Some journeys last for a particularseason of your life while others last an entirelifetime For me understanding and learningmore about the horse is the journey I know Iwas meant to take in this life and sharing itwith others is an enormous satisfaction

There is no class on ldquohorsemanshippsychologyrdquo no weekend clinic no book ortelevision program that can teach you whattime spent with the horse himself can teachyou The horse can be the most effectiveteacherhellipif we are only willing to open oureyes be humble and drop preconceivedideas

I was born in Florida but my familymoved to an island off the coast of Australiawhen I was just a young child I was fortunateto spend many hours in the saddle every dayand I made it my goal to learn everything Icould about my four-legged partners I couldnrsquotget enough of those amazing animals and themore time I spent with them the more Iwanted to learn

Even when I wasnrsquot riding I stillwanted to be around horses Watching how

they interacted and communi-cated with each other taughtme volumes and once I beganapplying those lessons in body

language I found I could moreclearly communicate with horses in

ways they understoodHorses donrsquot use equipment to

communicate with each other They innatelyunderstand body language posture pressureeye contact and personal space Thatrsquos whyI use all of these to communicate with myhorses

Studying the horse over the yearshas given me the keys of horsemanshippsychology that lead to success Letrsquos look atsome of these keys

Relief of pressure is critical to suc-cessful training Pressure can come from yourleg hand rein or spur It can also be pressurefrom your presence through your body lan-guage and expression even when you arenrsquottouching him The secret is knowing when togive that relief so the horse learns in a positiveway Once the horse knows that relief of pres-sure comes from you he will always look toyou for relief

For example if you put leg pressureon your horse to move you should releasethat pressure the moment he moves in thedirection you are asking Too many peopleconstantly pressure their horses without givingrelief when the horse responds correctly Thisleads to a lot of frustrated ridershellipand horses

You need to give something back to thehorse when he gives to you This respects hisdignity and rewards the effort he has madeAlways remember that relief of pressure is thegreatest gift you can give your horse In hismind this is better than praise petting ortreats

Soaking is a term yoursquoll hear meuse often This refers to the brief period of restyou offer the horse when hersquos done something

right When you ask him for something and heaccomplishes the task with softness and givethen let him stand and rest a minute or twoDonrsquot be in his mouth or putting any pressureon him whatsoever for that short period ofsoaking time

For example when I get throughroping a steer and my horse has given me therun Irsquom looking for I will just sit there and lethim soak instead of chasing the steer back tothe striping chute He might soak for tensecond or a few minutes depending on whereI am but I want him to have time to relax andabsorb the success hersquos just had

Whether Irsquom heading or heeling Iwant my horses to know they can stand andsoak in the arena Too many times ropehorses arenrsquot allowed to relax in the arenaWhen you always run a steer back to thechute the horse will often get chargey andoverly anxious because hersquos never given timeto relax

The idea is to reward correctresponse and especially softness When yourhorse is soft hersquoll soak up the lesson becausea horsersquos mind is like a sponge When itrsquos softand pliable it can soak up a lot When itrsquos hardand resistant it canrsquot absorb much

Repetition is essential if you wantto teach your horse properly and repeating insmall steps is the most effective way to buildconfidence and understanding in the horseOnce the horse understands he can begin towork on the same team as his rider When yourepeat a step the horse soon adds this to thelist of things he knows After this happens youhave built a step you can build on further

Consistency is a great reassur-ance to the horse When he knows what isexpected of him hersquoll be able to relax and starttrusting you If you use conflicting cues or havedifferent rules for your horse in the stall versusthe pasture hersquoll be confused and unsureKnow that every time you handle your horse ndashwhether yoursquore on the ground or in the saddlendash you are communicating with him Make it apoint to be consistent in what yoursquore tellinghim

Preparation is essential to goodhorsemanship and this means preparing yourhorse step-by-step to do what yoursquore asking ofhim You wouldnrsquot expect a first grader tounderstand algebra It works the same withhorses Prepare your horse so he knows whatyoursquore asking

When I refer to ldquopreparing myhorserdquo I am not talking about ldquodesensitizingrdquo Imean preparing him in small steps so heunderstands what you expect of him You canover-do it with ldquodesensitizationrdquo and end upwith a dull horse If yoursquove prepared your horseproperly he wonrsquot blow up and overreact

Create a job for your horse whenyou ride You might be moving cows or just rid-ing to the mailbox but Irsquove found horses will tryharder if they see the purpose in what yoursquoreasking them to do Every time I work with a

horse I set things up using techniques andapplications so he can please me I look forhim to make that effort When you have ahorse that puts his heart and soul into trying toplease you thatrsquos when you know you have areal partner

Keep it interesting Mix up yourroutine and do something different with yourhorse New experiences engage a horsersquosmind and build confidence If you focus toomuch on a single thing day after day yourhorse may learn to resent it Your horse canget sour from too much ground workhellipand itrsquosnot much fun for you either

I recommend having a plan of whatyou want to accomplish every time you workwith your horse This will help you continuelearning and help avoid wasted time as wellas boredom

Patience goes a long way with thehorse and yoursquoll need patience if you intend tosuccess as a horseman At the same timepatience isnrsquot any good without knowledgeYou can have all the patience in the world butwithout a plan yoursquore not going to get farKnowledge and understanding will actuallygive you patience

There are no shortcuts to goodhorsemanship You canrsquot skip steps You canlearn a tremendous amount of theory andgreat ideas but they require time and practiceto perfect and that means you need to bepatient Over the years Irsquove seen that whensomeonersquos patience runs out this usuallymeans theyrsquove come to the end of theirknowledge Self-doubt and fear are also basedon lack of understanding or information Everydedicated horseman needs what I call aldquoreservoir of patiencerdquo to tap into as you workto improve your horsemanship If you have aprogram you know will work you can afford tobe patient Up Close with Chris Cox

Letting your horse soak for a brief time afterhe does something right is essential the learning

In this article I will explain how the rideruses her seat one of the riderrsquos most impor-tant yet often overlooked aids I will explain thisby using the examples of upward and down-ward transitions As the rider puts weight in thesaddle the rotation and movement of her hipsgives the horse the indication to go forwardWhen this rotation and movement decreasesit signals the horse to slow or to stop The bestway to show how this works is by using simpleexercises that you can do at home to improvecommunication using your seat

