I don’t know what I enjoy more about Guy Fawkes night, from the ‘oohing’ and ‘ahhing’ at the fabulous fireworks to the wrapping up warm and tucking into a chilli jacket potato. The nights are darker and it’s time to embrace the winter! But, whatever you have planned for fireworks night, please keep safe, and keep your animals tucked up inside.

It’s about now when our thoughts start turning to Christmas! I’m sure many of you will visit the lovely Blackthorpe Barn at some point in the run-up to Christmas. This year they are celebrating their 21st birthday (Funny, as I do that every year too!). Find out more on pages 18-19.

The people of Bury St Edmunds put their thinking caps on week, as a team of ‘Wordettes’ from St Nicholas Hospice Care were out in the town centre.Hannah Pepper, marketing assistant, and Camille Berriman, Press and PR officer, went into the town centre on as part of the first ever national Hospice Care Week (October 8-14).Armed with paper, pens and a camera, they asked shoppers and market stallholders to sum up what hospice care means to them in just one word.The ‘one word campaign’ was part of St Nicholas Hospice Care’s efforts to dispel any myths about the hospice and the services it provides.Amongst the words chosen by the Bury community were: Great; creativity; heartfelt and support.Hospice Chief Executive Barbara Gale said: “Hospice Care Week was an opportunity to challenge the myths surrounding hospice care and show people that it is about living, not dying.Many people think Suffolk hospices only provide end of life care and are often surprised when theyfind out we also care for people of varying age ranges in their own homes, in day care and through counselling and family support.”

I must admit that when doing my yoga teacher training I found myself very sceptical as to the benefits of this and many other yogic breathing exercises, but over the last 10 years I have taught it to so many people who have found it completely reduces their stress and anxiety symptoms and improves their overall health, I have changed my opinion!

Breathing for relaxation and stress relief nadi shodhana (Alternate nostril Breathing)if you don’t do anything else, this is a simple yoga breathing exercise that can be done virtually anywhere, anyplace. You will be glad you did. it is really powerful! However, you may, like me think at first that is is “rather weird and freaky” but trust me, it works brilliantly for reducing your stress levels, calming your mind, lowering your blood pressure and inducing deep relaxation…give it a go!

the name alternate nostril breathing is due to the fact that we alternate between the two nostrils when we do the breathing exercise. Yogis believe that this exercise will clean and rejuvenate your vital channels of energy, thus the name nadi sodhana (purification of nadis or energy channels – unseen at present by the common eye but used in therapies such as Acupuncture, Reiki etc).

With this exercise, we breathe through only one nostril at a time.

the logic behind this exercise is that our normal breathing does alternate from one nostril to the other at various times during the day. in a healthy person the breath will alternate between nostrils about every two hours. Because as most of us are not in optimum health, this time period varies considerably between people and further reduces our vitality. According to the yogis, when the breath continues to flow in one nostril for more than two hours, as it does with most of us, it will have an adverse effect on our health. if the right nostril is involved, the result is mental and nervous disturbance. if the left nostril is involved, the result is chronic fatigue and reduced brain function. the longer the flow of breath in one nostril, the more serious the illness will be.

Benefits of nadi shodhana (alternate nostril Breathing)

the exercise produces optimum function to both sides of the brain: that is optimum creativity (right brain) and optimum logical verbal activity (left brain). this also creates a more balanced person, since both halves of the brain are functioning properly.

the yogis consider this to be the best technique to calm the mind and the nervous system.

yogis thousands of years ago. scientists have recently found that we don’t breathe equally with both nostrils, that one nostril is much easier to breathe through than the other at any particular time and that this alternates about every three hours. the yogis claim that the natural period is every two hours, but we must remember these modern studies were done on people who do not have an optimum health level.

