"In winter I get up at nightAnd dress by yellow candle-light.In summer quite the other way,I have to go to bed by day.

I have to go to bed and seeThe birds still hopping on the tree,Or hear the grown-up people's feetStill going past me in the street.

And does it not seem hard to you,When all the sky is clear and blue,And I should like so much to play,To have to go to bed by day?"- Robert Louis Stevenson, Bed in Summer

===========================================BOB KURAS & MANITOU PASSAGE: By Jack Berry===========================================Homestead Resort owner Bob Kuras finally has what he wanted in the nearly 30 years since hebought “America's Freshwater Resort” -- an 18 hole golf course.

“We kind of put it on the back burner,” Kuras said of closing a 15-year battle in 2001 to build acourse by the Crystal River that flows into Lake Michigan from the Homestead.

A “happy convergence” of events has resulted in Manitou Passage Golf Club, a name that is, toborrow a phrase, Pure Michigan. And the name came last fall when Kuras's son, Jamie, was up onthe eighth tee, the highest point of the property, and the leaves were down.

“He came in and said 'Dad, I think there's a view of the water from the eighth tee,'” Kuras said. “Ididn't believe him but I've had to eat humble pie.”

With the trees bare of leaves, the Manitou Passage appeared, the Lake Michigan channel betweenNorth Manitou Island and Pyramid Point of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

And with that, the Arnold Palmer-designed King's Challenge Golf Club, which opened in 1998,became Manitou Passage Golf Club. The logo features the tall dune of the island, the water, andShoal Point lighthouse.

Kuras's “happy convergence” started when King's Challenge was for sale. It's 10 miles from theHomestead, just off scenic M-22 in Leelanau County and on the backside of the Sugar Loaf ski areathat closed 10 years ago.

Kuras said a small number of friends, “all good players, guys who wanted to get involved and see acourse that would help Leelanau County,” joined in to buy the course in May, 2009, not needing orlooking for an immediate return on the investment.

Kuras is the leader and he is a hands-on leader in the tradition of Northern Michigan's granddaddy ofresort development, the late Everett Kircher of Boyne USA. He ordered a bigger directional sign at M-72 and Maple City Rd., the main route out from Traverse City. He looked at many Web sites beforedesigning the site for the Homestead and Manitou Passage.

The course was a good one but it was a jewel that needed some cutting and polishing. Now it's aknockout. Eric Wiltse, whose father, Ray, was Palmer's chief of design when the course was built, came up from Florida and bunkers were reworked, some reduced, others moved closer to greens. Treeswere cut and some were added. Drainage was improved in two troublesome wet spots. A dangerousdownhill cart path on the eighth hole was rerouted.

Kuras ordered a fifth set of tees, gold, and made the five sets of tees on every hole equilateral. “Iwanted something distinctive, different from the way they were and from our competitors. They set upthe shot very well, tell you where you should be going,” Kuras said, and it has resulted in a clean, crisp look.

The gold tees measure 4,761 yards and basically are senior tees. The red tees are 4,733 yards. Theother tees are black, 6,724, blue 6,284 and white 5,809.

Moving and squaring all the tees was a major job and one of Kuras's partners is Brent Wadsworthwho built the largest golf course construction company in the world. Wadsworth has built more than800 courses and worked for the top designers.

“Brent bought a condo in the Homestead in 1972 and he and his wife have been good friends since. He's also built a house on Little Traverse Lake so I can drive two miles and get his advice,” Kurassaid.

The course was the only thing that needed cutting and polishing. The clubhouse, stone and cedarshake roof, has been upgraded, there are pictures of Palmer throughout, a copy of his fourth roundscorecard when he won the U.S. Open at Cherry Hills, pictures of his four Masters Tournamentvictories, a letter signed with the initials D.D.E., as in Dwight David Eisenhower, a Palmer neighbor inPennsylvania after Eisenhower left the White House. Arnie's Grill is another upgrade.

All the landscaping has been improved, from the entrance in, accent on flowers, a neat patio withtables overlooking the water-guarded 18th green – and the hole has been lengthened to a par fivewhich is a hit with Logan Price, the long-driving golf professional who can go for it in two. “If youdon't make it, you get heckled,” he said, laughing.

Kuras also had a cart area built but it isn't a typical “cart barn.” It's open on all four sides with acedar shake roof and can be turned into a pavilion for parties and outings.

Kuras's hands-on approach extends to the way visitors are treated. He said he and his son visited fiveupscale courses around the country in the spring and he came back disappointed with the lack ofpersonal touch.

Page 5: Michigan Golf News, July 2, 2010

“Only two of them had bag attendants when we drove in. No one said 'Welcome' or 'Thanks forcoming' or 'How did you like it?' when we paid or when we left.”

That isn't likely to happen at Manitou Passage, another polished jewel for Northern Michigan.

===================================================GARBER WINS 99TH MICHIGAN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP===================================================Surrounded by a near-record crowd of family, friends and club members, 18-year old Joey Garber ofPetoskey won the 99th Michigan Amateur Championship at Oakhurst Golf & Country Club, 2 & 1over Eric Lilleboe of Okemos.

Garber took control of the match right out of the gate by winning the first three holes.