Walk-JogTrot Transitions Using the SeatThe goal of this exercise is to use your seat

rather than hand or leg aids to signal requestsfor upward and downward transitions from

walk to trot Start by asking your horse to walkforward on a large circle Gently follow hismovement with your hips Prepare for anupward transition to the jogtrot using your seatas the main tool for communicating to thehorse Do this by first putting more weight inyour seat As you do rotate your hips to followthe horsersquos movement and to encourage himto increase his speed through the action ofyour seat Support this action by lightly apply-ing leg aids (if needed) and slightly releasingthe reins to encourage his forward movementIf needed reinforce your requests with aldquocluckrdquo He should pick up the jogtrotContinue following his motion with your seat

Jogtrot a segment of the large circle andthen turn him to make a smaller circle within

the large one We will use the smaller circle toask him for a downward transition back to thewalk Jogtrot a portion of the small circle andprepare for a downward transition using theseat Once again put weight in your seat butthis time decrease the movement and rotationof your hips with the horsersquos movement Heshould make a transition from jogtrot to thewalk in response to your seat aid Praise him ifhe does Do this exercise in both directions Asyour practice this exercise your seat aid willbecome more effective and your horse moreresponsive You will notice that less leg andvoice aids are necessary to achieve the transi-tions

JogTrot to LopeCanter Transition Usingthe Seat

When the horse is comfortable and under-stands the aids communication you are givinghim for the walk to jogtrot transition it is timeto try transitions from the jogtrot to thelopecanter This exercise should be done in alarge fenced paddock or pasture Be sure thehorse is warmed up before starting this exer-cise Repeat the walk to jogtrot transitionexercise to reinforce the effectiveness of yourseat leg and hand aids

Start by trotting the horse on a large circleThe rider should post to the trot even if using awestern saddle Encourage the horse todepart into the canter by using the word com-mand ldquocanterrdquo (The horse already shouldhave learned this voice command from groundtraining on the longe line or round pen or liber-ty work) At the same time you give the voicecommand use your seat and leg aids toencourage him to move forward into the can-ter Keep a loose contact on the reins lightlypositioning him on the arc of the circleContinue following his motion with your seatwhile posting as he increases his speed andmakes a transition to the lopecanter At thispoint it is important that he canters but notimportant which lead that he takes When hebegins lopingcantering sit and follow therocking motion of the gait with your seat andhips to encourage him to continue cantering

When a horse has a problem picking up thecorrect lead the most common cause is thatthe rider is not maintaining the proper form andbalance The rider is not properly controllinghisher body position during the jogtrot tolopecanter transitions To achieve this proper

ldquoCommunicating with Your Aids mdash Keys to Success Part 7 The Seatrdquo

control it requires an understanding of theriderrsquos turning aids So before we can go intomore detail about perfecting transitions weneed to understand the importance of theriderrsquos turning aids and how they are used toposition the horse

The Turning AidsTurning or ldquobendingrdquo aids include our hands

through the reins and our legs We use theseaids to control the horsersquos direction of traveland his body position The term ldquobendingrdquo maybe unfamiliar to some riders When the bendthrough the horsersquos side is correct his bodyconforms to the arc of whatever curved line heis on If a horse is bent properly on a circle wesay he is ldquostraightrdquo because he is properly fol-lowing the arc of the circle His hind feet followin the tracks of the forelegs on a curve To beable to do this he must bend

The primary aids to turn or bend a horse arethe riderrsquos outside leg and outside rein Theoutside is the side of the horse opposite fromthe direction of the turn For example if I wantto turn my horse in a circle to the left I turn himusing my outside aidsmdashthe right leg and rightrein The job of my inside (left) leg is to keepthe horse forward and out on the turn Myinside (left) rein is used to lightly position myhorsersquos head so that he is looking in the direc-tion of the turn Let us look at the function ofeach aid in turning or bending a horse

The outside rein functions as the turningrein It asks the horse to move his shoulders tofollow the arc of the circle or turn When usingthe outside rein be careful not to move theoutside hand over the crest of the horsersquosneck

The outside leg is positioned slightly behindthe girth It helps to bend the horsersquos bodyaround the inside leg and keeps his hindquar-ters from swinging out and off the arc of the cir-cle or turn

The inside rein lightly positions the horsersquoshead in the direction of the turn Do this byslightly rotating the inside hand as if turning akey or opening a doorknob and slightly open-ing the rein in the direction of the turn to posi-tion the head

The inside leg is positioned at the girth Ithelps keep the forward momentum Also asmy friend and Olympic rider Jane Savoiedescribes in her wonderful book CROSSTRAIN YOUR HORSE ldquothe inside leg serves

as a pole for the horse to bend aroundrdquoIn the next article I will give you some

Horseman Versus TrainerA great horseman is a fair and

patient communicator Herersquos an interestinganalogy when it comes to training horses Sayyou measure knowledge in terms of electricvolts One trainer has 100 volts and anotherhas only 75 But the trainer with 100 volts cancommunicate only 40 volts to the horse Andthe trainer who has 75 volts can pass alongall 75 to the horse Which trainer do you wantriding your horse Irsquod rather have the trainerwith 75

Therersquos a difference between agreat horseman and a great horse trainer Irsquoveknown a lot of horse trainers even championswhom I donrsquot respect Horses are just things to

them just objects something they use on theirway to glory The championships are alwaysabout them not their horses

To me a big part of horsemanshipand horse training is trust and itrsquos a two-waystreet Itrsquos a trust I must have of my horse andhe of me In the dictionary trust is described asfaith hope and a reliance on another It alsomentions confidence and doing things withoutfear or misgivings These are all qualities I tryto develop in my horses

To trust is to believe in somethingAs horse people itrsquos easy for us to destroy thetrust or belief our horses have in us If you trainthrough pain or fear you destroy the trust thehorse has in you Trust like confidence can be

gained and lost You canrsquot make something orsomebody trust or believe in you you can onlygain this trust or respect by the way you workwith or train your horse

