Quote of the Week"I was damn near in tears watching her run. It was the most inspiring race I've seen an American

run since Joanie (Benoit Samuelson) at the (1984) Olympics."-- Greg Meyer, quoted by Jo-Ann Barnas, Detroit Free Press, April 27, 2011, p. 3B.

Running Fit Honored as One of the 50 Michigan Companies to Watch, by Art McCaffertyRandy Step and Steve Angerman, co-owners of Running Fit, will be feted tonight by the State of

Michigan and Governor Snyder.

Running Fit was chosen because they have grown over 33% since 2009 and because of the partthey have played in new job creation. All aspects of their company have made this possible includinggrowth in their 7 retail stores, the 23 events they produce (including 3 triathlons and several marathons)and their event timing division.

Their growth can be attributed to the loyal running community they have created in Michigan, runners who choose to buy locally and keep the money in our state.http://companiestowatch.org/index.ctw?page=honorees&honoreeYear=2011&-session=ctw:451541920a673284C0TlW3435FCC

Running Network's Mr. Ubiquitous - Boston (April 14 - 19) Mr. Ubiquitous, aka Gary Morgan, reports:

"Hello EveryoneWhat a week it was at Boston. It truly was an exciting time

there as I was there for six days to see all kinds of things goingon involved with the marathon. Who knew that it was going toturn into one of the most exciting days in marathon history. Icame into Boston on Thursday and picked up my presscredentials at the historic Copley hotel. This is really a cool placethat has a black lab as their mascot. He's a real hit with the hotelguests and kids. I went to the BAA (Boston Athletic Association)media conference and they discussed the new registrationprocess for next year and other aspects of the race. It can bechecked out on their web site http://www.BAA.org. The BAAalso has a new woman president, a first for them and a newslogan: “This isn't your fathers BAA.” They also started a newhalf marathon last year and a new 10k this year. So the BAA isbecoming a year round organization with other races. Theyintroduced the marathon’s oldest runner, Clarence Hartley, 81 yearsold, a Korean War Veteran and Aaron Hummel, the winner of theIraq military marathon that was run on the same day as Boston lastyear. Both ran the marathon this year.

Thursday evening was the kickoff reception for the marathon atthe world famous Cheers pub. Race officials and sponsors werethere to celebrate another opening round of the Boston Marathonweekend. It was a fun event and many of us had to go to see whereNorm sat during the Cheers sitcom. The plaque is still there. I tookthe T to my friend’s house in Brookline. Riding the T is like ridinga trolley subway. It’sl ike going back in time but still here in thepresent.

Friday morning I arrived late to the elite athlete press conferencebecause the T was running late. I took some pictures and asked afew questions then left for Children's Hospital to visit somechildren who have been there a while. Kelly Flathers, an Olympictrials qualifier, and Brendan Donavan from the biggest loser werethere interacting with the children. The children were coloringbooks and making plastic medals. It was fun playing with themand they liked my orange Brooks shoes. This was organized byAthletes for Hope, an organization that connects athletes andcommunity events together around the country.

I went to the expo after that to volunteer and handed out race shirtsto the participants. It was cool watching runners get their packetsand try on their shirts. It’s always exciting to go to a race and getyour number and packet-- especially at a big race like Boston. Theexpo was great with lots of free samples, cool products and racesto check out. It definitely hypes up the race. All of the volunteersgot green nylon jackets; I thought I was at the Masters golftournament. What’s great about volunteering is you meet lots offun people having a great time giving back to society in manydifferent organizations.

Saturday morning I went to one of my favorite media events, theChampions Breakfast. They honor past champions from themarathon and give out the bib numbers to the defending champions. This year they honored Rob DeCastella (1986) Australia, Ron Hill(1970) England, Alvaro Mejia (1971) Columbia, and Jean Driscoll(eight time wheeler champion in the 1990's) USA. They showedvideos and pictures from the days when they won. Then last year’schampions, Robert Cheruiyot, Teyba Erkesso, and wheelers, ErnstVan Dyke, and Wakako Tsuchida were handed their bibs andeveryone took lots of photos. I got interviews with some of them andduring the program they always introduce other champions in theroom such as Bill Rodgers, Joan Benoit Samuelson, and Greg Meyer.Listening to the champions from years ago to those of today is likethe difference between night and day. The world moves on and it wasa great event held in the Oval room at the Copley hotel.

