I read about an interesting concept concerning our culture this fall, with the hopes of passing on a message of positivity, during times that seem to mirror a bleak reflection. The concept suggests that true satisfaction is found in cooperation and community, not in competi-tion. Imagine that your happiness is in direct proportion to doing what you love.

An example of this message comes from Hollywood Director Tom Shadyac, multimillionaire-turned mobile home owner. You see, several years ago Tom lived in a 17,000 square foot mansion in Pasadena, California. He often worked 14-18 hours a day to maintain his seemingly glorious lifestyle, which included luxury cars, a private jet and invitations to extravagant parties. And although our culture had defined and measured his life as “good,” he discovered that he was not happy. He shifted his life-style from 17 bedrooms in the mansion, to two in his Malibu, California mobile home, in search of relieving the pressures of his lifestyle on the fast track.

Our culture celebrates overachievement, competi-tion and even rewards being “number one.” By dismiss-

ing our culture’s definition of success, Tom Shadyac has discovered that finding happiness is proportionate to doing what you love and maintaining (having) only what you need. “Nothing in nature takes more than it needs,” so why should we?

Although the harvest of happiness concept may not guarantee satisfaction for everyone, I believe that our country’s present unstabilized status offers us the perfect opportunity to try taking only what we need, while genuinely seeking an abundance of contentment through giving and sharing. It’s sort of a free-pass trial period to move toward something less stressful, yet more satisfying.

Inside these pages you’ll discover an abundance of community involvement and ‘shift-ing’ through a variety of information about recycling programs, volunteers sharing time and knowledge with others and stories of personal success. We’re harvesting an abundance of great things in the Estrella community this fall. Scout Master, Jeremy Fuls, along with Estrella’s Yacht Club Coordinator, Jeff Beuthin spent a Saturday afternoon sailing on North Lake with boys in local Boy Scout Troop #599, as they complete requirements to earn their small boats and sailing merit badges.

The two-session process included sailing an obstacle course in the water, along with a crash recovery from an overturned boat. Prior to entering the waters of North Lake, the scouts were assigned classwork including writ-ten testing, knot tying and review of safety precautions and rules. Besides the fun of sailing, the process of earning these badges strengthens the boys’ knowledge in first aid, basic CPR and swimming ability, preparing them

by utilizing real-life situation skills, while working towards becoming Eagle Scouts.

Estrella’s Yacht Club Coordinator, Jeff Beuthin, organized the sailing event, by preparing the boats for sea and setting up the obstacle course for the young outdoors-men. “The boys had a great time, and we are looking forward to working with Jeff at the Yacht Club for future watersport activities,” said Fuls. Next on the agenda for Scout Troop #599 – an overnight camping trip and canoeing on Alamo Lake.

Estrella Mountain Elementary student has a Passion for Preservation

Elise Ascencio, a fourth grader in Mrs. Adam’s class, is a determined nine year old with a passion to preserve our earth’s natural environment. She joined efforts with the Girl Scouts of America Cactus-Pine Project in an effort to reduce plastic litter. Elise was determined to impact this project and initiated a plas-tic bag drive for the month of August at Estrella Elementary School. What she didn’t know was the overwhelming response she would receive from stu-dents, families and the com-munity. Every classroom par-ticipated in the drive. The class with the most bags was set to receive an ice cream party and the competition began. It wasn’t long before the school office was overflowing with plastic bags! Elise’s parents stopped by daily to gather the donations. Elise is admired by her classmates, parents and friends and she collected 33,255 plastic bags. Way to take action and make our world a better place Elise!

Former EFhs student/u of a college student Pursues her dream of dance

Tayte Swafford is interested in working in Human Resources within a hospital system when she graduates from the University of Arizona; a goal she’s working on rather seri-ously. Her love of dancing is also being celebrated during her college years as she successfully earned one of 23 positions on the U of A Pomline. Tayte, a col-lege freshman, has been dancing since she was very young. She brings 14 years of private dance instruction and four years of high school spirit line and dance team participation to the U of A college squad. Her parents, Les and Cheryl couldn’t be more proud of the payoff, resulting from many years of growth and hard work.

