SPRAY DRIFT MANAGEMENT Theinteractionofmanyequipment-andweather-relatedfactorsdeterminethepotentialforspraydrift.Theapplicatorisresponsibleforconsideringallofthesefactorswhenmakingapplica-tiondecisions.

Avoiding spray drift is the responsibility of the applicator.

Importance of Droplet SizeAnimportantfactorinfluencingdriftisdropletsize.Smalldroplets(<150-200microns)drifttoagreaterextentthanlargedroplets.Withintypicalequipmentspecifications,applicationsshouldbemadetodeliverthelargestdropletspectrumthatprovidessufficientcontrolandcoverage.Formationofverysmalldropletsmaybeminimizedbyappropriatenozzleselection.

Restrictions During Temperature Inversions Donotmakegroundapplicationsduringtemperatureinversions.Driftpotentialishighduringtemperatureinversions.Temperatureinversionsrestrictverticalairmixing,whichcausessmallsuspendeddropletstoremainclosetothegroundandmovelaterallyinaconcentratedcloud.Temperatureinversionsarecharacterizedbyincreasingtemperaturewithaltitudeandarecommononnightswithlimitedcloudcoverandlighttonowind.Theybegintoformasthesunsetsandoftencontinueintothemorning.Theirpresencecanbeindicatedbygroundfog;however,iffogisnotpresent,inversionscanalsobeidentifiedbythemovementofsmokefromagroundsource.Smokethatlayersandmoveslaterallyinaconcentratedcloud(underlowwindconditions)indicatesaninversion,whilesmokethatmovesupwardandrapidlydissipatesindicatesgoodverticalmixing.

Mixing and Loading Requirements Toavoidpotentialcontaminationofgroundwater,theuseofaproperlydesignedandmaintainedcontainmentpadformixingandloadingofanypesticideintoapplicationequipmentisrecom-mended.Ifcontainmentpadisnotused,maintainaminimumdistanceof25feetbetweenmixingandloadingareaandpotentialsurfacetogroundwaterconduitssuchasfieldsumps,uncasedwellheads,sinkholesorfielddrains.

No-Spray Zone Requirements for Soil Applications Donotapplywithin25feetoflakes,reservoirs,rivers,permanentstreams,marshesornaturalponds,estuariesandcommercialfishfarmponds.

Insectspeciesthathaveacquiredatolerancetoimidaclopridandotherneonicotinoid(Group4A)insecticidesmaybecomedominantifGroup4Aareusedrepeatedlytocontroltargetedspecies.Thiscaneventuallyresultinthelossofthisclassofinsecticidesasaviablecontrol.

DonotmakemorethanthreeconsecutiveapplicationsofMIDASH2SCAgand/orotherGroup4Aneonicotinoidclassproductshavingasimilarmodeofaction.Followinganeonicotinoidseriesoftreatments,ShardaUSArecommendsrotatingapplicationswithotherproductsthatcontroltargetspecieswithadifferentmodeofactionbeforemakingmoreapplicationsofneonicotinoidproducts.Usingarotationofinsecticideclassesapproach,alongwithotherIPMpractices,isaneffectivestrategyforminimizinginsectpest’sresistancetothisclassofchemistry.

Soilapplicationsofneonicotinoidclassinsecticidestocropsshouldbefactoredintotheresistancemanagementplansforfoliarapplicationstothecrops.OtherGroup4A,neonicoti-noidproductslabeledforfoliartreatmentsinclude:Actara,Assail,Calypso®,Centric,Intruder,Leverage®andTrimax®.Other4AGroup,neonicotinoidproductsusedassoiltreatmentinclude:Admire®andPlatinum.