“It’s all about getting into the moment and getting the lead,” said Garber. “He’s (Lilleboe) a goodplayer and he played everyone really well this week. “My caddie (Jimmy Dewling) and I had a gameplan before I teed off on the final match to turn at all square and then start my push on the back. I’veplayed holes 10 through 18 really well this week. I knew those holes had to be where I took the lead.”It didn’t go exactly how Garber had planned, because Lilleboe won three holes in a row to go 1 upafter 9 and kept the lead until hole #12 when Garber won the hole to bring the match back to allsquare. Garber proceeded to win hole #13 with a par while Lilleboe bogied it. It was a seesaw matchuntil Garber went 2 up on hole #16 and he held onto the lead on #17 to win the final match 2 &1.

“He deserved to win,” said runner-up Lilleboe. “We’re friends, we’ve played together a lot up northand he’s a really good player. I just finished up my senior year at Ferris State University and my lastamateur tournament will be the U.S. Amateur Qualifier at Boyne – The Heather Course on July 22before turning professional this fall."

Garber has won four GAM Championships in the last four years.

“In 2008, I won the GAM Tournament of Club Champions and I won the Michigan Junior AmateurStroke Play Championship in 2008 and 2009. I really wanted to win this championship; it’s the mostimportant tournament in the state.”

Garber is also the third youngest player ever to win the Michigan Amateur Championship. The secondfamous amateur ever to live, Chuck Kocsis won it in 1930 at the age of 17 and Korey Morhoney wonit after just turning 18 in 2002.

Page 6: Michigan Golf News, July 2, 2010

Next up for Garber is playing golf for the the University of Michigan. Garber said this about hiswolverine friend Matt Thompson, "I'm excited to play with my good friend Matt Thompson andthankfully, I didn't have to play him in match play this week because he's a very strong player.

By winning the Michigan Amateur, Garber receives an automatic five-year exemption into theMichigan Amateur Championship, as well as The Western Amateur, Susquehana Amateur inPennsylvania, the Michigan Open and the GAM Championship. For more information and complete results, visit http://www.gam.org.

===================FRENCH LICK REDUX===================How has the 43rd PGA Professional National Championship, which concludes Wednesday, benefitedthe host French Lick community?"We have seen another spring in the step of so many volunteers who have longed to support this eventand bring the attention of the golf world to Indiana," said Steve Ferguson, chairman of the board ofCook Group, the owners of the French Lick Resort.

"It is great that we can show The PGA of America that we can recruit 750 volunteers, some fromaround the country, to be here and support this Championship. The people are proud of their rolesand proud to have this Championship here. We want this Championship to come back."

PGA Professional Dave Harner, the director of golf operations for French Lick Resort, said that oncethe Championship began, he and members of his staff had a big burden taken off their collectiveshoulders.

"You find yourself the most drained, the most over-extended, most frustrated person that has everlived, and once the first ball is in the air you are feeling the next minute how it all was worth it," saidHarner. "You are completely spent, but you realize when you pick yourself back up that this has beena tremendous experience and opportunity.

"I venture to guess that any big event, and the staff behind it, goes through the same feelings. We arehappy and proud that this Championship has gone so well."

====================BROOKWOOD REDUX====================

Art,

It was with some great personal pride that I read your update on Brookwood Golf Club. Great trackin it's day and glad to hear people still care enough about the course to work and raise funds towardsimproving it. The course always inspired those who played it. Brookwood hosted two MichiganOpen's in the 60's won by Michigan Golf Hall of Famer, Gene Bone. Also produced two MichiganAmateur Champions, Bill Barclay 1939, Fred Turner, 1952. It had many Genesee County Champions,Flint Amateur Champions, Flint Junior Golf Champions and has been a fixture in Flint golf for years.

Two small corrections, Brookwood was built in early 1933 or 1934 as legend has it. Joe Szilagyi waspart of a group who bought the course (formerly known as Glendale Golf Club) in early 1936, Joeultimately became the sole owner in 1938 until late 1963 when he sold it to IMA. They originallychanged the name due to the Kearsley Creek that runs through it and the many beautiful treesmentioned in Jenny's piece on Brookwood. Joe's son Bob, went on to run another couple ofsuccessful courses named Salem Hills Golf Club and Godwin Glen Golf Club with Horace Godwin formany years after.

In the immortal words of Paul Harvey..."and now you know, the rest of the story."

Best regards,

JS

Jim SzilagyiProud Grandson

Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Jim Szilagyi for this historical backgrounder.

==================================MCCAFFERTY AND MOORE MUSINGS ==================================We have given Dr. Minzey a week off from his column. He said we either had to do that or pay him.Sorry, Jack. In his column space this week, we are going to the vault to bring to you some lines thatTerry Moore and I submitted to Golf Magazine in 1978. We had published a book during that time, called "The Front Nine and Back Nine", a worst seller at the time. However, it was a precursor tothe launch of the Michigan Golfer in 1983.

These lines appeared in Oscar Fraley's Column in the 1978 May issue of Golf Magazine.

"Art McCafferty of Ypsilanti and Terry Moore of Grand Rapids, pass along these definitions, whichmay hand you a chuckle: Adieu, the reason for moisure on the morning greens; archangel, a greatwedge; chipmunk, a priest with a great short game, dimpled, the face of a golf ball before it breaksinto a smile; deuce, a golf term never used in Italy; goldenrod, Jack Nicklaus' driver; johnny on thespot, tournament relief stations; and lengthwise, player who makes the right club decision.

My favorite of your definitions fellers, is 'hitting fat', meaning when your drive hits a dissidentmember of weight watchers.."