Tayte’s dad, Les Swafford, handed me a portion of the jour-nal he kept as his daughter went through the performance and evaluation process of ultimately being chosen for one of the spots on the Pomline. Within the pages of his journaling, it is clear that he, and Tayte’s mom, Cheryl, shared nervousness, anxiety and adoration for their daughter, as she focused on pursuing her dream by securing a position on the college dance team. Before the final choices were made by judges, Les made sure to put his feelings of adoration in writing to his daughter – win or lose. Finally, after enduring three rounds of cuts and a lengthy personal interview, this EFHS graduate earned the spot that continues to further define her future as a dance professional. Congratulations Tayte!

In an effort to help their school function optimally “green,” as well as support post 9/11 disabled U.S. veterans, EFHS recyclers, under the supervision of group leader, Julie Dubay, have entered The Dream Machine Recycle Rally, allowing their school the chance to win a $50,000 grand prize for school-wide enhancements, sure to benefit the entire campus. By collecting clear plastic beverage containers (labeled at Pete 1 on the recycling triangle) and non-alcoholic aluminum cans, Estrella Foothills Recycler’s Group enters the competition with other schools statewide, competing for a number of prizes. The Rally runs throughout most of the school year, with a deadline for contributions of April 30, 2012. The contest is made possible by sponsorships from PepsiCo and the City of Goodyear’s Waste Management Team.

Recyclers at EFHS have been presented with a lap top computer, a scanner, scale and recycling bins from local sponsors in order to track, scan and collect clear plastic bottles and non-alcoholic aluminum cans. The school will earn points and rewards for items collected. Then, the City of Goodyear’s Waste Management team will pick up the recyclables and deliver them to local processing facilities for recycling. Student recyclers will be able to track their progress throughout the course of the school year.

Mrs. Dubay remarked that she is very appreciative of City of Goodyear’s Sanitation Supervisor, Adam Kurtz, for introducing the competition and is excited about the possibility of helping students earn smart boards for the campus, as well as classroom makeovers and other additional ‘wish list’ items to assist EFHS in more ‘green’ operations.

Contributions from the community will help! Send in your clear plastic and aluminum contributions with a student, or drop them off at the high school office. The school is located at 13033 S. Estrella Parkway. If you have questions or contributions for pick-up, Mrs. Dubay can be contacted at 623-327-2548. Please have plastic and aluminum items clean and dry. Your donations will help increase beverage container recycling. Currently only 1/3 of all plastic and aluminum beverage containers are recycled. The goal of this program is to increase that number to 50 percent.

The EFHS Interact Club is sponsoring a moti-vational speaker, Jerry Traylor, on September 22 from 10:49am-12:48pm in the Performing Art’s Center. Bringing students together with a positive message from Traylor promises to enlighten students to do their best, with his uplifting, ‘can-do’ attitude. Traylor, who suffers from Cerebral Palsy, has a message of ‘real world’ that hits home with audiences who can appreciate the value of striving to reach goals that often seem beyond limits. Jerry has climbed to the top of Pikes Peak, competed in full-length marathons and jogged cross country, over 3,000 miles- on crutches. His message is how each of us can make a contribution to our community and the world. He is an author with a huge heart who uses humor to positively impact his audience. The EFHS Interact Club is excited to share Jerry’s inspiration with the student body as a kick-start to the 2011-2012 school year.

This event is open to all students at EFHS. Everyone on campus is encouraged to attend.

e-Scrap drive and Green expo at Westar elementary School

The Westar Elementary School PTO is host-ing an E-Scrap Drive and Green Expo on Saturday, November 19 from 8am-3pm at Westar Elementary School, located at 17777 West Westar Drive. Turn your electronic equipment “green” to support Westar’s recycling and sustainability programs, designed to educate our community about local green businesses. Your scrap metal will go to metal recycling facilities, where it will be down and reused. The facility pays for the metal and recyclable material. Drop-off spots will be located in the parking lot at the front of Westar Elementary School. Booths will be set up in front of the school, providing educational material and showcasing green businesses.

Insideout Youth Group to Showcase local Talent

Local Youth Group, InsideOut is planning a unique student and community ministry project this fall and you’re invited to participate! Junior High and High School age youth are encouraged to showcase their talent in a video submission contest. Following the paths of “America’s Got Talent” and “Estrella’s Got Talent,” local youth have the next two months to present a five minute video for consideration into December’s finalists’ competition. This means one five minute video in October and one in November, in hopes of proceeding on to the December finals round. Both October and November submissions will be judged by a panel of three, who will give a point value to each submission. Talented groups, made up of 2-7 can showcase their expertise, based on a theme with a set of given parameters.