• Scientists also discovered that the nasal cycle corresponds with brain function. the electrical activity of the brain was found to be greater on the side opposite the less congested nostril. the right side of the brain controls creative activity, while the left side controls logical verbal activity. the research showed that when the left nostril was less obstructed, the right side of the brain was predominant. test subjects were indeed found to do better on creative tests. similarly when the right nostril was less obstructed the left side of the brain was predominant. test subjects did better on verbal skills.

• Medical science has not quite caught up with the ancient yogis yet. the yogis went one step further. they observed that a lot of disease was due to the nasal cycle being disturbed; that is, if a person breathed for too long through one nostril. to prevent and correct this condition, they developed the alternate nostril breathing technique. this clears any blockage to air flow in the nostrils

and re-establishes the natural nasal cycle. For example, the yogis have known for a long time that prolonged breathing through the left nostril only (over a period of years) will produce asthma. they also know that this so-called incurable disease can be easily eliminated by teaching the patient to breathe through the right nostril until the asthma is cured, and then to prevent it recurring by doing the alternate nostril breathing technique. the yogis also believe that diabetes is caused to a large extent by breathing mainly through the right nostril.

Technique Nadi Sodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing)

1. Close the right nostril with your right thumb and inhale through the left nostril.

2. immediately close the left nostril with your right ring finger, and at the same time remove your thumb from the right nostril, and exhale through this nostril.

3. inhale now through the right nostril. Close the right nostril with your right thumb and exhale through the left nostril. this is one round.

start by doing three rounds, adding one at a time until you are doing as many as feels right for you. Allow your breath to remain quiet, calm, slow and peaceful – never force the breath. You may want to try a gentle pause between each breath (known as a retention) but never force your breath to be held. (no retaining the breath in pregnancy)

Alternate nostril breathing should not be practiced if you have a cold or if your nasal passages are blocked in any way. Forced breathing through the nose may lead to complications. in pranayama it is important to follow this rule: under no circumstances should anything be forced. if you use the nostrils for breath control they must be unobstructed.

Dry SkiN?

Why Do i Suffer From Dry Skin in the Winter?In winter, low temperatures, low humidity and strong, harsh winds deplete skin of its natural lipid layer, which keeps the skin from drying out. The dry air from central heating also sucks the moisture out of skin. To keep skin soft and supple, your goal is not to add moisture to skin, but to keep moisture in.

Skip the Drying SoapsSoaps can be drying. Stick with a creamy moisturising cleanser that contains glycerin or petrolatum. Extra tip: Simply can’t skip the bath? Skip the bubbles, which can contain harsh foaming ingredients and opt for bath oils or oatmeal scrubs, which are great for soothing itchy skin.

Stay HydratedMany people believe if they drink more water, they’ll hydrate skin. This is believed to be a myth and you simply cannot moisturise skin from the inside out, but recent studies suggests people who drink relatively little water could see

a significant benefit in skin hydration if they started drinking nine eight-ounce glasses of water per day. What does this mean? Probably that dehydration does affect skin, but a normally hydrated person isn’t going to see major benefits by drinking even more water. So don’t expect bottled water to save you from dry skin and the winter itch.

Don’t Forget your LipsLicking your lips will not moisturise them and instead will help dry them out. Lips retain less moisture than other parts of the body, so they tend to dry out more quickly. A simple lip balm helps.

Protect your Face, TooIf you have super, duper sensitive skin, consider avoiding rinsing your face with tap water, which can contain harsh minerals that are especially drying to the skin, instead use a cold cream to cleanse your face or use bottled spring water. Even consider Fish Oil Pills - New studies show omega-3 fish oil pills may soothe super dry skin. Patients who took fish oils pills in a recent study saw significant results within a few weeks.

As the festive season approaches we all look forward to sharing quality time celebrating the Christmas festivities. BUT for someone with a hearing loss this can be the most difficult type of listening environment to cope with. The constant chitter chatter, the excessive background noise, music and loud voices, all make hearing clear speech very challenging. A normal hearing person doesn’t have to consider these issues, as the brain has more ability to discriminate and pick out the required speech naturally. At times it’s easier for a hearing impaired person to decline an invitation to a social event as they know just how difficult and isolating such an occasion can be.

