BACK IN THE USSR – ORCHESTRAL CONCERTProkofiev – Peter and the Wolf Tchaikovsky – Fantasy Overture “Romeo and Juliet”

Prokofiev’s perennial family favourite grew from a commission to write a musical symphony for children, introducing them to the instruments of the orchestra. Tchaikovsky’s Fantasy Overture takes the themes from Shakespeare’s play (a chorale for Friar Lawrence, the “furioso” style for the fighting between Montagues and Capulets and sweeping melodies for the lovers) and develops them into a thrilling orchestral masterpiece.

MY FAIR LADYThis much loved musical is based on George Bernard Shaw’s 1913 play “Pygmalion” and was made into the 1964 Academy Award-winning film starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison. Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower seller, is the subject of a wager by Professor Henry Higgins that he could teach her to speak properly and pass her off as presentable in high society. Though difficult and frustrating for both Eliza and Higgins at first, the lessons soon begin to work wonders, and produce results that neither predict.

CEZANNE PORTRAITS LECTURE BY GAYNA PELHAM

This autumn a fascinating exhibition opens at the National Portrait Gallery: Cezanne Portraits. However he also often painted other people in complementary pairs or in multiple versions. In this lecture, National Portrait Gallery lecturer Gayna Pelham, will place the exhibition in context with Cezanne’s other work and examine how his analytical approach came to be so influential and important for later Cubist and Fauvist artists.

The Parents’ Arts Society has two main aims. One of these is to arrange a number of social occasions to enable parents to meet each other and members of the Common Room in a relaxed and congenial atmosphere.

With this in mind, we organize events such as London walks, visits to art galleries, opera evenings, wine tastings, theatre trips and a formal May Ball. There are also long weekend trips to destinations such as the art galleries of Florence and, more recently, trips to Prague, Madrid, and Greece.

Our other aim is to give parents a chance to use the superb educational and cultural facilities of the School. Lectures are arranged on subjects encompassing the Sciences and Politics, as well as the Arts and Evening Classes are also a regular part of our termly programme.

We currently have over 1100 members and the vast majority of Tonbridge parents join the Society – while many decide to stay on as members after their sons have left. We very much look forward to welcoming you to our events.