EFHS Homecoming is just around the corner. You won’t want to miss the Wolves varsity football team take on Wickenburg at 7pm. Following tradition is the annual homecoming parade on October 28, the day of the homecoming football game. The parade is set to begin at approximately 12:00pm, taking off from the EFHS parking lot. The parade will continue on to Westar, passing the elementary school, then past Estrella Elementary School and finish up along the parkway back to the high school at approxi-mately 1pm. All community members are invited to line the parade route and help cheer teams on to a homecoming victory! new ballroom dance classes Offered at starpointe

It’s time to tango! Join Estrella Dance Studios new-est ballroom dance class, being offered at the Starpointe Residents Club on Saturdays from 2:30-3:30pm. Junior ballroom classes, ages 13-16 are Saturdays from 3-4pm. Dance the waltz, foxtrot, rumba, cha cha, salsa, samba, swing and merengue in American and International styles with Instructor, Tristan Peinge.

Tristan was trained in formal ballroom dancing in Desert Terrace Ballroom Dance Studio in Arizona and El Sagundo Ballroom Dance Studio in Los Angeles. He’s been an instructor for more than 15 years. Tristan describes some of the benefits of dancing as leading students to better health, increased flexibility, along with the sharpening of advanced critical thinking skills. He added that dancing contributes to higher rates of happi-ness and better communication skills, not to mention a better understanding of a variety of cultures. “Anyone and everyone can learn basics of each dance in just a few hours. The depth of knowledge and skill perfection can be increased with practice and lessons, as desired,” says Peigne.

Dance students do not need to worry about bringing partners, extrava-gant clothing or fancy shoes, (until they’ve entered “Dancing with the Stars,” of course). This class is all about comfort. School is up and running and we are delighted to welcome all our new and returning families! You may have noticed that the big wind storm this summer took down our large shade sail. All is now fixed and we are having a great time on the playground with our new cycle-trike and larger shaded area.

This year we have so many fun and exciting events planned. During the month of September, Fire Pal Dave visited with us! He taught about what things are safe to play with and what we need to stay away from; stop, drop & roll; and fire safety. What fun we had learning these important lessons on safety.

This month, we will be holding our annual Costume Parade and Harvest Festival. All our little princesses and superheroes will be wearing their cutest costumes to school for a fun parade, then off to the playground for a hometown Harvest Festival where the kids will be playing games with their teachers and our amazing parent helpers.

“Will work for Frappuccino’s.” It’s amazing what the right motiva-tion can do to get me going. Now, finding motivation for something that’s mandatory, long-term, and painfully boring is another story. How do I get around that? I focus on the big picture—what I want out of life. Unfortunately, most teens my age haven’t a clue. With my eye on the prize, I can make little goals that will ultimately lead me to my desired destination. The same works for people everywhere—doesn’t it? Maybe you want to be a graphic designer. If so, how will those mandatory classes you have get you there? Suddenly that math class (yes, the nap period) becomes much more important – tasks essential to the job like balancing the budget or working with computers require it. Though it is still admittedly boring, classes are much easier to understand when you’re motivated – kind of like eating veg-etables, or avoiding the electric chair. If you want to excel in anything, you need to be motivated.

The community of Estrella Mountain Ranch is made up of a unique blend of homeowners, off-site owners and renters. Staying connected with all the different individuals is challenging. The common interest of all residents is making Estrella the best community possible.

Residents are often unsure where to turn when they have a question or a problem. At any time, residents of Estrella can contact the community management company, CCMC, by phone, email, or walk-in with questions or concerns. CCMC will work to address and solve any problems.

In addition, an established Voting Member Committee (VMC) plays an important role in the community. The VMC is composed of two residents from each individual neighborhood within Estrella. One resident is the Voting Member and the other is the Alternate Voting Member. These indi-viduals are a great source of information and a valuable communication link to CCMC and the board members on behalf of the residents.

Think of your Voting Member as the “Voice of the Residents.” Staying connected with them can provide answers, information, and help resolve

issues. The VMC meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 6:30pm in the Gallery Room at Starpointe. During the meeting, Voting Members receive valuable information from Estrella chartered committees and CCMC. Another function of the VMC is for the Voting Member to bring community related topics brought by CCMC or a resident back to their neighborhood for recommendation or comment. The VMC will then provide CCMC with a recommendation based on a consensus from the neighborhoods’ feedback.

