MIFF 2020 KICK STARTS WITH A COLORFUL AND VIBRANT INAUgURAL CEREMONY

Mumbai International Film Festival 2020 kickstarts with a colourful and

vibrant opening ceremony where the coveted Dr. V Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award was conferred on Dr. S. Krishnaswamy, one of India’s most senior and active filmmakers, “for his lifelong, invaluable contribution to non-fiction filmmaking”. The prestigious award is presented in every edition of MIFF, to a filmmaker for seminal contribution to documentary films and its movement in India. It carries a cash award of 10 lakh rupees, trophy and a citation.

The Chief Guest for the opening ceremony, Minister of State for Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Shri Babul Supriyo and the Guest of Honour, Minister for Cultural Affairs & Medical

Education, Government of Maharashtra, Shri Amit Vilasrao Deshmukh presented the award to Dr. Krishnaswamy. The son of the late doyen filmmaker V. Shantaram - Shri Kiran Shantaram was also present on the occasion, when the award was conferred upon him by Shri Babul Supriyo and Shri Amit Deshmukh.

Receiving the award, the veteran filmmaker who had produced and directed the four hour long documentary From Indus Valley to Indira Gandhi way back in 1976 said ” It is very difficult for the voice to come up when you are on cloud nine. It is a great privilege to receive this award from the documentary film making fraternity and Films Division at the hands of Minister of State Shri Babul Supriyo and the State Minister Shri Amit Vilasrao Deshmukh. I also deem

it a great privilege to have V. Shantaram’s son with us to represent the great tradition and bestow me with this honour.”

The Minister of State Shri Babul Supriyo said that it was back in 1948 that the pre-independence ‘Information Films of India’ gave way to transform itself into what we know today as ‘Films Division’. “What is remarkable about Films Division is its contribution to the documentary culture in the country as it has always strived to promote and nurture the documentary film, which is one of the most important mediums of audio-visual storytelling. One of the avenues through which it has been able to cement its position as an influential force in the world of documentary is through MIFF.

The Minister s also conceded that it is only if one believes in

oneself and his idea that one can succeed in the film industry. “I am very proud that iconic films of legendary filmmakers such as Satyajit Ray are presented at this edition of MIFF. I wish I could come back again to watch Rabindranath Tagore and Pikoo in this year’s edition of MIFF. I am also excited to know about some of the many highlights of this edition which includes a special package of films from European Union, Animation package from Russia, Finland and Balkan. Oscar nominated films such as Fauve, Detainment and Night at the Garden would also be screened while Ireland will showcase its best documentaries in the Country Focus section.”

He said that the Government of India has always been extending support in strengthening the documentary film movement and Films Division has been contributing to this movement, as well as towards preserving the rich cinematic history of India. “The non-feature genre got a boost in 1990 with the birth of MIFF and today MIFF is considered one of the best international platforms for non-feature films and filmmakers. MIFF, in a small and impactful way, tries to the rise to the occasion of making positive impact on society. MIFF has gone mobile this year, with a mobile app which provides all information and updates on the festival, he signed off.”

President, Indian Documentary Producers’ Association (IDPA), Smt Usha Deshpande said: “IDPA has been a partner in MIFF right from the beginning. We organize workshops, panel discussions and master classes and present an award for the best student film. This year, in collaboration with

Films Division, we are helping organize special screenings on college campuses. We also try to explore problems and solutions faced by the documentary film industry. The documentary film industry fulfils a very important mission, and we deserve wide support in taking forward this movement.”

Addressing and welcoming the gathering, MIFF festival director and Director General, Films Division, Ms. Smita Vats Sharma said that documentary films hold a mirror to society and play a crucial role in documenting heritage, history and values of a nation and its people. She added, “With this mission in mind, MIFF was conceptualized as a platform to showcase the best in non-fiction filmmaking in 1990. MIFF has grown in stature from year to year. The 16th edition is here with more energy and passion.”

