council wants monster trucks confined to freewaystransport

Maribyrnong council has rejected a transport company’s application to operate Super B-Double high productivity freight vehicles (HPFV) in the municipality.

Wettenhall Logistics applied to use � ve of the 30-metre vehicles – dubbed “monster trucks” by Roads Minister Terry Mulder while in opposition – for up to 25 weekly trips to Olympia Street, Tottenham.

Deputy mayor Grant Miles said there was a place for the vehicles, but that was on freeways, not local roads.

“We certainly are not saying we are never going to approve these vehicles on any routes in Maribyrnong, but this particular route I

playgroup to be made ‘homeless’ as uniting church hall goes up for salewilliamstown north

More than 20 families are seeking a new home for their children’s playgroup due to the impending sale of St Stephens Uniting Church at Williamstown North.

Church leaders are selling up to 56 properties statewide to recoup a $56 million debt incurred by last year’s collapse of Acacia College at Mernda North.

Altona mother-of-two Sharon Slater said the playgroup families had been meeting in the Melbourne Road hall for about 14 years.

“We’ve been given word that we would need to be out of the hall by Christmas,” she said.

“So I guess from next year we are homeless.“I guess everyone was a bit disappointed

and I think a bit shellshocked; you don’t normally think of a church being sold.

“I’m just hoping that the group doesn’t then have to fold up, and we’re able to � nd a new home.’’

Ms Slater said the group met for two hours on � ursday mornings, with each family paying a hall-hire fee of $25 per term. � e children are aged up to four.

Uniting Church spokesman Nigel Tapp said there was no set date for when tenants would need to leave.

“� ere have been no dates put on when any party will need to vacate the church,” he said.

“If an elder did put a date on it then they are mistaken.

“Obviously it is an issue which will be determined by when the property is sold.”

A second manse at Yarraville’s Pilgrim Church will also be sold. \

Work is under way on a $4.7 million Maidstone child and family services hub.

� e Dobson Kindergarten and Burns Street Maternal and Child Health Service are being redeveloped into an integrated hub at Rogers Reserve, due to be completed late next year.

Deputy mayor Grant Miles said the project would feature maternal and child health services, kindergartens, a toy library, and

community and consultation rooms. Maidstone resident Wendy Lang said the

community welcome d the new facilities but was concerned at the possible impact on Rogers Reserve. “In 2006 when this was raised, the community indicated it didn’t want it to go further into the reserve and the assurance was given that this wouldn’t occur.”

Ms Lang said the � rst residents heard about the latest plans was at a community barbecue earlier this year when they were presented by

Maribyrnong council with a “done deal”.Cr Miles said there should be no further

Tennis players are tussling with a group of residents over the future use of the disused Williamstown ladies’ bowling green at Dennis Reserve.

Williamstown Central Tennis Club (WCTC) wants to build two more tennis courts , but residents Bonnie Gelman and Rob Lucas have collected more than 180 signatures on a petition calling for the land to be used as a park for everyone and not just an elite group. Adding to the mix, others are calling for the site to be used for a vegetable garden.

WCTC president Michael Greaves said his club did not have enough courts, and hiring outside courts was getting harder with some external courts booked out.

Ms Gelman, who has the backing of the Australian Garden History Society, said Williamstown had enough tennis courts.

“Hobsons Bay council has a fantastic opportunity to re-establish open space at Dennis Reserve for a low price,” she said.

Mayor Angela Altair said the former bowling green had “generated a lot of interest” and a variety of submissions had been received.

“We’re assessing all these and a report will come to the council by way of a brie� ng shortly.” \

Maribyrnong council has defended its decision to spend ratepayers’ money on “ strike-breaker” contractors as workers enter their third week of industrial action.

� e Australian Services Union says undermining council sta� by using contractors won’t stop the work bans that are costing the council revenue from services such as libraries and the Maribyrnong aquatic centre.

ASU organiser Melissa Wainwright said the

Council chief executive Vince Haining said contractors had been called upon to perform extra duties

to maintain services a� ected by the work bans.

“We have an obligation to our ratepayers and community to maintain essential services such as mowing sports � elds, collecting

council was wasting ratepayers’ money at the expense of a three-year-deal concerning fair pay and conditions.

“Our members are angry about contractors coming in and doing this work,” she said.

“Our demands are far from unreasonable. To o� er no real new incentives in the upcoming agreement shows a complete lack of understanding from management.”

Work bans include street and public toilet cleaning, mowing of high-pro� le

rubbish and performing maintenance tasks,” he said. “Council is committed to resolving the issue through negotiation and continues to o� er a generous pay increase to employees.”

