“Keeping members up to date on changes in the DB2 Environment”

MDUG seminars usually feature topics for DB2 for z/OS and DB2 for LUW. As many companies utilize DB2 on the Z/OS and Linux, UNIX, and Windows platforms, members are encouraged to attend presentations that focus on both or either platform to expand their knowledge of DB2 across the OS spectrum as well as many features are common across the DB2 family. The upcoming all day seminar on March 8

th at the Crowne Plaza in Novi, MI features

two outstanding speakers. The morning sessions will be presented by Mark Rader of IBM. He will be covering DB2 and WLM and Enhanced Monitoring in DB2 V10. In the afternoon there will be presentations from Ken McDonald of BMC Software who will cover the Online Schema Revolution and the new Catalog and Directory Structure in DB2. It looks like it will be another good day of interesting DB2 technology topics.

TO REGISTER: Send an email to [email protected] with your name, your membership type (Corp, Vendor or Ind.), and if appropriate the number and name of additional attendees. Reservation deadline is on Friday March 2nd, but if there are still seats available reservations will be taken up until noon on Tuesday March 6

th.

ATTENDANCE FEES: For MDUG members, the cost for attendance at the seminar is covered by the yearly membership fee, so make sure to renew before or at the seminar. For Non-members the cost is $55 at the seminar, payment in either cash or check. Credit cards are not accepted at the door. Please see the Membership section below in regard to paying via credit card for memberships. 2012 Membership Fees: MDUG has increased fees for 2012 as costs for operation of the user group continue to increase. More details are provided below. MOST REQUESTED TOPICS: “DB2 Performance Tuning” and “New DB2 Releases” were the most requested topics based on the December 2011 seminar meeting evaluations. GROUP SUPPORT: There is always a need for volunteers to support the ongoing activities of the Group. Each year MDUG need new volunteers as board members retire and move on. Presentation Abstracts Presentation #1: DB2 and WLM

Abstract: Confused about what exactly the IBM z/OS Workload Manager (WLM) is, how it manages work on your system, and how it relates to IBM DB2? In this session, we review the WLM features, including the types of goals you can set for each service class, importance levels and work classification. This information is the foundation for understanding how IBM DB2 for z/OS uses WLM, including advanced WLM functions such as enclaves and application environments. We also explain the relationship between the different types of DB2 work and WLM. Presentation #2: Enhanced Monitoring Support in DB2 10 for z/OS Abstract: How can you take advantage of the dramatic changes in monitoring delivered in DB2 10 for z/OS? This session introduces the changes that allow you to: track performance at the statement level for static and dynamic SQL, feed statement metrics to performance tools, identify the SQL statements involved in deadlocks, timeouts or lock escalations, and monitor connections, threads and idle thread timeouts with greater granularity than a single set of DSNZPARM values. This introductory session includes suggestions on how you might use these features in your DB2 for z/OS environment. Presentation #3: The Online Schema (R)evolution

Abstract: The latest improvements in Online Schema capabilities introduced in DB2 10 for z/OS represent something more like a Revolution rather than an enhancement to the OLS Evolution capabilities we've been used to seeing in successive releases of DB2. For the first time DBAs can register the changes they wish to make and then implement them at a time of their choosing using an Online Utility rather than having the object concerned move into an Advisory Status which may cause serious performance issues or worse. This session will describe the new OLS capabilities, how to use them and some pitfalls which may not be immediately obvious when you read the new features list. Come and listen to the way of the future as far as making changes to your DB2 database structures is concerned. Session objectives are as follows:

• Explain the limitations in OLS capabilities provided in previous releases of DB2 • Describe what has been delivered in DB2 10 for z/OS with the new Deferred Alter

capability • Discuss how to use the new feature in a real life environment including overcoming

any pitfalls or gotchas that may not be obvious from the release notes

MDUG - 4 - March 2012

• Provide an Online Schema Change Checklist that delegates can use back at the ranch what’s still missing and what may be coming next (bearing in mind that I don't work for IBM!)

• Presentation #4: A new Catalog and Directory Structure in DB2 for z/OS

Abstract: For the second time in three releases of DB2 for z/OS we have a significant set of changes to the Catalog and Directory structure. At first the introduction of Unicode and Long Names in DB2 V8 look to be more critical as any application accessing the Catalog and Directory needed to change, but the changes in DB2 10 for z/OS are likely to equally important in other areas. Chief among the changes are the use of UTS objects and the removal of internal links, but that's not all that was changed. For the first time we can issue SQL against some Directory objects, and we also have Inline LOBs used in some tables, so this is a pretty significant set of changes in iot's own right and probably the second most significant (at least) since DB2 was first released back in the mid-1980's. This session describes the changes that have been made and how they may impact the way we treat and access the Catalog and Directory moving forwards. Objective 1: Which of the Catalog objects now use UTS Tablespaces and what does this

mean? Objective 2: Understand Links in the catalog and the implications of their removal Objective 3: How inline LOBS are being used in the Catalog Objective 4: What changes have been made the Directory? Objective 5: New Columns, Tables and other miscellaneous Catalog and Directory

changes in DB2 10 for z/OS

seminar or through [email protected] for details. All memberships are contingent on payment of the annual membership fee Membership forms along with membership details can be downloaded from the MDUG web site www.mdug.org by clicking on the Membership and Fees, then clicking on the left side of the Home Page. Inquiries on the status of corporate/company memberships should be sent to the MDUG email box at [email protected] box at [email protected]. Invoices were sent to members on record for 2011 in January 2012. If you or your company did not receive one or if you need an invoice for the year, email MDUG at [email protected], and one will be emailed to you. 4. Group Support

Volunteers are the heart of any non-profit group. This is especially true for MDUG. Without volunteers to handle the affairs of the group, the group wouldn’t exist. Group membership fees only provide enough income to cover the costs for holding the seminars, and others things such as the web site and the PO Box, which are required for the group’s operation. There isn’t enough income to pay someone to find speakers, pay bills, coordinate activities, etc.

As always MDUG needs more volunteers to keep operating. Volunteering is a good way to find out more about the group operations and expand your skills. If you can volunteer to support the group’s activities next year, please let us know. Many of the support activities can be done from your home or desk and many do not take more then a few hours a month. Even MDUG Board meetings can be done from your desk, as all meetings are held via telecom and usually not more than once a month. And supporting the group allows you to attend the seminars at no cost. A few of the areas where you could help out are: supporting the web site, taking reservations, suggesting topics/speakers, management of the group emails, group coordination, providing onsite support at the seminar, handling evaluations, and speaker introductions. We hope you will talk to one of the red ribbon wearers at the seminar about how you can volunteer or send an email with your contact information to [email protected] asking where you can help out or just that you want to discuss volunteering with someone on the board. We will get back to you. 5. Increase in Membership Fees for 2012/Operational Costs

Due to increased costs for the operation of the seminars, MDUG has had to increase membership fees for 2012 by 10%. Membership fees are available online at www.mdug.org under the “Membership and Fees” section. This increase will assist in bringing income in line with costs. As noted at the December 2011 seminar, the group has been using reserve monies to support the operation of the group over the last few years. Due to this, reserve monies have been shrinking. Additionally the group has continued to look at ways to reduce costs. During 2012, all seminars are planned to be held at only one site which has allowed the group to obtain better terms with the hotel.
