Introducing Windows 7WAIK 2.0 Impact on MDT 2010

From your perspective, little will change*Deployment Workbench, scripts updated to handle new and changed tools

Working with Windows 7 will be just like Windows Vista

• MDT 2010 abstracts the WAIK 2.0 tool changes. If you perform image maintenance tasks manually, then you will notice the differences with the new toolset.

Still supports Windows XP and above

Drops support for SMS 2003

MDT 2010 adds full support for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 and latest deployment tools:

Windows Automated Installation Kit 2.0

Windows PE 3.0New way to construct an image*

USMT 4.0New Hardlink and offline migration capabilities

Deployment Image Servicing and Management toolReplaces several previous tools, adds new enumeration capabilities

MDT 2010 makes these changes transparent

Introducing MDT 2010Removed support

No support for SMS 2003 OS Deployment Feature PackYou can continue to use MDT 2008 Update 1 and BDD 2007 Update 2 with SMS 2003 OSD

No support for Windows Vista RTMWindows Vista SP1 is the minimum, due to underlying tool restrictions

No new functionality for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003

But we will continue to support deploying these with MDT 2010, for those who need to work with combinations of OSes.

No additional server-specific functionalityServer role and product installation actions postponed for now

Upgrading to MDT 2010Paths and processes

Back up any customizations that you made

Please ensure that you have backed up your server too

MDT 2010 can directly upgrade any MDT releaseThe distribution share content is not immediately upgrade

Run the “Create Distribution Share” wizard to upgrade the scripts and executables on an existing distribution share

Upgrading from BDD 2007 can be done tooFirst uninstall BDD 2007 (note that this will remove files from the distribution share)

Then install MDT 2008 and run the “Create Distribution Share” wizard to upgrade the existing distribution share (this puts the files back that were removed by the uninstall)