Mr Haining would not reveal the cost but said the council was “ready to extend its use of contractors” should the union fail to back down from its demands.

� e ASU has raised occupational health and safety concerns over the use of the contractors and questioned the use of council machinery without adequate induction. \

Transport giant Linfox has stood down two union delegates who spoke out about alleged workplace bullying at Truganina.

More than 100 workers protested outside the Coles distribution centre last Wednesday in what was the second demonstration in three days.

National Union of Workers (NUW) delegates Michael Manolitsis, of Maribyrnong, and Ken Price, of Hillside, were stood down inde� nitely without pay a� er speaking to the media. As Mr Price is an occupational health and safety representative, federal WorkCover agency Comcare is investigating his standing down.

Mr Manolitsis , who has been at the Truganina site for three years, told the Weekly intimidation and bullying had “been going on for way too long”. “We’ve had managers throwing people’s lunches in the bin, keys, private property,’’ he said.

Former casual worker Penny Palmer said that a� er another casual worker called her a “f***ing whore,” they both received no more shi� s. “A full-time person came and asked me if I was OK; he just said that he reported it because that person shouldn’t have spoken to me like that. And then the next day, no work. And the agency didn’t know what happened.”

Two years a� er being diagnosed with breast cancer and undergoing a double mastectomy, Karin Falkenberg is determined to help cancer research.

Not long a� er her diagnosis, Ms Falkenberg and her family were asked by the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre to take part in a research study.

“� ey invited me because, in my history, my sister had cancer of the colon and ovarian cancer and passed away from it,” Ms Falkenberg said. “My grandmother had a mastectomy when she was in her 40s; my grandfather died of prostate.”

Ms Falkenberg and her daughter are now raising awareness of breast cancer by hosting a girls’ night in with a di� erence.

Her daughter, Pia Fonsboel, is inviting the public to a fund-raising night at her Danish furniture warehouse in Williamstown.

Western suburbs’ women have been invited to book a stall for the fund-raiser. About 15 have accepted so far with stalls to include jewellery, plants, false eyelashes, scarves, handbags, children’s clothes and cra� s.

Ms Fonsboel said cancer had been a marking event for the family, but some positives had emerged. “Mum has been

vigilant because her sister died at 49 of several di� erent cancers,” she said. “We’ve been asked to take part in breast cancer research ... and, of course, we want to help others.’’

Fi� y women a day are diagnosed with breast or a gynaecological cancer in Australia, according to the Cancer Council.

achieve when we put our minds to it, whether it be surviving cancer or as a relative or as a friend of someone who’s had cancer,” Ms Fonsboel said.

A mosaic armchair that took more than 100 hours to make will be a centrepiece of Toyota’s annual sculpture exhibition.

� e exhibition, titled All creatures great and small, opens in Port Melbourne tomorrow.

Internationally renowned Altona-based artist Julee Latimer says her artwork , titled Rosaic, is a tribute to her grandmother, Dot Allen.

“It was inspired by my gran because we used to pick rose petals and make rose water when I was little,” she says.

“It’s a mosaic with big roses all over the armchair, so it’s somewhere to sit down and smell the roses.”

� e armchair, which was also selected for the Tesselaar Tulip Festival, will be on display in the Community Spirit Gallery at Toyota’s corporate headquarters until March. Tomorrow night, Toyota will announce the winner of its ‘emerging artist’ award. � e winner will become an artist in residence at a studio in Malaysia.

Ms Latimer, whose work has appeared in international galleries, collections and publications, has also started teaching art classes and workshops in her outdoor studio in Altona. \ GD

A $280 million multi-tower development could soar 24 storeys above the former Le Mans Toyota site in Footscray if given the nod by state Planning Minister Matthew Guy.

An unadvertised Places Victoria planning application for the Hopkins Street site presented last night to the city development special committee of Maribyrnong council seeks approval for a masterplan for eight mixed-use buildings ranging from six to 24 storeys.

� e development proposes 795 dwellings and more than 4000 square metres of commercial space including shops, restaurants and cafes.

A report to the meeting by senior urban planner Je� Owen recommended rejecting support for the proposal on a number of grounds including overshadowing of public space.

“It is considered that the proposal meets the overall intent and objectives of urban consolidation within activity centres and the proposal is generally well conceived . However, the proposal does not adequately

respond to the preferred heights provided for [planning scheme] Amendment C125.”

� e report found insu� cient information was provided to allow the application to be carefully assessed.