Enough is Enough

How do you know when yoursquovetrained or ridden enough for a day

Recognize when your horse is try-ing Even though you might not have gotten tothe point you had in mind that day if yourhorse is trying maybe thatrsquos enough for thatday Donrsquot push it to where things become badYou always want to end on a good note

One thing I see people do even atmy camps and clinics is after they learn newtraining techniques they make the mistake ofnever stopping their training Irsquoll yell out tothem ldquoWhen are you going to stop training onthat horserdquo They look at me and say ldquoWhatrdquo

There has to be resting spots forhorses Resting spots are extremely importantto the horse especially when yoursquore doingthings that are mentally and physically taxingto him Learn to find a stopping spot Drop yourreins turn loose of the horse and let him relaxand catch his breath This is part of givingsomething back to the horse Rest reliefrelease relaxation reward a pat on the neckLet him rest a minute or two

Yoursquove also got to take into consid-eration a lot of different things How long haveyou been riding the horse What is his dispo-sition How hot is it outside When you addthe humidity and temperature together andthey total 180 be careful Then enough can beenough real quickly The horse can becomeoverheated and not be able to cool himselfdown He could even die If you get a horse toohot and too tired he canrsquot learn or think any-more And if you push the horse will becomeangry You canrsquot train an angry horse An angryhorse canrsquot learn

Be a great teacher to your horse Todo so you need to be a great student of horse-manship Teaching is the art of communica-tion Work on the little plateaus the littlechanges the little tries Reward them and buildupon them Those are your building blocks

Goal-SettingSet goals for yourself in horseman-

ship because thatrsquos the only way yoursquoll know ifyour relationship with your horse is workingBut come up with small ones - theyrsquore morebelievable and therefore achievable

Work on reaching small plateausnot climbing insurmountable mountains I thinka mistake that many of us make is that we askway too much way too fast of ourselves andof our horses We need to slow down Take ourtime Donrsquot get in a hurry with horses

crossing in the first installment of our three partseries on solutions to common trail riding prob-lems Wersquoll now move on to the horse thatldquojigsrdquo all the way home as soon as we turn inthat direction Why do you suppose hersquos soanxious to get back Letrsquos analyze the situa-tion Out on the trail yourhorse has to carry you thesaddle and other trail itemsHe must listen to yourrequests and walk trot andcanter when and where youwant as long as you wantHe must calmly deal withditches bicycles joggersdeer bear hunters etc Butnow yoursquove turned towardhome and thoughts of whathappen there include beingdismounted untacked per-haps a good roll a nice bathmaybe some treats and then grazing with hispaddock mates Yoursquod probably try to get backjust as quickly too if faced with these choices

If you want to break this cycle yoursquollneed to change part of the equation Everyonce in awhile dismount out on the trail and letyour horse enjoy some down time The whenhe picks up speed on the way home if you feel

safedonrsquot fightit let him go Infact you may even encourage him to gofaster When you arrive at the barn headstraight for the arena and work for at least anhour or so Refine that trot execute clean

canter departures in a specific lead develop amore balance stop a lighter back up more col-lection improve your lateral work etc Dosome really good training while you work onthis other problem and yoursquoll not only cure hisdesire to rush home but yoursquoll have a moreresponsive horse as well Three or four ses-

sions should have himwondering if he reallywants to come back atall In this way by chang-ing his associations ofwhat goes on when outon the trail (fun) andwhat happens back athome (hard work whenhe rushes)yoursquove madehis idea become thesame as your idea Itrsquos

all about working smarternot harderThe same principal works

on the barn sour horsethat wonrsquot leave the property Just work himright there But get him moving teaching allthose skills you want to teach As you are trot-ting figure eights start drifting away from thebarn on one half of the figure and then backtoward the barn on the other half Keep enlarg-ing the figure eight so that yoursquore gradually get-

ting farther away You might even lethim stop and rest away from thebarn but work harder and faster nearthe barn This same approach could

be used with one horse remainingin the paddock while you work theother

Finally herersquos a coopera-tive exercise for horses that willonly go out with their buddy

alongside Get you horsersquos buddyrsquosrider to help out Tack up and mount

both horses riding side by side in thearena or another safe area with plenty of

room Once the horses are walking togethereach rider should turn and circle away from theother one to the left and one to the right Keepthe size of the circles about ten feet and thenmeet up and go straight side by side for a fewstrides What yoursquore doing here is resolvingseparation anxiety by practicing leaving andcoming back together Continue the exercisein ever-increasing circles showing the horsesthat while they are in fact separating it is notforever Repeat at the trot and then the canter

The next step is to have one horseremain standing still while the other walks for-

ward about ten or fifteen feet away Halt thathorse and then let the other walkup to himThe key here is to walk calmly Once this iseasy have the other horse trot off while yourhorse stands and then ask him to walk up tohis buddy Then try it at the canter Be sure thatyour horse can do this calmly at each gaitbefore you ask him to tolerate being left by hisbuddy out on the trail where it is far more chal-lenging As always good preparation helpsyour horse succeed and avoids testing him tofailure

People often email me with their horse situa-tions I find that one personrsquos horse problemmay not be considered a problem by anotherWhat makes us view whether our horsersquosresponse is acceptable depends if we feelldquosafe and in controlrdquo ldquofearful and out of con-trolrdquo or ldquogetting along but annoyed In a nut-shellhellipit depends upon our personal experi-ence and horse-ability

Here are 3 ldquosimilarrdquo scenarios They are thesame but viewed differently by the writers

When I take my horse Blackrsquos bridle off hesometimes ldquohelpsrdquo me by twisting his head outof it as soon as I reach for the headstall Anysuggestions as to why he does this and how toget him to stop He is not mean about it morelike he is impatient and wants me to get it offfaster I have also noticed that some of theother horses in the barn do it too the stallioneven does it when you are taking his halter off Ali and Black

ldquoSurerdquo helps me by twisting his head out of thebridle as soon as I have the bridle or halterundone and my hands are up to take it off Healso helps put the bridle on by lowering hishead so I can reach to get it over his ears andopens his mouth for the bit I think he is beinga gentleman and trying to help outAllan and Sure

