Middlebrook i s located i n the southern portion of t he Valley of Virginia, t en miles southwest of Staunton. Situated amng low, ro l l i ng h i l l s a t the headwaters of Back Creek, the v i l l age is one of the e a r l i e s t and best-preserved ru ra l vi l lages i n Augusta County. The town prospered during the 19th century as the r e s u l t of its key locat ion along a major road between Staunton and Lexington. This road, well established by 1800, was a turnpike by 1851 and s t i l l continues a s one of the major county routes.

The v i l l age was p la t ted i n the l a t e 18th century on lands owned by Nancy and W i l l i a m Scott . On April 6, 1799, t he Scot ts sold twenty-seven l o t s . Like several other ear ly Valley towns, Middlebrook was planned a s a s e r i e s of contiguous l o t s along the main road, separated every three o r four l o t s by an a l ley . By the f a l l of 1805, Scot t had p la t ted and sold other back l o t s behind the s t r e e t l o t s on the southwest and northeast s ides of town. By 1885, a t t he time of the Hotchkiss Map and a t the height of the v i l l age ' s pros- per i ty , most of the l o t s had been s e t t l e d and the town had expanded beyond i t s or ig ina l p l a t t o include a black community west of town and an area t o the south which included some shops, a church, and the parsonage.

Nineteenth-century buildings s t i l l predominate on both s ides of the main s t r e e t , re- f lec t ing the character of the closely s e t t l e d s t reetscape by the end of t h a t century. Approximately thir ty-eight of the present buildings a r e i l l u s t r a t e d on the 1884 Hotchkiss "Plan of Middlebrook." The extant buildings a r e excel lent examples of loca l vernacular archi tecture . The t r ad i t i ona l cabin form, usually with the hal l /par lor plan and log construction t h a t characterized Augusta County, is found i n abundance here along the main road as well a s on the s i d e roads: it is also described i n several ear ly insurance records. Even one of the f i r s t br ick homes was constructed with t h i s plan. By the mid-century, the popular "I"-house design had been introduced in to the v i l l age , probably through John Randolph's imposing br ick dwelling. This form was soon repl icated i n the v i l l age preference for log and l a t e r , by the end of the century, frame construction. A s i n the county, the "IW-house, sometimes with the loca l var ia t ion of an enclosed cen t ra l s ta i rcase , was so pervasive t h a t it endured through the end of the 19th century: only two a syme t r i ca l Victorian designs were b u i l t during these years. The 20th century brought several bungalows. two brick neocolonial designs, and three brick ranch houses, re f lec t ing the v i l l age r s ' desi re for the new "popular" house designs over t r ad i t i ona l forms.

In addit ion to t h i s domestic archi tecture , several l a t e 19th-century commercial build- ings survive, including f ive s to re s , a frame school building, two churches, an Odd Fellows Hall, and a shoemaker's (now beauty) shop. Except f o r the remodeled schoolhouse, a l l these s t ructures r e t a i n the famil iar gable-end rectangular block form, while the churches elaborate on t h i s form w i t h projecting f ron t towers and r ea r chapels. These two churches a r e excellent examples of 1880s ecc les ias t ica l a rch i tec ture i n the county--first, a brick parish church w i t h elaborate brick decoration, and second, a frame church, b u i l t f o r a black congregation and one of the few i n t h i s p a r t of the county which a re s t i l l i n use today.

The t i gh t ly k n i t v i l l age plan and vernacular houses and comnercial buildings c rea te a strong sense of cohesiveness i n the present-day vi l lage. The weatherboarded facades, huge exter ior stone and br ick chimneys, and l a t e 19th-century decorative-sawn porches b u i l t d i rec t ly along the old turnpike c rea te a steady rhythm of forms and designs enclosing the narrow road. I n the ear ly 20th century, the church on the h i l l overlooking the v i l l age

Statement of Significance (in one paragraph)

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

Middlebrook i s one of the o ldes t and best-preserved rura l v i l l ages i n Augusta County. The v i l lage boomed throughout the 19th century a s the r e s u l t of its key locat ion along a major north-south route, and l a t e r turnpike, between Staunton and Lexington. In the 20th century, t he town declined, yielding t o t he growth and indus t r i a l development of neighboring Greenville. Consequently, l i t t l e new building o r even remodeling of old buildings has occurred during t h i s century, preserving an excel lent grouping of 19th- century vernacular a rch i tec ture s t i l l arranged i n the or ig ina l town p l a t . Two rows of closely spaced dwellings and s tores l i n ing the main road r e t a in t he character and sca le of the v i l l a g e during the height of its prosperity i n the 1880s'. Most of the ear ly 19th- century dwellings were vernacular rectangular log cabins o r more pretentious brick "1"- houses, both with Federal woodwork. By the l a t e 19th century, "IW-houses had become the most popular plan, constructed of log o r frame. The weatherboarded walls, l a rge ex te r ior chimneys, and decorative f ront porches s i t t i n g d i rec t ly along the o l d turnpike create a sense of continuity throughout t h i s small settlement. A var ie ty of archaeological s i t e s complement the a rch i tec tura l record. These document the his tory of the black sett lement a t the west end of t h e v i l l age and a r e capable of providing i n s i g h t in to black community l i f e following emancipation. Other s i t e s represent a record of t he comerc i a l and indus- t r i a l development of Middlebrook during the second half of t h e l 9 t h century.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The decades a f t e r t he Revolutionary War brought a f l u r ry of speculative town building i n the Valley of Virginia, i n response to increased population and f lour ishing t rade net- works. During the war, Valley res idents had real ized the need f o r an improved road south of Staunton, and i n t he 1780s, two Indian paths were developed f o r t h i s use. Middlebrook, p la t ted on the western route i n 1799, was one of the f i r s t two v i l lages i n Augusta County. I n h i s his tory of Augusta County, Waddell claims t h i s name came from its locat ion "on, o r near, the r idge dividing the waters of the Potomac from those of the ~ a m e s . " ~ Oral history sources, however, claim the name came from John McCutchan, one of the town's e a r l i e s t s e t t l e r s , who i s - s a i d t o have named the cornunity a f t e r a New Jersey town where he had been s ta t ioned during the Revolutionary War.2

One of t he f i r s t regions s e t t l e d i n Augusta County, the Middlebrook area was se t t l ed by Scotch-Irish immigrants who came i n l a rge numbers t o the Valley during the middle of the 18th century. Toward the end of the 18th century, the Scotch-Irish were joined by the Genans. The s a l e records indicate t h a t t he town was a blend of both these ethnic groups, with some families of English background, l i k e the Randolphs, who came from eastern Virginia. Several of the e a r l i e s t county churches were located i n t h i s v i c in i ty and re- f l e c t the ear ly sett lement of t h i s area. These include North Mountain Meeting House (1740).