“� e heights, setbacks, provision of open space, mix of uses, subdivision and

staging boundaries have not been adequately resolved, and as such it is premature to approve any development on the site.”

� e master planning process was found to lack certainty and

the proposal, just 100 metres from the Maribyrnong River, “fails to

provide an appropriate land use mix, in particular, employment generating uses”.

� e report found existing infrastructure is poor and needs a signi� cant upgrade.

“� e developer should be undertaking these works as part of the development.”

� e site was bought in 2011 for $21 million but Places Victoria has been reportedly considering selling the block for close to $18 million. � e � nal planning decision rests with the minister . \

What kind of ale might Williamstowners have been drinking 150 years ago?

� at’s the question Williamstown publican Scott Meager aims to answer.

While planning the 150th anniversary celebrations for his Steam Packet Hotel, Mr Meager decided to create a commemorative beer at a local brewery and hold a Williamstown Heritage Beer and Cider Festival.

“It started as an idea to get a cra� beer made in a style that may have been made in the 1800s,” he said. “I mean, if you had been to the pub in 1863, what style of beer

would you have been served?” Mr Meager collaborated with Jayne Lewis (both pictured) of Two Birds Brewing in Yarraville and last week they started a labour-intensive 13-hour process to come up with an answer.

Mr Meager hopes the November 23 Willy Beer Fest will become an annual event.

CYCLISTS BREATHING EASIERCYCLIST SAFETY

Maribyrnong cyclists are celebrating a $1.8 million spending package that will improve safety at the area’s most dangerous intersection.

� e state government will spend $1.1 million on the installation of tra� c signals and bike lanterns at Footscray’s Parker and Whitehall streets, the site of � ve serious crashes in the past � ve years.

� e intersection is part of the main route for western suburbs cyclists travelling into the city, with more than 300 cyclists crossing the busy truck route every morning peak period.

A further $700,000 will be spent on green bicycle lanes, linemarking and tra� c signals where Footscray Road intersects with Pearl River Road and Waterfront Way.

� e spending announcement last week by Roads Minister Terry Mulder follows years of pressure from cyclists, politicians and Maribyrnong council, citing safety concerns about the Whitehall- Parker streets intersection.

� e council wrote to VicRoads in June

arguing better safety measures would encourage more cyclists and cut down on road congestion.

Greens MP Colleen Hartland said she ha d been campaigning for two years for the intersection to be � xed as part of her Bike West project.

“It is unfortunate that it’s taken a number of cyclists getting seriously hurt for the government to act.”

Ms Hartland said signals at the Footscray slip-lanes were welcome,

but she described these as simply “tinkering on the edges of the real problem” – � xing the bike path across Shepherd Bridge.

Western suburbs Liberal MP Bernie Finn said the improvements

were designed to make this intersection safer, “particularly for cyclists who historically have a di� cult time cutting through tra� c, due to the high volume”.

VicRoads regional director Patricia Liew said work on the 2013-14 bicycle program projects would begin early next year and be completed by mid-2014. \ BM

Union Work Bans May Disrupt Council ServicesEmployee Unions at Council are currently enacting selective work bans. Residents are advised that some Council services may be affected. As these work bans are selective they may impact on amenity or service delivery without Council being able to provide prior notice to residents.

Council will make every effort to minimise any disruption to services and programs for residents and the community.

The work bans have been imposed after the unions rejected Council’s offer of a 3.2 per cent pay increase or a minimum $40 per week increase. A range of other benefits are included in Council’s offer, which compares favourablyto both the CPI rate of 2.4 per cent and the State Government target of a 2.5 per cent increase.

Car park access row brewsfootscray

Western Hospital has slammed the door on negotiations over access to a new car park residents say poses a danger to their Footscray street.

A petition presented to last week’s council meeting opposing the Eleanor Street car park access point was signed by 339 people. � ey say about 1000 extra car trips a day will impact on the safety of children attending St John’s Primary School.

� e council originally sought access to the new 282-space car park at the former works depot to be via Gordon Street, but was unable to reach agreement with Western Health for access across a small parcel of its site.

� e council rejected a proposal for the access to be traded for parking at cheaper rates than it intended to charge.

Of the 850 parking spaces at Western Hospital, up to 780 are used by sta� , leaving less than 10 per cent for patients and visitors.

Western Health executive director of operations Russell Harrison said the decision on the Eleanor Street entry and exit point resolve d the matter.

“Western Health has � nished formal discussions with the Maribyrnong council and looks forward to the expansion of car parking options in the Western Hospital precinct,” he said.

