Thepagedesignerdoesn'thavetoenterausernameorpasswordtoconnecttothedatasource,sothatinformationcannotbeexposedintheHTMLsourceofthepage.

Theuserofthepagedoesn'thavetoenterausernameorpasswordtoconnecttothedatasourcewhenopeningthepage,sothatinformationcannotbecompromisedwhileit'sbeingsenttotheserver.

OnlyaWindowsuseraccountthatisconfiguredinthesecuritysystemforthedatasourcewillbeallowedtoconnecttothatdatasource.

ImportantTouseWindowsAuthentication,theusersyouwanttoconnecttoanexternaldatasourcemusthaveuseraccountsonaWindowsdomain.UsersthataremembersofaWindowsWorkgroupcannotuseWindowsAuthentication.

ImportantBeforeyoucanuseWindowsAuthenticationtoconnecttoaMicrosoftSQLServerdatabase,aserveradministratormustconfiguretheservertousethismodeofauthentication,andmustgrantyourWindowsuseraccount(oragroupofwhichyouruseraccountisa

member)loginaccess.Additionally,theserveradministratorshouldprovideyouraccountwiththeminimumlevelofpermissionstothetablesorstoredproceduresrequiredforyourspreadsheet.


2. ClickCommandsandOptionsonthetoolbar,andthenclicktheDataSourcetab.

3. ClickEdit,andthendouble-clickNewSQLServerConnection.

4. InServername,specifythenameoftheserver.

5. UnderLogoncredentials,clickUseWindowsAuthentication.

IfWindowsAuthenticationisnotavailableforthedatasourceyouwanttoconnectto,youmustenterausernameandpasswordtoconnecttothedatasource.BecausethisusernameandpasswordmightbeviewedwhenthespreadsheetisonaWebpage,donotusethismodeofauthenticationtoconnecttosensitivedatafromaspreadsheetonaWebpage.Evenifyouarenotconcernedaboutunauthorizedusersviewingyourdata,youshouldconnectonlywithauseraccountthathaslimitedpermissionsonthedatasource.Forexample,whenconnectingtoaSQLServerdatabaseusingausernameandpassword,donotusetheSAaccountoranyotheraccountthathaselevatedpermissions,becauseanunauthorizedusermightbeabletousethisaccountandpasswordtoaccessotherdataontheserver.