As part of MIFF 2020, she said that screenings of specially curated films will be held at Kalina campus of University of Mumbai, Deviprasad Goenka Management College at Malad and Usha Pravin Gandhi College Campus at Vile Parle to

encourage and engage students at large to get involved in documentary film making and aesthetics. Legendary animation films will be screened at college campuses to attract young students. Ms Smita Vats also added that a mobile app for MIFF has also been launched, this year onwards where festival delegates can access all information and updates on the festival.

A cultural performance organized by India Tourism, Mumbai, showcasing the rich heritage and culture of India by Ms. Harshada Jambekar and her team enthralled the audience with rendition of traditional Maharashtrian folk dance - the very graceful & vibrant ‘lavani’. An eclectic dance performance “Nrutyarang” displayed the

spirit and essence of ‘Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat’, through a confluence of different Indian classical dance styles and choreographed by Odissi exponent Smt. Shubhada Varadkar.

The Festival Director said in her vote of thanks that MIFF has emerged over the years as a platform not only for Indian filmmakers but also for filmmakers from across the world. “MIFF not only recognizes best talents in documentary, short fiction and animation films by bestowing Golden and Silver Conches and trophies, but it also gives away handsome cash awards in different competition categories.

16TH MIFF TO WITNESS A RECORD 729 ENTRIES IN NATIONAL AND 144 IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION FROM 24 COUNTRIES

The 16th MIFF-2020 (Mumbai International Film Festival for

Documentary, Short Fiction and Animation films), was inaugurated on 28th January, 2020 at Nehru Centre Auditorium, Worli. The festival will conclude with an award ceremony at the same venue on 3rd February at 5.00 p.m. Screening and other special events of the festival, the oldest international event for non-feature films in South Asia will be held at Films Division complex at 24, Dr. G. Deshmukh Marg, Mumbai from 29th January to 2nd February, 2020.

The 16th edition of MIFF will be special this year in many respects. Apart from screening of a wide variety of films in competition sections, departed legends of documentary and animation genre will be remembered with special screenings in homage apart from exhibitions on a few of them. Animation lovers will be delighted to savor retrospective packages from three countries and European documentary culture will be revealed through a specially curated package. The delegates of 16th MIFF will experience qualitative as well as diverse content in the current edition.

MIFF attracts film makers from all over the world. The number of entries received this year is testimony to the credibility of the festival. The 16th edition has received a record 729 entries in National and 144 in International competition from 24 countries, which underlines the remarkable response received by the festival.The MIFF 2020 will have a number of attractions such as a special package of films from European Union,Animation package from Russia, Finland and Balkan, Oscar nominated films like Fauve,Detainment and Night at the garden.

Ireland will showcase its best documentaries in the Country Focus section.Similarly,curated films from North-East India, best of various International Film Festivals and eminent film maker Satyajit Ray’s films such as Sukumar Ray, Rabindranath Tagore, The inner Eye, and iconic

film Pikoo will be screened. Student films from FTII / SRFTI / NID / FTIT/ Srishti / Craft School/ Whistling Woods add to the list of films eagerly awaited by delegates of MIFF. Other highlights include Open Forum by IDPA, ‘Film Editing’ workshop by B. Lenin, ‘Drone Cinematography’ Workshop by Indian Institute of Drones, Master classes by acclaimed animator Michael Dudok De Wit (Poland), Senior film academician Thomas Waugh (Canada) etc.