My horse Darkhorse unbridles herself I lookat it like shersquos helping too I take it off in stageswaiting until shersquos still before I proceed Thatgets me through most of it with her headstill My problem is that I have no clue how to make her be still in that last moment whenit comes off She does the same thing with thehalter I put the rope around her neck withthe halter When I take the last part of therope off her neck she still always has to ldquohelprdquoLuckily she doesnrsquot head for the hills assoon as the halter comes off She is alsohelpful putting halter and bridle onPauli and Darkhorse

Personally the only help I want from my horsewhile bridling is to do what I ask I want ALLmy horses to stand relaxed with their headsdown to quietly accept me raising or loweringthe bit from their mouth or the halter to theirnose To achieve these results my responsibil-ity to my horse is to know how to properly holdand correctly bridle and halter a horse This is

just basic horsemanship Sure I remembergoing to horse camp when I was 8 yearsoldhellipI was assigned an Appaloosa thatknew how to raise and avoid my punyheight What did not help was my unaware-ness that I could and should ask him to drophis head I also had a responsibility tothe horse to hold the bridle correctly Theway I was bridling was not helping the situ-ation but rather making it worse Itrsquos ashame we did not learn how to perform this

basic but important ritual Boy was my 8 yearold horsemanship bad

As the writers stated above their horses ldquotwistand pullrdquo their heads out of their bridles andhalters All are anticipating what is comingnext Essentially they are saying to their own-ershelliprsquohurry up and get the job donerdquo They are

being rude and disrespectful

How do we get our horses to be a little morepatient and wait for us

Step 1 Realize that we have to be consistent

We canrsquot expect our horse to wait for us atone particular moment and then allow himto take control at others How is he to knowthe difference when we want his help andwhen we donrsquot We have to be consistentwhen we are haltering as well as bridling This

means how to properly handle the bridle thehorsersquos head and why we do it is so important

Step 2 I always ask the horse to give his headdownward with a tiny pound of pressure In thebeginning he may raise it uphellipI just go up withhim not applying any extra pressure Whenhe begins to yield in the downward directionhellipIrelease immediately When he is lowering hisheadhellipI move on to the next step

Step 3 I ask the horse to yield his head to theside At this point he does not have to do it atthe same time that he lowers his head But I

want him to gradually give his head further tothe side

Step 4 This is when I ask him to lower his

head and give it to the side By doing this hewill most likely do one and then the other untilhe figures out that I am asking him to do bothtogether and that he can do them both togeth-er As he gets better his head will drop further

Step 5 Head hugs In this part of the lessonthe horse learns to drop his head further andgive it further to the side I feel the horseshead loosely wrap around me as opposed tostraining to pull away from me

Step 6 Horse holds head hug longer andlonger This is the part where the horse learnsto hold his head longer and longer in the downand relaxed position The key to getting him to

learn not to take it away is to wait until you feelhim relax and lighten up your hands onhimhellipbut ready to immediately re-ask if hestiffens or begins to raise and straighten hishead out

To add this to haltering and bridling andunhaltering and unbridling When done cor-rectly each and every time your horse will notonly be a pleasure to halter and bridle but hewill learn to stand quietly without beingrestrained by equipment when you catchrelease and untack him

Make the most of these short days and coldnights Training a horse requires consistency

and repetitionhelliplots and lots of both- so donrsquotget discouraged

sport of distance riding specifically competi-tive trail riding

Several years ago I owned a 3 yrold quarter horse that needed training I justwanted a horse I could trail ride After askingaround I got a couple phone numbers madea some calls and ultimately ended up meetingDarlene Molitor of Richmond Minnesota Sheowned a trainingboarding facility worked withtrail horses and sounded like someone I couldtrust to teach my horse what I wanted him toknow

Koda spent 2 months in traininganother month riding amp me taking lessons andthe next several years being boarded at ValleyCreek FarmhellipI had met and made friendswith several women also boarding horses atthe farm We spent many hours riding ourhorses together hauling them to many of theMinnesota State Parks Minnesota StateForests Custer State Park in South Dakotaand embarking on many adventures full of funamp excitement We seemed to like the samekind of trail riding we discovered many newareas during our ldquoToole stompingrdquo (findingsome deer trail amp seeing where it ended up

sometimes through very thick brush moretimes than not we had a blast)

Somewhere along the line thesubject of endurance and competitive trailriding came up sounded like another greatreason to ride so I decided I would check itout I started hanging around horse camp onthe competition weekends riding Koda on themarked trails wishing I too could try it Kodaamp I did a novice ride (they usually varybetween 10 amp 12 miles) and I have to admit Iwas hooked

Because Koda was a quarter horse(they are sometimes too heavily muscled to doreally well in competitive riding ndash especially onhot humid days) I found myself looking for anArabian Thatrsquos when Sassie came into mylife I started competing on her in 2000 whenshe was 4 years old trying to learn all I could

about this sport and here it is 2009 andrealizing I still learn something every time Icompete

Competitive trail riding is a distanceriding event ridden within a set time period atspeeds of 5 to 7 miles per hour Horses arescored by veterinarians on such factors aspulse respiration soundness fatigue andattitude Endurance rides are typically 50 to100 miles in length and Limited DistanceEndurance rides are 25 to 35 miles

Competitive trail riding appeals tome because itrsquos trail riding lsquowith a twistrsquo Yourhorse goes through a vet check prior to ridingchecking for soundness pulse respirationwounds etc Ride management alwaysconducts a riderrsquos meeting handing out mapspointing out where there is water bridges rivercrossings or anything else that might need tobe noted A ride time of 4 to 4 hours for 25miles is established based on temperaturehumidity and conditions of the trail Plates areposted at points in the trail where a turn mightneed to be made ribbons are hung in the treesamp bushes so we know what trail to follow a twomile marker is posted and a designatedamount of ride time with a 40 min hold in themiddle is announced It is up to us to figureout how to ride the designated trails and getback to camp at the finish at the right timeHow exciting