If you are aware that a family member or a friend is experiencing difficulty with hearing clearly, help them to be included in the celebrations by ensuring you look at them whilst in conversation. Raise your voice only slightly but project it more clearly, excess volume does not make speech clearer it only distorts the signal. Guide the group to talk one at a time rather than all at once; provide good lighting, seat the hard of hearing person with the background noise behind them or better still remove all unnecessary background noise if you can.

Hearing problems can lead to isolation, lack of confidence, strain on relationships and lots more; may I ask if you notice a member of your family or a friend struggling with their hearing please encourage them to have their hearing tested? The average hearing-impaired adult waits over 5 years beyond first the first signs before seeking help!! The longer a hearing loss is left; the chances are it will decline further.

As a routine everybody over the age of 65 should have their hearing tested at least every two years by a qualified professional, just as we do with our eyesight. With today’s digital technology, it is no longer necessary to struggle with hearing problems; the latest micro automatic digital hearing aids are making vast differences to lives especially in social environments.

ingredientsFOR THE STEW

500g braising steaks , cut into bite-sized chunks

2 tbsp plain flour, seasoned with pepper and a little salt

2 tbsp olive oil

1 large onion, finely chopped

450g carrots, cut into chunks

2 large parsnips, cut into chunks

1 bay leaf

2 tbsp sundried or regular tomato paste

300ml red wine or extra stock

450ml vegetable stock

FOR THE TOPPING

225g plain flour

3 tsp baking powder

140g cheddar, coarsely grated

2 tbsp olive oil

150ml milk

Method[1] Heat oven to 150C/fan 130C/gas 2. Toss the beef in seasoned flour. Heat the oil in a large flameproof casserole. Fry the beef over a high heat until browned all over - it’s easiest to do this in batches. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside.

[2] Add 2 tbsp water and the onion to the pan, stir well over a medium heat, scraping up the crusty bits from the bottom of the pan. Lower the heat and fry gently for 10 mins, stirring occasionally until the onions have softened.

[3] Tip in the carrots, parsnips and bay leaf, then fry for 2 mins more. Return the beef to the pan, stir in the tomato paste, wine if using, and stock, then bring to the boil. Cover and cook in the oven for 1¾-2 hrs until the meat is tender. Can be made up to 2 days ahead or frozen for up to 1 month. Defrost thoroughly in the fridge before topping and baking. Take out of the oven and increase the temperature to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5.

[4] To make the topping, sieve the flour and baking powder into a bowl and add half the cheese. Mix olive oil and milk, then stir into the flour to make a soft, slightly sticky dough. Add more milk, if necessary. Spoon the dough over the meat and vegetables, sprinkle with the remaining cheese and bake for about 15 mins until golden, risen and cooked through.

To complete preparations for Christmas many visitors also choose their perfect Christmas Tree directly from Rougham Estate where the Barn is situated. Trees from the Estate are famous for their quality and longevity, having been carefully nurtured throughout the year by the previous winners of the ‘British Christmas Tree Grower of the Year’ award, the Estate has also supplied 10 Downing Street on numerous occasions.

last month we mentioned the dramatic decrease in the number of incidents involving anti-social behaviour around the Moreton Hall Estate, unfortunately in recent weeks the frequency of this type of incident has increased.Particularly over the weekends we are receiving more and more calls reporting anti social behaviour all over the estate being caused by youths, examples of these incidents are doors being knocked on, things being thrown at doors and damage being caused to street furniture also contents of grit bins being emptied on roads and in one case on a car.Can we appeal to parents to pass the message on to children that this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated by local residents and the police, we will seek to take positive action against anyone identified as a participant in these incidents. Can we also request that if you witness any incident of anti social behaviour please let us know either by phone or e mail at the time as it is very difficult to identify offenders several days later.

the majority of us look forward to bonfire night parties but can i just take this opportunity to remind everyone of a few important points for consideration:

• Loud noises can alarm and frighten residents and particularly animals, if you are arranging your own display please let neighbours know out of courtesy.

