    INTRODUCTIONTobe quite honest, there isno simple wayto

    master the practice of magic. Becoming a realmagician takes work, dedication, and will power.This small book deals with introducing andexplaining the exercises that will allow someonewho has these prerequisite characteristics, aswellasthe strong desire to become a magician, to trainthemselves in this art . No book, and no teachercan promise either a short cut or a royal road tobecoming a practicing magician. On the otherhand, there are few royal roads in any ofthe manyother fields ofhuman endeavor either.

    ofvarious kinds, strange religions, and even thevery odd that typified the public scene of thirtyor forty years ago has now passed away. This isbut one example tousofhowmuch thingschangein the universe. The ever changing universe ofhuman interests, desires, drives, and demands, isfascinating to those who have witnessed it.Unfortunately, having witnessedthis broadsweepof change indicates one's advanced age, aswellastheir desire to be an open minded spectator toall of the many changes that mankind passesthrough.

    These changes involve something that isknown as the Human Intention, whichtheoretically shows what human beings aresupposed to concern themselves with at aparticular time, or in aparticular place.Naturally,and as might well be expected, we humansconcern ourselves with the most emotionallyladen facets ofwhatever it isthat weare exposedto of this ever changing kaleidoscope ofhumanactivities. We all feelthat in satisfying,or at leastin stimulating our emotions, wewill gain somebenefit from these ever changing experiences.Perhaps wedo gain somebenefit, but I amcertainthat the benefit that we receive from thesechanging emotions isnever sogreat aswemightwish it to be.

    Hollywood has brought magic to the screenin a way that cannot ever be replicated in therealworld, even by the most talented orpowerfulmagician. The movies and television havepresented uswith a standard ofmagical practicethat no realmagician can ever equal. As a result,people become bored with the kind of magicalthe slim results that they see in the real world.Hollywood and its associates in the other facetsof the entertainment industry are far moreinteresting, aswell asbeing farmore appealing toour natural human desire tohave power over ourimmediate surroundings.

    Our minds review the spectacular, supposedmagical,work that weseeon the motion picturescreen and the television and apply it to usin therealm of magical practice. Unfortunately, asmagicians,we can never replicate these technicalachievements of the entertainers' art. Thesefantasies remain only in the dreamsofthose whowish for the power that the fantasies of theseentertainments of supposed magic implied.Having these dreams,wemaystill seek in vain tohave these fantasies manifest for us in our dailylife.

    development of the magician them self. This issomething that is never either shown, or evenmentioned in the Hollywood epics that treatmagic in such an appealing and interestingmanner. The work required to manifest even thesimplest magical spell into reality on this earth isbeyond the desire of the undedicated to evenattempt.

    Were there a real 'Hogworts,' or a real 'HarryPotter,' I assure you that his training would bequite different fromwhat ismentioned in thoseinteresting books, or shown in the excellentlymade motion picture. Whatever it may be, realmagic isnever simplyan academic study.Magicaltraining isalwaysamatter ofdifficult and willedself-development, The primarypurposeofthe truemagician isto develop themselves, mentally andin their ability to deal with the non-physicaluniverse.

    It is my desire in this book to prepare thestudent to undertake some magical training onhis orher own. It isa guide to self-developmentfor the aspiring magician. If the student hasdedication and follows these instructions, theycan go quite a long way toward achieving thegoal ofbecoming amagician.

    While I taught classesinmagic and the occultarts for over twenty years, I no longer do so. Atmy rather advanced age,I know that I shall notbe teaching classes in the future either. I amnowtoo old to do anything but write on the subject,and that only asmyage and health permit.

    A few people have written me concerningthe progress they have made in developingthemselves from the information given in mypreviousbook, 'Practice of Magic.' However,thatbookwasintended togiveonly some introductionto magical work, not to reveal the method oftraining oneself to become amagician. This bookgives that information.

    Ofcourse, for most people, taking a fewstepson the road ofreal self-development will soaltertheir life experience that they will often decidethat no further steps need be taken. For others, avista opens and the desire to proceed further stirstheir spirit. This is quite alright, as it is notintended that every human being master the artofmagic, just asit iscertainly not intended thatevery human being become a physician, anattorney, or a chef, for that matter. We all haveour place, our great good fortune isto find andaccept the place in our world that best suits us.

    All magical studies begin in approximately thesame way,mastering the art ofphysical relaxationand learning to pay attention to the universearound you. Once these abilities have beenlearned, and made a part of the student 's life, i t ispossible for the sincere student to go on fromthere. If they are not learned, the person whowished to practice magic will have to strugglethrough having most oftheir magical efforts fail,or they will soon enter into the self-delusion sooften found among many ofthose who only thinkthat they have magical abilities, and whopleasantly delude themselves in this way oftheirsupposed magical powers.

    Youshould read this book through first. Thenyou should consciously decide within yourself tobegin mastering the exercises, start ing with thefirst chapter. Save for a few instances, which youwill note as you read through the book, eachchapter of this book is to be mastered by thestudent before the exercise in the next chapter isseriously entered into. Ifthis isdone, by the timethe book is finished the person who hasaccomplished this process ofself-development willbe able to be at least fairly accomplished in thearts of a practicing magician. I might also pointout that they will not be the devotees of anyparticular specialized school ofmagical practice.

    There are no instructions given herein forpracticing Cabalistic magic, Enochian magic, orKaos magic. Those who master these exercisesare free to go into any of these they might wish.Many other books cover these specialized studies.

    The question of magical schools, arcanemystical organizations, occult lodges, and secretorders, are one that I have always avoided. In myyouth I was directed to set myself to mastering aseriesof exercises very much like those given here,save only that I had an instructor who taughtme, guiding me each step of the way. He had apoor opinion ofmagical lodges, and other similarorganizations, and I am afraid that his pooropinion of them has carried over to me.

    There are quite probably a number of theseorganizations in the world which are of greatbenefit, and which adequately prepare theirmembers to practice magic. However, I mustadmit that Ido not know ofany of them. On theother hand, as I do not know them at all, I donot criticize or condemn any of them either. Isimply saythat I amnot a member ofany of them,nor do I seek to affiliate myselfwith others in anykind ofmagical work.

I do not believe that it isto be treated asan end in itself.The exercises that take someoneon that path always seem to have a beneficialresult on the person who masters them, whetherthey actually complete the work of becoming amagician or not. It isfor this reason that I makethis information available to those who desire tohave it. Ifyou have the will and dedication tofollowthese exercisesto their conclusion, youwillfind that there aremany other rewardsthan onlybecoming a competent practicing magician thatare in store for you.

    Mastering the relaxationofyourphysicalbodyand learning to pay attention to all of yoursurroundingsare alwaysthe firststeps inbecomingamagician. Most people live in an introspectivestate of physical tension. This may be observedin them by looking at the way that they holdtension in their mouths, where physical tensionoften first reveals itself in people.

    Physical tension-is socommon amongusthatit is almost an accepted part of the averageperson's life. The psychoanalyst may call thistendency toward tension body armor, as bymaintaining a state of physical tension, many

    people believe that they are protecting themselvesfrom the random assaultsof daily life. In fact, whatphysical tension actually does isalienate peoplefrom the world in which they live. Their physicaltension makes it difficult for them to sense andobserve what isactually happening around them.

    The person who isphysically relaxed isopento experience life in its fullness. The person whois tense is attempting to control their life, andthus has placed him or herself in a position inwhich they can only respond to those events thatthey wish toadmit into themselves. In this way,they may well losemuch ofthe value of their reallifeexperience.

    Thus it first becomes necessary to master theart of physical relaxation, and gradually removethese often ingrained internal physical tensionsfrom one's being. Only as these physical tensionsfade and disappear isit possible for the individualto begin to make progress in sensing the non-physical universe around them. Mastering the artof relaxation of the physical body is always thefirst step in mastering the disciplined self-controlthat isrequired for anyone to eventually becomea real magician.

