2 MICROPHONES | INTRODUCTION

IntroductIonWhether on stage, in the studio, place of worship or a conference, choosing the correct microphone for the job will be the difference between being heard and being heard clearly. This guide will help you select the correct microphone for the job in hand with some helpful explanations on the main uses of each microphone type.

Mic placement is also important so you will find some suggested set-ups as a starting point included in these pages.

A couple of things to look out for...

Frequency responseA microphone’s frequency response measured in Hertz, refers to the range from lowest to highest that a microphone will pick up. A microphone with a frequency response range of around 80Hz - 15kHz would make a good choice for a vocal mic.

Alternatively drums, for example, would be more suited to a lower frequency starting around 50Hz and cymbals with a high frequency reaching up to 20kHz.

SensitivitySensitivity refers to how quiet a sound the mic can detect. The lower the number, the more sensitive the microphone is.

How to choose the right microphone There are many different types of microphone available, which can be quite confusing initially. Many are designed to suit a particular type of recording or sound reinforcement situation and it is important to select the best type of microphone for the task at hand.

Stage WorkStage performances can be brutal for microphones, which can be dropped or knocked inadvertently. Dynamic microphones are by far the most rugged type and are more likely to survive the arduous stage environment than condenser mics. With PA systems, it is important to use directional microphones with cardioid or hypercardioid polar patterns to reject peripheral sound, which may lead to feedback from the loudspeakers. Wireless handheld and neckband mics offer the most freedom for performers to move around and use the whole stage. For wider stage coverage, pencil condensers make excellent overhead microphones for chorus lines and shotguns can pick out subjects at a distance but may be more prone to feedback.

Conference and MeetingsMicrophones are often used with sound reinforcement for a speaker or chairperson addressing an audience. Conference microphones usually have condenser capsules for sensitive pickup and goosenecks to enable them to be directed towards the orator. Placed as a left and right pair on a lectern, these can provide useful speech reception whilst keeping hands free during presentations. Alternatively, discreet neckband microphones combined with wireless systems offer more freedom of movement and maintain excellent voice pickup.

SurveillanceUsually, surveillance means secret recording and here, boundary microphones are useful for integration into the surroundings and shotgun microphones can listen in at a distance without being detected.

BroadcastFor camera work, shotgun microphones have a very narrow polar pattern, which can accurately focus in on a subject being filmed. These have condenser capsules for high sensitivity and many come with hot-shoe mounts for attaching to the camera. Lavalier microphones offer the most discreet wireless solution and will offer adequate speech pickup for recording. Since there are no large speaker cabinets involved, feedback is normally not an issue. To record a wider area, boundary microphones or arrays of pencil condensers can be used. As with conference work, lectern microphones are equally useful for the same purpose in a broadcast application.

Studio RecordingIn the studio, the primary task for a microphone is to capture the most accurate sound possible. For this purpose, condenser microphones can outperform dynamic types for frequency response and sensitivity. Large condenser microphones with high quality internal preamps are favourite with most studio engineers. Many of these offer switchable pads and filters and even multiple response patterns, making them useful for many different voices or instruments. Some instruments have a very loud output (e.g. drums, brass etc.) which are better handled by dynamic instrument microphones and, in some cases, pencil condensers offer the ideal pickup for high pitched instruments. Wireless is usually not a requirement in the studio.

In general dynamic mics are more rugged than condensers, making them more suitable for on-stage use. They can handle high sound pressure levels for example powerful vocals or snare drum hits and they usually have a built in shock mount to reduce handling noise. Their polar patterns are designed to pick up sound close to and in front of the mic whilst not picking up sound from further afield, for example sounds from other vocals or instruments nearby. This design also reduces the tendency to feedback (howl or high pitched whistle).

9 DYNAMIC VS CONDENSER | MICROPHONES

Dynamic Microphones Vs Condenser Microphones The way that a microphones picks up sound determines how useful the resulting audio output is for different applications. There are 2 main types of capsule used in microphones – dynamic and condenser.

Dynamic MicrophonesA dynamic microphone is so-called because it operates like an electrical dynamo, where the vibrations are received onto a diaphragm which has a coil attached to it, which is in close proximity with a powerful magnet. The vibrations move the coil through the magnetic field and this causes a current to flow within the coil, which is delivered as the audio output.

Cons:• Lower sensitivity• Limited frequency response• Variable tone colouration

Pros:• Simple, robust design• No power supply required• Relatively low cost

Condenser MicrophonesA condenser microphone is so-called because it uses a capacitor, otherwise known as a condenser, to transform sound into an audio signal. The capacitor is a pair of fine electrical plates, separated by an insulating layer with a charge applied to one of the plates. As sound waves hit the condenser capsule, the plates vibrate and the distance between them is very slightly varied, allowing charge to leak over from one plate to the other, which is an electrical replica of the sound vibrations, which is then boosted by an internal preamp before being delivered as an audio output.

