Fountaine PajotFounded by Jean-François Fountaine and Yves Pajot in France in 1976,Fountaine Pajot is now the world’s leading manufacturer of cruisingcatamarans having built more than 2200 sail and power multihulls. With two state-of-the-art production sites in La Rochelle - the heart ofone of the world’s most important boatbuilding regions - Fountaine Pajotemploys an elite multidisciplinary team of more than 400 people and isrenowned for its continued investment in technology, productionindustrialisation, research and design.

Manufacturing

The construction of Fountaine Pajot catamarans includes verifications at everystage in conformity with ISO 9001. The fibreglass fabrics are checkedbefore use and each stage of lamination is followed by an inspection.Pressure during vacuum-gluing operations is continuously measured andthe quality of the result is systematically checked over the whole gluedsurface. The hardness of the composite is measured on each elementusing the Barcol procedure, and samples taken from each boat are kiln-tested in order to verify resistance to hydrolysis. The resistance to wear andweathering of the adhesives used for the lining and floors are also tested.

There is complete traceability of every unit that leaves the yard – arigorous system essential for subsequent maintenance. The company'stechnical department and engine manufacturers conduct sea trials on allboats to guarantee delivery in perfect condition.

Quality Inspections

When completed, the boat goes to the test basin where all of itsequipment is tested, and a sprinkler system checks the whole structure iscompletely watertight. For future reference, the technical departmentmaintains a comprehensive file on every vessel, which contains thedetails of all the materials and products used and all equipmentinstalled. Exact drawings of certain specific components are alsoarchived, as well as samples of the composite.

I.C.N.N Product CertificationAll Fountaine Pajot catamarans possess ‘EC Type’ I.C.N.N ProductCertification in conformity with European directive 94/25 CE. TheFountaine Pajot yard is also the first French boat builder to haveobtained ISO 9001 Quality certification for the entire production cycleof its vessels. This certification is an international standard designed toimprove customer satisfaction, ensuring the company continues to buildon its high standards of product and management procedures.

Safety

UnsinkabilityUnsinkability and the bulkhead structure inside Fountaine Pajot’scatamarans are key elements in their safety. Unsinkability is ensured byvolumes of foam placed in the forward and rear extremities of the hulls.

Foun

tain

e Pa

5

The watertight bulkheads in the stem of each hull provide total isolation;even after an impact causing a leak, only the forward compartmentfloods and the boat can continue to sail.

Fins

Fixed finsFor safety reasons the fins are completely separate components to thehulls – a feature that preserves and protects the watertightness of theboat in the event of a violent impact, and also makes them easier torepair or replace if required.

Shock-resistant finsThe use of fin keels over daggerboards provides numerous advantages:they are fixed and therefore require no manipulation; they give perfectprotection to drive shafts, propellers, rudder blades and hull bottoms inthe event of grounding; the absence of a daggerboard case savesspace; their wind-tunnel designed profiles give exceptional performanceand generate no turbulence or vibration.

Technology

Fountaine Pajot catamarans are built from a sandwich structure with aPVC foam core laminated under vacuum. Fountaine Pajot leads theindustry in this technology, consistently making significant investment inthe advancement of injection moulding technology to allow resin

injection at far higher pressure, delivering a lighter, stronger and moreconsistent product. For ultimate protection against hydrolysis, onlyisophtalic gelcoats are applied to hulls and decks by spray-gun. Also, the recent introduction of vinylester rather than polyester resins from thewaterline down further enhances strength and hydrolysis resistance.

Custom-made fabrics

Fountaine Pajot, in collaboration with Chomarat, has designed theirown fabrics with mono and multidirectional fibres in different weights inorder to optimise the weight and structure of the boat. In accordancewith the quality control process, for every model an exact sample ofeach fabric allocated to specific zones in the vessel is prepared andrecorded. The choice and composition of fabrics differs according tothe zone orientation to ensure fabric weights are optimised with respectto the stresses distributed throughout the boat.

Infusion Process

The entire structure of the boat is built up in layers of dry-bonded fabric.Under vacuum, the resin is able to penetrate into every empty space ina single operation, which affords multiple advantages: protection of theenvironment and anticipation of new regulations relating to solvents;improved working conditions, and a perceptible weight saving resultingin improved sailing performance.

