Microsoft Word is a word processing program made by Microsoft.
It is part of a bunch of programs called Microsoft Office.
It is widely used because it has a long history and has a lot of features. Almost all businesses and schools use it.
It is used to make documents for reading, such as writing reports and essays. You can also use it to make resumes for example.
Other Office Suites
Microsoft Word usually costs a lot of money for people. It can cost anywhere from $150 to $400 for the entire office suite.
Free alternatives to MS Office can be:
- WPS Office (www.wps.com): Is the most close to Microsoft Office. Has some ads.
- Google Docs (www.google.com): Web based office suite. Integrates well with Google Drive. Sometimes have issues with Microsoft Office’s documents.

Note: Office 365
Office 365 is a subscription based service that is a lot cheaper than buying one version of MS Office.
It is also possibly free if you are a student of a university that uses it.
Office 365 will always be the most up to date version. You can use the web version or the installed version.

File Types: MS Word
Microsoft Word uses certain file extensions depending on the type of document you made.
The most common file type is .docx
If you see just .doc, that means it is a document made before MS Office 2007, and is old.
This also means that versions before MS Office 2007 can not read .docxdocuments.