I went out on Boylston street and did video on the children runningthe mile relay. I just got the last group of kids and it was exciting. Then I followed everyone into the big tent as elite Adidas athletessigned photo cards for them. Olympian Todd Williams from MonroeMichigan was there and he handed out the awards to the top teams inthe Mile relay. It looked like there were over 300 kids running in therelays. It always fun to watch youngsters run.

I went over to the expo and checked it out a little more todaysince I had more time since I wasn't volunteering. Met up withsome friends from Brighton, Chris and Michelle Ford. Chris hasrun Boston before but this was Michelle’s first time and she was totally geeked to be here. For youambitious runners there's the Boston-Big Sur combo: 400 entry's to run Boston and then a week laterto run Big Sur. Sounds like fun and a true adventure. Marathon Tours was very crowded because a lotof runners want a destination race, especially in Africa. I've run three races there and it's always beenfantastic. While I was there the Ambassador from Kenya was there. The Kenyans love Boston. Not justbecause they win but because to them the Boston Marathon is the greatest race in the world to them. Itwas exciting at the expo with lots more to come.

That evening I went to the Mayor’s reception at the Copley. This was a big-time event as sponsors anddignitaries were in attendance. Luckily I brought some dressy clothes. Jeans and tee shirt aren't alwaysappropriate.

The mayor talked, some awards were given out, and the food, drinks and band topped it off nicely. Meta few of the sponsors and they always have a good story of how they got involved as sponsors. One ofthem was the owner of the trucking company called Gentle Giant that moves equipment and supplies allover the course. He had some interesting stories to tell me about his involvement in the race. So muchgoes into a big event that you could write a book about it.

From there I went to the Runners World party a few blocks away. That’s always a fun event to get toalso. I saw Bart Yasso and Amby Burfoot along with lots of other notable faces at this event. Midnightcame and I called it a night.

Sunday morning came and it was raining. I was planning on jogging in the BAA 5k and doing somevideo filming of that and the Invitational Mile. I decided I didn’t want to get soaking wet along with mycamera, so I just stayed in bed. I went to downtown Boston at around noon and I asked about themorning events and I was told that it quit raining just as the 5k started. The numbers for the 5k weredown a little from the rain but the winning times were great. The mile times were slow because therunners were being careful running on slippery pavement around corners. I've run the 5k and it's a funevent that goes through the Back Bay of Boston. It's exciting to watch milers run around a city block ata quick pace. I can't be everywhere plus I knew I had a long day coming on Monday. I bought somebody glide at the Adidas store and I waited 30 minutes to pay for it. Runners were in the store buyingmarathon gear like there was no tomorrow. My back was killing me from walking around the streets ofBoston for the last few days, so I went and to a Bikram Yoga class. What a home run; I could move myback around. I'm ready to run the marathon tomorrow.

I went to the Pasta dinner at City Hall. Pasta dinners and festivalsare always fun the night before a marathon. They had clowns, balloons, and music and there was lots of food, drink, dessert andgoodies to take home after eating. I saw my friends from Oregonthat I ran the Hood to Coast race with last year along with Chrisand Michelle Ford. Plus, I met a runner who had come all the wayfrom Hawaii. That’s what’s really cool about the pasta dinner, youmeet runners from all over the planet. Went back to my friend’splace in Brookline and got ready for the big day.

4:30 am comes early on Monday morning. I get ready, walk 10minutes to the T station, catch the T and arrive in Boston at 6 am.Hop on the media bus at 6:45 for that hour bus ride toHopkinton. It helped we had a police escort get us there. I rested on the busfor another hour thinking about taking the bus back to Boston instead ofrunning 26 miles. I was tired running around; doing media work wearsyou out for running the race. That’s why none of my media friends runraces anymore. I come to my senses and realize I don't want to miss allthe fun of running to Boston. That's why I can write all these crazy storiesbecause I'm part of the crowd. I hustle up to the start and film all thecrazy things going on at the start line. It's a festival there. They playAmerica the Beautiful, I get the mobility impaired athletes start, then thewheelers start. I get an interview with a little girl who told me theKenyans came to their school in Hopinkton and talked about running inAfrica. She said she wanted to run the marathon someday. That waspretty cool.

