ORDAINED 2016
NOVITIATE: A man enters the Society of Jesus as a novice. Novices spend two years living the life of the vows in community, learning the traditions of the Society, making the 30-day Spiritual Exercises retreat, and engaging in ministries that include service to the poor.
FIRST STUDIES: After the novitiate, Jesuits move on to a three-year period of graduate coursework in philosophy and theology called first studies.
REGENCY: Upon completing first studies, Jesuits move to regency, in which the Jesuit works full-time for two or three years in a Jesuit apostolate and lives in an apostolic community.
BROTHERS IN FORMATION: Brothers undergo a slightly different yet equally rigorous formation than that of their scholastic counterparts.
THEOLOGY: Following regency, Jesuit scholastics begin an intensive three-year study of theology.
ORDINATION: After theology, those Jesuits who are called to the priesthood are ordained.
SPECIAL STUDIES: As part of his ongoing formation, a Jesuit may pursue advanced studies in a particular academic or professional field.
TERTIANSHIP: A Jesuit completes his formation of prayer, guidance, and studies with tertianship, a period of preparation for final vows in the Society of Jesus.

The Cost
Please support a Jesuit in formation.Responding to God’s CallOne of the best parts of my role as the
Midwest Jesuits’ provincial assistant for
formation is that I have an opportunity to
walk with Jesuits in a number of stages
throughout their formation. Whether I
am meeting a new novice, a young man
immersed in philosophy classes during
first studies, a Brother who serves as
a counselor to students, or a deacon
preparing for ordination to the priesthood,
I am continually inspired by the many
ways these extraordinary Jesuits illustrate a strong future for the Society’s work
in the world.
Please join the Society in praying for and supporting these men, who have
enthusiastically said, “Yes” to God’s call, seeking the greater glory of God
in every step of their formation and ministry. Each of them, in his own way,
embodies the magis and Pope Francis’ invitation to cooperate “with God in the
service of the Kingdom of mercy and truth, of justice and peace.”
As St. Ignatius said, “all that [we] have and possess are ‘gifts from God.’” We
are deeply grateful for your prayers and gifts to the Society of Jesus. Please be
assured of our prayers for you.