Residents argue an extra 1000 car trips on Eleanor Street could impact on

patient safety as ambulances face heavier tra� c trying to reach the emergency department.

Deputy mayor Grant Miles said the council ha d not received

any objections from emergency services.

Ambulance Victoria group manager Graeme Parker said: “We do not believe that it will impact on our operations.”

But the ambulance union is writing to the council, raising concerns over lack of consultation.

Ambulance Employees Australia (Victoria) general secretary Steve McGhie said ambulances trying to reach the Western Hospital emergency department might be obstructed.

“ One would think that the main entrance should be o� Gordon Street,” he said.

A single mother and court reporter from Laverton has had her debut poetry collection – with painted illustrations by her 11-year-old daughter – picked up by Apple iBooks.

Jennifer Simmonds, whose daughter Gabrielle (both pictured) is in grade 5 at Seabrook Primary School, said their book titled Just Words delved into dark secrets hidden behind the doors of suburbia.

But she said her book was also about hope and joy, and proved that an older single mum from Laverton could do anything.

Ms Simmonds said she drew inspiration from life and the court system where she works three days a week.

“I just think I got tired of not saying what some of life is really like,” she said about her motivation to write.

“People are always putting on faces and fronts and facades, but you don’t know what goes on behind the closed doors or how somebody’s feeling when they’re smiling.

“ I walk six kilometres a day and I’m always looking at these gorgeous houses, for example, in Altona, and thinking, yeah, but what goes on behind those doors.

“And then you see something up for sale and you think, did they divorce, did someone

die, are they just moving on, did they have to sell because they can’t a� ord the house?

“No one knows anybody’s story. Don’t judge because you don’t know.”

Ms Simmonds said she also hoped that by publishing a book, she would inspire others to tap into their talent.

“ Everybody has got some sort of talent or some sort of gi� and whatever that creativity is, you’re meant to be sharing it.

“Laverton and the western suburbs are slowly gaining recognition for its arts.”

Gabrielle’s artwork has been recognised with awards from Altona’s Bayside Festival and the Royal Melbourne Show. \ GD

A daunting trip to a distant land is the inspiration behind the debut single by local musicians �e Hackkets.

Mexico / LA, which will be launched at �e Reverence Hotel next week, captures vocalist and songwriter Stuart Flenley’s nervousness about an impending overseas �ight.

Flenley said he had a blast writing the song, a follow-up to his �rst song �understorm Blues.

“If it wasn’t for my bandmates in �e Hackkets [pictured] I wouldn’t have written those two tunes.”

�e band, featuring members with and without disability, was brought together more than a decade ago as part of Footscray Community Arts Centre’s Artlife program.

With more than 200 gigs to their name,

their debut single is highly anticipated. �e single was recorded by Robin Waters, who also plays with Melbourne bands �e Boat People and Machine Translations.

Waters said the single was a taste of things to come for �e Hackkets album, due out next

year.“All the members have distinct styles to their music; we can’t wait to share the rest of the songs with everyone,” he said.

Singer Victoria Cini, inspired by Pink, Kelly Clarkson and

Madonna, said she had always loved songwriting and being part of

�e Hackkets. “It’s a mixed bag of lollies. Recording tops it all, it’s grouse.”

Formed in 1993 as a merger of �ve schools, Essendon Keilor College has had its share of impressive achievements over that time. We are well known for the high quality of our performing arts and football programs.

There are few cars in these uber cautious, cookie-cutter days that leave you smiling. �ese are the ones that are

genuine fun to drive, that make you feel good and give you the idea you’re a better driver than you are. Mazda’s MX5 is one. I also fondly recall getting sideways in Honda’s S2000 and a magic cold winter morning in the Otways in a Cobra.

Now there’s Peugeot’s 208 GTi. What a fantastic little car this is. Slide in and feel the seat cuddle up, absolutely one of the most comfortable seats in the biz. Notice the tiny steering wheel and the six-speed manual shi�. No auto available. And all the red highlights – there’s even a slim red stripe running along the length of the seatbelts. �is has to be about the sportiest cabin this side of $300,000 and it’s nicely �tted and �nished too.

But it’s in the driving where the GTi comes together. If you’re not thoroughly into the act of driving it will be totally wasted on you but if you are, well it’s about the best thing you can have short of a tra�c-free drive through the Italian Alps in someone else’s Lotus.