    There are any numbers of methods that may

    be used to promote physical relaxation. Itdoesnot matter which method anyone uses, so longasit isone that iscomfortable for the person usingit. It isthe goal ofmastering the art of living yourlife in a physically relaxed state that is beingsought; the means ofreaching that goal isactuallyrather unimportant, so long as the goal isachieved.

    Daily practice of the physical relaxationexercise isanother thing that ismost important.This practice must be achieved by exertingconscious self-discipline on oneself to actually dothe work required to bring physical relaxation intotheir daily life. Developing the self-disciplinerequired to daily physically relax ones self isanother thing that assists in self-development. Inthis case, it builds the development of thediscipline required to perform the daily relaxationexercise. So improving your self-discipline, andyour willpower, is always a side goal of therelaxation exercise.

    Some methods ofphysical relaxation include:The Yoga 'Death Posture,' in which the

    person lays down on a comfortable surface andplaces themselves in a state ofcomplete physical

    relaxation by imagining that they are dead. Thehands are alongside the body, the legs extendedstraight out, and the eyes are closed. In thisposition the goal isto consciously rid oneself ofall tensions and physical feelings that are notindicative of perfect physical relaxation. Theconscious mind continually explores the physicalbody, gently commanding any tense part of thebody to relax.With sufficient daily practice ofthis,orof any other relaxation exercise, it isquite soonpossible toenter into a state ofcomplete physicalrelaxation at will.

    Another method of mastering physicalrelaxation is through tensing and relaxing themuscles of the body. In this method, one musclegroup is tensed and then relaxed, then anothergroup ofmuscles are tensed and relaxed, until thewhole body has been tensed and relaxed in thismanner. For example, the right leg isfirst tensedand relaxed, and then the left leg is tensed andrelaxed. The right arm, the left arm, the back andsoforth follow this tension and relaxation inorder.Many people have found this to be an excellentmethod ofmastering the relaxation process.

    A third method istelling yourself mentally torelax a part of your body, and then moving on torelax another part of your body. In this method,

    asyou lie or sit passively,you mentally command,say,your right hand to relax. Then you commandyour wrist to relax, and so on, gradually workingyour way up your body, unti l your entire body iscompletely physically relaxed.

    Attaining the state of physical relaxation isthe first step. Once you have attained that stateyou should maintain yourself in that relaxed statefor at least ten or fifteen minutes each day. It isthis timed period of physical relaxation thatdemonstrates to your body that it is no longernecessary to live a life oftension.

    Specific areas where tension often afflictspeople negatively are their abdomen, their face,their neck, their shoulders, and their spinalcolumn. The person who is mastering the art ofphysical relaxation should payparticular attentionto relaxing these areas as they relax themselvesin each of their daily relaxation sessions. All partsof the body are sensitive to tension, but in myexperience, these are the parts that it " is mostdifficult for the average person to thoroughlyrelax. This iswhy I suggest that special attentionbe paid them in learning and practicing therelaxation exercise.

    As with any other exercise, it isiinpossible to

    master the physical relaxation exercise perfectlywithout constant daily repetit ion. The world'sgreatest musicians practice their musicalinstrument for hours every day. The world'sgreatest athletes practice their sport forhours everyday.Ifyou wish to become proficient in any field,practice in that field isalwaysessential. This isastrue of the exercises leading to magicaldevelopment as it is of the exercises leading toattaining any other state of proficiency.

    You must practice all of your exercises untilyouhave mastered them socompletely that theyhave become automatic responses welling up fromdeep within your being. This perfection cannotever be accomplished in a short time. Even thisdeceptively simple relaxation exercise will requireat least a year of daily work to really master. Donot be impatient-the time will pass you by inany event. Ifyou master the exercise you willgainsomething from the passage oftime. Ifyou do notmaster the exercises, you will have lived throughthe time, but you may well have gained nothingofpermanent value to your real being fromhavingdone so.

    Persevere and develop the self-disciplinerequired to master the relaxation exercise. As youbecome more proficient in performing it, however

    you relax yourself, you will see that its real valueto youwill slowlyincrease. More difficult exercisesare always ahead, and until you master the art ofphysical relaxation you will be unprepared forthem, and unfortunately, you will be unable tomaster them.

    Persevere, remembering that the mastery ofphysically relaxing yourself is the key to all elsethat follows.

    BREATHINGThis is as good a place as any to mention

    proper breathing. The proper way to breath iswith the motive power ofyour diaphragm. Thisisthe waythat singers and good public speakersbreathe. When you breath like this, you arebreathing asnature intended you to breath.

    If you are breathing with chest expansionrather than with your diaphragm you are notgetting asmuch air, or asmuch oxygen, as youreally need. There are any number of scientifictestsand researchesreportsthat have beenwrittendealing with the advantages of diaphragmbreathing. However, many people still insist on

    breathing by expanding their chest. No matterhow common, this isan incorrect, abnormal, andself-limiting wayforpeople to breath.

    Tolearn ifyouarebreathing correctly, simplyplace your hand on your abdomen. Now take adeep breath. If your hand moves and yourabdomen expands when you inhale, you arebreathing correctly.Ifnot, practicebreathing withyour diaphragm until youhave mastered it, andmade it the normal manner ofyourbreathing fromnow on. Once you habitually breathe with yourdiaphragm you will discover that there areadditional benefits to your doing so.Most peoplewho change from breathing with their chest tobreathing with their diaphragm find that theirspeaking voice stabilizes in a better and morepleasing manner aswell.

    Please note that you should be breathingthrough your nose, not your mouth. Not manypeople breath through their mouths any more,but some people do. Breathing through yourmouth isanother wayof limiting the non-physicalenergythat youare taking into your system.Onceyou begin breathing through your nose, the non-physical energy that you are accumulating witheach breath will be greater. If you breath withyour diaphragm, and through your nose, youwill

    soon find that you will have a great deal morenon-physical energy to deal with. This will makeit easier for you to relax your physical body, aswell asto master any ofthe other exercises givenin this small book.

    Many people prefer to inhale through theirnose and exhale through their mouths. There isnoting at all wrong with this practice, and infactit is an excellent way to habitually breath,although this method islesscommon in our societythan it isin some others. Youmight try breathingin this way to see if it is a manner of breathingthat you might wish to adopt. So long as you arebreathing with your diaphragm, and inhalingthrough your nose, you will be getting both theoxygen and the vital non-physical energy thatyou need in your daily life.

    Breathing isso very important to us as livingbeings on the earth that we tend to take it forgranted. We should ever not do so, as properbreathing is what provides us the very real,although non-physical , energy that we need forsuccess in our daily life. It ispossible for a personto live for days without water, for weeks withoutfood, and for months or even years without anyhuman companionship at all. However, wecannot live for a half an hour without air .Proper

    breathing will also assistsus greatly in maintainingour general level of physical and mental health.Diaphragm breathing always produces greatbenefits in all who use it.

    When you breathe with your diaphragm, youmust avoid straining yourself. The breaths youtake should be relaxed, even, rhythmical, andeasy. Breathing easily, without strain or tension,assists in calming your normal tensions, aswell asin relaxing your physical body.

    Interestingly enough, the more relaxed youare, the more you will find that breathing withyour diaphragm iseasily accomplished, while themore you breath with your diaphragm, the easierit willbe for you to relax your physical body. Thisiswhy you should breath with your diaphragmwhen you practice the relaxation exercise. Thesetwo effects work together quite harmoniously, sopractice them together until breathing with yourdiaphragm becomes the way you ordinarilybreathe. Once you have developed the habit ofdiaphragm breathing, I am sure that you willnotice some ofthe other beneficial effects ofthispractice entering into your life aswell.

    Learning to pay attention isanother exercisethat has hidden values in itfor those who masterit. Of course, we all believe that we pay attention,but in fact, only a few ofusreally do so. Attentionissomething ofthe nature ofa commodity, in thatthere isalways an exchange ofattention present,whether the attention passesbetween two people,or between a person and any physical object.When we pay attention, by really focusing ourattention on something external to ourselves, wealways receive attention in return.