Added attractions in MIFF this year are Sculpture and Photo Exhibition-cum-demonstration to Commemorate 150th Birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and celebration of Centenary of Satyajit Ray.MIFF will pay homage to Mrinal Sen, Ram Mohan, Bhimsain Khurana, VG Samant, Vijaya Mule, Manjira Datta etc by screening their select works and also through specially curated exhibition. This edition will also see a participation of intellectually challenged young adults with their short films, in special screenings. Further, films recommended by the Selection Committee will also be screened under MIFF Prism. A mobile app for MIFF has been launched by Smita Vats Sharma ,Festival Director, MIFF and DG, Films Division in a curtain- raiser press conference held in Mumbai Press Club recently. “MIFF 2020 is going mobile.All information on the festival can be accessed via the mobile app. The MIFF app will facilitate the delegates of MIFF to network and vote for films too”, exulted the Film Director. The Festival Director- MIFF further also informed, “MIFF 2020 will facilitate conversations, Q& A sessions and B2B meets between filmmakers and OTT players, to help filmmakers better market their films”. MIFF is a platform not only for Indian film makers but also for film-makers from across the world, she added. Smita Vats Sharma also informed that a special award for the best short film on ‘Water Conservation and Climate Change’ carrying One lakh cash and trophy has been instituted in the current edition of the festival.

Smita Vats Sharma further said “MIFF not only recognizes best talents in documentary, short fiction and animation films by bestowing Golden and Silver Conches and trophies, but it also gives away handsome cash awards in different competition categories. The most prestigious award in the 16th MIFF, the Best Film of the Festival carries a cash prize of 10 Lakh and Golden Conch while other awards carry cash awards varying from five to one Lakh along with Silver Conch, trophy and certificate.

IDPA award carrying Rs One lakh and trophy for the Best student film and Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari Award for the Best Debut Director will also be presented on the closing day. The coveted Dr. V Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award that carries a cash award of Rs 10 lakh, trophy and a citation was presented to filmmaker Shri Krishnaswami for seminal contribution to documentary films and its movement in India in this festival yesterday. महाराष्ट् सरकार के कला, सांसककृ फतक एव ं सवास्थय फशक्ा मंत्री अफमत फवलासराव दशेमखु ने लघ ुफिलमों के फनमायाण में फिलम फडवरीज़न की ऐफतहाफसक भूफमका को दोहराते हुए कहा फक अपनरी 30 साल की यात्ा में फमफ़ 2020 तक आते आते यह फिलम समारोह फवश्व के रिमखु फिलमोतसव में से एक बन गया है। वकृत्तफचत्, लघ ुऔर एफनमेशन फिलमों के फनमायाण और उन्हें सममान फदलाने में मुंबई अतंरराष्ट्रीय फिलमोतसव की भूफमका को हमेशा याद रखा जाएगा। इस मौके पर अपने फपता और महाराष्ट् के पूवया मखुयमंत्री फवलासराव दशेमखु के सांसककृ फतक अवदान को याद करते हुए वे थिोडे भावकु भरी फदखे और अतंत: इस बात की पूररी सभंावना जताई फक फिलम फनमायाण के के्त् में तेजरी से हो रहे बदलाव के बरीच फमफ़ 2020 बलंुफदयों की ओर अग्रसर रहेगा।

इस मौके पर सूचना रिसारण मंत्ालय के एफडशनल सेके्रटररी अतलु कुमार फतवाररी ने अपने उद्ोधन में इस

समारोह को लेकर उतसाह जताते हुए कहा फक लघ,ु वकृत्तफचत् और एफनमेशन फिलमों के फलए समफपयात फमफ़ 2020 ने अपने सथिापना के 30 वषषों में लघ ुफिलमों की अफनवाययाता को बहुत अचछरी तरह से पररभाफषत फकया है।उन्होंने इस समारोह की फवफभन्न शे्फणयों में रिदफशयात की जा रहरी फिलमों को लेकर आशा जताई फक रटे्ोसपेफकटव, सपेशल पैकेज, ओपन िोरम और मासटर कलासेस जैसे रियासों से न फसिया नए और यवुा फिलम फनमायाताओ ंको अपनरी योगयता रिदफशयात करने का मौका फमलेगा बफलक नए फिलम मेकसया और फवद्ाफथियायों के फलए भरी फमफ़ 2020 सरीखने के कई अवसर रिदान करगेा। इस कडरी में उन्होंने मुंबई यूफनवफसयाटरी के कलरीना में होने वालरी सक्रीफनंगस को फवद्ाफथियायों के फलए बेहद महतवपूणया बताया। साथि हरी फिलम रिभाग के पररसर में फपछले माननरीय रिधानमंत्री के द्ारा लोकाफपयात नेशनल मयूफज़यम ऑफ़ इंफडयन फसनेमा की शरुूआत को रखेांफकत करते हुए उन्होंने कहा फक इसे फपछलरी एक सदरी में फिलमों के फवकास का क्रम दजया करने की कोफशश के तौर पर दखेा जाना चाफहए। यह अपने फकसम का एक अलग सगं्रहालय है जहां फिलमों से पयार करने वाले आकर अबतक की फिलमों की यात्ा से पररफचत हो पाएगें। उन्होंने सभरी मेहमानों और दशयाकों से इस सगं्रहालय को दखेने की अपरील की।

