Departmental Introduction Summary

As a dynamic and highly innovative public-sector university in Pakistan, CIIT has made major strides in the past few years in achieving its cherished mission of imparting quality education in diverse disciplines to students at an affordable price. Our Department of Management Science now offers business programs with various specialization areas at both the bachelors and masters levels. We have trained thousands of students who have gone on to make careers inside and outside Pakistan.

Our pioneering academic programs cover key business and management disciplines such as human resource management, marketing, accounting, finance, banking, business economics, energy management, project management and information management.

We are one of the few Departments of Management Science in Pakistan which are presently in the position

to offer MS programs leading to the award of a doctoral degree. Our business curricula are comparable in standard to those which are being applied in reputable Pakistani and foreign universities. Our objective is not only

to familiarize our students with current knowledge in their subject areas but also to equip them with the good analytical, creative and communication skills needed in order to manage the complex challenges and pressures

they will encounter in their professional lives as managers and administrators. By emphasizing a holistic, practical and ethical approach to learning, and by encouraging an informal, open, creative

and student-friendly learning environment, we believe that our students will be well prepared for meeting the demands placed on them by their future employers, the economy and society at large.

Our Department’s strength rests on the quality of our faculty. We are proud of the fact that all our presently approximately 60 faculty members are in possession of advanced business degrees and several hold doctoral degrees from reputable foreign universities. All our faculty members have professional experience working in private or public organizations and some are acknowledged researchers with several publications to their name. Several of them have presented papers at international events hosted outside Pakistan.

The Department of Management Sciences strives to contribute to the broader social role of the CIIT in providing high quality academic programs characterized by cutting edge technologies and modern managerial practices. It was first established at CIIT Wah in 2001. Later peer-departments at Lahore, Islamabad, Abbottabad, Attock & Sahiwal were established in 2002, 2003, 2004 & 2007, respectively.

The Department of Management Sciences at CIIT has emerged as the most dynamic and vibrant department.

Its current enrollment is among the highest in CIIT. The Department of Management Science solely is



committed with the objective to keep the knowledge of students at par with the market trends. To trace its origin, Department of Management Sciences was established in 2001 at Islamabad. At present, the Department of Management Sciences has around 4000 students enrolled in all six campuses and they are over 213 full time Faculty members. All the six campuses offer programs as approved by Department of Management Sciences

1) Bachelor of Science in Business Studies

Program Overview

Bachelors of Business Studies program at CIIT has been initiated for the prospective students who wish

to undertake business studies and explore their abilities outside their non business educational thinking box. This two years program will meet the increasing demand for advanced business education which

will not only combine text book learning with case study methodology but will also expose students to global business environment by facilitate development of their conceptual skills as well as personal growth. The graduates of this program will have the clear understanding of financial theories and markets, the financial reporting system, and financial analysis, will be able to identify customer needs

and participate in the process of developing products and services to meet these needs. On completion,

the students will actually be able to put knowledge to work and will feel comfortable performing the responsibilities of a leader, critical thinking, communication and interpersonal skills, management, marketing, finance and global business.

The entry requirements include 14 years of education in relevant field with minimum 2.0/4.0 CGPA (semester system) or 50% marks (annual system) from an accredited educational institution. Valid NTS

test score as per CIIT policy. The degree is awarded with a passing CGPA of at least 2.0/4.0. 2) Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Finance

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Accounting and Finance is designed for students wishing to pursue a career in accounting and finance, either as an accountant in private practice or employed in industry, commerce

or the public sector. It allows students to specialize solely in Professional Accounting, or both Professional Accounting and Applied Finance and provides them with the knowledge and technical skills they need to succeed in the accounting/finance field. Accounting and Finance graduates will find employment at supervisory and mid carrier executive levels in a wide range of business careers such as accounting, auditing, taxation, finance, banking, investment, corporate planning, strategic business planning, treasury, information systems, management consulting and forensic accounting. Faculty at the

Department of Management Sciences is a blend of Professional FCMAs, FCAs & Doctoral Degrees, in



various fields of Management, Finance, Islamic Banking, Operations & Research etc. They bring to classrooms their diversified experience and expertise that help students broaden their view and deepen their understanding of the contemporary business issues and practices.

