MGT 300 CITIZENSHIP AND SERVICE LEARNING (CASL)

Course Purpose/Catalog Description: Prerequisites: 30 credit hours, concurrent registration in MGT 340. This service component

incorporates community service with classroom instruction in Management to provide an integrative learning experience that

addresses the practice of citizenship and promotes an awareness of and participation in public affairs. Includes 40 hours of service

that benefits an external community organization, agency, or public service provider. Approved service placements and assignments

will vary; a list of approved placements and assignments is available from the instructor and the Citizenship and Service Learning

Office. May be repeated but no more than two hours of service learning may count toward graduation.

Course Objectives: 1. Expose students to the needs of the larger society

2. Engage students in addressing local issues and needs in the community

3. Contribute to improving the quality of life for people in the community

4. Connect classroom theory to real-world conditions

5. Provide opportunity for student self-esteem enhancement

6. Provide opportunity for student to gain valuable practical experience related to academic area of interest

7. Provide opportunity for student to network with professionals and build a resume/portfolio

Grading Criteria: The final course grade will be assigned using information from three sources: (a) a final written report of the CASL experience

submitted by the student, (b) a report received from the CASL site supervisor concerning the student’s work performance and (c) 40

hours of service performed.

Each student is required to submit a final written report to Dr. LaPreze including a minimum of one paragraph on each of the

following topics:

a description of the CASL work site and duties/tasks performed during the required 40 hours of service

observances on the community partner’s practices concerning:

1. planning

2. organizational design and structure

3. leadership styles and effectiveness

4. motivation techniques utilized

5. decision making styles utilized by managers

6. utilization of work teams or groups

7. human resource practices (planning, recruitment, selection, training/development, evaluation, etc.)

an evaluation of the overall experience value for the student’s career goals (i.e. how did it help you & what did you gain from

this experience, what were the best parts of the experience and what were the worst parts of the experience, etc.)

comments on improvement of the CASL experience in general and this particular work site in specific.

This final report should be submitted to Dr. LaPreze on the Wednesday, May--5/14. It should be a minimum of 1 page and a

maximum of 2 pages, word-processed, double-spaced. You may either deliver the paper in person, put it in the holder on my office

door, or submit it via email.

FINAL DROP DATE

The final drop date for this semester is April 11. If students withdraw from a class starting with week 10 and through the next to last

week, the instructor may assign either a grade of W of F. The default grade will be W. Instructors may change that grade to F if the

student was failing the class when they dropped. If a student stops attending this class, but does not follow proper procedure for

dropping the class, the student will receive a failing grade and will also be financially obligated.
