Midweek Price Guide

Page 3: MID_1510w1

September 29, 2015 2

Midweek Market ReportOverview ^ Caution prevailed in framing lumber

markets. Many traders anticipated the start of Oc-

tober and the pending expiration of the Softwood

Lumber Agreement October 12. Gains in futures

pulled some traders off the fence. Buyers filled near-

term needs readily, which generated enough sales to

support firm to higher prices in the South. Mills were

often frustrated by highly specified inquiries and de-

mands for prompt shipping. The loonie weakened.

Southern Pine ^ The trading pace moderated, but

most prices continued to advance. Buyers focused

inquiries on mixed loads that included highly speci-

fied tallies. Price strength was most evident in the

narrows. #2 2x6 was the best seller on the westside.

2x8 was scarce because of waning production of this

width in recent weeks. Downward pressure on #2

2x12 eased. Recent curtailments helped align supplies

with demand. Torrential rains stifled demand along

parts of the Gulf Coast and Florida.

Western Spruce-Pine-Fir ^ Business picked

up mildly for some mills Tuesday. Some producers

planned to halt or limit shipments October 1-12, in

anticipation of the SLA expiring at the end of that pe-

riod. So-so activity in the field kept buyers cautious,

but a move up in futures caught some traders’ atten-

tion. Prices of #2&Btr eroded, as mills lowered quotes

to help spur any orders before month’s end. Sales of

#2&Btr 2x4 and 2x6 were reported in the $230s.

Eastern Spruce-Pine-Fir ^ Demand perked up

modestly for some mills in reaction to a rise in fu-

tures. Orders primarily came from U.S. markets.

Mills south of the border struggled to compete

against their Canadian counterparts, who benefited

from further weakening of the Canadian dollar to the

greenback. Dealers badgered mills on the status of

recently purchased loads.

Coast ^ Supply and demand remained in relative

balance in Hem-Fir and dry Douglas Fir #2&Btr.

Sales were busier for dry Fir, and 2x12 remained in

tight supply and posted the lone price increase. Fir

2x4 8-foot dry studs were sometimes available at dis-

counts; -9s were firm to higher.

Inland ^ Most prices in the Inland region were un-

changed. Buyers harried their suppliers for informa-

tion about when loads ordered earlier would arrive.

White Fir/Hem-Fir prices in Northern California

softened, but Fir&Larch #2&Btr 2x12 was tight and

strong. Fir&Larch 2x4 9-foot stud trims gained $10.

Ponderosa Pine #2&Btr boards were harder to find,

although few buyers were looking.

Green Douglas Fir ^ Slow sales of Std/#2&Btr

random prompted some mills to lower quotes or lis-

ten for counters on selected widths. Cuts were often

small, and confined to 2x4-2x10. 2x12 was firm.

Oriented Strand Board ^ Price trends were flat to

higher as September came to a close. Already at highs

of the year, some prices edged up across the South.

With little hesitation, buyers covered any additional

needs with loads for next week or sooner that were

available from a few mills. Prices were mostly flat in

the North and in the West.

Southern Pine Plywood ^ Sales continued to

flounder. Torrential rains along the Gulf Coast and in

Florida didn’t help. Buyers at all levels of the market

held off purchasing as long as they could. Most prices

were negotiable, with carload volumes vulnerable to

the sharpest counters. Some producers reported that

they were in the red on sales of 19/32-inch and 23/32-

inch rated sheathing.

Western Plywood ^ Mills booked trucks in the

West and a smattering of railcars to the East on Mon-

day, but Tuesday was quieter. Prices remained soft,

but producers rebuilt enough order file to take a mod-

estly firmer stance. Reports of sales of 1/2-inch 4-ply

sheathing in the $360s circulated.