इंफडयन वकृत्तफचत् रिोड्यूससया एसोफशएशन की रेिफसडेंट ऊषा दशेपांडे ने इस अवसर पर फमफ़ 2020 में होने वाले मासटर-कलासेस और ओपन िोरम जैसे काययाक्रमों की सराहना की। उनके मतुाफबक यहां उन सभरी मदु्ों पर बात होतरी है जो फिलम बनाते समय चनुौफतयां बनकर सामने आते रहे हैं। सेंसर सफटया फिकेट पाने में होने वालरी समसयाओ ं से लेकर शूफटंग परफमशन को लेकर आने वालरी समसयाओ ं को उन्होंने रखेांफकत फकया।

फमि 2020 के उद्ाटन समारोह में शाफमल सभरी अफतफथियों का आभार वयक्त करते हुए फिलम रिभाग की महाफनदशेक और िेफसटवल डायरकेटर फसमता वतस शमाया ने कहा फक फमफ़ की शरुूआत हमाररी कला और ससंककृ फत को सजंोने और फिलमों के माधयम से दजया करने के फलए हुई थिरी और अपनरी 30 साल की यात्ा में फमफ़ में रिदफशयात लघ,ु एफनमेशन व वकृत्तफचत् फिलमें समाज का यथिाथिया बयान करतरी रहरी हैं। फमफ़ ने हमेशा उभरते और सभंावनाशरील फिलमकारों को मंच और रिोतसाहन दनेे का काम फकया है। इसरी कडरी में एिटरीआई, सतयजरीत र े फिलम ससंथिान और मुंबई के फवशफलंग वडु जैसे फिलम रिफशक्ण ससंथिानों के फवद्ाफथियायों की फिलमों को भरी यहां रिदशयान के फलए चनुा गया है। इसके साथि हरी उन्होंने उममरीद जताई फक 6 फदनों तक चलने वाले फमफ़ 2020 में ओपन िोरम, मासटरकलासेस जैसे आयोजन नए फिलम फनमायाताओ ं और फवद्ाफथियायों के फलए फिलम फनमायाण की बाररीफकयां सरीखने समझने में महतवपूणया साफबत होंगे। फमफ़ 2020 के आयोजन के दौरान महातमा गांधरी की 150वीं जन्मशतरी के अवसर को भरी उन्होंने अहफमयत से रखेांफकत फकया। साथि हरी फमफ़ 2020 के दौरान मकृणाल सेन, फगररश कनायाड, मंफजरा दत्ता, फवजया मलेु, जगदरीश बैनजजी, फदलरीप पटनायक, भानमूुफतया अलरु, भरीमसेन, राममोहन, वरी. जरी. सावतं सफहत फांस के एगनेस वडाया, इटलरी के बनायाडडो बतडोलकुी और चेकसलोवाफकया के फमलोस िमयान को श्कृदाजंफल दरी गई।

डॉ एस. कृष्ासवािी को मिला वी शांताराि लाइिटाइि अिीविेंट अवाड्ड

मुंबई अतंरराष्ट्रीय फिलमोतसव 2020 में रिफसद वकृत्तफचत् फनमायाता डॉकटर एस ककृ ष्णासवामरी को फवखयात वरी शांताराम लाइफ़ टाइम अचरीवमेंट अवाडया से नवाज़ा गया। इस अवसर पर उन्होंने अपने उद्ोधन में फफ़लम फडफवज़न और फमफ़ 2020 को धन्यवाद दतेे हुए कहा फक फफ़लम रिभाग ने हमेशा उनके काम को सराहा है और यह उपक्रम उनके फलए सदवै सहयोगरी रहा है।