The Voting Members work diligently for the community, unfortunately there are several neighborhoods currently unrepresented. If you think you may be interested in representing your neighborhood, please contact the community office or email the VMC at [email protected]. A list of Voting Members and the neighborhoods they represent is on the com-munity website, lifeinestrella.com, in the document library. So look up your “Voice of the Resident,” contact them, tell them you want to stay in touch, and provide them an email address. Next time you need them, your “Voice of the Resident” will be ready to assist you.

G.A.I.n. event Scheduled for Goodyear ballpark

Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods (G.A.I.N.) is hosting a FREE community event on the front lawn of the Goodyear Ballpark, located on Estrella Parkway, south of Yuma Road, on October 22 from 4:30-7:30pm. Activities at this festival include:

Stop by to enjoy entertainment from “Static Confuzion” a classic rock band, “16 Minutes of Fame” a youth rock band and enjoy free tastes from a variety of local restaurants. Hot dogs and hamburgers provided for a nominal donation, provided by the Knights of Columbus.

Teachers, education administration, students, parents, and tax-payers are bracing for another Override election in the month of November. The results of the election will determine the quality of education and programs that, in turn, directly benefit or deter the future of our youth. Quality education, coupled with co-curricular programs and extracurricular activities are foundations that set pathways to success for our children. Many students at Estrella Foothills High School are hopeful about the continuation of valued programs at school. This month, we are spotlighting the continued achievements of a student dance-team member, who is continuing her love of dance on the University of Arizona Pomline, as she pursues higher education. The pathway to her success as a danc-er was greatly influenced by opportunities on dance and spirit teams during her high school years. Current high school students are hopeful that their dreams will also become realities, with the background building blocks of quality educa-tion, programs and activities offered during their high school years.

Continued opportunity will be in voter hands next month. The fol-lowing information regarding the override is being published to give you a sense of the ramifications of an override election that passes, as opposed to one that does not.

The Buckeye Union High School District will have an M&O Override Election on the November 8, 2011 ballot. The override provides funding that assists the district in preserving lower class sizes, hiring and retaining highly qualified teachers, maintaining extracurricular and co-curricular pro-grams for our students and keeping the campuses clean and safe. With the failure of the override last November and the budget cuts passed down from the State of Arizona over the past four years, the district has lost $3,000,000 of critical funding for our students. In that same four-year period, this loss in funding has directly resulted in the district-wide reduction of 34 teach-ers (47 positions in total) and the implementation of a fee for students to participate in after school activities. If the override election fails again, the district will have to reduce the operating budget by an additional $600,000 for fiscal year 2012-13. This may result in similar cuts, such as the loss of three teachers, the elimination of the teacher mentor and testing coordinator positions, the implementation of an activity fee and the rise in the ID and parking fees experienced at Estrella Foothills High School for the 2011-12 school year. In an effort to “tighten the belt” during these tough economic times, the district has implemented a number of money saving programs including energy management, department reorganization and coming soon, a large solar project at Estrella Foothills High School. As far as the financial impact on the residential taxpayer, a home with an assessed value of $100,000 would generate $27 in override property taxes for fiscal year 2012-13. Vee has a neat relationship with her parents. She always has. As the young-est of six children (her closest sibling is eight years older), she was the golden child who was treated with far more leniency than her older siblings. I’m pretty sure they’re still jealous of that fact. Her father has been an upstanding guy who has been a business owner and a patriarch to a large family of over 100 people. Over the years, he has been actively involved in the community and at church. In a word, he is respectable.

Enter me, a very green and young adult who knew little about the world and was fairly arrogant to boot. Sounds like a guy, right? Anyway, I was trying to find my way and needed a little wiggle room to try and fail. I’ve gotta say, I got that one down really well. So in the beginning of our marriage, I would periodically hear my newly wedded wife utter a phrase that would get under my skin. Because I was fairly “tool challenged” I would make a mess of things. Somewhere in the process of making a ghastly attempt at a household repair, Vee would walk in the room; inspect the job and say, “Hmmmm, that’s not the way my dad would do that.”

– for better or for worse. I take that as a compliment, as my wife’s dad is a good

Does this mean the perceptions women have of their fathers greatly shape how they perceive their own marriages, parenting styles and even their own identities? … yeah! Now fast forward to us. As parents, we have the potential and the opportunity to build healthy life-long habits into our kids – values they will own for life.