    Attention has another commodity likequalityas well, if we lack attention, we may feel needyand uncomfortable, often not knowing what i t isthat we need. If we have received sufficientattention, we feel satisfied and comfortable. Oncewe have mastered the art of paying attention topeople and things outside of ourselves, we shallnever lack for attention again. We shall beconsiderably more comfortable in our daily lives,and wewill not present ourselves to others asonewho has more needs than they can ever possiblybe expected to fill.

    This gives us an insight into those who lackthe ability to pay attention; they usually presentthemselves as being needy. When you seesomeone who iseither needy, over talkative, ordisruptive, it is quite likely that what he or sheactually needs is attention from someone else.When you feel in that state yourself, it is quitel ikely that you also need attention. In this case,you will find that you seek out attention, andusually obtain the attention youneed, in either apositive or negative manner.

    The urge to talk, or speak excessively isanother sign that you, or another person who isdisplaying that tendency, isin need ofattention.In time, you will find that by concentrating on

    do it correctly. Persevere, and youwilleventuallymaster this exercise aswell.

    Likeall oftheseexercises,itwill take youquitesometime to actually master it. When you finallymaster the exercise, you will discover that youhave been essentially ignoring most ofthe thingsthat impinge upon your daily life. Youwill alsofind that you are now able to do more than youhave been able to do previously. Youwill alsoprobably note that you are accomplishing morewith considerably less effort. Learning to payattention is a pleasant example of how theexercises that are used to develop someone interms of mastering magical operations alsodevelops them as living human beings on theearth.

    GAINING CONTROLOF YOUR MINDAsmost human beings believe that they are

    the sole possessors of their mind, they usuallybelieve that allof their thoughts originate entirelywithin themselves. Later on we shall eventuallylearn that this is something that gives thepracticing magicianaverygreat edge in their dailydealings with other people. However, before wemay take advantage of this fact, we must firstpostulate that this commonly accepted belief issimplynot true.

    We must first gain real control of our mind,

    so that we can eventually recognize just wherethe thoughts in our mind actually do originate.To do this, we shall first have to learn to blankour mind. Later on we must learn to arrangeourselves mentally so that we can recognize ourown thoughts, and distinguish them from thoseother thoughts coming into our mind from someother source.

    We must accept that this entire process willtake usquite some time. Until wehave masteredthe art ofcompletely relaxing our physical bodies,and have made some progress in the art ofpayingattention, any efforts we make in learning tocontrol our minds will generally be a wastedeffort. This iswhy I recommend that you masterthe first two exercises before going forward withthe exercises in this chapter. Doing sowill makethe following increasingly difficult exercises moreeasily learned. Although I must assure you thatno matter how well prepared you may be, theseexercises are still quite difficult for anyone toactually master. This is why dedication andperseverance are so necessary in becoming amagician. However, even attempting to masterthese difficult exercises will assist you instrengthening your will power. A strong will hasbenefits of its own, which always brings goodthings into the life of the one who has it.

    If we are to identify stray thoughts in ourmind, wemust first be able to pay total attentionto our own thoughts. We can do this only ifweare living in a state ofcomplete physical relaxation,and are able to consciously focus our attentionon our thoughts.

    Being able to do this successfully implies thatwe live in a state in which we are completelyunconcerned about the opinions ofother people,and can yet maintain the necessary social nicetiesand courtesies that are required ofus in our dailylife. Italso means that we are unconcerned aboutour immediate physical environment, and yet areable to make our own way in the world asproductive members of the society in which wehave found ourselves.

    Further, this condit ion also implies that weare unconcerned or indifferent to any other forcesaround us, especially those physical forces, theforces ofnature, and the actions ofother people,over which we really have no control at all.Learning to be unconcerned about the criticismof others, whether expressed or implied, isoftenquite difficult for us.We alwayswant other peopleto hold a good opinion of us. In fact, it is alwaysimpossible for all other people to like us,so ifwecan just accept that some people will like us, and

    some other people will not, we will do far betterforourselvesover the courseofour life.The desireto have everyone like and respect us is never apractical one anyway.

    Tosomepeople, this state of indifference mayseemto beanegative condition. It isnot. Tootherpeople, this is a state in which they are able toactwithout being limitedbyexternals, particularlyby those external pressures of the physical andsocial universe that surround us to attempt toinfluence us in various ways. These forces areactuallycompletelybeyondour consciouscontrol.We had best realize this, and just accept that it isso. This is another reason why becomingindifferent to all ofthe things wehave no controlover at all is ultimately very important to ourpersonal development.

    Once we have reached the state where weare able to begin tomeet these goals,wecan startmaking the effort to control our mind. We mustbegin this effort by consciously deciding that itwillbe all right ifwe cease the internal chatter ofour mind for five minutes each day. Havingconsciously,thoughtfully, and willfully,made thatdecision, we will now move a step further andbegin to implement it. We shall do this byusingourwill power.

    Learning to blank your mind is not ever afirst step in mastering magic. There is a well-known training manual for magicians that giveas one of its first exercises holding the mind ina completely blank state for ten minutes eachday. This is all very well if the student hasreached that point, but most people who desireto become magicians find this to be quiteimpossible for them to accomplish. I thought itto be impossible myself when I first began thisexercise. Having managed to attain that point,after striving for it for some years, I assure youthat it isnot impossible at all.

    Learning to blank your mind begins withcompletely relaxing your physical body andfocusing all ofyour attention on your breathing,while ignoring everything else around you, orinternal to you.Hopefully,by this time you havebecome accustomed to breathing with yourdiaphragm.

    While youarefocusingyourattention on yourbreathing, should any thought come into yourmindyoushouldjust ignoreit. Donot deliberatelytry and push the thought out ofyour mind, justpay no attention at all to that thought, and focusall of your attention on your breathing. Thethought will eventually goaway.Keep the focus

    of all of your attention on your breathing, andjust completely ignore everything else.

    Practice this exercise for five minutes eachday, after reminding yourself before youbegin thatyou have agreed with yourself to eliminate all ofthe random chatter from your mind for fiveminutes each day. Then just relax your physicalbody, and breath slowly and evenly asyou focusall of your attention on your breathing. If youhave really mastered the attention and relaxationexercises, you will find that within a few weekstime you will be able to blank your mindcompletely for brief periods of time, sayfor ten tothirty seconds or soat a time.

    One successful session with this or any otherexercise proves nothing. It is being able to dothese exercises day after day,week after week, andmonth after month, that really counts. Naturallydoing these exercises regularly increases your self-discipline, and to some extent, it increases yourwillpower.Again, ifyou do not do these exercises,the time will pass by for you anyway.

    It isnot unusual for people to practice theseexercises once or twice and decide that they havemastered them. I once had a student who thoughtthat they were blanking their mind by repeating,

    "My mind is blank, my mind is blank," as theydid the exercise. Of course, this is not at all whatisrequired. Tomaster this exercise you must do itexactly asdescribed, focusing all ofyour attentionon your breathing, ignoring everything else, afterhaving completely relaxed your physical body.

    Once you have accomplished this for periodsof a few seconds to a minute, you must nowcontinue to practice the exercise until you canachieve total concentration on your breathingfor as much as five minutes. Generally speakingthis will take you at least three or four times aslong as it did for you to reach absoluteconcentration on you're breathing for thirtyseconds or so. Perseverance and self-discipline isthe real key to success with this exercise. There isno easy road to this very real attainment.

    Once you are able to completely concentrateyour attention on your breathing for ten minuteseach day, and have done so for several weeks,you are ready to begin another stage of thisexercise. Focus all of your attention directly onthe emptiness of your mind. Avoid trying to feelany external sensation, just focus all of yourattention on your mind, and its lack of thoughtof any kind.

    Youwillknow that youhave achieved successwith this part ofthe exercise when you find thatyou are unaware of anything other than yourempty mind, free of any thought, free of anysensation. In the ideal case, someone, orsomething, willhave to recall you from this state,asyouwillnot easilyhear the sound ofa timer, orany other subtle reminder of the end of yourmeditation period. On the other hand, you willsoon discover why mystics ofall ageshave lovedto spend considerable time in this blank andemptymeditative state.

