Miami University Club Tennis
A New Chapter in Miami Club Tennis
The 2010 - 2011 club tennis team consists of 82
players. 64 of these players are new members this year.
Practices began outside at the Hepburn Varsity tennis
courts in mid September and continued until the end of
October. The twelve courts were completely filled
during the Monday through Thursday practices from
five until seven o’clock. Since November, practices
have been held Mondays and Wednesdays from eight
until ten o’clock at the Riverside Tennis Center in
Hamilton. All of these practices induce an environment
in which all members work hard in preparation for the
frequent competitions while having fun at the same
time. Midwest teams that Miami competes with
include Illinois, Toledo, Michigan, Indiana, OSU, OU,
BGSU, and Dayton. Occasionally the
club tennis members gather on the
weekends for social events.

pulled out an impressive 4 – 1 victory over the
Bobcats. Freshman Caroline Bennett won the

On October 24th, Miami played Dayton and
Denison at Dayton. It took three and a half hours of
hard work to beat both teams. Denison was defeated
25-13 due to the wins of Jason Brunn at men’s
singles, Cecilia Boldrini at women’s singles, Adam
Schiller and Alex Brest at men’s doubles, and Brunn
and Boldrini at mixed doubles. Miami also beat
Dayton 22 – 20. The team was down 17 – 10 until
Mike Treneff captured the men’s singles 6 – 5 and

Jensen sealed the deal with a 6 – 2 win at mixed
doubles. With these wins, Miami remained
undefeated with a record of 3 – 0.
The first home match on October 30th was
filled with plenty of tennis. 18 players participated
with everyone playing at least two matches.
Both the A and B teams defeated Dayton
Zach Hyndman “El Pres”
The president of the 2010-2011 club tennis team is senior accounting major Zach Hyndman from Oregon, Ohio. At the age of 9, Zach decided that he was going to play tennis. He had come inside on a hot summer day for
his great-grandmother’s famous grilled cheese sandwich and a Pepsi when he turned on the TV and started watching Wimbledon. Sampras was playing Rafter at the time. Zach was so captivated by the match that he immediately called his mom at work and told her that he wanted to play tennis. Zach has played club tennis for Miami since his freshman year. The seniors/officers that year were supportive people who fully included him in the club. Zach remembers having a great experience at Nationals in North Carolina that year. He felt that the club had not been fully inclusive since then. So he decided it would be his number one goal to make the club the best that it could be his senior year. As president of the club, he wanted to show all of the underclassman, especially freshmen, how fun club tennis can be and for it to have a profound impact on their college experience. When asked what is his favorite thing to do in Oxford, Zach replied, “Sunday morning breakfast at Morning Sun Café. It’s cozy and I like reading The Miami Student over coffee while waiting for my delicious, organic food.” After graduation, Zach plans to travel throughout the United States. In June, he will work for Procter & Gamble as an associate manager in the Consumer Market Knowledge division. Zach’s hard work and profound contribution to the club will be missed and it will serve as a great model for future club tennis presidents to follow.
Player Spotlight: Rachel Hinman Senior marketing major Rachel Hinman has been an active participant of the club tennis team for four years. She is from Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and has been playing tennis since she was seven years old. Rachel chose tennis because her parents played and she was never interested in contact sports. Off the court, she is an avid traveler. Rachel spent one of her semesters abroad in Spain. Her dream is to one day go to South America. When asked what was her favorite restaurant in Oxford, she replied, “Patterson’s Café because they have the best breakfast food.” Even though Rachel will graduate in May, she will still continue her tennis.

and Katie Fidelholtz, and Jason Brunn and
Fidelholtz. The B team captured wins through the

Brest and Rachel Hinman. Both teams lost tight

At the Badger Classic at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison on November 5th and 6th, Miami
faced Northeastern, Western Illinois, Wisconsin, and
Dayton. In pool play, Miami defeated Western
Illinois 27 – 13, but lost to Northeastern 15 – 29 and
Wisconsin 16 – 27. Against Wisconsin, Miami
players Mike Goldman and Caroline Bennett played
hard fought matches to win their respective singles
divisions. After being placed in the Bronze bracket,
Miami ultimately lost to Dayton 20 – 24 in overtime.
Miami’s Midwest rankings for the fall season
stood at 2nd place on 10/31 and 3rd place on 11/30.
The club tennis team hopes to have a successful
spring season with some big wins. There are a few
out-of-state tournaments left in the season along with
some local competitions remaining to be scheduled.