इस खास अवसर पर भावकु होते हुए डॉकटर सवामरी ने बताया फक कुछ साल पहले जब मैं अपनरी एक फकताब को पूरा करने के फलए भारत आया थिा तब मझेु इस बात का अहसास नहीं थिा फक एक फदन मैं यहीं रह जाऊँगा। मझेु भारत में बहुत पयार और सममान फमला और यहा ँ की ऐफतहाफसक फवरासत में मैं इतना आतमसात् हो गया फक फिर वापस जा हरी नहीं पाया।

मंच से अपने समबोधन में उन्होंने कहा फक 15 वषषों की कडरी मेहनत और सघन शोध के बाद एक चार घटें लमबरी डॉकयमुेंटररी फफ़लम बनायरी थिरी, फजसे न तो सरकार ने और न हरी फकसरी कोरपोरटे ने सपॉन्सर फकया और न हरी फकसरी तरह की मदद दरी। इस फफ़लम को बनाने में उन्हें बहुत पापड बेलने पडे। फफ़लम भारत की 5000 साल परुानरी भारतरीय फवरासत पर आधाररत है, फजसका शरीषयाक इंडस वैलरी टू इंफदरा गांधरी है। उस फफ़लम को फडफसट्बयूट करने के फलए कोई आगे नहीं आया कयोंफक चार घटें लमबरी फफ़लम को फवतररत करने का कोई तररीका हरी नहीं थिा, तब वॉनयार ब्रदसया ने उन्हें बचाया और उस फफ़लम में फदलचसपरी लरी। तब अचानक एक पूररी तरह से फविल फफ़लम सिलता के नए आयाम रचने लगरी और फिर उन्होंने कभरी परीछे मडुकर नहीं दखेा । फफ़लम 1976 में भारत में ररलरीज़ हुई। उनकी फिलम इसफलए भरी चचाया में रहरी फक ससंद में इस फिलम पर कररीब 40 फमनट तक चचाया हुई। डॉ सवामरी को जब इस बात का पता चला तो उन्हें कोई खशुरी नहीं हुई बफलक उन्होंने कें द् सरकार को एक पत् फलखकर बताया फक अगर 40 फमनट की चचाया की बजाय अगर उनकी फिलम हरी 40 फमनट दखेरी गई होतरी तो उन्हें जयादा खशुरी होतरी। बाद में पूवया गकृहमंत्री लालककृ ष्ण आडवानरी ने इस पूररी फिलम को दखेा और सराहा भरी।

अपने कैररीअर के शरुुआतरी समय में डॉकटर सवामरी ने टरी वरी और फफ़लम फनमायाण में कोलफमबया यूफनवफसयाटरी से फडग्ररी रिाप्त की और भारतरीय फसनेमा के इफतहास पर एक पसुतक फलखने का मन बनाया। इस पसुतक के शोध और पकृष्ठ भूफम जानने के फलए वो भारत आए फिर यहीं बस गए।

उन्होंने दूरदशयान के फलए कई वकृत्तफचत् फफ़लमों का लेखन और फनददेशन फकया और कई परुसकार जरीते। वकृत्तफचत् फफ़लमों को उन्होंने एक नया आयाम फदया और साथि हरी कदम दर कदम फफ़लम फनमायाण में कई आयाम जोड फदए।

