    Students will be warned and then referred for discipline if inviolation of school-wide rules

    Negative Consequences

    Teacher will use whatever consequence fits the action taken by thestudent. This will not always be the same response for every student inevery situation, but will generally be something along the lines of thefollowing:

    POSITIVE CONSEQUENCES

    Students following the rules will be rewarded with the following

    consequences:1. Positive educational environment and increased learning2. Receive written and verbal praise from the teacher, administrators

    and classmates3. Earn points towards Munchkin Monday (eligible to any students who

    make it through the prior week with no warnings)4. Positive phone calls home5. Eligibility for positive-behavior-party at the end of each unit (any

    students who went the entire unit without receiving a detention)

    NEGATIVE BEHAVIOR TRACKING SYSTEM

    1. Shared excel folder amongst all 7th grade teachers will be used to trackstudents behavior, both positively and negatively

    2. Rewards will be set up based upon this tracker as will parent-teacherconferences, administrative involvement, and so forth

    POSITIVE BEHAVIOR TRACKING SYSTEM

    1. Individuals will receive credit with each positive day towards MunchkinMondays and Positive-Behavior-Parties, tracked via shared excel folder

    2. Classes will be rewarded for whole-class positive behavior rewardsthrough the BOOST system 5 detention-less days in a row for a classwill result in a random prize/reward (outside period, candy/ice cream,

    COMMUNICATING WITH FAMILIES

    1. Introductory phone call at the beginning of the yeara. Introduce self and expectations for the student academically andbehaviorally in class

    b. Collect phone numbers and email addresses if applicablec. Describe classroom rules and consequencesd. Inquire into any problems with morning detention system and

    offer to work around schedules (all parents will be notified 24hours in advance of a detention)

    e. Give out engrade passwords and instructions for tracking studentsprogress

    f. Answer any questions parents may have2. Start of year letter, contract, and survey home with students the firstweek. Families will have to sign letter and I will request that they fill

    out survey. Students will bring back letter for a homework grade.3. Engrade will be updated at the end of every week4. I will contact families when student behavior warrants it, according to

    positive and negative consequence rules outlined above.5. Any family contact will be tracked in a Contact Log found in the

    student section of each classroom binder

    ProceduresPROCEDURE SPECIFIC STEPS/GUIDELINES

    Entering the room1. Shake the teachers hand and greet her politely

    before entering the room.

    2. Retrieve your folder from the classroom bin3. Retrieve the daily Do Now from the Do Now

    Tray4. Proceed directly to your assigned seat and sit

    down5. Have only your folder, pencil or black ink pen,

    and DO NOW activity on your desk.6. Begin work on your DO NOW activity. You are to

    work on your DO NOW silently andindependently.

    7. When finished, put your Do Now in theweekly-work section of your folder

    8. When finished sit silently. The entire processshould take no more than 3-4 minutes and isessential to us maximizing our learning time.

    Do Now Students should start work on Do Nows right away found each day in the Do Now Tray. The timerwill let them know how much time remains. This isindependent, quiet work

    Teacher will circulate to check homework, takeattendance, monitor students

    When timer rings, teacher will go over the DoNows

    Do Nows will be graded at the end of the week aspart of students work folders. The Do Nows willcount as a portion of the students participationgrade

    Homework Students will be given a homework packet with theweeks homework assignments each Monday.

    It is students responsibility to get this packetcompleted on-time each day and to have it with

    them at the start of class each day Packets will be checked off for completion each

    day, and collected at the end of the week forgrading

    The nights Homework will also be posted on theHomework section of the blackboard

    Word Walls Vocabulary words introduced in lessons will often beused via a Frayer Model as the Do Now the next

    Quiz/Test-takingprocedures

    Teacher hands out quiz/test materials. Work is individual and room should be silent. Students remain in seats and raise hand for

    teacher to come collect the test.

    Students may not talk until EVERYONE hasfinished their test.

    Any talking/getting out of seat/etc will resultin an automatic 0 on that quiz/test.

    Movement withinclassroom

    Students remain at their desks unless givenpermission or directed to move.

    After receiving permission, students completetask quickly and quietly, taking the shortestroute possible to and from desk.

    In group work time, students will have freedomto get up and get supplies/books/materials asneeded for their group

    Bathroom/water fountainprocedures

    Students will be taken twice a day whole group all 7

    Speaking in class Absolutely zero talking during the Do Now period Raise hands to speak in class at all times Only exception is group work time, during which

    you may speak quietly to your neighbors, andpresentations in which the presenter orpresenting group has the floor

    Pencil policy Students are expected to bring a pencil to classevery day.

    Students will get one free pencil pass if theyforget/lose their pencil.

    If students continue to come without a pencilthey will need to stay after school to make upthe work they missed by not coming to classprepared.

    Pencils must be sharpened BEFORE the bell rings.

    If your pencil breaks during class, hold yourpencil in the air. This signals that you need tosharpen your pencil.

    Wait for the teacher to give you the signal tosharpen your pencil. At this point, you mayleave your seat and get one of hand-held pencilsharpeners that are kept by the blackboard.The metal and electric pencil sharpeners maynot be used during class.

    Once you have sharpened your pencil quietlyreturn to your seat.

    Disposing of trash There is a bin for trash. Please wait until the endof class, collect your garbage and put in thetrash bin on your way out of the room.

    There is NO getting up in the middle of class tothrow things away.

    Garbage found around a students desk willresult in a detention where student must cleanup the floor the next day

    Nameless work Nameless work will posted on bulletin board foridentification by student. No more than halfcredit will be given for this work.

