CATALOG DESCRIPTION
The study and practice of reading, and the development of vocabulary, in academic level English. Critical thinking, reading skills and the ability to contextually identify unfamiliar vocabulary in readings from a variety of disciplines.
PREREQUISITES
ESL 033
EXPECTED STUDENT OUTCOMES IN THE COURSE
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Read and understand introductory college level material.
2. Derive meaning from context and/or schema.
3. Comprehend complex narratives and descriptions.
4. Understand the main idea from complex readings.
5. Distinguish fact from opinion.
6. Identify the organization of a text.
7. Recognize recurring themes.
8. Understand content and mood of a short story or novel.
9. Skim, scan and summarize.