• It is illegal for anyone under 18 to possess fireworks in a public place, fireworks are extremely dangerous when handled incorrectly.

• Be considerate to the rest of the community and consider not everyone will not want to be disturbed late at night or for lengthy periods of time.

I am a Master Composter Volunteer, which means that I have been trained by a charity called Garden Organics, in association with Suffolk County Council, and I devote my spare time to encouraging and assisting everyone to compost more. This month I would like to introduce the idea of Community Composting. It is a concept that can mean something different to everyone and that is the beauty of it. By writing down what I perceive it to be, and what others have done, it may inspire others who may have a different vision. I will cover the subject from my point of view and then add an extract directly from the Community Composting network web site. I make no apologies for doing that as they can define what they do far better than I could.

On it’s smallest scale, if two neighbours both want to compost as it will reduce waste and will produce soil conditioner, one of them has no room for a composter but the other one has and is willing to compost their neighbours organic waste too, then I would consider that to qualify.

The actual official schemes are still open to interpretation and examples that I’ve seen

can vary from kerb side collections of all food waste to compliment the Local Authorities Green waste collection. Other’s have a “bring your own” to a central site and volunteers mix and organise the composters. I think that the best schemes that I have seen have been Social Enterprises and one that I read about in the US is run by coffee business’ who use worms to compost their waste as well as taking in additional kitchen waste from volunteers, and the finished compost is given to a low income community who grow their own food.

In a way I run my own Community composting scheme because I compost at work. The finished compost gets put on the flower beds or I offer it to my colleagues to take home for their gardens. Have you considered composting the waste produced at your work? I’d love to hear about it if you do.

Nature Watch by Woodland Ways

If you have been through or pastPondCovert(nexttoSebert Wood school recently, you may have noticed that a number of things going on. Mostobviously,closetotheschool entrance, Woodland ways volunteers have cleared an area of brambles and elder bushes, leaving the cuttings in the wood to provide a home for hibernating hedgehogs and toads whilst it slowly rots down. In early 2012 the land will be planted with local varieties of fruit trees. The orchard will be open to all when it matures, and we will be able to do our fruit shopping free of charge. Any windfalls will feed the autumn and winter thrushes, and other wildlife.

You may also have noticed that a number of trees, mostly ash, were felled by Urban Forestry on behalf of St Edmundsbury Borough Council a few weeks

ago. The trees were showing signs of rot, and there was some risk that they could have fallen on innocent passing members of the public, or on adjacent gardens. The trunks have been lefttoprovideabrilliantmicro-habitat; as the wood slowly rots it provides a home for specialist insects and fungi that live nowhere else.

On5thNovember,MoretonHall Brownies are due to surface themainpaththroughPondCovert, keeping it from going muddy as winter progresses.

NotallatPondCovetisgood, however. In September, several loads of garden rubbish were dumped in the wood. Woodland Ways has carried out house to house enquiries, and it has also been reported to the BoroughCouncil.Pleasetakeyour waste to the Rougham Hill recycling site instead of spoiling everyone’s woodland.

Novemberif planning a new garden or individual borders, use the winter weather

to your advantage, as winter frosts can help break up heavy clay soils,

leaving the soil more workable next spring.

Dig over the ground, adding good quality, weed free manure and remove

any weeds, making sure all the roots are removed.

november is a good time to plan the plants you wish to include in next

years garden.

Any trees or shrubs that you wish to move can safely be transplanted

now, and perennials can also still be planted. Roses respond well to

planting this time of year, whilst the soil is still warm enough to encourage

a little root growth.