So who shaped Vee’s values? It was mostly done by her dad and mom. Today, if we were to sit down with Vee’s parents and match the behaviors and attitudes of our daily routines, we would see some interesting patterns. Even the day and time we do our weekly chores appears to have been something established in Vee’s childhood. Why? It’s a pattern that started with her parents.

While the details would be different, Vee wanted a guy who would function similarly to her dad. So, it shouldn’t come as a big surprise she would want to marry a guy who was on the same values page.

So, what does this all mean? While the competition seems to be flourish-ing at pumping its values into our kids (i.e. the average high school student has spent over 22,000 hours watching TV, playing video games, using the internet, or personal device by the time he or she graduates from high school), dads and moms still have the first and potentially greatest opportunity to shape their child’s values and convictions.

Estrella Mountain Community College will be presenting a series of informative and fun classes at the beautiful Canta Mia Village Center, for Canta Mia, Estrella residents and their guests. Chef, Artist Michael will be teaching beginning classes in both Culinary Arts and Oil Painting. His goal is to help each student explore their creativity. Maureen Hannon, EMCC coined the title “Community Scholar” for residents of Canta Mia and Estrella who wish to share their skills.

Cunningham is a self-taught artist, born and raised in New York City who has exhibited his work nationally and internationally. Michael owned and operated Infinity Art Gallery in Orange County, California before mov-ing to Goodyear, Arizona in 2003. His Art class will focus on basic tech-niques in the application of textural Oil Painting. Classes are scheduled for October 22, October 29 and November 5, from 9:00-10:30am. Following completion of the three classes, you will take home a 6 X 6 textured oil painting that you have created.

Chef Michael’s skills in the Culinary Arts have been applauded by diners in many areas because of his creativity with flavors and fresh prepara-tions. A graduate of the prestigious California Culinary Academy in San Francisco, he has worked in the finest hotels and restaurants and owned and operated catering businesses in both California and Arizona. The beginner’s culinary class will focus on the essence of preparing American Regional cuisine. Classes will be October 5 and October 12, from 6:00-7:30pm. You will take home recipes and cooking instructions to help you recreate the masterpieces you will sample.

ECA Paint Project 2011/2012The estrella Community Association will be con-ducting house paint-ing inspections start-ing november 1, 2011. This is a very thorough process performed by the eCA Compliance Coordinator along with the eCA Covenant review Committee members. They will visually inspect each home for the aesthetic appeal of the home’s house paint.

Given that homes in the community range from new to 20 years old, it is no surprise that many homes are in need of paint at this time. If you receive the Courtesy letter that your home needs to be painted, there are a few things to keep in mind:

• The Estrella Community Association generously offers ECA residents six (6) months from the date of the courtesy letter to complete the painting project on their home;

• In 2008, the Board of Directors approved nine (9) new color pallets to choose from. These pallets are located in the Community Services office;

There’s never a dull moment (or weekend) in the Hinzmann house. The four year residents of the Legends are self-described sports fanatics, each involved in either playing, schedule organizing or coaching a sport or two. All three of their children, Cole, Austin and Abby are Estrella Youth Sports participants, play-ing on teams that include baseball, basketball, flag football, soccer and volleyball. All of this activity keeps the Hinzmann’s scrambling to afterschool practices and weekend games year-round. You might think all the youngster’s sporting activities would completely fill the family calendar, but somehow Bill and Amanda have found time to organize Estrella Adult Sports locally. They’ve currently put together men’s and women’s softball leagues and plan to include sand volleyball at South Lake Park, flag football and basketball in upcoming months.

Originally from Nebraska, the Hinzmanns followed Amanda’s parents to Estrella. They lived in Mesa previously, moved back to Nebraska, after their son Cole was born, finally settling into Estrella, where they plan to raise their three children. Amanda says that the summer heat cannot scare them from Arizona and that they prefer it to Nebraska’s harsh winters. The Hinzmanns have not totally cut their Nebraska ties, however. Since Bill’s family still resides in the Midwestern state, they occasionally get the oppor-tunity to fly back for a visit. Bill and Amanda are faithful Husker fans and couldn’t be happier that the team has been added to the Big-10, which they

hope will bring more televised college football games to their local screen.

All three children attend Estrella Mountain Elementary School, sharing their residence with their beloved eight-year old Beagle-Terrier Mix, named Roxie. They love their neighborhood, and they enjoy the fact that their street is usually filled with playing children and the sounds of young families interacting together.

