Zionist Federation, Vice President of the World Confederation of Unjted Zionists, past Hon. Treasurer of the SAZF, a member of the Board of Governors of the Tel Aviv University and a member of the Jewish Agency Assembly. As Chairman of Telfed, Morris Borsuk plans to explore additional avenues for increasing the finan cial resources of the Federation, so that more as sistance can be given to olim. He also has spoken of presenting a realistic picture of Israel to potential olim in South Africa and trying to make it possible for each one to visit Israel before deciding on aliya. He believes that a way must be found of keeping our shiihim in South Africa up to date on the actual conditions In Israel. Morris' wife, Pauline, was also active in Zionist af fairs in Johannesburg and is a past chairlady of the JWZL Oaklands Branch. The Borsuks have two daughters. Both live in Israel. Hertzei Katz, who held this position from 1978- 1982 made a significant contribution to the work and organisation of the S o u t h A f r i c a n Z i o n i s t Federation Israel office. An energetic and compe tent man who knows what he wants and how he wants things done, Hertzl's watchword is 'Kadima'. He introduced the Israel Committee's publication TELFED, and is presently chairman of its editorial board; he introduced the Luncheon Club which ran for many years at the Sinai Hotel; he started up a "New Blood Committee" in the hope that people co-opted on to this commit tee would eventually become members of the Ex ecutive — and, in fact, the Executive did benefit from the presence of a few members of the New Blood Committee. He also introduced Keren Telfed, a fund sup ported by S. Africans living in Israel, for the benefit of S. African oiim who require specific financial as sistance. In saying a big 'Thank you, Hertzei Katz' for his energetic and far-sighted leadership — we are hap py to add "le'hitra'ot* for Hertzei will continue to sen/e on the Telfed Executive and on some of its sub-committees. The practice of young Jews coming to Israel towork on a kibbutz or study on a kibbutz ulpan andthen returning home, has become regularprocedure. Telted recently tried to influence thissituation by organising Its first 2-day seminar forsingles on the subject of "Finding a Way to Stay."24 8. Africans aged 19 to 29 were taken to the Galllto visit a kibbutz, moshav, development town andarmy base. The second day included discussiongroups on educational opportunities In Israel andproblems faced by the new immigrant. A separatediscussion group was devoted to "The Inter-Relatlonshlps between Ethnic Groups In Israel."

"The seminar helped to consolidate a lot of theinformation which t had heard but wasn't sure aboutand it was very helpful to have so many specialistsavailable at the same time," said a young participantfrom Johannesburg, who works as a nurse at TelHashomer Hopsital and eventually wants to work asa nurse on a young kibbutz. The consensus wasthat the seminar was great and worthy of repetition.A number of participants expressed the desire toserve in the Sherut Le'am programme, to find permanent places on kibbutzim and to participate in aspecial Gadna programme.N E TA N YA ' S " C O F F E E C L U B "

Despite unrest, rising cost of living and politicalfriction, the 8. African families of Ulpan Ben Yehuda1962 feel that they have much to celebrate after 20years in Israel. A very happy and lively reunion wasrecently held at the Simon's home In Herzlia Pituah. The erstwhile new immigrants were justifiably proudof their contribution towards the rebuilding of thecountry and of their own personal achievements. Most worked their way towards the upper echelonsof their respective professions and voluntary andsocial work were not neglected.

The children who had played in the sands of BenYehuda Ulpan so long ago were there with theirsabra husbands, wives and babies.

Upon reviewing the last 20 years, the consensusof opinion was that it had not been easy, still wasn'teasy but certainly had been worthwhile.C A L L I N G S E A P O I N T O L D B O Y S

When I accepted the invitation to attend CAZO's19th Biennial Zionist Conference in Harare duringAugust, 1982, and to convey a message ofgreetings from the CAZO Israel Committee andTelfed, it was with mixed feelings. My immediatereaction was that it would be difficult to convey ameaningful Zionist message to a community that, during the past 5 years, had faced so much erosionin numbers. Estimates of the present aging Jewishcommunity indicate between 1600 to 1700 out of anapproximate total of 7500 at its peak. In any event,my feare proved groundless. From the moment Ientered the hall where, five years previously I hada d d r e s s e d t h e A l i y a S e s s i o n o f t h e W I Z OConference on the eve of my own departure onaliya, I was overwmelmed by a sincere and warmwelcome. It was as if time had stood still: the bondsof kinship that had always united us had not liieenweakened by time nor distance.

In spite of tremendous handicaps faced by thosew h o h a d m o u n t e d s u c h a C o n f e r e n c e u n d e rprevailing political circumstances, the attendance atthe various sessions surpassed the most optimisticprojections. Conference, under the guidance ofCAZO's President, Mervyn Hatchuel and Director-General Barney Katz, conducted all its businesswith customary efficiency and the executive's reporton activities over the past two years was a tribute totheir continued dedication to the Zionist Cause andIsrael. Two impressions stand out amongst themany that come to mind.

The first is that although the ranks of Zionist

Special credit is due to AviSament, our social convener, the Committee ando u r H a i f a O f fi c e .

As the crowd dispersed after midnight, when thelast hora had been danced, one heard several comments that this sort of function should be held moreoften. This, indeed, is a compliment to all thoseresponsible for an event which was both a socialand financial success.

As we go to press, news about Israel RugbyFootball Clubs activities appears in local presscolumns. It is therefore timely to introduce our rugbyreport with a round-up of the 24-member Israelboys' under-19 team (comprising members of theRa'anana and Kibbutz Yizreel youth clubs — manyof them S.A. olim) which recently returned from asuccessful 5-week goodwill visit to S. Africa. Thisvisit was privately arranged by the Western ProvinceMaccabi in conjunction with the South African Rugby Board, and was sanctioned by the Israel RugbyF o o t b a l l U n i o n .

South Africa is "rugby country" and the Israelside had to contend against teams which often included provincial or first league schoolboy players,in spite of this handicap, the Israel side acquittedthemselves very well even though their victorieswere in the main against Jewish Day School teams.

The full contingent included the following S.Afr ican ol im:— Selwyn Hare (Captain), DarrylE d e i s t e l n , G i l F r i e d m a n .