    Now before you go into this state, remindyourself that you are only to stay in the emptymind state for approximately ten minutes. Youshould find that youwill come out ofthe state byyourselfwhen that time has elapsed.

    Once you have achieved this state, you willfind that you have been making real progress inrelaxation, paying attention, self-discipline, andmental control. At this point, you should beginto pay attention to your thoughts, questioningtheir origin. Some of these thoughts, asyoumayfind, are not original with you. These thoughtsmay be dismissed. It isnot necessary for you tosearch out their origin. Just dismiss them asyouwould dismiss any other interloper in your life, .

    turning your attention from them. At this time,attempting to search out the origin of thesethoughts isjust awaste oftime. Later it maywellbe worthwhile, but by then you will not bedeceived as you learn to do this. At this stage,self-deception istoo easyfor you to fall into. It isthe problem of self-deception that is alwaysthegreatest trap for the developing magician.

    Practice thisexercise,payingattention toyourthoughts, and completely blanking yourmind forten minutes each day for another three months.If by that time you are absolutely certain ofyourself,and ofyourability to control yourmind,you will be ready to go on to the next step inyour training.

    physicalbodyhas been long sought, but hasneverbeen found. There isreally no royal road to theprojection of the non-physical body,or anythingelse in the field of magic for that matter. Onceyouhave mastered the previous exercises,you arereadyto attempt this next step. However,anothercaution is required, some people find that

    projecting the non physical body isvery easytoaccomplish, while others find it to be quitedifficult, or even almost impossible for them.Whichever you may find it to be, it is vitallyimportant that you follow the directions givenhere.

    I once knew a commercial artist who madeaverygoodlivingat his craft.He told meabout hisexperiences when attending art school. Hementioned to mehow those with natural talentin the entering class made him feel quitediscouragedat the possibilityofhis everbeingableto become apracticing artist. However, after fouryears ofstudy at his art school, he found that hewas now more than able to hold his own withthose whose natural talent he had originally soenvied.

    His secret was that he had followed thedirections of the instructor, and had practicedhis art just as he had been instructed to do. Intime, he had mastered his craft, while many ofthose who had originally displayed greaternatural talent had fallen by the wayside. Inmany cases, their failure was due to their desiretodo things in the incorrect waythat they hadtaught themselves. In other cases, it wasbecause they did not have the self-discipline

    that was required to master each step of theprocess that the art school taught them.

    The following instructions will seem a greatbore to those who find that they have naturaltalent in astral projection. However, if they arefollowed precisely, they will teach anyone whohas mastered the previous exercises to project outoftheir physical bodies and eventually to becomequite competent at projecting their non-physicalbodies into the real physical world. Once again,these instructions presuppose that the previousexercises have been mastered, and the studenthas the ability to completely relax their physicalbody, focus their attention, and blank their mind.All of these abilities are required to successfullydeliberately and consciously project out of thephysical body, and into the physical world.

    Yourconsciousness iswhat you think you are,it is not what you really are. When you projectyourself out of your physical body you areprojecting your consciousness, in the form of aninvisible non-physical body. Some people call thisthe astral, or starry body. I shall refer to this asthenon-physical body, as that is a better definitionof the effect.

    Your invisible non-physical body will have

    many of the characteristics ofyour physical body.Those few people who can see or sense it willperceive it asifi t were the physical you in a non-physical form. Yournon-physical body will havemany ofthe physical sensesthat you enjoy inyourphysical body.

    However, in practice, these characteristics andsenses that your non physical and physical bodiesshare will be considerably different in your non-physical body than they are in your physical body.Before you begin adventuring in the non-physicalor astral realms, you must first get used to thesedifferences. Youaccomplish this bymastering themany differences between the physical and thenon-physical realms asfound in your body.

    Should you decide not to do this, you willend up trapped in some of the many charmingand distracting glamour's and snares ofthe non-physical realm. Falling into self-delusion isquiteeasy to experience in the non-physical realm.This is the greatest danger in projecting thenon-physical body. Projecting into this land ofdreams and fantasy is ofno real value to anyoneat all . Youmust master the art ofprojecting yournon-physical body into the physical or'physically real' world if you are to become atrue magician.

    The steps to astral projection are quite simple;accomplishing these simple steps issomething elseagain.

    First, relax yourself completely while layingprone on a bed or couch. Relax your physicalbody and quiet your mind, closing your eyes.Nowfocus your attention on your body, and see it l iftout of the physical shell of your body, si tting upon the edge of the bed or couch upon which youare relaxed.

    Realize that you may be entirely successful atthis the first time you try it, oryou may not be. Ineither case, see yourself returning to your physicalbody, and once again relax your physical bodycompletely. Now situp again in your non-physicalbody, and then return to your physical body onceagain. During all ofthis, feel any of the sensationsthat may be present, but keep your eyes closed.

    Do this several times, not to simply practicethis asan exercise, but to master the art ofleavingand entering your physical body. This too takes agreat deal of repetitive practice. It is a learnedability-and you must learn it well.

    Once you have accomplished this, and knowthat 'something' has taken place, open your eyes

    in your non-physical body asyou sit on the edgeof the bed or couch on which your body islaying.Look around you. Youmay see the room you arein asit is,or you may see it in a slightly differentarrangement. Recall the room, as you actuallyknow it to be. Impress what you know this roomto actually look like over any differences that youmay see in the room with your non-physical eyes.

    Now close your eyes again, and re enter yourphysical body. Next, sit up again, this time inyourphysical body, and open your eyes.Study the room,noting any differences from what you saw whenyou were in your non-physical body. Place thesedifferences into yourmind, and try and 'memorize'the picture that you see of the room. Once youhave the view or picture ofthe room memorized,l ie down again, relax yourself, and sit up in yournon-physical body. Open the eyes of your non-physical body and look at the room, will ing thepicture you remember ofthe physical appearanceofthe room over any discrepancies you may noticewith your non-physical senses.

    It is impossible to stress too much to thenovice at projecting the non-physical body howeasy it isfor them to become lost in the allure ofthe non-physical world. Becoming lost, they willprobably see all kinds ofwonders and marvels. In

    most cases they will become literally enchanted. JUnfortunately this often leads the projector tobelieve that they have achieved great powers. Infact, they have only become lost in self-deception.They have limited themselves, and theirdeveloping abilities, severely restricting them,often permanently.

    The only way to prevent this deception,which is essentially self-deception, isto practicemastering the projection ofthe non-physical bodyinto the physical world. This is why you mustlimit your practice ofthe projection ofyour non-physical body to your room for quite some time.It is vitally necessary for you to master the art ofprojecting your non-physical body into thephysical world. Then you must learn to navigateyour non-physical body in the physical world ifyou are going to master the art of projection as areal magician. The alternative isto become onlya tourist, one who isattracted to the pretty sightsand glimmering objects that will presentthemselves to you over the course of time.

    For at least a month, you should practiceprojecting yourself out of your physical body bysitting on the edge of the bed or pallet, and thenreturning to it. With each projection you mustalso master the art of seeing the room you are

    projecting in, as it physically exists. In time youwill find that the small changes and deviancesfrom physical reality youfirst noticed will graduallydisappear. This isan indication ofprogress on yourpart, and it will tell you that after a few moresessions with the same good result you will beready to take the next step.

    Every human child who can do so learns towalkby first learning how to crawl. It takes a greatdeal oftime for the child to progressfrom crawlingto walking, and a great deal more time to progressfromwalking to running, and then playing soccer.Magicians in training must be both patient anddetermined. They must consider themselves tobe aiming toward an attainable goal. It is muchas if a child first began crawling with the goalfirmly placed in their mind of eventuallybecoming a professional soccer player.

    Master each step ofthis exercise and you willsucceed. Jump toward the conclusion, and youwill ultimately deceive yourself,and ultimately fail.