Scoring is based on the condition ofthe horse during and at the end of the rideWhen completing the first loop the rider isgiven a card with the lsquoin timersquo written on it Wethen have 10 min to water feed and brushour horse before their pulse amp respiration aretaken After standing quietly for pulse andrespiration (PampRs) we then do a trot outchecking for lameness If your horse isdeemed lsquofit to continuersquo the vet will give the okto finish the ride At this time both the horse amprider get a 30 min break giving us time to eat

something get a drink or just answer the callof nature Upon leaving camp to finish theride we turn in our card waiting for theannouncement from the timer that we canleave Once again we are on our wayfollowing ribbons and plates socializing with

our fellow riders and just plain enjoying theday

When wersquove once again completedthe designated miles we end up in camp onceagain receiving a card taking the time to feedwater and brush our horse going through thePampRrsquos the trot out and a final exam from thevet Scoring is based on a starting score of400 points with points deducted for highPampRrsquos the trot out fatigue lameness musclepain manners lesions the use of boots and apossible time penalty for completing the traileither too fast or too slow We have a 10 minwindow to finish with 5 min on either side ofthe finish time before the time penalty wouldstart to be a factor

We never know how wersquovemanaged to finish up until the awards and potluck supper later that night The winners areannounced with ribbons given through 6thplace and a completion prize for all whofinished With our bellies full the winnershaving been announced we all wander off forthe night either enjoying the conversationaround a neighborrsquos campfire shooting the

breeze by someonersquos trailer or just seekingout the quiet after a long day only to drift off tosleep thinking of all the things needed to bedone to ride again tomorrow

Reflecting on these weekends arewhat help me get through the long coldMidwestern winter days dreaming of the warmsun shining down the breeze blowing throughthe trees as we ride all the wildlife we happen

upon while riding and waiting for two of myfavorite words Trailrsquos Open

First your horse must be at least4 years old to compete in a competitive ridethat is 30 miles or less Your horse may havesome type of physical conditioning butusually not at the speed that is required forcompetitive trail

To begin find an area trail orroadside and mark off a distance of onemile Warm your horse up then try and trot orgait ndash a good working trotgait ndash not a jog trotndash for that entire mile If you donrsquot make itthatrsquos okay try again another day If you havea three gaited horse you will be posting thetrot

When this seems easy for you andyour horse mark off a 3 mile trail Warm yourhorse up then try and trot the three miles andtry and complete it in a half hour Yoursquoll likelybe walking some of this distance thatrsquos okaybut work toward a goal of 3 miles in a halfhour Once you have this accomplishedseveral times mark out 6 miles Make thewarm up and cool down of your horse part ofyour six mile ride but try and get the wholething done in an hour Please note every timeyou move up a step yoursquoll likely not make yourgoal for the first few tries Once your speedand time become easier move up to the nextstep

When you can complete the 6 mileride in an hour consistently try to complete a12 mile ride in two hours This may be one ofyour more difficult steps Just remember youand your horse are getting in shape together

And when you are able to do this consistently-12 miles in 2 hours - plan to enter a noviceride at a distance ride or clinic near you Go towwwumecracom and click on scheduleThere are also rules and other important stufflisted there Wisconsin Minnesota andMichigan have affiliated distance clubs andthere are UMECRA (Upper MidwestEndurance and Competitive Rides) also inIllinois and one in Indiana You are welcometo come check out a ride before you actuallyenter OR call the ride manager ahead of timeand offer your services as a volunteer Yoursquolllearn a lot before you even hit the trail

It will likely take you 6 ndash 8 weeksfrom the beginning of this program to your firstnovice ride Some breeds take longer tocondition 10 ndash 12 weeks This of course alsodepends on the previous condition of you andyour horse

One of the biggest misconceptionsabout distance riding is you need to ride everyday This is actually over conditioningConditioning 2 times a week is good with 3times being idea Usually two six miles rides aweek plus a 12 to 15 mile ride OR a 6 mileride a dressage lesson and a 12 ndash 15 milesduring a week is a good goal for regularlycompeting in rides Remember to give yourhorse a few days off their first ldquobigrdquo ride as restis important to healing aching muscles

Beginning Your ConditioningProgram for Competitive

Trail Riding

I get asked the question oftenWhat size of arena do you prefer to train inMy answer The bigger the better

In the north country that can betough because of the winter months We areconfined to in-door arenas and some of themcan be small Small is better than nothing butas soon as I can I am in a bigger out doorarena or out side There are several problemsthat can arise from using a small pen Horseswill tend to get chargey and pushy in a smallpen especially in reining maneuvers or fencework training In our rundowns to stop they willeither get chargey or short out not wanting to

free up and move out Our horses are thinkingitrsquos such a short distance the wall is rightthere if I fly down there Irsquoll get to stop or theythink the wall is so close Irsquom not going to runso they move bound up with the stop on theirmind

Lead changes are a big thing thatcan be tough in a small pen When we ask fora lead change our horses can get pushy andchargy because they know if they resist us awall will come soon and they will have to turnoften times allowing them to get out ofchanging for us Horses have to be loping freerelaxed and not pushing or leaning in order tochange leadslope circles rundowns or stopeffectively and smoothly When they are in asmall pen it is just natural they are going tolean on the walls The solutionhellipwide openspaces

As soon as I can I get my horse outinto the open spaces such as a pasture ora bean field where I have a lot of room to freeup my horse and take the pushiness outof them Irsquoll start off by loping circles then putmy hand down or turn loose of the reinsand see where my horse will take me Just lethim go If my horse drifts to the right I willpick up and pull him to the left If he driftsor leans to the left I will pull him to the rightWhichever way he pushes or leans I willpull him the opposite way to eventually

take all the push and lean out of them andteach our horse to stay right with us andto wait on us to tell them which way to goI will also use a straight gravel road to helptake the lean and push out of my horseswhen I am working on lead changes

A common problem when workingon lead changes in a small pen is that thehorse will get chargey and lean because theyknow if they get to the wall first itrsquos harderfor you to change them and they have to turnOn a straight gravel road a horse getschargey pushey or speeds up I let himand keep asking him to change After aboutfive miles of that hersquos looking to slow downand back off because they start to realizethat there is no fence to stop at or no endto this pen He also has no way to judge whenI will ask him for a lead change like theycan in the arena to help take away theanticipation which removes the pushiness fromthe lead change