उन्होंने 1963 में चेन्नई में ककृ ष्णासवामरी असोफसएट्स के नाम से अपना फवडरीओ रिोडकशन हाउस शरुू फकया जो फक दूरदशयान के बाद भारत में खलुने वाला पहला फवडरीओ रिोडकशन हाउस बना। फजसका मकसद नॉन फफ़कशन फफ़लमों का फनमायाण और रिसार करना थिा। अपने शरुुआतरी दौर में हरी डॉकटर सवामरी की फफ़लमों ने 4 राष्ट्रीय फिलम परुसकार जरीते और दशे फवदशे में फफ़लम फवधा में उनका परचम ऊँचा फकया।

साल 2005 में उन्हें यू एस इंटरनेशनल फफ़लम एडं टेफलफवज़न अवाड्यास के दौरान लाइफ़ टाइम अचरीवमेंट अवाडया से नवाजा गया। इसके अलावा गैर फ़ीचर फफ़लमों में उनके योगदान को दखेते हुए साल 2009 में भारत सरकार ने उन्हें पद्मश्री परुसकार से सममाफनत फकया।

चारू शमाया के साथि खास बातचरीत में उन्होंने अपने जरीवन के कई पहलओु ंको उजागर फकया।

मैं आज सातवें आसमान पर हू,ँ मझेु बहुत खशुरी है फक फफ़लम रिभाग ने मझेु इस काफबल समझा और मझेु सममाफनत फकया। मैं फफ़लम फडफवज़न, भारत सरकार और फमफ़ का बहुत आभाररी हू।ँ

मझेु वरी शांताराम लाइफ़ टाइम अचरीवमेंट परुसकार फदया गया है। मैं शांताराम जरी से अपनरी फकताब के लेखन के दौरान कई बार फमला थिा, आज उनके बेटे के हाथि से ये सममान मझेु फमला है, मझेु बहुत खशुरी है।

मैं आज फपछले कररीब 60 सालों से वकृत्तफचत् फफ़लमें बना रहा हू ँऔर आज मझेु उसका ईनाम फमला है, मझेु बहुत खशुरी है और सतंफुष्ट है। मैं भारत सरकार का बहुत आभाररी हू ँ फक उन्होंने मेर ेयोगदान को सराहा।

आपन े अमरेरका ्स े दफ़लम मदेकंग ्सीखा तो आपन ेवृत्तदचत्र दफ़लमों पर ही कयों अपना फ़ोक्स बनाए रखा?

मैंने जो भरी फकया वो खदु की सोच और समझ से फकया। मैंने खदु अपने फवषय चनेु फजनपर मझेु लगता थिा फक काम होना चाफहए। तो ये सब मैं फकसरी वयापाररक सपॉन्सर के दबाव में नहीं कर सकता थिा। मझेु रचनातमकता से पयार है लेफकन अगर वो बाफधत है तो फिर उस रचनातमकता के मायने बदल जाते हैं। एक बार लोग मझेु जानने लगे तो वो खदु आगे आए और मेररी सोच के साथि उन्होंने सहयोग फकया। मैं मानता हू ँआप जो करना चाहते हो वो करो तो एक फदन लोग आपके नज़ररए के साथि जडुने लगते हैं, उस पर भरोसा करने लगते हैं।

दफ़लम प्रभाग के ्साथ काम करन ेका अनभुव कै्सा रहा ?

फफ़लम रिभाग से मेरा जडुाव बहुत गहरा है। मैं मानता हू ँफक फफ़लम रिभाग को फजतना महतव फमलना चाफहए थिा, उतना नहीं फमला। साल दर साल वकृत्तफचत् फफ़लम फनमायाण को रिोतसाहन दनेे और रिसार के फलए इस ससंथिा ने बहुत कुछ फकया है। आज़ादरी से पहले

से अब तक फजस तरह की ऐफतहाफसक फवरासत को फफ़लम रिभाग ने समभाला है वैसा और कहीं नहीं है।

कया आपको लगता है की आपको ये ्सममान दमलन ेमें िेरी हुई?

नहीं, ऐसा नहीं है, मझेु लगता है शायद मझुसे पहले बहुत से लोगों को उनके कायया और योगदान के आधार पर ये परुसकार फदया जाता रहा है। मेर ेफलए तो अभरी भरी यह एक सखुद आश्चयया जैसा है, कया पता अभरी मझेु और दस साल बाद ये परुसकार फमलता।

कया आप अब भी दक्सी नए दवषय पर काम कर रह ेहैं?