    Now that you are ready to do so, projectyourself out ofyour body by sitting on the edge ofthe bed or pallet, open your eyes, and then standup. Youmust be aware that you are likely to eitherfall into the floor, or rise a bit toward the ceiling.

    Yournon-physical body isnot affected either bygravity, or by what ever it is that may appear tobe solid in the physical world.

    Should you find that you are not standingfirmly on what you know to be the floor, focusyour attention on standing firmly on the floor,just asyou would stand on a physical floor. Onceyou are able to do this, take a step toward thewall opposite your bed or couch, being certain toneither rise in the air nor sink into the floor.

    This is usually far trickier than it seems, soyou willhave to practice doing this for quite sometime. Keep working on it, as learning to walk inyour non-physical body, while maintainingyourself on physical surfaces, isat least asdifficultas was learning to walk in your physical body.Practice walking for a while, then re-enter yourphysical body and get up and move around theroom.

    Youmust repeat this exercise for at least a fewweeks until you have mastered it. Then continuefor a week or two more, to be certain that youreally have mastered this very different art.

    Once you are able to walk around your roomwithout difficulty, and have done this for three

    or four weeks, you are ready for the next step.You will now leave your room for the first t ime.Begin byprojecting from your physical body andwalking up close to the door ofyour room. Nowcarefully extend your non-physical arm throughthe door. You should take some time to assureyourselfthat you can do this without any difficulty.

    Do this with first one arm, and then withanother. Now do it with both hands. When youare sure that you are ready, simply step throughthe door. Take a step away from the door, andlook back at it . This is to assure yourself that youhave not damaged either the door or yourself.Once you realize that you have come throughthe door safely,walk back through the door onceagain.

    You have just demonstrated to yourself thatsolid objects in the physical world are not at allsolid in the non-physical world. I suggest that youpractice this exercise for several ofyour exercisesession before going any further.

    Next, look out any exterior wall inyour room.Look out of the wall just asyou would look out ofan open window. Do not be concerned aboutwhat you see. This is only to demonstrate to youthat it is possible for you to do so. Under no

    circumstances should you attempt to walk throughthe wall . Just look through it. Fancy moves willcome later, once you are more accustomed tomoving around the physical world in your non-physical body.

    Once you have practiced this exercise severaltimes, you can walk out of you room, goingthrough the door, and walk down the hallway,being certain that you are walking on what yourecognize to be the physical floor.Youshould thencontinue to the front door of your house, but donot leave the house just as yet. Instead, turnaround and come back, impressing what youknow ofthe physical reality ofwhat you are seeingupon the images that present themselves to youin your non physical body.

    It is not unusual to find extra doorways,strange corridors, and other such things presentin the non-physical universe that have no physicalreality at all. Youmust learn to just ignore theseapparitions, and to be aware ofjust what isactuallyphysically present. Until you are able to masterthe art ofprojecting your non-physical body intothe 'physically real' universe, you are at grave riskin dealing with the non-physical realms.

    It is not unusual to find people, sometimes

    /those who are long dead, in the non-physicaluniverse. At present, you must just ignore them,although that is sometimes very difficult to do,especially if you are emotionally connected tothese people in some way.Harden your heart andignore them for now, knowing that in the futureyou will be able tohave a real reunion with thosewhom you may have lost. Rushing things at thispoint will ultimately lead to an unsatisfactoryconclusion to your ultimate development. Bepatient and continue to be determined to succeedat this task.

    Keep working on these exercises, masteringthe projection ofyour non-physical body into allof the rooms of the building or apartment inwhich you live. You can never have enoughpractice before taking the next step. Impatienceleads ultimately to failure.

    One of the things that you will soon learn isthat you are invisible to almost all people. Whilea fewpeople will be able to see you, most peoplecannot. Look at people and see ifthey see you ornot. If anyone does see you, leave the roomimmediately. Youare not ready to deal with thosewho can see you as yet.

    have no physical strength in your non-physicalbody. You must continue to project yourself andtravel in the building in which you live, beingconstantly aware of the physical reality, andignoring the non physical images that willconstantly present themselves to you. Spend atleast a month, or better two or three months, onthis exercise before you go any further. It isimportant that you master this before you leavethe building in which you live.

    Once you believe you are ready to leave thebuilding in which you, live, first allow yourself tofloat up to the roof of the building. Then walkaround the roof, looking down at the street orgrounds below. Take note of anything that youknow isnot physically present. Realize that thesethings are present only in the non-physicaluniverse, and have no physical reality.This isquiteimportant, asit isthese non-physical images thatcan easily become quite negative distractions foryou.

    Buildings that were once present, emotionalscenes, and items to which strong emotions areattached can be located in the non-physicaluniverse for many years after they have physicallydisappeared. It is possible for someone who isprojecting into the non-physical universe to see

    these things, and seeing them, to believe in their __)reality.These perceptions may not only cloud yourjudgment, itcan cause you to make decisions thatare quite incorrect. This is just another reasonwhy you must first learn to master the subtledifferences between the physical and non-physicaluniverse before you go further in yourexplorations.

    Youmust practice floating to the roof ofyourbuilding and observing the area around you,differentiating between the physically real and thenot physically real for some time before you goany further. There are also several other thingsthat you must master before you are really readyto take to the streets.

    Practice brings success, and in this art,continual comparison between what you knowofthe physical reality and the non-physical isofthe utmost importance to your ultimate ability tobecome amaster ofboth realms. Continue to workand practice with your non-physical body,although you may now restrict your practicesessions to three days a week while you go on tothe following exercise.

    VISUALIZATIONWhile you are mastering the art ofprojecting

    your non-physical body, you are also ready tobegin learning a fewsimple magical processes. Themost important of these processes isvisualization,sowewill begin with this. Later on wewill returnto more work concerning projecting the astralbody, as that is probably the most important ofthe magician's arts. That being said, I must alsoadd that visualization iscertainly a close secondto projection in importance.

    The idea ofvisualization isquite simple. Youare to learn to be able to hold a perfect image ofsomething in your mind. The more accurately you

    hold this perfect image, and the longer time, youcan hold this perfect image, the better you are atvisualizing. Sounds simple, does it not?

    The well-known nineteenth and earlytwentieth century magician Aliester Crowleymastered this exercise, and used it successfullyuntilthe day he died. He did not learn about it fromany of the many magical orders and societies inwhich he was a member either, he learned aboutitfrom a fellowmountain climber, with whom hespent some time on a sea voyage to Mexico.Education often comes dressed in strange garbs,and the intelligent person learns to acceptwhatever education isoffered to them, no matterwhat garb it is presented to them in.

    Like most magical exercises, the instructionsforthe visualization exercise arequite simple. Lookat any common everyday object , and memorizeexactly and perfectly what it actually looks like.Then close your eyesand recreate a perfect imageof that common everyday object in your mind.

    Aliester Crowley supposedly started out witha leadpencil, a good choice. He studied the pencilintently, and then attempted to recreate an imageof that pencil in his mind, holding it fixed in hismind without any change at all. Just as the

    It .ard, Crowley required two weeks to makesatisfactory progress with this exercise. On thether hand, when he began doing it, he hadprobably not mastered the relaxation exercises orthe other previous exercises that were given toyou earlier in this book.

    Ifyou have already attained mastery oftheseprevious exercises, this exercise should besomewhat easier for you. You should be able tomake satisfactory progress with it in about a weekor ten days. Practice this exercise until you havemastered the idea ofcreating and holding in yourmind the image ofseveral common objects. Picksimple physical objects, not pictures. Pencils, pens,paperclips, and other such simple things are fareasier to master visualizing in the beginning thananything more complex.

    Once you have mastered visualizing simpleobjects you will see that your ability to navigatein the physical world while out of your physicalbody will improve dramatically. Yourmemory ofwhat you see both physically and non-physicallywill have improved as well. Once you havereached this point, you may begin mastering the

    visualization of geometric shapes and simplediagrams. You can draw these shapes ifyou wish,but you must be able to recall all ,oftheir details,including any imperfections in either the drawingor the printed page.