Bill is a Sales Representative for Alliance Beverage Distributing Company and Amanda does accounting and

bookkeeping services for small businesses locally. Amanda describes their family lifestyle as, “Simple” with occasional family dine-out nights at some of their favorite local restaurants including The Native New Yorker, Arriba’s and Taste of Italy.

Besides playing sports, the Hinzmann family enjoys camping. One desti-nation location is their annual summertime camping trip to Mingus Mountain to escape the desert heat, while fishing and hiking the mountains. This family of five attends Estrella Mountain Church.

The Estrella Mountain Elementary School PTO is partnering with the health and wellness, Arizona in ACTION for this year’s Move-A-Thon. The date is set for October 4 from 7:50am to 2:15pm at the Estrella Mountain Elementary School Soccer fields, located at 10301 S. San Miguel in Goodyear.

Arizona in ACTION has secured seven local, profes-sional health businesses to run the children through the Move-A-Thon’s fitness stations. One of the advantages of our climate is that we can have bright, colorful flowers in our gardens at Estrella all winter long. Early October is a good time to start getting ready to plant winter flowers as temperatures will soon begin to sink following the hot summer weather. The time to plant is when daily temperatures are consistently lower than 100 degrees. Plan to begin preparing beds up to two weeks ahead of planting time.

Soil preparation is essential to growing winter annuals successfully. Make sure your planting bed is well drained. Then, add organic amendments such as peat moss or com-post. A variety of mulches for this purpose are generally available at a local home improvement store. Spread about a four inch layer of the mulch over the bed and mix it into a depth of 12 inches. Fertilizer and sulfur can be worked into the soil at the same time. Use Sulfur-coated urea or ammonium phosphate (16-2-0) at 1-3 pounds per 100 square feet of bed area and 3 pounds of sulfur per 100 square feet.

When your soil is ready, you can contemplate which varieties of flow-ers you want to plant. Calendulas, Geraniums, Pansies and Petunias are some good choices that grow well in winter in the low desert, but there are many others as well. Sweet Alyssum and Lobelia are best for borders around the edge of your flower beds. At the nursery, select the healthiest plants you can find. Younger plants are generally a better choice than tall, leggy plants that have already spent a long time in the container. Naturally, you should choose flowers that are suited to the sunlight available at the location of your flower bed (full sun, partial sun, constant shade).

Prior to planting, water the bed well. Plant when the soil is still moist, but not saturated with water. Do not plant too deep! The stem of the flow-ers should be at the same depth in the bed as it was in the container. You may want to carefully open the sides of the root ball with your fingers to

promote quicker root growth into the soil of the bed. Water the bed well immediately after planting and continue to water daily. In some sunny spots, you may want to water at least twice a day as long as temperatures remain high. As the winter progresses, you should reduce water accordingly. Lastly, apply a pre-emergent to the bed for weed control. We suggest Preen, a brand that can be found at most gardening stores.

To maintain a good looking flower bed throughout the winter, it is best to fertilize monthly with ammonium phosphate. You will also need to “deadhead” the flowers as their blossoms fade. To do this, pinch the faded blossom off the stem right at the base of the flower. This will keep the bed looking fresh and also promotes the growth of new blossoms.

Fear not, this is not mystical science it’s simply collecting historical and current data, and extrapolating it into the future.

In the summer of 2010, scientists publish articles stating that, “The person that will live to be 1,000 years old has been born.” So what is possible for us? Maybe we could make an easy 100, or 120. At this point, I think we have the same thought – I don’t want to live to be 100 or 120 if I am going to be deaf, blind and in a wheel chair like my great grandmother was at 98.

So the issue is how long we want to live and that depends on our level of activity and how we look and feel.

Take a few minutes to think about, and write down, your weight, activity level and eating habits ten years ago. Next to it, write down your evaluation for

today. What’s changed? Ideally, weight is the same or less, activity is the same or more and eating habits are healthier, with better choices and less volume.

If your weight is more now, divide the number of pounds gained over 10 years by your weight in 2001. This gives you the percentage gain. Example: weight 2001 = 195 lbs; 2011 = 230 lbs; Gain = 35 lbs., Increase 35 ÷195 = 17.9%. If nothing changes, you will continue the same rate of gain over the next 10 years. Example: 230 lbs. + 17.9% = 271 lbs. in 2021. This could be

The start of the school year means a return to sports for many chil-dren. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in guidelines published August 30, 2011 in Pediatrics is urging coaches and sports organizations to better understand that a bump to the head is nothing to ignore.