अब मेरा सवास्थय मझेु इसकी इजाज़त नहीं दतेा। अब मेररी दोनों बेफटया ँ और मेररी पतनरी मेर े काम को आगे बढा रहरी हैं। मेररी बडरी बेटरी लता को अभरी उसके काम के फलए अतंरराष्ट्रीय कांस फिलमोतसव में परुसकार फमला है। मेररी छोटरी बेटरी टरीवरी सरीररीयल बनातरी है, तो अब वो मेररी फवरासत को आगे बढा रहरी हैं।

वृत्तदचत्र दिलम दनमामाण में आन ेवाली नयी पीढी के दलए कोई ्सिेंश िेना चाहेंग?े

आज बहुत सरी सफुवधाए ँ हैं, नयरी तकनरीकी से चरीजें आसन हो गयरी हैं। पहले हमार े फलए एक फफ़लम बनाना बहुत मफु्कल हुआ करता थिा, आज वैसा नहीं है। लोग अब डॉकयमुेंटररी फफ़लम की फवधा को समझने लगे हैं। तो मैं यहरी कहना चाहता हू ँकी अपने फदल की सनुो, अपना फवषय चनुो और फनकल पडो फफ़लम बनाने। वकृत्तफचत् फिलमों के फलए आने वाला समय बहुत अचछा है और यह सनुहर ेशबदों में फलखा जाएगा।

छोटी मफ़लिों के सबस ेबड ेिहाकंुभ की तयैाररयां पूरी

मुंबई अतंरराष्ट्रीय फिलमोतसव 2020 का आगाज़ बडे हरी जोरों शोरों से हो चकुा है। मंच तैयार हो चकेु हैं और फनमंत्ण पत् बांटे जा चकेु हैं। दफुनया भर के तमाम फफ़लमकार, लेखक और फसनेमा रेिमरी सात फदन तक चलने वाले इस काययाक्रम में भागरीदाररी करने को लेकर खासे उतसाफहत हैं। बडरी सखंया में लोग फसनेमा के इस उतसव का फहससा बनने फलए रफजसटर करा रहे हैं। रिमखु रूप से फदखाई जाने वालरी फिलमों में दशेरी, फवदशेरी, ऑसकर नाफमत फिलमों के अलावा सतयजरीत र े की वकृत्तफचत् फिलमों का भरी रिदशयान फकया जाएगा। इतना हरी नहीं, फवफभन्न शे्णरीयों में सवडोत्तम वकृत्तफचत् फिलमों को सममाफनत भरी फकया जाएगा।

इस बार के मुंबई अतंरराष्ट्रीय फिलमोतसव 2020 के कुछ खास आकषयाणों में से एक ‘ड्ोन फसनेमेटोग्रािी वकया शॉप’ होगरी जो अपने आप में एक खासरी फदलचसपरी का फवषय है। इस काययाशाला का सचंालन लेफ्टनेंट कमांडर(ररटायडया) जॉन फलफवगंसटोन, इंफडयन इंफसटट्यूट ऑफ़ ड्ोन, चेन्नई के द्ारा फकया जाएगा। इसके साथि हरी ‘फिलम सपंादन काययाशाला’ का भरी आयोजन होगा फजसको रिफसद फिलमकार श्री भरीम फसहं लेफनन सचंाफलत करेंगे। ‘फडजाइफनंग एनरीमेशन फिलमस’ के अतंगयात मासटरकलासेस में बलुगाररया के फफ़लमकार पेंचचो कंुचेव एनरीमेशन फिलम मेफकंग से जडुरी कई बाररीफकयों पर अपने फवचार रखेंगे। इसके अफतररक्त सक्रीन राइफटंग, सटोररी