The entry requirements include Intermediate or equivalent with minimum 50% marks from an accredited institution. Valid NTS test score as per CIIT policy. The maximum duration for completion of

this degree is 12 semesters. The degree is awarded on completion of minimum 135 credit hours with a passing CGPA of at least 2.0/4.0

3) Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Program Overview

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration program at CIIT provides students the option to specialize in any of the different areas including Marketing, Finance, Human Resources Management, Entrepreneurship, International Business, Supply Chain Management and Banking and Finance.

Career Outcomes BS (BA) program prepares students for the competitive world of business by involving them to the real life business experiences and has been designed to:

familiarize students with the fundamental body of theoretical and applied knowledge of business

4) Bachelor of Science in Economics Program Overview

Bachelor of Science in Economics program is designed to equip graduates with comparative knowledge

of economic theory and applied economics. This program offers a combination of theoretical and practical courses with economic application to illustrate their abilities at workplace. The degree is based around the core of micro and macroeconomics, focusing on behavior of individuals and firms and broader issues such as employment and inflation. The graduates of this program will be able to work as



economists in public or private sector; commercial banks, NGOs, teaching and other institutions



involved in training, consultancy, research, and policy development and formulation, and further their education by joining research areas in MS/PhD.

The entry requirements include Intermediate or equivalent with minimum 50% marks from an accredited institution and valid NTS test score as per CIIT. The maximum duration for completion of this degree is 12 semesters. The degree is awarded on completion of minimum 132 credit hours with a passing CGPA of at least 2.0/4.0.

1) Master of Science in Management Science

Program Overview

The Master of Science in Management Science program offers a professional graduate course of study designed to provide competency in management and to acquaint the student with a variety of business activities. The specializations offered include: General Management, Finance, Marketing, Information Technology Management, and Business Economics. On successful completion of the course the graduates will have an excellent opportunity in finding employment in areas with a broad, critical and practice – based understanding of Management Sciences disciplines. This knowledge makes them ready for a variety of leadership positions in complex contemporary environments and teaching careers in universities.

The admission requirements include a 16 years degree in the relevant field from an accredited educational institution, with minimum First division (annual system) or CGPA 2.5/4.0 (semester system). No third division or ‘D’ grade (semester system) throughout the academic career. NTS GAT (General) is also required with minimum score of 50.

2) Master of Science in Economics

Program Overview

As the economy continues to expand and diversify, there is growing need for economic expertise for understanding various facets of this increasingly complex e system. Demand for well educated

economics graduates comes from critical business, industry, academia, government and international



development finance institutions. CIIT is well placed to play an important role in leadership positions in complex contemporary catering to these national and global needs by producing high quality economics graduates with MS and PhD degrees. The Graduate Program in Economics would aim to develop the best economics program in the country and in the region.

Career Potential:

On successful completion of the course the graduates will have an excellent opportunity in finding employment in areas with a broad, critical and practice-based understanding of Economics and specialized disciplines. This knowledge makes them ready for a variety of leadership positions in complex contemporary environments and teaching careers in universities.

For admission in MS in Economics I6 years of Education in relevant field with 2.5/4 CGPA or 60% marks

in the annual system is required. 3) Master of Science in Project Management (MSPM)

Program Overview

CIIT's MSPM program will help fill a major gap in project management education and research in Pakistan. It is a well known fact that vast sums of public resources are wasted due to mismanagement of projects, particularly in the social sector. Project failures – as measured with respect to the nonattainment of its goal, and/or cost or schedule overruns – are common in Pakistan. This problem is attributable in part to the lack of project management knowledge of the initiators, planners and implementers of projects as well as the lack of support from researchers in academia and profession who are supposed to highlight gray areas and suggest feasible solutions. Successful project management requires insight into several knowledge areas, for instance, communication management, risk management, cost and time management etc. Yet comparatively few project managers in Pakistan can claim that they have an adequate insight into all these areas. The dearth of project management education, training and research opportunities in Pakistan is the principles cause of this problem.

