Aesthetic:
The aesthetic I chose for this project was one similar to that used in the 2005 film Brick. Director Rian Johnson made the film on a less than million dollar budget, shooting and editing the entire project himself; because of this the film has a very distinct look. I tried to use this style in my project by having thematic colors and sharp lines. Johnson proves throughout the film that he doesn’t need a big budget to make an effective film. By following basic shot composition rules, Johnson made a cinematically beautiful film on a shoestring budget. My goal was to replicate this.
Lyrics: From The Morning – Nick Drake
A day once dawned, and it was beautiful A day once dawned from the ground Then the night she fell And the air was beautiful The night she fell all around Artistic Statement:
When taking my pictures, I tried to capture environment as much as possible. I wanted big, beautiful shots of the trees that constantly surround me. By using natural light and natural color, I could capture the things I see everyday in a very particular way.
I wanted to incorporate the beauty of the lyrics in my photos, and I tried to show the naivety and softness demonstrated in the song. Jumping into a project headfirst takes courage and I think the images I captured complimented the lyrics of the song accurately. Beauty was the key of these pictures, and beauty is the key of the lyrics.
In addition, I tried to have my pictures be somewhat sequential. I wanted to show the sun setting, and the reddish hue it casts on the world. The first picture was taken in the late afternoon while the sun set. As the series progresses, the sun sets more leaving the world in a red hew. The lyrics reference the span of a day, and the beauty that the world reveals at the intervals of day and night.
In conclusion, my series of photos is meant to represent the song From the Morning by Nick Drake using the same aesthetic Rian Johnson uses in the movie Brick. The slightly lower quality pictures add an additional level of pure simplicity to the lyrics in a very effective way. Nick Drake sings that the air was beautiful in a very particular way. In these images I wanted to capture not only the sensation of sight, but the sensation of sound.
