SCVMM is an inadequate and expensive solution for managing vSphere: SCVMM has limited host provisioning support for vSphere hosts, unlike vSphere Auto Deploy and vCenter Host Profiles. Bare-metal provisioning in SCVMM is limited to base installation of Windows and enabling the Hyper-V Role. SCVMM has no cross-platform host management features to manage virtual switches, provision storage and networking, deploy hosts, configure clusters, dynamically allocate resources or apply patches. SCVMM management of vSphere increases costs: vCenter Server will still be required. Also customers will need to buy the full System Center suite as SCVMM can no longer be purchased standalone. SCVMM is an inadequate and expensive solution for managing vSphere:

•  SCVMM has limited host provisioning support for vSphere hosts, unlike vSphere Auto Deploy and vCenter Host Profiles. Bare-metal provisioning in SCVMM is limited to base installation of Windows and enabling the Hyper-V Role.

•  SCVMM has no cross-platform host management features to manage virtual switches, provision storage and networking, deploy hosts, configure clusters, dynamically allocate resources or apply patches.

•  SCVMM management of vSphere increases costs:

•  vCenter Server will still be required. Also customers will need to buy the full System Center suite as SCVMM can no longer be purchased standalone.

•  Customers will see significant increase in operational expenses as managing heterogeneous stacks will require multiple skill sets.

2. VMware vCenter is the most efficient way to manage vSphere

SCVMM is an inadequate and expensive solution for managing vSphere

3. VMware provides an efficient and secure multi-tenant infrastructure

•  vCenter users in different business units can share resources while remaining securely isolated from one another as vCenter considers storage, network, CPUs, and memory as pooled resources without physical boundaries.

•  SCVMM’s lack of resource pool support will require hardware silos dedicated to private cloud tenants that need to be isolated.

1. VMware vCenter offers complete virtualization management

VMware vCenter Server is a complete virtualization management solution that is 36% less time consuming and 41% less complex compared to Microsoft SCVMM.

SCVMM admins cannot perform basic day to day tasks supported by vCenter. Following are examples of some key functionalities that are missing in SCVMM:

•  No capability to dynamically allocate resources to VM workloads as done by vSphere DRS or Storage DRS.

•  Limited configuration and management capability for hypervisor hosts requiring admins to use multiple interfaces outside the VMM 2012 console.

•  Extensive admin work required for network and storage provisioning.

•  No support for affinity/anti-affinity rules in dynamic optimization. •  No live storage migration support for Hyper-V or XenServer hosts.

•  Poorly integrated with other 7 products in the System Center family.