Any plants appreciate being well watered before planting, stand bare root

roses and trees in a bucket of water for an hour, and if the dry weather

continues, watering may be required after planting.

this month we have the traditional bonfire night celebrations in thousands

of gardens all over the country. if you are planning a display in your

garden, remember to have a thorough tidy up of the whole garden

beforehand.

With people wandering about in your garden after nightfall, its important

to have any fallen branches and debris cleared away to reduce the risk of

tripping over. it’s also important to remove garden debris away from the

area you use for a bonfire, just in case.

Gutter cleaning is an easy thing to put off: out of sight, out of

mind. But, if you don’t adhere to a regular gutter maintenance schedule, you can end up with

t seems that I spend an unhealthy amount of my time, frequenting

cafés and coffee shops. This is not because I am addicted to caffeine (although their may be an element of truth in that) or that I am in a social whirlwind with preferred rendezvous points at well known coffee houses. No – sadly not. It is of course, like most things nowadays, down to the children.

The other day I was enjoying/enduring giving the kids their morning snack at Starbucks when it occurred to me that several other people in the room seemed to be having a completely different experience. Some were eating tasty looking expensive pastries, others drinking fancy ‘coffees’ that probably had a similar calorie content to a Whopper meal, and one chap was playing with his new toy – an iPad, whilst his girlfriend starred aimlessly out of the window,

maybe dreaming of the days before the touch screen device entered their relationship.

A few years ago I guess I did enjoy similar relaxing stops at these places, breaking from… errr whatever I used to do before children, but not that often. I think I used to rate the coffee houses based on a few obvious factors, such as location, ambience and quality of coffee. In fact I remember making, shall I say, derogatory remarks about buggies and screaming kids interrupting my quiet Mocha. How times have changed!

For those of you who are not parents let me explain. When picking the ‘lucky’ vendor to whom you will give your custom a few things go through your mind. Firstly, do they have a decent sized downstairs loo in which you can simultaneously change a baby, toilet a toddler and phone the Mrs. Now consider the layout of the tables. Can you successfully slalom around the

chairs and safely park a double buggy without upsetting more than half the customers?

Okay, we’re narrowing it down now. But what about the price? Do they offer bargain coffee (which you don’t really want) that you can sit on the table in front of you whilst you feed the baby and blag some free milk for the toddler? Great, that’s decided. But hang on? Isn’t that the same place we caused a terrible scene at last week when we couldn’t make it to the loos in time, and narrowly avoided causing second degree burns to a table of pensioners when the toy appeared to be thrown from our direction? Damn.

So I am probably one of the only people that actually thinks Bury cannot have enough coffee shops and cafés! Once I (or should I say ‘my kids’) have been barred from one, we can still find another vendor to pleasure with our custom.

A request from Police Direct, I have been asked to pass on the following.

A lady was shopping in a major store when she had a call of nature, she made her way to the toilet, locked the door she hung her handbag on the hook on the back of the door. Her handbag contained her house keys, driving licence with her address on it. While going about her business she saw a hand come over the top

of the door and take her handbag, she reported this to the store manager and went home. Two days later she got a call from the store saying they had her handbag but no purse, the lady made her way to the store, but on arriving she was informed that they had not called her, she made her way home only to find that while she was out she had been burgled.

The Police say take care especially at this time of the year, keep house keys separate from your handbag and keep both with you at all time.

METAL DETECTINGOver the past weeks there has been a spate of holes appearing on 10 Acre football field, these are caused by someone metal detecting digging holes and leaving them uncovered. It is illegal to metal detect on council property without written permission and you could have your equipment confiscated and face a hefty fine into the bargain. I believe this is happening late evenings or even during the night, the council know about it and are putting arrangements in place to stop it.