Charter InvestmentCharter industry overview

The bareboat and crewed charter boat holiday industry is experiencingexciting growth both in Australia and throughout the world. From itsorigins in the Mediterranean and Caribbean in the early ’70s, thecharter industry has flourished with charter fleets successfully operatingfrom some of the world’s most beautiful sailing grounds. Approximately90 per cent of the boats operating in the charter fleets are not ownedby the charter companies. They are owned by private individuals whooperate their boats as a business to generate financial returns whilealso making use of their boat for regular holidays afloat.

The most common use is for week-long sailing holidays commonlyknown as “bareboat charters”, which operate within Australia andaround the world. “Bareboat” basically means chartering a boatwithout crew, which is the most popular option for clients with sailingexperience who want to explore a cruising area with their own friendsor family at their own pace.

Where do charter boats operate from?

Yachts can be chartered in areas such as Sydney Harbour, theWhitsundays, Fraser Island and Pittwater in Australia and other exoticcruising areas such as Tonga, Tahiti, New Caledonia, Phuket and KohSamui in Thailand, Langkawi in Malaysia, Greece, Turkey and Croatiain the Mediterranean, and the ever popular islands of the Caribbean.

Are catamarans popular charter boats?

Throughout the charter fleets worldwide, it is a fact that catamarans arebecoming the most popular charter boats. Apart from their fantasticsailing performance, hiring a catamaran offers the followingadvantages over chartering a monohull:

• Firstly, you can’t go past the abundance of extra space both aboveand below decks. Catamarans can comfortably accommodate up to12 people depending on their size.

• They provide a stable platform while sailing and when anchored. You experience little to no heeling over when sailing, and when atanchor there is no rolling around in anchorages guaranteeing apeaceful night’s sleep.

• Catamarans have a much shallower draft than monohulls which allowsanchoring close to shore in the most protected anchorages accessible.

• Ease of handling - if you can sail a monohull you can sail acatamaran. Most charter catamarans are set up with furlingheadsails and slab reefing mainsails (with lazy jacks) with all linesrunning back to the helm station and cockpit. They also have twoengines making manoeuvring a breeze.

What type of multihulls fit best into charter?

Multihull Solutions understands most of the world’s charter regions, itscharter operators and how they run their businesses. Some operators’management style may not suit you, while others are an ideal fit. Oftenoverlooked is that the boat you are considering to purchase may not suitthat particular operator’s customer base.

There are many issues to consider: boat size, layout, equipment, term ofcharter management, location, market conditions, operator’s targetmarket, and both the operator’s and owner’s expectations.

Above all, you need to determine whether your boat be considered a“full charter boat business” or a “hobby based business” by theAustralian Taxation Office. This is the most important first step. We canmake sure your boat is in the right location and with the most suitableoperator for your particular boat, so you can enjoy the business!

What we offer

The Multihull Solutions team has worked with the charter boat industryfor over 25 years and understands the position of both the boat ownerand the operator. Like any relationship, the most important initialconsideration is to find the right balance.

Multihull Solutions can assist you in sourcing and buying the right new orpre-owned multihulls to fit into a charter fleet. We have close relationshipswith the most reputable charter companies to ensure your asset is wellmaintained and looked after at all times.

We also offer a range of quality pre-owned charter yachts for sale. Wehave a wide range of catamarans for sale for either continued use in acharter boat holiday company or for placement into private use.

Multihull Solutions works with well respected finance company Finleaseto assist with understanding financing of your yacht, and OceanicInsurance Brokers to assist with boat insurance.

Summary

Buying a multihull for commercial operation is not a simple process, sowe strongly recommend you take your time and complete all duediligence. We also suggest that you don’t make a decision to buy basedsolely on price and your personal preferences - the boat is the businessand must be a compromise to ensure the it meets all requirements forbusiness success.

This “seatrial” ensures all systems are in proper working order before the vesselis delivered to Multihull Solutions.

On arrival in Australia or New Zealand, Multihull Solutions overseesthe transfer of the vessel from the ship to the dock and its launch intothe water, where our team then handles the full commissioning process(eg. standing of mast, fitting of sails, biminis, electrical and gascompliance etc). A Multihull Solutions sales representative thenmanages all inspections and sea trials with the client before handingthe vessel over.

If clients prefer to collect their vessel personally from the factory in Franceand make their own way back to Australia/ New Zealand, ex-factoryhandovers can also be arranged.