टेफलंग जैसरी कई फवधाओ ं पर फसनेमा जगत के नामचरीन लोगों के अनभुव और जानकाररी को जानने का मौका फमलेगा।

16वें मुंबई अतंरराष्ट्रीय फिलमोतसव 2020 ससंकरण में लगभग 729 राष्ट्रीय और 24 अन्य दशेों की 144 अतंरायाष्ट्रीय फिलमों की

रिफवफष्टयां सफममफलत की गई हैं। फजनमें यूरोफपयन दशेों, फफ़नलैंड, और रफशया से आयरी एनरीमेशन फिलमें आकषयाण का रिमखु कें द् होंगरी। फमफ़ 2020 के आयोजन के मौके पर फिलम रिभाग ने इस बार फसनेमा से जडुरी मूफतयाकला और िोटो रिदशयानरी का भरी आयोजन फकया है जो भारतरीय फसनेमा के इफतहास को पनुजजीफवत करने का माधयम है। फिलम रिभाग में फसथित ‘इंफडयन मयूफजयम ऑफ़ इंफडयन फसनेमा’ भरी दशयाकों के फलए फबना फकसरी अफतररक्त शलुक के खलुा रहेगा। साथि हरी गूगल टेकनोलॉजरी इतयाफद के फवफभन्न सटॉल भरी फसनेमा रेिफमयों को अपनरी ओर खींचने की कोफशश करेंगे।

Three films were screened at the inaugural ceremony

of the 16th Mumbai International Film Festival, MIFF 2020, yesterday, 28th January 2020, at the Nehru Centre, Worli, Mumbai. Since the festival screens documentaries, short fiction films and animation films, it was quite apt that one representative film from each genre was showcased last evening. Regular screenings begin today.

Bora’s 53-minute documentary, Old Man River, was shown at MIFF 2018 and his Karbi tribal language film Wosobipo (1991) was screened at the Berlin Film Festival. Itwon the Indira Gandhi Award for the Best First Film of a Director, at the National Film Awards.

In the Mishing or Mising community, also called Miri, the second largest tribal community of Assam, the cultural heritage of textile is a living tradition. It is the women-folk who do almost all the work in this labor intensive craft. But this age-long tradition is under serious threat as a result of the market economy’s changing demands.

RHyME AND RHyTHM OF LOOM

Driven by a passion for skateboarding, Jeremy Comte directed his first short documentary, Feel the Hill, at eighteen years. Graduating from Concordia University in Film Production, his connection with nature and curiosity for the human condition deepened with his travels around the globe. He made Paths in 2014. Fauve played at 187 festivals, won 90+ awards, including the Special Jury

Prize at Sundance, 2018. It also earned an Academy Award® nomination for Best Live Action Short Film. Felix Grenier and Alexandre Perreault played the leads.

Set in a surface mine, two boys sinking into a seemingly innocent power game, with Mother Nature as the sole observer. It was inspired by a recurring nightmare.

Russian animator Konstantin Bronzit was nominated for an Academy Award in 2009 with his simple, hand-drawn short, Lavatory Love-story. But in 2004, he had already created the truly brilliant computer animation, The God. Born in 1965 in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Konstantin Bronzit worked first as a caricaturist. After graduating in courses for scriptwriters and directors, in Moscow, in 1994, he has directed some ten short animated films. His works have brought him two Oscar and one Ceasar nominations, and about 200 festival awards, worldwide. Besides independent projects, he has made numerous commercials and a feature film, Alyosha Popovich and Tugarin the Serpent, which was acclaimed

by the audience and was also financially successful. Since 1997, he has been working as an art director at Melnitsa Animation Studio, in St. Petersburg.We Can’t Live Without Cosmos was nominated for an Oscar.

Two unnamed cosmonauts prepare for a space mission. They’re best friends, one with a rectangular head and the other with a square one. Two friends, who dream about space, undergo intense, daily work-outs,and are doing everything possible to make their dream a reality. But this story is not only about friendship and dreams.DAccording to director Konstantin Bronzit, the film is about loneliness.