So keep in mind when we aretraining for lead changes circles or rundownsIf our horses get pushy or chargey maybeitrsquos time to get into a big arena or better yetout into the wide open to help get our horsesrelaxed freed up and take out some of theanticipation

Last month we covered teachingyour horse to load in the trailer safely andcalmly Many times trailer loading problemsare caused by a bad experience or injury to the

horse while he is beinghauled and problemssuch as these are oftenthe hardest to fix Thismonth we will talk abouttrailer safety (inspectingand evaluating thecomponents andfeatures of your trailer)and trailering safely(how to make yourhorsersquos experiencewhile going down theroad as safe andrelaxing as possible)

First trailersafety Most trailershave drop downwindows and frequently

there is an option to drop the window butleave a barred barrier I never travel with boththe bars and the window down I donrsquot likemy horse going down the road with his headhanging out of the trailer If you trailer withthe window down and the bars up I like tobuy an aftermarket net that covers the entirewindow Although the chances are slim I donrsquotwant to risk any debris flying in throughthe bars and hitting my horse as we travel

If you donrsquot have an aftermarket net I wouldrecommend traveling with the windows upjust slide the see through part of the windowopen to provide air flow I will drop thewindows in the un-occupied stalls if I donrsquothave a full trailer to increase air flow on a hotday

I like to be sure I have my trailerready before I bring my horse up to it Thedoors should be open and tied or latchedback so they wonrsquot swing shut on me ormy horse Make sure the dividers are openand locked back Check the trailer for anylose tack or equipment that could slide aroundor get in your horsersquos way while he is inthe trailer Now yoursquore ready to go get yourhorse

Before loading your horse put onthe Equiface Saver and halter snugly aswell as any other safety equipment youlike to use Ideally I donrsquot load my horse bystepping in to the trailer in front of himand leading him in A safer and more idealway to load is for your horse to get in aheadof you as you stand outside the trailerdoor Then you follow him in Also I like to justthrow my horsersquos lead rope out throughthe window bars and close the divider thenwalk around to the window and tie him Thiskeeps my horse from hurting himself if hegets scared and pulls back before the divideris closed

When you are hauling horses drivelike you have a full cup of hot coffee on thedash and you are trying not to spill anyAlthough speed is a factor in giving yourhorse a comfortable trip what you reallyneed to be careful of is sudden changesin speed and taking corners too fastEverything about your driving when youare hauling horses should be as smooth and predictable as possible Before I havesomeone drive a trailer with horses for thefirst time I like to take a drive with themriding in the trailer I drive just as I normallywould with horses If you do this on a backroad with your friends it will change yourperception of what your horse is dealingwith back there

Personally I prefer a slant load overa straight load trailer In a slant load yourhorse bumps in to the dividers with his sideswhen he comes off balance in a turn startor stop In a straight load I think he is morelikely to hit his head as he balances sincehe is being thrown straight forward in a stopUse heavy shavings rather than sawdustwhen you are bedding your trailer Fine saw-dust gets blowing around in the wind andgets in your horsersquos eyes nose and lungsI never use food as a bribe to get my horsein the trailer but I do like him to have hayand water available at all times when weare traveling If you fill a water bucket only23 full you wonrsquot have much spill out andyour horse will likely drink quite a bit on theroad if it is available to him

When you are considering buyinga trailer look closely at both the insideand outside Check for any sharp edges in thehorse area As you consider ask yourselfldquowhat can I see that could cause a wreckrdquoWhen you are hauling drive as smoothlyas you can Stay safe with your horses anduntil next time may God bless the trailsyou ride

The competition at the WisconsinHorse Fair was tough but I have to say that Iwas with some really good people Really topquality horse trainers and everyone was willingto help everyone even though the competitivespirit was there it wasnrsquot a hinderance orobsacle to camaraderie It was a very goodgroup of people who participated in the event

There was a total of 33 horses andthe top 30 were very well done The wholeexperience was phenomenal I ended upthirteenth which was disappointing for me butwas not due to the horse It was due to theidiot on her back Making wrong turns costsyou points but Kickstart performed nicely justas I knew she would so it was rider error nothorse problems or anything she did

Kickstart got as high of a score asyou could on body condition When I train ahorse I train the whole horse so with 3 monthsof hard work her body condition really showedoff all the hard work she had put into thetraining In the in-hand trail course we had alittle problem because of my bad knee so welost some points there but she did everythingshe was supposed to do

In the riding course she picked up

good did herlead changesvery smoothlydid her turn-

arounds well went over the bridge withouthesitation and side passing through the conesshe did really well In the free style she didlead changes loping moving her hip and hershoulder had a tarp on her tail side passednicely two tracking went well The crowd wasreall pleased with her performance hootingand hollering and clapping which did notbother her at all I had been hauling her aroundthe country to different shows one inMississippi and one in South Dakota and a fewother shows as well so she was used to thecrowds and the noise A few horses had issueswith the noise Some of the trainers were ableto prepare their horses for the noise andcrowds and some were not so a few horseshad issues with the hollering and clapping inthe auditorium

I was not in the top ten so at thatpoint we were done except for selling ourhorses at the auction That had me pretty blueas we had developed a pretty close relation-ship and bonded well To be honest when Iprepared for the sale I did not ride her throughI let her roll in the mud I wanted this horse butshe was not really in my budget They handedme the mike to tell about Kickstart and I said

rdquoShe kicks she bites and she ainrsquot worth adamn donrsquot bid on herrdquo Course I had to say itwith a hint of a smile cause anyone who hadseen the competition and had seen her go newbetter People were laughing and clappingShe laid down and rolled 4 times in theprocess of me trying to down play her abilityShe was very comfortable with me and withthe environment

The bidding started and it wasnrsquotlong before it got out of my ability to buy her Iwas heartbroken and walked outside of thepen when it was done quite disappointed tohave to part with her I was pretty close totears as I had really bonded with this horse Iwas standing there talking to TJ Clibbornwhen one of my clients came up with thepaperwork in hand and gave me the horsesaying ldquoHerersquos her paperwork and herersquos yourhorserdquo What a blessing that was