�e controls are direct and fast. �e steering, although light enough to park with ease, is beautifully in touch and pin sharp. �e gearbox is fantastic. You can shi� so fast from second to third, always the acid test of a sporty manual, that you’ll get a chirp. Williamstown has lured home-grown talent Mitch Banner back to the Victorian Football League.

Banner, the 2008 Barry Round medallist for best and fairest at the Western Jets and a TAC Cup team of the year member, has signed with the Seagulls for the next two seasons.

Banner played 19 AFL games with Port Adelaide before being delisted at the end of the 2012 season.

He crossed the Nullarbor to South Fremantle in the WAFL, averaging 27 disposals a game and booting 33 goals to � nish seventh in the Sandover Medal.

“At 23 years of age, we believe he will add considerable class to our mid� eld and is a proven goalkicker,” Seagulls football manager Chris Dixon said.

“Mitch’s signing further illustrates our strong alignment with the Western Jets .”

Meanwhile, Spotswood has appointed homegrown product Tom Langlands to replace Chris O’Keefe as player-coach of the Western Region Football League powerhouse.

Yarraville-Seddon has named former AFL player Jesse Smith as its new coach.

Altona has marched into Yarraville-Footscray and shown it who’s the boss of western suburbs bowls.

� e A’s returned with a convincing 86-63 win to give the newly promoted Combine a taste of what to expect in its � rst season back in the premier division.

A’s skip Brett Dodd said it was always sweet to get one over the neighbours.

“Altona and Yarraville-Footscray have been pretty big rivals over the years,” he said. “� ey like to knock o� Altona ... vice versa, we don’t like losing to them.

“� ey’re always big games. It doesn’t matter where the sides are on the ladder, they’re always pretty even games. We kicked away a bit at the end, but they were right in it for most of the day.”

� e A’s claimed three of the four rinks, with Brad Peck the biggest winner, by 13 shots over Ray Coulter.

Peck’s rink has been the stand-out for the A’s in the opening three rounds.

“He’s on � re and he’s got a good rink behind him,” Dodd said. “� ey’re de� nitely our strongest rink, on form and on paper.

“If we can keep it tight, they generally get the job done most weeks. Pecky’s probably the in-form player in the whole side at the moment.”

Peck, a former Tasmanian, piqued the interest of the A’s a� er skipping for his home

state. He has spent � ve seasons with the A’s, becoming one of the more dependable players in the team and a well-liked � gure in the clubhouse.

Williamstown Wolves have yet to hit top gear but remain undefeated in Baseball Victoria’s summer league division 2 season.

� e Wolves made it three wins in succession with a 12-4 win over Port Melbourne on Sunday.

Wolves manager Dean Marnell described it as a spotty performance.

“A win’s a win and we’ll take it, but we’re not playing that well,” he said. “� ank God it’s not � nals time because we’re not clinical, put it that way.”

� e Wolves’ batters got hot in two of the nine innings – � ve runs in the second and six in the seventh – but endured a rough patch in between.

Bill Millar, a new recruit from St Kilda, was the most reliable with three hits. He won the Stan Camov Medal for MVP on the day.

“He’s a local boy so he came down and did a pre-season with us,” Marnell said.

“I liked what I saw. He hits the ball hard, he’s a big strong lad and in his � rst two games in the twos he was hitting the ball well, so we gave him his opportunity today and he killed it.

“He got three hits, but he hit four balls on the nose and was the stand-out for us today.”

Williamstown Wolves will welcome star import Russell Moldenhauer to the pack this week. Moldenhauer, who hails from San Antonio, is a household name to college baseball fans in his native Texas. He has spent six years in the Washington Nationals minor league system. Wolves manager Dean Marnell said his side lacked a true home-run hitter, and that’s exactly what he expects to get in Moldenhauer. “Our on-base percentage is really good so if we can get on for this guy and he can drive us in, even better,” he said. “He’s a power hitter, he hits the long ball and we don’t really have anyone at the club like that. ”

Dean was the mainstay of the innings.

“It was a really good e� ort from him to lead from the front and take on the responsibility of holding the innings together as the stand-in captain,” Harrison said.

Casey-South Melbourne hardly got a look-in, with the Swans bowled out for 104 in 31.2 overs.

For the Bulldogs, four bowlers took multiple wickets: Haber� eld (2-15), Michael Kelly (2-28), Sunam Gautam (2-19) and Lucas Dredge (3-6).

“� ere’s a lot of variety and a lot of depth in our bowling,” Harrison said.

“� at’s the strength of it – when one guys doesn’t get them, hopefully another guy does.

“It’s good that they’re all taking their turn. It’s not one bloke getting a heap of wickets every week.”