I get my picture taken at the sign that says "It all Starts Here" forthe Boston Marathon. Most runners don't get to see this becausethey are at the High School 3/4 mile away at the Athletes’ Villageand when you start the race you don't have time to be sightseeing.I was starting in the 3rd wave so I had time to do this plus I'mrunning for fun. I finally make it back to Athlete Village at theHigh School. This is drop off point and hang out spot until you goto the start. There are big tents, food, drink and music until youleave for the start. It's a circus.

This is so different than when I ran it in 1981. Somehow, then, wegot ride to the start, found a tree to do our thing, then ran up tothe start and took off. There were only 7000 runners back then. Four hours later all the runners weredone. Then it was cleaned up and you didn't know there was a race. Now it's a festival for a week. It'sall good. I finally get rid of my gear bag and head for the start. I get to my coral 3 minutes before thegun goes off. It takes 4 minutes to hit the start and head for Boston. It truly is exciting to be running itagain for the 9th time. It’s a fantastic day to run, sunny and 50 degrees. The crowds are great along theway as they cheer on the runners. I love giving high fives to spectators and it's cool they give us orangeslices to keep us going. It's always fun seeing the Wellesley College women at 12.5 mile mark as theywant the runners give them a kiss as they go by and I'm always happy to do that. You can hear them amile away. At 16.5 miles the Newton Hills start; there are five of them and I crest that fifth one at the21 mile mark where the Boston College students cheer us on and offer the runners a beer. From there

you know it’s all down hill to the finish. When I get to Citgo sign Iknow there’s just one more mile and I'm hurting like every otherrunner. We can't wait to get on Boylston street and have the crowdcheer us on to the finish. I got my medal and was glad to havefinished the race. I didn't know about the world record or thesecond place finish of Desi Davila. When you're out there runningyou just want to run well and finish. I went to the Lenox hotel thatoverlooks the finish line. I see the stragglers coming in and I see theclock is being taken down just after going over 6 hours. A year ofplanning for this fantastic event and 6 hours later its over and thecleanup begins. As race director Dave McGillivray says "Don't besad when the race is over, because there's always next year."

Three hours later I go to the Awards ceremony and get all the details of what happened while I wasout there running. The Kenyans were ecstatic about a double victory and a world best. We Americanswere ecstatic about Desiree Davila placing second and coming so close to winning. The age groupawards had some fantastic times as the tailwind helped many runners to have PR's. The Japanese crowdwas excited to see a double win in the wheeler division—a proud moment for Japan in these toughtimes. This truly will be remembered as one of the greatest marathoning days in history.I got a great interview with Desiree right after the awards ceremony and she described the race to a tee.You can see it on http://www.Runningnetwork.tv.

I went to the after race party a few hours later and it was awesome. They brought out the top tenfinishers for the men and women. A few of them said a few words about their races and the party wason with some high energy music and dancing. Videos showed the race while the party was on full tilt. What a way to finish off a fantastic day.

Went to the Press conference the next day as they presented the winners their checks and special medalsto the men’s winner because of his course record and world best and the women’s wheeler because sheset a new course record. The men’s winner got $225,000-- $150,000 for winning, $50,000 for a worldbest, $25,000 for a new course record. Women’s winner received $150,000. Women’s wheeler received$25,000-- $15,000 for winning, $10,000 for the course record. Men’s wheeler winner received $15,000.I put this out there because everyone always ask me how much did the winner get? Now you know.Desiree Davila and Ryan Hall (who had a great race, running 2:04:55) joined the press conference andanswered some questions about their race. American distance running is looking pretty awesome afterthis marathon. With just 16 months before the London Olympics it's getting to be exciting. It was aphenomenal time here in Boston and I'll be on the road as the world adventure series continues.
