End of first quarter is quickly approaching! The staff at MHS has been working at a fe-
verish pace to ensure that your students are keeping abreast of their studies and all the in-
credible activities offered. Homecoming week begins Monday, October 5, though I know
there are forces at work as we speak to make this a dynamic and engaging experience.
Please reinforce with your students that eligibility does apply to all activities during
Homecoming.
The staff and students at MHS were treated to renowned author and international
speaker Barbara Colorosa. She is the author of “the bully, the bullied, and the not so inno-
cent bystander.” She provided our kids and teachers with an interactive presentation in
the gym followed by a mini workshop for our student leadership organizations. Her mes-
sage of being kind and recognizing the difference between “telling” and “tattling,” giving
us guidelines before we hit “send”, and discussing strategies with us to stand up for our-
selves and others will help our folks make good decisions and keep everyone safe. Her
presentation also provided us with some clarity on what bulling looks like and how to deal
with it on an individual basis.
The school year is off to a great start. We have many new and engaging opportu-
nities for students to demonstrate leadership and get involved at every level. Please do not
hesitate to contact my office with any concerns, and if you see something that just doesn’t

Secretary/Attendance Office
The Athlete for the month of Oc-
tober is Katie Casebier. Katie is
a Junior here at Montrose High
School and is a multi-sport athlete participating in volleyball and
track. When asked what she likes most about high school sports
she said she loves the self challenge of being successful. Katie said
that she gets the best of both worlds as volleyball is more of a team
sport while track in more of an individual activity. This allows her
to compete in both a team dominated sport and a individual domi-
nated sport during the school year. I asked her if she had thought
about what she would be studying in college in two years. Katie did not yet have a specific
area she wanted to study, but she said she knows she wants to have a career that involved
working with people in some capacity.
Katie said that her favorite teacher at MHS is Mr. Scriffiny. She described him as infuriat-
ing but said that while this may seem crazy his type of teaching helped her really think for
herself and challenged her to think in new ways. She also mentioned one of our new
teachers, Mr. Herod, saying he was just awesome. Katie told me that both of her parents
were her greatest role models but cited her father, Todd, as her greatest role model when it
comes to the athletic side of her life. She said that he has always done a great job of coach-
ing her up on sportsmanship and challenging her to be not only the best athlete she could
be but person as well. Finally, I asked her if there was something that she could tell us that
most people didn¹t know about her. After a long pause she told me that she is pretty much
an open book and that she would have to get back to me on that one. What I see in Katie is
a very positive, intelligent, athletic young lady who leads by example and cares about not
only her teammates but Montrose High School as a whole. Thank goodness we get her for
another year after this one! Please check the schedule and come watch Katie and the #4
ranked in the state Indian Volleyball team at their next home match!!!

Guidance Office
Interested in taking the ACT or SAT?
The ACT is an achievement test, measuring what a student has learned in
school. The ACT has up to 5 components: English, Mathematics, Reading,
Science, and an optional Writing Test. You take the ACT Writing Test only if required or re-
quested by the college(s) you're applying to.
The SAT is more of an aptitude test, testing reasoning and verbal abilities. The SAT has only 3
components: Critical Reading, Mathematics, and a required Writing Test. SAT Subject Tests
are hour-long, content-based tests that allow students to showcase achievement in specific sub-
ject areas where they excel.

Special Olympics is getting off to a running start this fall. New this
year, we are planning the first ever community Haunted House, Octo-
ber 24, at MHS. We will also have Volleyball practice one day a week
at Cottonwood from 4 - 5 Pm. The all school bowling tournament
is at Rose Bowl Lanes, Oct 19th. Plus many more exciting activities.
There are several ways to get involved with Special Olympics. The
Project UNIFY club meets the second Tuesday during lunch to plan activities. Project UNIFY
class meets 7th hour and plans to finish the bottle cap mural, tie die shirts, make muf-
fins, and visit community sites. Everyone will be working on the Haunted House.
Each of our sports are unified, which means our teams are made up of both special education
and general education athletes. We are always looking for partners to augment our teams.