    Once you believe that you have mastered thisexercise, it's time for a test. Take a reasonably newpaper bill , preferably a twenty-dollar bill , andvisualize it. Now hold the image of that bill inyour mind, concentrating on it and nothing elsefor at least five minutes. Then visualize that billcoming to you, and entering your billfold or purse.

    Now goout ofyour room and physically walkaround town a bit, holding in your mind thethought that the bill you have visualized, or it 'skin, iscoming toward you. Assuming that it isatall possible for it to do so, you should either findor be given a twenty-dollar bill during yourexcursion.

    Of course, if you are far out in the countrywith no one around, it's considerably less likely.If you are in the downtown area of a city duringworking hours, it 's far more likely that you willfind such a bill . Once you can call money to you,you may tell yourself that you have begun themastery of the art of visualization. Itwas in this

    way that Aliester Crowley supported himselfduring his last years, according to Ms. SusanRoberts, one ofhis many biographers.

    Letmeremind youthat even though youhavebegun the mastery ofthis art, it isstill necessaryfor you to continue to practice the visualizationexercise and hone your skills. One can never beto good at this, or any other of these exercises.

    THOUGHTTRANSFERENCEOnce you have mastered the technique of

    visualization, its time to go on to more prosaicthings. One ofthe interesting things that you canuse your newly developed abilities for is to havepeople place telephone calls to you. Of course,they have tohave yourphone number, but unlessit'sa long lost love, they probably have it or theycan probably find it. To accomplish this fete,simply visualize the person, as you recall them.Ofcourse ifyouhave a picture ofthem it'sbetter,but even without a picture, it's usually quitepossible to visualize the person. There is always

    an image of everyone you have met in yourmemory, you just have to recall that image withperfect clarity, and then hold it in your mind whileyou do this work.

    Now when you send someone a message, youmust make the message veryshort. Longmessages,more than three or four words just don't worknearly as well as a short message. If you wish tosend someone a message, it had best be on theorder of"Call George Smith." Once they contactyou, whatever long message must be given themmay be communicated over the telephoneanyway.

    While visualizing the person who isto receivethe message, form the message consciously as athought on your forehead. Visualize that thoughtasthough itwere an object, a non-physical object,but an object non the less. Once the message isformed, move it over the top of your head anddown to the back of your neck, directly underyour skull. Then, with the image of the personwho isto receive the message clearly held in yourmind, release the thought. Now put this entireoperation out ofyour mind, recalling it only whenthe person actually calls you.

    It may not seem to be too obvious, but this

    should be done only during the hours when theperson is normally awake. If you do this whilethe person is asleep it may cause them to awakensuddenly with the idea that they should call youimmediately. So practice this with exercise,dealing with one person at a time. Only do thisexercise with another person after the first personhas actually called you, and you have seen thatyou can get results with it.

    The reason for practicing this exercise slowlyisthe same asthe reason forgoing slowlywith allofthe other exercises in this book. You are tryingto master a magical technique, not learning toperform a parlor trick. This means that you workslowly,mastering each step in the technique, andfinally mastering the entire technique, sothat youmay easily do it at will.

    If you remember when you first learned todrive an automobile, you went quite slowlyat first,until you got the hang of it, so to speak. Do thesame with these exercises. In that way you willmaster the technique, and be able to eventuallyperform it quite rapidly when you desire to use it.

    As you are learning this technique, you willsoon find that some people are far better atreceiving thoughts than others. In time, you

    should begin working onlywith those whomyoudiscover difficult receiving your thoughts. In thisway, you will eventually be able to send youthoughts even to those people that might havegreat difficulty in receiving them. If you keepworking with those who are easy receivers, youwill never develop yourmental muscles. This isthe best reasonforyourworkingharder with thesemoredifficult cases.

    IDENTIFYINGTHOUGHTS

    Bythis time you should be able to identifywhich ofthe many thoughts that come into yourmind are yours and which are not. Your mindshould normally be quiet, unless you decide tothink of something. When any thought entersyourmind, examine casually,it without giving itany emotion or value. Ifit isnot a thought thatyouwishto consider, reject itby just turning awayfrom it and ignoring it, just asyou did when youwere learning to control your mind. Learn toignore any thoughts that you do not wish toconsider.

    Attempting to learn the source of theseintrusive thoughts is usually a waste of time.Rather than wasting your time with them, simplyturn away from these thoughts, ignoring them.Few of the random thoughts that enter intopeople'sminds are trulymalicious. Even the mostmalicious thoughts arebetter dealt with bysimplyturning away from them. The alternative isadding your own energy to them, by trying toconquer them, or even worse, by attempting totrace the thoughts back to their origin.

    Fightingor activelyopposingthoughts alwaysplaces your own energy into them. Adding thisenergy, quite naturally, makes the intrudingthoughts much stronger. This is the best reasonwhyyoushould not fight intrusive thoughts. Thebest wayofdealing with these thoughts isjust toignore them and just let them drop away fromyou.

    If you have been continuing your astralprojection exercises to this point, you will haveseen them gradually become better asyouhavemastered each of these later exercises. Youwillalsohave found that youhave becomebetter ableto differentiate between the physical world andthe non-physical worldwhile searching out yourneighborhood from the rooftop ofyourbuilding.

    MORE OUT OF THEBODYWORK

    Once you've mastered walking around insideyour building, and have carefully learned on therooftop ofyour building the differences betweenthe non-physical and the physical world that youcan see, it'st ime to begin going out on the streetaround your immediate neighborhood. First, Imust warn you that walking on the street inyournon-physical body is not all that pleasant anexperience. Among other things, you will beseeing many people who are no longer living, aswell as seeing those who are still alive. Youwillalso be seeing highly emotionally charged scenes,

    and 'visions' of incidents that are either theemotionally formed thoughts of others, or areemotionally charged incidents that are long past.Youmay even see entire buildings, aswell astheiroccupants, that are no longer physically present.

    So before you begin this adventure, you mustlearn more details about the true physicalcondition of your immediate neighborhood. Todo this, walk out ofyour building in your physicalbody, turning right at the doorway. Then walkaround your city block, making a right turn ateach corner. Closely observe both the details ofthe buildings and their physical appearance fromthe street, taking in all ofthe details. Ifyou havemastered the visualization exercises givenpreviously, you will have little or no trouble doingthis. This is the course that you are tofollow foryour first non-physical exploration of the physicalworld. This simple walk around the city blockyou live on will be your introduction to learningto discriminate between the day-to-day physicalworld ofyour environment, and the non-physicalworld, which contains all kinds of fantasy andillusion.

    Later that night, project out of your physicalbody, and leaving the building in the way youwould normally do so in your physical body, walk

    around the block asyoudid earlier in your physicalbody. As you make this walk, impress what youknow ofthe physical reality of the area over anydistortions or illusions that might presentthemselves to you. Make only one circuit of theblock, and then return to your home, just as youwould in your physical body, and then enter intoyour physical body.

    N ow get up and wash your face or dosomething else that isfairly prosaic. Youmust nowbring yourself fully back into the physical world.I have always found that washing myface with awarm washcloth has this effect. Other people doother familiar tasks. The purpose ofthis task istobreak any connection still remaining between thenon-physical reality and the physical reality inwhich you live your day to day life.

    This exercise should be repeated at least threeor four times each week for the next month ortwo. Do not varyfrom it, asyou will see that whileyour ability to impress scenes of physical realityon the non-physical world will gradually improve,you will also gradually be exposed to more scenesofthe non physical world, some of which can bequite revolting, shocking, or even very disgustingin nature. These scenes should simply be ignored,do not ever actively decide to oppose them.

    Fighting astral demons is hardly your task, asshould you decide to do so, others will quicklypresent themselves to you. There is li terally noend to the delusions that can encompass you inthese explorations.