    Coming late to class

    Students who come late must always have a pass.If your absence was unexcused you must get apass from the office.

    Once you enter class if the Do Now period isstill going on you may attempt to catch up. If itis over you will lose credit for that days DoNow and must go directly to your seat and waitfor the teacher to give you instructions.

    Make up work/Late work If you miss a test or a quiz - there will be 1make-up day for Quizzes and Tests (usually the

    following Tuesday in the morning before school). If the make-up is missed, students must take a

    zero for that quiz or test unless there was anexcused absence

    Classwork cannot be made up (excused absenceswill not detract from grade)

    No late homework will be accepted. Ever.

    Re-dos Students who do poorly on a quiz or test cancomplete a re-do in which they schedule aconference with the teacher and revise theirwork.

    This is available for all tests and quizzes until thenext test or quiz has been given.

    What students need topurchase for class

    Spiral, lined notebook to be kept in theclassroom (for quick-writes)

    Pencils to have each dayHanding out papers In the case that extra papers need to be passed

    out, they will be passed from one student to thenext around the half-square desk set up

    Passing in worksheets orassignments

    All homework assignments should be out on yourdesk during the Do Now so the teacher can checkthem and or go over them immediately.

    Classwork should go into your folder where it willbe graded each weekend.

    Quizzes and tests will be collected by theteacher and graded each weekend then placed inreturned-work folder for pass-back

    Students will have this work passed back to themin their returned-work folders each Monday and

    then re-collected and filed in student cumulativeportfolios (select pieces of work will be filed inshow-portfolios)

    Getting studentsattention/Transition

    Teacher will use count of 5 countdown to getabsolute quiet and all students attention. Anystudents not paying attention at that point willget initial non-verbal warning and so on.

    Dismissal procedure After you have finished all of your work and thelesson has closed, place all classwork in the

    appropriate section of your folder and close it Make sure that your homework packet is placed

    in your book bag for you to take home

    Stay in your seat until the teacher gives youpermission to line up at the door

    Drop off your folder in your classes bin as youleave the room

    We will leave the classroom when all students

    The line leader will stop at each cornerFire drills Students should leave materials where they are

    and line up at the door with line leader at thefront.

    Teacher will dismiss leader, class should followhim in a single file and orderly line. Teacher willshut and lock door when all students haveexited.

    Class should stand in single file line in yard untilgiven permission to return to school.

    Line leader will lead class back to classroom andshould wait at the door if necessary until teacherarrives to open door.

    Students should file back to their seats andresume activity.

    Interruptions Students should remain in seats and working onactivity.

    Student greeter will be in charge of heading offinterruptions at the door and taking amessage/note for Mr. Shafer if its not urgent

    If a student misses class If absence is unexcused student will not be ableto make up work

    If absence is excused, student should go to theweekly work folder and pull out anynotes/assignments from the day(s) missed.

    All absent work must be in the work folderturned in at the end of the week

    1) Student Work Portfolios all non-posted or non-selected workwill go into this chronological work portfolio once it has beenpassed back to students to view via their returned work folders.Portfolios will be kept in an egg crate with a file for each

    student.2) Returned Work Folders will be empty most of the week and

    stored together in their own file at the front of each class workportfolios. Will be taken home and filled up with work fromstudentsClass Work Folders and then passed back tostudents at the start of each Monday for a 5 minute review-your-work period.     My name is Mr. Shafer and I will be teaching your student U.S. History this year. I am

    writing to introduce myself and let you know that I am available to you anytime of the dayvia phone or email. My number one priority is that your student learns in my classroom andI am willing to do whatever it takes to make sure that that happens.

    I have attached a copy of the class syllabus for you to review. The syllabus includes mygrading policies, classroom procedures, behavioral expectations, and the materials yourstudent needs for class. Additionally, this year all of your students grades will be postedonline each week, so youll have the opportunity to track their progress in my class.

    Ive attached a survey to this letter so that I can be in contact with you if necessaryabout any successes or challenges your student may be having in my class.     Do Nows and Classwork

    Class will start each day with a Do Now. Students will receive full credit for the DoNow by entering the room silently and answering the question within the first 5minutes of class.     Students will have a homework packet each week. This has nightly assignmentswhich are listed on the front page. Each assignment will be checked off as studentscomplete their Do Nows quietly. The packet will be collected every Friday at thestart of class and graded over the weekend. No late packets will be accepted.

    Excused absences

    Students must bring a note from home on their first day back to have an absenceexcused. They will be excused from Do Now and Classwork for day(s) missed.

    They are responsible to complete homework missed by the next day.Unexcused absences

    Absences without a note from home will be considered unexcused. This includesabsences resulting from disciplinary action (such as suspension).

    Students cannot make up any work missed during unexcused absences for credit butare encouraged to check with group members to review any new material.

    Late work Will not be accepted unless in the case of an excused absence.

    Quizzes and Tests

    We will have a quiz every week and a Unit Test approximately every 4-6 weeks. If you miss the quiz or test, you may attend the 1 make-up day scheduled and re-

    Selected Class Procedures

    Bathroom/water fountainAs a rule, students should take care of this during class bathroom breaks or during lunch.

    Students are given two emergency bathroom/water fountain passes per marking period.Students sign out and back in.

    Late to classStudents are late once the door has closed. If late, a student must go to the office and geta pass to come to class. They may lose credit for any work missed during that time.

    Required MaterialsStudents must bring the required material every day. All other materials will be providedand kept in the classroom.
