Recently, in a speech at the Dreamforce conference, Tony Prophet, deputy director of marketing dept of Microsoft has explained why Windows 10 is the next version of Windows 8.1, not Windows 9 as predicted?When Microsoft officially introduced Windows 10 on last September 30, almost the whole world was astonished. That’s contrary to everything that people anticipate and expect of a Windows 9, a seamless version of the serial number from Win 7, Win 8 or 8.1. Some people also believe that all the previous rumors are meaningless even if it was a joke of Microsoft. So what happened?

Tony Prophet said:“It came and it went.”. This is similar to Satya Nadella answer when asked about the disruption of the string version of Windows. Prophet said: “Windows 10 is not going to be an incremental step from Window 8.1. Windows 10 is going to be a material step. We’re trying to create one platform, one eco-system that unites as many of the devices from the small embedded Internet of Things, through tablets, through phones, through PCs and, ultimately, into the Xbox.”Interestingly, Prophet’s explaination is similar to Nadella’s. In Windows 10, Microsoft seems to want us to look at it from a different perspective. Instead of seeing it as an operating system which has been developed, the company is applying the roadmap that collect feedback from users. It is shown through the Windows 10 was disseminated to users quickly and extensively in a completely different appearance. It’s not a beta, not intended for programmers, which is The Technical Preview.

According to some analysts, Microsoft’s move get from the past experience with Windows 8. As such, even though the enterprise had spent more than 1.24 billion hours of testing before the official release. But many users still believe that the development team did not listen to the feedback from users. Even one month before the official release date, some people argue that Windows 8 is known as a 2nd Vista.And Prophet declared that they did not want to make the same mistakes again: “The reason we’re doing that is so we can listen to our customers. That’s also different. They were pretty much ignored by Windows 8, which was all about a touch screen for tablets. Many enterprises responded by ignoring Windows 8. Our objective with Windows 10 is … to build absolutely the best OS for the enterprise. That’s the early focus. We’ve got a million people using it. And we’re listening.”