So now Kickstart is on a 30 daysabbatical and when that is done she will betrained for roping ranch horse versatility andextreme trail my plan being to make her mysignature horse working with her to make hera well rounded horse

Balanced SeatThe key to staying on your horse

(not falling off) is developing a balanced seatand good posture Your safety in the saddle isdirectly related to the balance and security ofyour seat Most falls occur when the rider isout of position and lose their balance Ridingwith shoulder hips and heels in straight align-ment balances the rider Your ankles should bein a relaxed position with the ball of your footresting on the stirrup Heel slightly lower thanthe toe Allow your foot to gently rest on thestirrup donrsquot brace or push off your stirrup ironGripping with your knees or bracing with yourfeet locks your joints and creates tension andbouncing Relax your joints and move yourbody in rhythm with your horseHow do you develop a balanced seat

First check your saddle Do thefenders allow your legs to lie naturally in astraight line down from your hipsAlternatively are they placed too far forwardso your feet are out in front of you If they toofar forward this places the rider in what we calla chair seat Most saddles can be adjusted sothe fender can be slid forward or back Makean adjustment if you need too Also check thatthe seat sits level Barrel saddles for exampleare designed for barrel racing in order to keepthe barrel racer glued in the saddle for those

fast tight turns not trail riding for hours so ithas more of a sloped seat

Second have a friend or an instruc-tor watch you ride and give you suggestionson your posture An even better idea is tovideo tape your riding so you can actually seehow your posture is Often times we think ourlegs are underneath us when actually they arenot We carry our bad posture habits right intoour riding position

Having an instructor or friend lungeyou or send you around the round pen is agreat way to work on posture and balancedriding It takes away our security blanket (thereins) and teaches us to ride in balance withour horse Always have the bridle and reins onthe horse in case he spooks However whenyou are practicing drop the reins on yourhorsersquos neck and ride with your hands on yourhips or out to your side or behind your backFirst find your balance at the halt by leaningforward and backward until you are right in themiddle of your saddle then align your shoul-ders hips and heels in a straight vertical line

When you arecomfortable atthe halt moveon to the walkthen progressto carrying thatgood posture

into the trot and canterIncrease your Knowledge

Everyone who competes withhorses disagrees with a Judge from time totime Some even disagree with the Judges allof the time Disagreeing and complaining is awaste of time and energy If you really want towin direct your energy towards learning how aJudge views and analyzes a class

A ldquoscoredrdquo class is judgeddifferently than a ldquopleasurerdquo or performanceclass Scored classes (horsemanship reiningtrail showmanship longe line etc) allow eachhorse or competitor to be evaluatedindividually The Judge is able to give thecompetitor 100 of his attention The entirepattern or presentation gets evaluated Forexample in reining the Judges keep anaverage performance in mind (score of 70)and the horse eitherearns or loseslsquopointsrsquo whilebeing evaluatedagainst that stan-dard Manyexhibitors feel thatscored classeshave more clearlydefined expecta-tions You canview Judgersquosscore cards andclass specifica-tions at Breedwebsites such asAQHA AHANRHA NSBA etc

Pleasure or per-formance classentries are evalu-ated against oneanother The way youpresent your horse tothe Judge is as impor-tant as the quality ofyour horsersquos performance The Judge is onlyable to evaluate a portion of your performanceand it is your responsibility to make sure yourhorse is perfect every time he is seenPlacings in pleasure classes are reflective ofwhat the Judge has and has not seen

A Time To Celebrate Farriers

Question Dear JulieI recently purchased mysecond horse a twelve-year-old gelding Hehas impeccable ground manners and is apleasure to ride on trails but as soon as youget him in an arena its a disaster He isunmanageable beyond a walk for a period oftime By unmanageable I mean that he leanson my hands so much that I cant slow himdown at all and we end up full gallop at a cav-aletti or around and around the arena I havetried many thing such as sponge hands tocollect him and keep him from leaning on mecircling smaller and smaller pulling back onone rein and pulling his nose to my knee with

no luck Selling him is not an option as Iam rather attached and wouldnt sell himeven if I couldnt ride him Any adviceyou can give me would be greatlyappreciated All of his tack has beenchecked and fits his teeth do not needfloated and he isnt lame I consider myself a competent rider and he is using a

Answer HeidiIt sounds to me like you have a horse that isuntrained He knows what to do out on a trailbecause that is pretty obvious and not toocomplicated There are many excellent trailhorses that do not know what to do in thearena and visa versa He has probably neverbeen asked to collect or circle or stay on therail and he is out of his element Sounds likeyou need to embark on a campaign to train himfor the arena You could take him to a trainerfor 30-60 days or do it yourself

The first thing I would do is put himin a plain snaffle and teach him to give to thebit I like to use an elbow pull which is a linethat goes over the poll through the rings of thebit (on each side) under the legs and attachesto the saddle Work the horse in the round penuntil he learns to give to the bit He will even-tually learn that when he drops his head down

and in the pres-sure on hismouth goesaway Then hehas to learn togive laterally tothe bit whenyou pick up theright rein heshould bend hisneck right andvisa versa Healso has tolearn to stopwith your weightand maintain asteady speedwhen askedand steerIt may seem

odd to thinkabout but a trailhorse doesntreally have toknow thesethings Theyjust follow alongthe trail or fol-low other hors-es at whateverspeed is askedHorses do thisquite naturallyit does notrequire muchtraining On the

other hand going around in circles in thearena makes little or no sense to a horse It isquite possible that whatever work your horsehas had in the arena gave him a bad taste forarena work and he shuts down and becomesresistant when you ride in there because hevies it as a confusing and frightening placeLots of horses work better out of the arenabecause of the training baggage that surfaceswhen they are in the arena Horses are verykeen to associate a place with a memory oremotion

I think you need to start over withthis horse in the arena as if he was never rid-den before Do not assume he knows any-thing As well mannered as he is on the groundand on the trail he would act that way in thearena too if he knew how Be patient and breakeverything down into the smallest componentsand spend whatever time it takes do not rushhim I suspect he will progress pretty quicklysince he is so cooperative in every other way

As Minnesotans saddle up for thespring horseback riding season the MinnesotaDepartment of Natural Resources (DNR)reminds riders to get a Horse Trail Pass beforehitting any state-managed trails Riders withoutthe pass may be subject to fines