    Eventually, things will settle down on yourwalks, and the non-physical scene you haveimposed the reality ofthe physical on will stabilize.You will now have to continue these walks, tosee if you can find anything there in the non-physical universe that you might be able to makeuse of. Usually there isnot much useful materialthat is present, but sometimes there is. Justcontinue the walks and keep looking, to see whatyou can see. As you continue to do this, you willalso develop your abilities in this area.

    At this point, the possibility ofyour deceasedrelatives appearing to you presents itself. Youshould pray a brief prayer that they have peace,and move on. Do not indulge yourself in enteringinto conversation with them. Itisentirely possiblethat these apparently deceased people are actuallyphantasms created from your sub conscious mind.At this time you will not be able to clearlydifferentiate between the fantasy of your ownprojection and the reality of actually seeing theshade of a departed relative. Eventually you will

    be able to tell the difference, but that all comeslater, asyou slowly gain more experience dealingwith the non-physical world.

    You may observe the non-physicalphenomena that seems to be most stable, but donot allow yourself to become drawn into it, ordecide that you should 'do something' aboutwhatever it isthat you may see.Just observe whati t is,and upon your return to your physical body,think about why such phenomena islong lasting.It is not the task of magicians to 'clean up' anynon-physical phenomena that has decided tooccupy a particular space for some reason of itsown.

    Sometimes you may see non physical beings,usually beings that look far from human in shapeor form, but occasionally you will see very humanlooking beings. Ignore all ofthese, asyou are notprepared to deal with any of them as yet. Youmay alsosee other human astral travelers, most ofwhom will not be at all aware that they aretraveling in their non-physical bodies. Youmustignore these aswell. In most cases, these will bepeople who are comfortably asleep, and have noidea that they are projecting out oftheir physicalbodies.

    Continue your walks, and familiarize yourselfwith the non-physical nature ofyour block. Aftera few months ofwalking around the block two orthree times a week you will find that things willusually settle down for you. Then you can easilydistinguish between the 'physically real' and thenon-physical illusion. This is another sign thatyou are making real progress. Now it is time foryou to go even further in learning about the nonphysical world.

    THEINVISIBLE HANDObtain a felt t ip marker, preferably one that

    has washable or easily removable ink. Art supplystores usually carry these markers. You will onlyneed one of them. The color of the marker youpurchase isnot important at alL

    In the privacy of your room, expose yourabdomen and place the knuckle of the thumb ofthe hand you use to write with right at the baseofyour navel, with your thumb pointing directlydownwards toward your groin. Using the felttipped marker, mark a spot on your abdomen at

    the tip of your thumb, directly below the centerofyour navel. Sitting comfortably in a chair, relaxyour physical body and concentrate on this spot,directing all ofyour attention to it.

    Breathe slowly and regularly with yourdiaphragm, and focus all ofyour attention on thisspot on your abdomen. Once you have identifiedthe location, and can sense it consciously, it willno longer be necessary for you to actually look atthe spot. When you have done this, visualizeyourself extending an appendage from thislocation, something like a flexible arm with ahand, but usually without any fingers on the end.This appendage more often looks and feels like atentacle projecting from this point on yourabdomen.

    Once you have extended this non-physicalappendage flex it, getting yourself used tomanipulating it . See this appendage in its non-physical form, but realize that it has a purpose foryou in your magical work, aswell as in your life.Now call this appendage back into yourself andput this exercise out of your mind until the nexttime that you practice it.

    Donot become discouraged ifyou are not ableto do this exercise the first time you attempt it.

    Keepworking on it, and continue to persevere atthe exercise until you are successful. In time, youwill be able to master this exercise, just as youhave mastered all of the others. With theconscious activation of this appendage, oftenknown as 'the invisiblehand,' youare developinganother usefulmagical ability.

    Practice this exercise every day for a week,about fiveminutes each time, once youhave beenable to locate and extend the appendage. Thesecond week practice this exercise every otherday for about ten minutes each time. Continuepracticing this exercise every other day for amonth or more, until you believe that you havegained the ability to successfullymanipulate yourinvisible hand.

    Youshouldbegin to do this exercisewith yourinvisible hand as you continue performing theexercise of projecting your non-physical bodywalking around the block that you live on. Onceyou are certain that you have mastered walkingaround your block, you may expand your walk,but do sobywalking around twoblocksphysicallybefore you begin walking around them in yournon-physical body. Each time you expand yournon-physical journeys, you must expand yourphysical journey first so that you can learn the

    true physical reality of the area. It is alwaysnecessary that you are able to maintain yourselfin the 'physically real' world while you are outon your non-physical travels.

    Youmust govery slowlyas you learn to dealwith the physical universe in your non-physicalbody. The non-physical universe has manysurprises in it for those who simply barge intothings. Some streets that are very nice in thephysical universe are verydark and quite uglyinthe non-physical world. You should avoidtraveling on any of those streets that you see inyour non-physical body as being dark and ugly.Youwillhave to avoid them until youhave gaineda great deal more experience in traveling out fyour physical body.

    Be cautious, but asyou perfect yourself, youshouldgraduallyexpand the area youtravel threenights aweek in your non-physical body.At thesame time, you should remain in or quite nearthe physical neighborhood inwhich you live. Intime, you will master this art, but practice andexperience is very important in gaining yourultimate development as a magician. This mayonly be accomplished through the constantrepetition of these exercises.

    As with most of these exercises, theinstructions aredeceptively simple.

    Balance aplaying card, or something similar,on a surface in your room sothe card ishalf on,and half offof a small height like a child's block,a book, or something 'similar, Now in your non-physical body, attempt to unbalance the playingcard; knocking it offof the slight height that youhave placed it on. When you attempt tounbalance the card, in addition toattempting tounbalance it with your non-physical body, youmust also consciously will the card to becomeunbalanced and fall.

    Spend no more than three orfour minutes adayon thisexercise.Youmaypractice thisexerciseon your return from your walk around yourneighborhood. Make the attempt to unbalancethe card, but you must be completelyunconcerned as to whether you actuallyaccomplish this taskor not. The effortofwillthatyoumake to unbalance the card isasmuch mentaldevelopment for you as actually unbalancing it,having it fall from the place you have set it.

    Now returning to your physical body, standnear the card and attempt to knock the card offof the height you have placed it on using the'invisible hand' you located and learned tomanipulate in the last exercise. Youshould againconsciously will the card to fallas you push itwithyour 'invisible hand.' Again, be completelyunconcerned about your success or failure withthis exercise. Some people can do this, whileothers can't.

    If you are successful with this exercise youhave made real progress working with your non-physical body. Ifyou are not successful, you willstill be developing your will power, as well asdeveloping your abili ties in working outside ofyour physical body. So you see, you will certainlygain something from practicing this exercise eitherway.

    A P P L Y I N GC O N C E N T R A T I O NAND FOCUSOF THE MINDThis exercise may well seem to be something

    simple, but i t is being added here to assist you indeveloping a habit that will benefi t you in manyways inyour everyday life, aswell as in your workas a magician. Ifyou have mastered the previousexercises, you have developed your mind to asharp edge. Yourmind isnow a tool that willworkwell for you, doing what you ask of it without

    any difficulty. It isnow time to apply your well-honed mind to your daily affairs, aswell asto anymagical work you may be doing.

    Whenever you are speaking with someone,concentrate intently on listening to him or her,deliberately paying close attention to them. Theidea is to be actively listening intently to whatthey say.Focusyour conscious mind and attentionon them, as if it were a spotlight that you wereaiming directly at them.

    In the pauses that always come between yourspeech and their reply, listen intently, as ifwhatthey were about to say were the most importantwords that you will ever hear. Once the otherperson finishes speaking, slowly and carefullyformulate your reply inthe pause that follows theirspeech, thinking carefully about what you willsay, and wording your reply so it will have thegreatest possible effect on the person you arespeaking to. You should always speak softly, butspeak while paying extremely close attention tothe other person, treating them as if they werethe only other person on the face of the earth.

