Olympic Coach and Author Jane Savoie Joins Presenters for ChicagolandEquestrian Lifestyle Expo November 20-21

Jane Savoie (Wellington, FL) willjoin equine industry leaders inpresenting programs at Horsemen’sCouncil of Illinois’ ChicagolandEquestrian Lifestyle Expo &Holiday Market.

“As an Olympic coach, internationalcompetitor, author of five books, and sought-after speaker, Jane willmotivate, inspire and educate you,”says Joy A. Meierhans, Expomanager.

Sponsored by Purina Mills, Expowill be November 20-21 indoors atthe new Expo Center at LakeCounty Fairgrounds in Grayslake(Chicago), IL.

The Expo Center can accommodatebooths and seminar areas but cannotaccommodate horses, hence Expo’sstrong focus on education and “AllThings Equestrian” shopping.

Savoie was the 2004 and 1996 dressage coach for the Canadian 3-Day Event Team inAtlanta and Athens. She also coached several top dressage and 3-Day Event riders for the2000 Olympics, and while in Sydney she helped U.S. rider Susan Blinks win Bronze forthe U.S. team.

A member of the U.S. Equestrian Team since 1991, Savoie has represented the UnitedStates in competition in Germany, Holland, France, Belgium and Canada. She was thereserve rider for the bronze medal-winning Olympic dressage team in Barcelona in 1992.Savoie has written five books and collaborated in eight additional titles. Her books havebeen translated into French, German, Dutch, Spanish, Italian and Polish.

In addition to giving attendees the opportunity to learn from experts (the 2009 Expoincluded 50 presentations), the expo will present “all things equestrian,” for currenthorseowners and the one in three households wanting to own or ride a horse in the future, according to Horse Industry Alliance research.

Steve Kenyon, communications specialist for the University of Wisconsin’s College of

Agricultural and Life Sciences, called last year’s Expo “the best equestrian educationopportunity,” he’d ever se en. Kenyon and his wife participated in a hands-on sessionlearning about leg wraps, “Different wraps for different reasons.”

Program details for all topics, presenters and times will be available at the Expo websitewww.HorsemensCouncil.org.

“Whether you’re looking for feed, tack, togs, a barn to house them – or just a good timelearning more about horses and every aspect of the equestrian lifestyle – you’ll find it atEquestrian Lifestyle Expo,” Meierhans said. “Last y ear’s expo included more than 100different vendors, some with what looked like everything from their brick and mortarlocations,” she said.

“The shopping is set up across the 65,000-square-foot Expo Center floor, with learningopportunities and fun activities in dedicated seminar and game areas,” Meierhans said.

“This is ‘not your father’s ’ horse fair; we’re including programming you just won’t findelsewhere,” she said.

Vendors will offer English and Western tack, clothing for all breeds and disciplines; feed, supplements, health care products; facilities, equipment and stable supplies (barns, stalls, fencing, waterers), trailers and vehicles.

Holiday gift items will include jewelry, paintings, prints, sculpture, books, videos, stationery, home/barn/lounge accessories – even chocolates in the shape of horse heads.Part of Expo’s programming format will be roundtables – literally – where attendees canspend 15 minutes at a table with an expert before moving on to the next table, topic andexpert. Think of it as speed dating with the pros.

The Lake County Fairgrounds Expo Center is north of Chicago in Grayslake, IL – westof I-94 and south of Gurnee Mills and Six Flags Great America. It is at the intersectionof Peterson and Midlothian Roads, located ½ mile westof US 45 and ½ mile east of IL 83.

Gaited horse expert “stars” at the Midwest Horse Fair®

Since 1980, Larry Whitesell has been known as arenowned gaited horseman, with success in theshow ring -- winning regional, national and grandnational championships. In 2002 he was trainerof the year. He has held judges cards in severalgaited breeds. This celebrity in the gaited horseworld will be one of the “stars” to attend theMidwest Horse Fair® on April 15-17, 2011. Witha theme of “StarGrazing,” the 2011 Midwest

Horse Fair® will be rolling out the red carpet for many of the top names in the horse industry. This annual equine expo is one of the nation’s top equestrian events and will be held at the AlliantEnergy Center in Madison, Wis.

Initially, Whitesell trained using the traditional gaited horse methods, thinking these were the onlyway to yield gait. As his training progressed, he wanted to train gaited horses to a higherlevel so they would gait for any level rider and the riders could count on them to be safe anddependable. In his quest to learn correctness and lightness, Whitesell began studying classicaldressage in the early 1990s from contemporary masters who had studied under Nuno Olivera andat classical schools in Europe. He continues his education each year from classical dressageinstructors in both training and riding.

Whitesell travels the U.S. and Canada doing clinics and equine expositions. His goals are to helppeople understand what makes gaited horses gait so they can spare the horses from some of thetraining myths attached to the gaited world that are not in the best interest of the horse.

Page 19: Midwest Equine Online

This trainer teaches riders how to help their horse to relax so they can teach a correct response tosubtle cues. His clinics are a shot in the arm for any riding program, providing very intenseinstruction to all levels of riders that instills an eagerness they will carry with them to help furthera riders relationship with their horse at home.

Started in 1979, the Midwest Horse Fair® has been continuously growing, with a strong focus oneducation and high-quality entertainment for individual horse owners, families, and those whojust love horses. Over 500 exhibitors offer unique shopping and educational opportunities.Demonstrations and ongoing entertainment, along with hundreds of clinics, seminars, and eventsthroughout the weekend offers something for everyone.

The Midwest Horse Fair® is owned by the Wisconsin State Horse Council, Inc. All proceeds fromthe Fair are returned to the WSHC and are used to represent and foster a unified equineindustry in Wisconsin, promote the equine through leadership, education, service andcommunication, and to take a proactive role in the future growth and development of the equineindustry.