You may have read that a new bus service has commenced for Bury, yes there has, but not for Moreton Hall. I attended the launch with Cllr P Warby and Cllr Terry Buckle and I was not amused to find that the east of Bury would not benefit from this service.I questioned the Director Mr Bill Hiron about this only to be told that they would look at Moreton Hall at a later date, I tried to get a rough time frame but to no avail. We were not happy bunnies, but we will keep fighting for a better bus service for Moreton Hall.

fly postingIt is very noticeable that we have a lot of fly posting on and around the estate, I wonder how many read in the papers lately about a lady in a town up north was fined £750 for putting up 100 posters about her lost dog, it cost her £75 per poster. St Edmunds Borough are not that harsh but they could impose a fine if things get any more out of hand, please be mindful of this. The worst are those celebrating birthdays and events which seem to stay up months after the event.

youth clubPlease notice, due to requests from some parents. The youth club will open from 6pm until 8pm during the winter months. We are still waiting for a response from the 14 to 17 year olds regarding opening an extra night for this age group, anyone interested please contact me.

light on pathwaysI have had four or five emails regarding this matter, some indicating that the lights go out while the pubs and clubs are still open. As many people use the pathways to get to and from the hub of the estate, I have passed these emails on to County requesting that these lights stay on for at least another hour. Any other suggestions please email me.

Here we are in the middle of November already counting the days to Christmas. For many this year Christmas will not be quite as joyous as they had hoped. For some the prospect of unemployment, as well as rising heating prices, means there is a chill in more ways than one to our celebrations this year.

Our hearts go out to the bereaved, but this year we particularly remember those who have lost loved ones in car crashes just before the Christmas period. It is a very hard thing to face at this time, and while there is rejoicing at the change of regime in Libya we also know that the price of freedom in places like Afghanistan and Iraq have been paid with the lives of beloved service people from this country. We will remember them on the 13th November this year

One of the reasons why I am a Christian is because I am utterly convinced that Jesus Christ rose from the dead. For me, this means that death is not the end and there is hope for a better life beyond the grave for all those who put their trust in Him.

This year churches across the nation are putting together a special campaign entitled “Christmas begins with Christ”. It is to remind us that at Christmas time we remember that Christ came into the world to give us hope; hope for a better family life as we share things together, but above all eternal hope for life beyond the grave. I do hope you will support this campaign by coming to one of the many services we will be offering but also whenever you see a poster or see the phrase “Christmas begins with Christ” you will remember what it is really supposed to be about.

First of all, following on from our Shoebox Sunday which sent out almost a hundred shoeboxes filled with gifts to children in third world and eastern European countries so they could have a proper Christmas, we will be having a Christingle Service on Sunday 4th December at 10.30 a.m. Christingle is a great occasion because not only does every child receive an orange and a candle, but the money raised goes to help those children in this country who have no homes.

We would also like to welcome you to our Service of Nine Lessons and Carols on 18th December when, again in combination with churches across the country, we are going to attempt to break the world record for carol singing. Although our service starts at 6.30 p.m., from 7.00 p.m. hundreds of thousands of churches will be singing various carols together for a fifteen minute period. We will then

take a count of the numbers who attend the service and this will be sent on to a national organisation who will claim the world record. Why not be part of this unique and special occasion?

On Christmas Eve we will be having our full set of Christmas celebrations but this year we will have two Crib Services one at 2:30pm and a second a 4:00pm as it is so popular. There will be tea coffee and cake served after each one.

For us Christ is more than just a hope. He can be a living reality in our lives. Put your trust in Him and you will find Him to be the closest and best friend you could ever have. He also wants us to look out for others. As the paths freeze over and the winter winds get colder, please be on the look-out for your elderly friends, relatives and neighbours. Even if you do not know them, why not take an opportunity this year to speak to them or even call on them to find out if they are o.k. Also this is a very good time to help the elderly over the road and carry their shopping for them as the paths can be so slippery.

Christmas is never just about us, it’s always about others; it’s always about Jesus. Why not take the opportunity to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas with Him and with others.