Between 2002 and 2006, 144,000 children were seen in emergency and outpatient departments for concussion. The majority of concussions happen among boys and are sports related, with football and ice hockey being the most common sports associated with concussion.

There has been an increasing focus on proper diagnosis and treatment of concussion over the last decade, but there is concern that in spite of the increased attention, many young athletes do not get the care they need. Improper treatment of concussion can lead to severe long-term cognitive and developmental problems, especially among young children.

The most common symptom of concussion is headache; less than 10 percent of patients lose consciousness. Signs and symptoms for con-cussion fall into four categories: physical, cognitive, emotional, and sleep. Concussions warrant evaluation by imaging (computed tomography scan or magnetic resonance imaging) when there are reasons to suspect intracranial injury. The Sport Concussion Assessment Tool 2 is the standard evaluation for athletes aged 10 years and older.

All patients with concussion should rest, physically and mentally, and follow-up with a physician before returning to sports. However, it’s reported that nearly a third of patients don’t receive these instructions at discharge.

Christopher Carlton and his wife, Melanie, moved to Goodyear after getting married in 2009. As avid hikers, their newlywed love for each other expanded instantly to the beauty and peacefulness of the Estrella Mountains. “We both love explor-ing Arizona and we frequently take day trips to get away,” said Chris. One of their favorite Arizona destination spots is Jerome, Arizona. The tiny min-ing town situated high in the Yavapai hills, where Christopher and Melanie recommend The Palace-Haunted Hamburger in this ghost town largely full of outdoor adventure, offering amazing views of the valley.

Christopher has always wanted to own his own business and used to think that investing his money was too complicated. “I thought that investing was something only rich people did, and something that I would worry about much later in life,” he said. With minimal direction, he set up and began contributing to his 401k at work. It was the beginning of a great start to saving for the future. Soon thereafter, he began to wonder if his investments would be enough to carry him through retirement. It was then that he realized that he needed someone to answer those questions and guide him through his goals. It was that personal experience that gave Christopher the vision for his new business.

“I could help people plan and save for the future, as well as educate the community on ways to invest,” he shared. “I chose the investment

The company currently serves nearly 7 mil-lion clients. Christopher particularly likes the core business of principles and values embedded in the Edward Jones philosophy which offers service to the individual as the utmost important goal. Christopher stated that it is his job to pro-

vide that personal brand of service to his clients, including a broad mix of municipal, government and corporate bonds, mutual funds, common stocks and tax-advantaged securities on a one-on-one basis.

Christopher intends to host a series of education seminars locally, at the Starpointe Residents Club in the coming months. Stay-tuned for informa-tion on scheduled informational instruction, beginning with a focus on the foundations of investing. Additionally, he plans to include topics for parents, offering tips to teach children the value of saving, as well as tax-free invest-ing, estate planning and tips for making sense of retirement.

Hanna Atkins took her first golf lesson at the Golf Club of Estrella in October 2005 at the age of seven. Just a few months later she would win the very first tournament she played in. How impressive for someone so young and new to the sport!

Fast forward to April 2010 and Hanna wins the 1st Tee of the Phoenix “Masters Tournament” at the Aguila Golf Course. Winning a Masters’ event is a special honor for every golfer, especially when you are just 12 years old.

The Atkins family, Kim, Bea and Hanna moved to Arizona in 2005 from Las Vegas. They were drawn to Estrella because of the family oriented community. This Fall, the Lakeside Farmers Market will return to Estrella. The Estrella Lakeside Farmers Market is a welcome opportunity for the community and visitors to come together once a month and enjoy the convenience of local goods right in their own backyard. And with cooler weather just around the corner, there is no better way to spend a Saturday.

Holly Aguilar, Estrella’s Lifestyle Director, has heard from many excited community members regarding the return of the Farmers Market. “The residents who supported the Farmers Market in the past are pleased to hear it is returning. They are most looking forward to browsing through all the booths, shopping, seeing unique and specialty items and chatting with the vendors.

Starting Saturday, October 8th the Lakeside Farmers Market will return to Estrella the second Saturday of each month through April 2012. Be sure to check the Estrella facebook page or stop by the Information Center for the latest information on the Farmers Market schedule and vendors.
