5. FUNDAMENTAL BELIEFS

TheMichiganConferencerealizesthattheNADrequirementforthe28FundamentalBeliefsstatesforthecandidateto:“Prepareatwo-paragraphsummaryoneachofthe28fundamentalbeliefs.”However,afterdecadesofteachingMasterGuidecandidateswefindthisexerciseinsufficientfortrainingleaderstobepreparedforthequestionstheywillfaceinthecourseoftheirministry.

Asministryleadersworkingwithchildrenandyouth,MasterGuideswilloftenbeaskedtoexplaincertainaspectsofwhatSeventh-dayAdventistsbelieve.Previousrequirementshadaskedforapaperororalpresentationoneachfundamentalbelief;howeverinourexperience,whatwegenerallyreceivedfromtheMasterGuidecandidateswasawonderfulabridgementofthebookWhatAdventistBelieve.Whilethismaybeanilluminatingexerciseforpersonalgrowth,itdoesnotoptimallypreparethecandidatetotakeadvantageoftheopportunitiestosharetheirfaithwiththeyoungpeopleintheirministry.

Themostopportunemomentsarenormallyfoundinthatquiettimearoundacampfire,orsomeothersuchsetting,whenayoungpersonasksadirectquestion.Whenfacedwithsuchaquestion,youhaveabouttwominutestomakeanimpactfulstatement.Inthosetwominutes,youbetterhavemorethanjustfactsandBibleverses.Studieshaveshownthatfactsalonedonotconvictpeopleoftruth;ratherfactsassociatedwithpersonaltestimonyisamuchstrongermotivatorforyoungpeopletounderstandtheimportanceofachurchdoctrine.IfyoucansharethedoctrineandwhyitaffectsyourpersonalrelationshipwithJesus,youhaveamuchgreaterchanceofimpactingtheyoungperson’sdecisionprocess.
