horrible condition and are willing to invest more money to build and
maintain better roads, according to a Michigan Chamber of Commerce
poll released today.
“Increased funding to fix the roads and improve public transit is
necessary to keep Michigan moving forward and this poll shows solid
voter support for a major investment in transportation,” said Michigan
Chamber President & CEO Rich Studley.
According to the statewide poll, conducted by Marketing Resource
Group (MRG), Michigan voters consider the condition of Michigan
roads and bridges second only to jobs and the economy as the most
important issue facing the state. The poll also found 80 percent have
changed their driving habits, and half of the voters have either
damaged their car or are personally aware of someone who has
damaged their car because of the road conditions.
“Eighty-two percent of Michigan voters think the current condition of
roads and bridges is bad,” noted MRG President Tom Shields, who
conducted the poll. Continued on page 8

“A vast majority of voters believe Michigan is not
spending enough to maintain our roads, and there is
solid support for spending an additional $1.8 billion
per year on road funding.”
Support for the additional funding was consistent
across party lines with Republicans (59 percent
support to 39 percent oppose), Democrats (71
percent support to 25 percent oppose), and Ticket
Splitters (72 percent support to 23 percent oppose).
“There are no Democrat potholes or Republican
potholes, there are just a lot of big potholes that are
becoming giant potholes,” Studley noted. “Now is
the time for lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to
work together to pass a broad and comprehensive
plan to fix the roads – and there is strong support
among voters to do just that.”
Other key findings of the statewide poll include:
• 95% of the voters are concerned that the
condition of the roads will damage their car.
• 75% of likely voters think the current level of
spending on roads is too low.
• 72% favor Michigan spending an additional $1.8
billion a year for the next 10 years to maintain and
improve roads and bridges.
68% are willing to pay at least an additional $10

and replace it with an oil company distribution fee

A survey of 600 likely voters was conducted by live

percent of respondents were interviewed via cell-

Holiday Pay
Q. How Does Holiday/Vacation Pay Affect Unemployment Benefits? A. If an unemployed worker is entitled to vacation or holiday pay, these types of payments may be used to reduce a worker’s unemployment benefits.
Holiday and vacation payments reduce unemployment benefits by 40 cents for every dollar paid up to a claimant’s weekly benefit amount, and by one dollar for payments equal to or greater than the weekly benefit amount — up to 1.6 times the weekly benefit amount. If holiday or vacation payments exceed 1.6 times the claimant’s weekly benefit amount, there is no entitlement to unemployment benefits for the period the holiday or vacation pay is paid or allocated. In order to ensure claimants receive their proper unemployment benefits, employers should report the gross amount of the holiday or vacation pay and the period to which it is allocated to the Unemployment Insurance

CENTURY 21 is pleased to announce the addition of two
new sales associates to their team. Local residents,
Thomas Mili and Adam Taivalkoski have both joined the

Local agent, Tom Mili was born in Ontonagon and lived in
Greenland and Livingston County for a time, returning to
the Upper Peninsula in 1982. He has owned income
producing properties since he was 22 years old, and
always had an interest in sales. He attended Finlandia

What’s Happening for Parade Of Nations 2014?
For our 25th year, the theme is “Around the World in 25 Years – Parade of Nation’s Silver Jubilee”. The date is
Saturday, September 13th , and we are moving things along and encouraging those wishing to participate to do the
same. Parade, booth and performance applications can be completed electronically at:
http://www.mtu.edu/international/events-programs/parade-nations/get-involved.html . Our logo has been
approved and will appear on posters, t-shirts and other promotional materials. This colorful logo with its silver
glitter on black t-shirts will be eye catching.
What’s New?
This year will be the first year that we will be hosting a homecoming for international alumni from MTU. Meet and
greets and other programs will be provided. This should also provide additional revenue for the area’s tourist
interests. In addition, PON events and programs will be scheduled during the week preceding the main date of
Sept. 13. One example already confirmed is the speaking engagement of Mahatma Gandhi's great grandson, Dr.
Arun Gandhi.
Several world class professional headline acts are being considered, a Chinese circus from Branson and an African
percussion troupe from Washington D.C. Both are award winning shows that have toured extensively both in the
US and overseas. Whoever is selected will perform during the parade, on the Dee stage and during an evening
show in the Rozsa. We are open to linking this show with a major sponsor who would like the maximum exposure
this will provide. If you are interested, please inquire.
Further collaborations are being sought with Northern Michigan University, Gogebic Community College and
Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College to expand and build on the years of mutual PON cooperation that
Finlandia University and Michigan Tech have enjoyed.