Introduced in 2007 the pass - whichcosts $21 for the calendar year or $5 daily - isrequired on horse trails within state parks stateforests state trails and state recreation areasfor anyone 16 years of age and older Ridersmust possess a signed pass while riding onstate-managed horse trails

The trail pass has generated approx-imately $239000 in its first two years

ldquoThe Horse Trail Pass benefits ridersand their horsesrdquo said Grant Scholen of theDNR Parks and Trails Division ldquoProceeds areused in maintaining and rehabilitating horsetrails and to improve state-owned equestrianfacilities

business told me that he had cut all of his printadvertising but was continuing to run ads onindustry related websites Times have beentough for him and his business and he said heneeded to do what he had to in order tosurvive

If he had asked for my advice I wouldhave told him what anyone whorsquos an expert inmarketing would say the worst thing you cando when business is slow is to quit advertisingAlthough he continues to run website ads it isimperative that he and other horse businessowners realize there is a large segment of ourindustry that does not use the Internet Andeven for those who do most still receive someform of print media pertaining to horseswhether itrsquos a breed industry publication or aregional tab Therefore maintaining someadvertising in both is the best way to keep yourbusiness name in front of both currentcustomers and potential ones

The need to advertise even when timesare tough is one of the first things taught in anybusiness marketing class To not do sometype of advertising is to lose your place in theindustry as a whole as well as with your targetmarket

Now I realize there are many horsebusinesses today who are struggling just tomeet day-to-day tangible expenses likerentmortgages merchandise etc whichmakes more intangible expenses like anadvertising budget the seemingly obviousthing to cut Another argument and one I hearfrequently ndash especially from horse businessowners who have been around for a long timeis that everyone knows who they are Thatmay be true among existing customers butremember that even though the economy istough and a number of owners have sold theirhorses there are still new people gettinghorses everyday How can new horse ownerspossibly know where to buy their tack or feedif yoursquore not running an ad in a traditional medi-um

Here are a few guidelines for getting themost out of your advertising budget and formaintaining an advertising plan even whenfinances are limited

Create an advertising plan First and fore-most request a media kit from the publicationsand other media you want to advertise in A

media kit will usually include rate cards edito-rial calendars ad sizes and a sample issueThen instead of relying on some hodgepodgeplan for when you advertise sit down with acalendar and plan what should be advertisedwhen Having a 12-month plan that corre-sponds with the editorial calendar is one of themost cost effective things you can do Forexample if you are the owner of a horse trail-er business in the Midwest where show sea-sons usually end sometime by October anddonrsquot resume until April running large sale adsfor new trailers November through Februarymay not be the best choice Ads for new trail-ers have the best reach during the time of yearwhen potential buyers would be looking topurchase one (probably early spring throughmid-show season) By fall the direction of anad for a trailer dealership (if yoursquore a dealer-ship that also does servicing) should changeto winterizing

Determine the best time to advertiseSome times of year are better to advertisethan others and these times depend on whatyou sell or do A tack shop owner should runtheir biggest ads during pre-show and showseasons as well as right before ChristmasMany publications also have issues that havehigher print runs because they go to horseexpos shows etc Running an ad in one ofthese issues will get more exposure for thesame price Advertising in a special issue likea January or February issue (many publica-tions feature these as their annual stalliondirectories) is another way to get the most outof an ad Readers tend to hang onto theseissues for the entire year

Place less expensive ads If yoursquove beenrunning four-color ads and slow sales havelimited your finances consider going to blackand white or alternate between color onemonth and black and white the next You canalso decrease size of a display ad to savesome money Another economical means ofadvertising are the directories most publica-tions have where a business card size ad runsmonthly The going rate for these is $125-$280 a year for local and regional publicationsand higher for national breed publicationsClassified ads are another economical meansto continue to run an ad each month Irsquove seenthese as reasonable as $8-$15 a month for10-15 words

Consider coop advertising Co-op ads aregenerally something offered by manufacturersto their vendors ndash where if they purchase acertain amount of product they are included inan ad for free The concept is something thatlocal horse businesses could do themselvesIt will however cost something However bypooling monetary resources with other horse

businesses in theirarea each owner could contribute a smallamount of money and end up in a decent sizedisplay ad For example letrsquos say a variety ofhorse businesses and services from trainers toriding instructors and from tack to feed storesare available in your area you could runand ad having a theme of ldquoHorse Businessesof Southwest Michiganrdquo Every business par-ticipating in the co-op ad could then be listed

Trade services For example a tack shopcould consider trading merchandise whichpurchased at cost to a breed organizationpublication for horse shows or year-endawards the retail price equivalent in advertis-ing space In addition if you operate anequine service like horse training or ridinginstruction or are a blacksmith etc proposewriting a column or an occasional article foryour local or regional equine publicationsTrade payment for the column or article foradvertising space or trade for at least a men-tion of your business in a bio at the end of thepiece

Advertising Even When Times Are Tough

these are caused by the return of horses backout onto pasture too quickly In order to preventany problems it is important to make the changeonto pasture very gradually For some horseswith underlying issues it is better to keep themin a dry lot with no access to pasture This waytheir diet can be under strict control Some ofour horses who are overweight or have otherspecial circumstances can live out on pasturewith their herd mates with the use of a grazingmuzzle The terms Laminitis and Founder are oftenused interchangeably but there is a differenceFounder usually refers to a chronic conditionassociated with the rotation of the coffin bonewhereas acute laminitis refers to symptoms

associated with a sudden attack Laminitisresults from the disruption of blood flow to thesensitive and insensitive laminae of the feet(Laminae secure the coffin bone to the hoofwall) Inflammation interferes with the wallbonebond In severe cases these can separate Thecoffin bone (the wedge-shaped bone within thefoot) can sink downward and eventually pene-trate the sole of the foot Laminitis can affectone or all four feet although it is usually seen inthe front feet

Signs of acute laminitisinclude heat in the feet lameness increaseddigital pulse in the feet pain in the toe region ofthe foot when hoof testers are applied andor asawhorse stance (the front feet are stretchedout in front of the horse)
