides plenty of room to swing a golf club, and swing youmust, as the wind can turn a par four into a par six. Then, just as easily, that wind can help one reach

a long par five in two.

The “waving wheat fields” of the State song will be turned into native grasses and indigenousflowers bordering the landing areas. Each hole will fill your vision with water, sand, hills, trees, and

Page 39: Mika Liu wins 2014 WSGA Amateur Championship Womens

http://www.womenssoutherngolfassociation.org/?page_id=2800 39/40

native grasses. The course, designed by Arthur Hill and refined by Tom Kite, was created to challengethe elite golfer with risk rewards sprinkled among holes demanding precision driving. Yet, thearchitects managed to keep the course playable and enjoyable for the average club players.

No hint of Gaillardia Country Club facilities and grounds can be found in the song “Oklahoma”. Thegrand iron and stone entrance, the stately rooms with towering ceilings and manicured garden lawnssurrounding the clubhouse belong in a 16th century English novel instead of the plains of Oklahoma.

The community and golf facilities were developed by the Gaylord family in 1998 and named after apopular garden flower. The goal of the Gaylord Corporation was to build a premier community andgolf course to attract top professionals to Oklahoma City. With the huge medical complex within view

of the course, doctors could have lunch at home or skip lunch for a quick nine holes of golf.

It was not long after its opening that Gaillardia gained national attention with Phil Mickelson andFreddy Couples playing in a Shell Wonderful World of Golf match on national television. In 2001 and

2002 the PGA held two Champions Tour events with Bob Gilder and Tom Watson winning.

Gaillardia Country Club has several websites that show additional photographs of this incredibleproperty and surrounding community. The fitness center’s web page has a photo spread of the

community and facilities, while the Country Club sites can give you more professional pictures of thecourse, the Gaylord golf training center, and the pro shop. Those amateurs who hope to be a June

bride one day need to also look at the wedding website as Gaillardia Country Club hosts an average of30 weddings a year.

Below are some pictures taken in August 2013 as an advanced guard of the WSGA visited GaillardiaCountry Club and tested the course with an Amateur in tournament in mind.