    In the course oftime, asyou gradually masterthis exercise, you will find that other people willbegin to hold you in a state ofhigher regard. Some

    people may almost hold you in awe when youspeak to them. When you begin to notice this, itist ime to soften your approach a bit. Youshoulddo so in such a way that people are not asconsciously aware ofthe intensity you are focusingon them as you listen to them or speak to them.You can moderate this intensity by displaying asincere social interest in the other person, asdemonstrated to them by your facial expressionas well as by the words and manner-of yourspeaking to them. .

    Many outstandingly successful people havemastered this art, and not a few credit their successin the world to it. When you interrelate withpeople in this way, they feel flattered, and areusually quite pleased with you when you havefinished speaking to them, regardless ofthe subjectofthe conversation. Once you have mastered thistechnique, you will find that people will give youfar more respect and attention that you havepreviously received from them. The use of thistechnique is one of the reasons why magiciansare usually looked at asbeing really extraordinarypeople.

    This technique isnecessary in magical work,aswhen you speak to any non-physical entity, orto the spirit of any physical object, your full

    attention and concentration must be applied tothem. They will easilysense ifyou aredistracted,and will then believe that you are not serious inyour request to them. However, shouldyouspeakwith them in this way, they will accept yourwords as being meant, and intended to befollowed. They will not only be more amiable toyour requests,but will alsotake these requests farmore seriously.

    MASTERINGYOUR VOICE

    Iwassitting ina small restaurant inNewYorkCity one evening. There were four of us, allmagicians, just finishing ourdinner. The waitresscame up to us and complimented us all on ourvoices. She said that we "all had such nicespeaking voices." Then she inquired ifwe weresingers. Considering the usual rather blase andcrass nature of waitresses in inexpensiverestaurants in New YorkCity, that was a rarecompliment indeed.

    Magicians usually do have very nice voices,

    but these voices are developed through training,those who become magicians are not usually bornwith them. Magicians also have very flexiblevoices. They are able to project the sound oftheirspeech to filla large room, aswell asbeing able tospeak in the soft and gentle whisper of strictconfidentiality. Again, these abilities, like all oftheir abilities, aredeveloped through training; theyare not usually natural to those who becomemagicians.

    The exercise given below has been used formany years to develop the voice of magicians. Iam aware that there are other exercises that maybe used for the same purpose, but I do not knowwhat they are, so I give below the exercise that Iwas given in my own training. Like most oftheseexercises, the instructions are simplicity itself.While sitting in a crouch, with your back erect,speak aloud the vowels of your native language,making them resonate to fill the room in whichyou are speaking.

    You should sit on a low chair or stool whendoing this exercise. I first used a firm cushion,about four inches high. My legs were bent, myfeet aimed away from my body, so that my feetwere flat on the floor beside the cushion. In thatinitially uncomfortable position I spoke the vowels

    for about five or ten minutes, twice a day forseveral months.

    In the English language, the vowels are takenas being A, E, 1,0, and U. For this exercise, thesemi vowels, Yand Ware added. Speaking themin alphabetical order, you would say:

    A, E, I, 0, U, W, YRepeating these vowels can quickly become

    just as boring as any of the other repetitiveexercises. However, the ultimate results from thisexercise are quite worthwhile, as the goal is notjust repeating these vowels, but projecting themout from your mouth asifthey were living things,or even commands to be heeded by others. Asyou do this, you must breath with your diaphragm,and concentrate all of your attention on yourspeaking these vowels to fill the room.

    In a few weeks time, with regular practice,you will find that your voice will subtly change.After several months ofthis practice, you willfindthat you have developed what isknown asa voiceofcommand. Youwill find that people you speakto will now be paying more attention to whatyou say than they formerly did. This isone of thenatural results of this exercise.

    Once you find that you have developed thiscommanding voice, you should begin practicingan art known to singers the world over. This issaying the musical scale, do, re, me, fa, so, la, t i,do. Youdo this using the musical tones of each ofthe notes of the scale. Now you should divideyour exercise time sothat you spend about half ofyour time saying the vowels, and the other halfofyour time saying the notes ofthe musical scale.Three months good work at this exercise, andyou should have wellbegun developing a powerfulmagician's voice. Use this voice in your daily life.It isanother asset that you may use successfullyfor everyday purposes. You will discover thatpeople will respond to you better when you speakto them, regardless of the subject of yourconversation.

    You should also master the control of thevolume aswell asthe modulation ofyour speech.Youneed to be able to softlywhisper, aswell astobellow out in the kind of over loud voice thatdrill sergeants use to drill troops. Both variationsin tone and volume have their uses, and in timeyou can develop good control over both.

    LISTENINGAND AWARENESSYouare probably well aware that most people

    do not listen to what other people are saying.Instead oflistening towhat others say,most peopleare busy formulating an answer to what theybelieve that they are hearing, or have heard. Asyou develop yourself, this unfortunate fact willsoon become painfully obvious to you. The moreintently you pay attention to someone, the moreyouwill begin to hear and understand both whatthey are actually saying, and subtly begin to hearwhat they are proposing to say.

    Having taken the trouble to master the art ofclearing your mind ofclutter, you should be wellaware that for almost all people, there is acontinual conversation going on in thebackground of their mind. Ifyou listen to otherpeople intently, while holding your own mindblank, you can often begin to hear this internalconversation. Initially it isheard not somuch inwords, asreceived in impressions and feelings thatyou receive from the one you are speaking to.

    The simple act of pausing before you speak,asyou consciously begin to formulate your answerto someone, will allow you to begin to listen tothe impressions you receive concerning what theother person's internal mental chatter isall about.From these impressions you can usually formulatea more definite and valid answer to the person,answering not only their spoken, but also theirunspoken words.

    Being aware that there are usually two ormoreconversations going on in most people's minds atthe same time gives you the advantage of beingable to understand exactly what it is that theyrequire, and whether or not it will actually bepossible for them to accept what you propose tothem. This isa function ofyour listening intentlyto them. You should practice listening intently

    to other people in your everyday conversationswith them, aswell as when you are in a positionto overhear conversations between people. Itwillalwaysbe to your benefit to take the opportunityto gain practice in this art. Naturally, you willdiscover that this practice in listening to others isofgreat benefit to you in your daily life aswell.

    Having completed all of these exercises, youhave probably discovered that you can now see,hear, and even infrequently smell, the non-physical world while you are still in your physicalbody. The slight mental shift required to do thisusually presents itself to you without any difficultybefore you reach the voice exercise in chapterXIII. If it has not, stand looking out a window,and will yourself to see the non-physical image,then will yourself to see the physical image. Youwill soon discover that you have developed a

    willed control over which of the two images youmay see at any time.

    In some cases,you may wish to switch rapidlyfrom seeing one image to another. This takes somepractice, but i t may be also accomplished. Ifyouwalk in your physical body around the city blockor area that you live on, you can soon learn tomake the change from seeing the physical toseeing the non-physical rather rapidly. Like allelse, this takes practice to develop and perfect ,but it isanother talent well worth developing.

    The path ofdeveloping yourself asa magicianhas been long, and probably quite difficult for you.Once you have completed these exercises, youhave attained, and that iswhat actually matters.Now you have developed some really usefulmagical abilities, what can you do with them?Well, for one thing, it will now be extremelydifficult for anyone to tell you an untruth. Youcan tell ifsomeone is lying to you or not based onwhat you perceive of their internal conversationas they speak to you. When lying, the internalconversation always widely conflicts with thespoken words.

    Youshouldread and think through the spellor ritualjust exactly as you might wish to perform it,concentrating your attention on it in the sameway.Bythe time you have reached the conclusion ofthespell or ritual, you will immediately be able to see ifthat spell or ritual will actually have the effect thatyou want itto have. Ifitdoes, you can use that spellorritual however you may wish to do so.

    Now when you actually perform any spell orritual of your choosing, concentrate all of yourattention on doing it, performing it with singlemindedness of purpose and without wavering atall from what you are doing. When you havecompleted the spell or ritual, release the work outinto the universe, turning away from thinkingabou