Cons:• Requires power supply (phantom, battery or USB)• Prone to damage by impact• Relatively high cost

Pros:• High sensitivity• Wide frequency response• Minimal sound colouration

Condensers are more sensitive and more suited to studio work. Some however, are designed for live work, for example our PCM2 used as overheads for choirs, pianos, drums etc. Condensers will pick up the subtleties from vocal and instrumental performance that can sometimes be missed by a dynamic mic. Proximity effect is more pronounced in condenser microphones; it increases the response of bass frequencies as you get closer to the mic and is a benefit used by singers and engineers to colour their sound. These microphones require a power source, either from a battery or phantom power supplied from the desk or preamp. Ensure you have a phantom power source if considering a condenser microphone without its own battery power.

UHF WIRELESS SYSTEMS

Wireless microphones are often referred to as cordless or radio microphones. Wireless microphone systems are generally used in live sound applications, allowing performers or presenters to move freely without the constraints of wires or cables. All systems are made of two components: the transmitter, which converts the sound from the musician or performer into radio waves; and the receiver which picks up these radio waves and converts them back to an audio signal, which is then fed to the amplifier or mixer.

Non-Diversity

Receiver OptionsThe receiver ‘receives’ the signal from your transmitter and from there, you plug it into an amplifier or mixer in the same way as you would any other audio source. Receivers with single antenna are referred to as non-diversity, whilst two antennas indicate a diversity receiver. Direct and reflected signals can cause occasional dropout of the signal, two antennas can help deal with this, so are better suited to longer distances, or where there is no direct line of site between the transmitter and the receiver.

22 MICROPHONES | WIRELESS

Wireless Microphone SystemsAll wireless microphones have 3 things in common:

• Microphone• Transmitter• Receiver

The microphone capsule can be either dynamic or condenser (powered by the same batteries which are powering the transmitter) and can take the form of handheld, neckband or lavalier, depending upon the usage. Handheld microphones usually contain the transmitter within the same housing whereas neckband and lavalier microphones are small and require a separate bodypack to house the transmitter.

The transmitter converts the audio into a radio signal by attaching it to a carrier frequency. These carriers may be Very High Frequency (VHF) or Ultra High Frequency (UHF) and microphones cannot share a frequency within a certain proximity to one another (each needs its own carrier). Usually, the reception area is between 25 and 60m between transmitter and receiver without obstacles. There are certain frequencies set aside for wireless microphones and some of these do not require a licence for use.

VHF (173.8MHz – 175.0MHz)Available VHF frequencies vary from country to country and all QTX VHF systems are designed for licence free use in the UK. These systems cost less than UHF systems but this also means that this band is usually more crowded and there is more chance of clashing with another transmitter within the same area. The maximum number of VHF systems that can be used within the same reception range is usually 3.

UHF (863.0MHz – 865.0MHz)The licence free UHF band for wireless microphones is harmonised for the UK and most EU countries. These systems are more expensive but this also means that there is less chance of a carrier frequency clash. Citronic wireless systems have switchable carrier frequencies, whereas Chord and QTX UHF systems are fixed. Chord’s new HU6 system offers 6 licence free UHF transmitters, which is the most that can work in proximity together.

Tips for using a wireless microphone system:

Placing your receiver away from interference can help. Equipment like CD players, PCs and effects units can cause interference, so if you are experiencing problems, try moving your receiver away from these by using a longer cable to plug into your amplifier/mixer.

Feedback – the high pitch whistle and sometimes lower pitch ‘howl’ are usually a result of the microphone being too close to the loudspeaker. Try to avoid situations where the loudspeaker placement is directly behind the microphone.

Lavalier or ‘tie-clip’ microphones should be clipped on clothing in line of site with the voice. There is a danger that a head turning away from the mic will lose the signal. These microphones are most suited to static use.

Transmitters run on batteries and these should be constantly monitored and replaced. A low battery in the middle of a performance will start to cause noises and eventually stop working. A fresh battery at the beginning of a performance is the safest bet!

Whilst a range of up to 60m can be achieved on some systems, please bear in mind that although a signal will travel through walls, it will be considerably reduced as a result. In addition some building fabrication and use of other devices can affect the signal too, so always err on the side of caution when planning for wireless distance.

Antenna(s) should be ideally placed above an audience, so as to get a clear line of site between your transmitter and receiver. If using a diversity system your antennas should be at a 45 degree angle. This increases the distance between the tips and optimises the diverse signals.

Handheld vocal microphones are designed for close proximity. For the best signal, the microphone should be held close to the vocalist.
