December 2010

“Keeping members up to date on changes in the DB2 Environment”

MDUG seminars usually feature topics for DB2 for z/OS and DB2 for LUW. As many companies utilize DB2 on the Z/OS and Linux, UNIX, and Windows platforms, members are encouraged to attend presentations that focus on both or either platform to expand their knowledge of DB2 across the OS spectrum as well as many features are common across the DB2 family. The upcoming seminar on December 9

th at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Novi features

two outstanding speakers. At the first session in the morning, Dave Proksch from IBM Corporation returns to MDUG to discuss “Information Governance - Protecting the Corporation and its Data”. Later in the morning, Paul Wirth also from IBM returns to discuss “DB2 V10 for z/OS”. In the afternoon there will be a DB2 news update discussion and then Paul Wirth will present an overview on “What’s New for DB2 Clients and Drivers?” It looks to be a great day of interesting DB2 technology topics.

TO REGISTER: Send an email to [email protected] with your name, your membership type, and if appropriate the number and name of additional attendees. Reservation deadline is the end of the day on Friday December 3rd. ATTENDANCE Fees: For MDUG members, the cost for attendance at the seminar is covered by the yearly membership fee. For Non-members the cost is $45 at the seminar, payment in either cash or check. Credit cards are not accepted at the door. MDUG - 3 - December 2010

Presentation Abstracts DB2 V10 for z/OS IBM DB2® for z/OS® is the leading enterprise data server, designed and tightly integrated with IBM System z™ mainframe to leverage the strengths of IBM System z, and to reduce total cost of ownership through process enhancements and productivity improvements for database administrators and application developers. New structures, such as the ability to make changes to data definitions without disrupting online performance, continue to enhance availability and scalability in DB2, and bottlenecks have been removed to ensure the position of DB2 as a performance leader. Enhancements such as pureXML™, extended SQL, additional features that continue to deliver unparalleled security and streamlined compliance, and enablement of high-volume transaction processing for new applications, DB2 for z/OS provides the core

What’s new for DB2 Clients and Drivers? IBM’s strategy is to remove the reliance on the DB2 Connect modules and replace DB2 Connect with the IBM Data Server Drivers or Clients. While DB2 Connect licenses (in the form of DB2 Connect license files) are still required, you can replace DB2 Connect modules with the IBM Data Server Drivers or Clients and receive equivalent or superior function. In addition, you can reduce complexity, improve performance, and deploy application solutions with smaller footprints for your business users. IBM has also simplified the configuration of clients and drivers by replacing the database directory with a single XML configuration file. Information Governance - Protecting the Corporation and its Data Information Governance is the orchestration of people, process, and technology to enable an organization to leverage data as an enterprise asset. Among the key objectives are: Establishing a culture recognizing the value of data/information as an enterprise asset; Defining processes and business rules for ongoing governance; Developing common and standard data domain definitions; Measuring, monitoring, and managing data quality; Ensuring effective compliance and regulatory support infrastructure. IBM offers an Information Governance solution called IBM InfoSphere Guardium. It allows users to have real-time data protection and regulatory compliance with Database Access Monitoring, Configuration Auditing, Vulnerability Assessments and PCI/SOX/HIPPA reporting accelerators. This talk will discuss Information Governance and how IBM Infosphere Guardium is used within a governance framework.

3. MDUG Membership

There are four types of memberships; Individual, corporate, vendor and shared.

Memberships are annual and run from January through December and allow for attendance at all four seminars. MDUG accepts payment directly in cash or check and through the mail by check. Checks should be made payable to Michigan DB2 User Group (MDUG). Credit cards are accepted only through PayPal and must be coordinated with MDUG and cover the additional cost of processing. Contact a MDUG Director at a seminar or through [email protected] for details. All memberships are contingent on payment of the annual membership fee Membership forms along with membership details can be downloaded from the MDUG web site www.mdug.org by clicking on the Membership and Fees, then clicking on the left side of the Home Page. Inquiries on the status of corporate/company memberships should be sent to the MDUG email box at [email protected] box at [email protected]. If you need an invoice for the year, email MDUG at [email protected], and one will be emailed to you. 4. Group Support

Volunteers are the heart of any non-profit group. This is especially true for MDUG. Without volunteers to handle the affairs of the group, the group wouldn’t exist. Group membership fees only provide enough income to cover the costs for holding the seminars, and others things such as the web site and the PO Box, which are required for the group’s operation. There isn’t enough income to pay someone to find speakers, pay bills, coordinate activities, etc.

As always MDUG needs more volunteers to keep operating. Volunteering is a good way to find out more about the group operations and expand your skills. If you can volunteer to support the group’s activities next year, please let us know. Many of the support activities can be done from your home or desk and many do not take more then a few hours a month. Even MDUG Board meetings can be done from your desk, as all meetings are held via telecom. A few of the areas where you could help out are: supporting the web

site, taking reservations, suggesting topics/speakers, management of the group emails, group coordination, providing onsite support at the seminar, handling evaluations, and speaker introductions. We hope you will talk to one of the red ribbon wearers at the seminar about how you can volunteer or send an email with your contact information to [email protected] asking where you can help out or just that you want to discuss volunteering with someone on the board. We will get back to you. Vendor Support News: Both IBM’s John Sheppard and BMC’s Mike Mahoney have moved on to other endeavors. We wish them well. We are awaiting feedback as to replacements from both IBM and BMC.

We are especially grateful to IBM’s for providing the speakers for this seminar.

Register at: email [email protected] prior to Noon on November 17, 2010. Abstract: The training/seminar will discuss many issues surrounding alternative table and index designs for performance and availability current with DB2 9 and 10 for z/OS. We will look at many different alternatives to help design tables and indexes for the best performance possible for the type of application process and how to achieve high availability. There are many issues to consider for high volume insert and update transactions, and a balancing act to be achieved for responsiveness to readers. Table issues such as denormalization, non-column attributes, indicator columns, repeating columns, derived data, aggregated columns, table flipping, identify columns, surrogate keys, horizontal and vertical partitioning. We will also look at issues with designing VLTBs (Very Large Tables) and XVLTBs (eXtremely Large Tables) – the rules have changed! Index issues such as