Career Potential:

On successful completion of the course the graduates will have an excellent opportunity in finding employment in areas with a broad, critical and practice-based understanding of Project Management

and specialized disciplines. This knowledge makes them ready for a variety of leadership positions in

complex contemporary environments and teaching careers in universities.



The admission requirement includes minimum of sixteen years schooling (or equivalent) in a relevant subject: Business Administration, Computer Science, IT, Economics, Engineering, Natural Sciences, Public

Administration and Policy, and Development Studies, with 2.5/4 CGPA (or 60% marks in annual system)

and Excellent English communication skills.

4) Master in Banking & Finance

Program Overview

The primary objective of banking and finance at CIIT is to develop knowledgeable and capable executives and workforce to move quickly to key positions in the financial services sector and to demonstrate the skills necessary to tackle problems within the complex world of international finance

and banking. Also it is to prepare and implement findings directed at the evaluation of corporate, market, investment and risk management situations.

Career Prospects:

On successful completion of the course the graduates will have an excellent opportunity in finding employment in areas with a broad, critical practice-based understanding of Banking and Finance and specialized disciplines. This knowledge makes them ready for a variety of leadership positions in complex contemporary environments and teaching careers in universities.

The admission requirement includes I6 years of Education in relevant field with 2.5/4 CGPA or 60% marks in the annual system. Candidates who have more than 5 years of professional experience may be exempted from GAT.

5) Master of Science in Strategic Marketing

Program Overview

Strategic Marketing at CIIT allows students to develop skills in dealing with strategic marketing problems found in both profit and nonprofit settings. The focus is on a developing a framework for strategic marketing plans with emphasis on consumer and environmental analysis. Market segmentation, product positioning, marketing responsiveness, and competitive reaction will be. Furthermore, the program will offer insights into modern strategic marketing, combining topical and practical knowledge with an emphasis on the ability to sense, shape and prepare to meet the needs of the future. Taking a strategic

approach, it brings marketing into the 21st century, modernizing it and putting it on a more scientific



footing, while reflecting upon major new and escalating challenges that confront business and marketing professionals.

On successful completion of the course the graduates will have an excellent opportunity in finding employment in areas with a broad, critical and practice-based understanding of Strategic Marketing and specialized disciplines. This knowledge makes them ready for a variety of leadership positions in complex contemporary environments and teaching careers in universities.

6) MBA (Three and a Half Years)

Program Overview

The three–and–half year MBA program will meet the increasing demand for advanced business education, which will not only combine text book learning with case study methodology but also expose students to an environment which will facilitate development of their conceptual skills as well as personal growth.

Program Educational Objectives The basic objective of this program is to provide the students with knowledge of business. Students will

be able to understand financial theories and markets, the financial reporting system, and financial analysis, will be able to identify customer needs and participate in the process of developing products

and services to meet these needs. They have come to know about production models and distribution systems, and their role in the value creation process.

Courses in the MBA program are designed to introduce students to the various areas of business such as accounting, finance, marketing, human resources, operations management, etc.

The minimum duration for completion of this degree is 7 semesters. The degree is awarded on completion of minimum 99 credit hours.

7) MBA (One and a Half years)

Program overview:

Master of business administration (18 months) program has been specially designed for enhancing the managerial and leadership skills of those business graduates who have already completed their 4 year

BBA / BS (BA) program from an accredited university. Thus, the program focuses on practical decision



making and policy formulation for establishing and managing the modern day businesses. The CIIT business graduates will perform a leading transformation role through their sate-role-art entrepreneurial and managerial skills. The program comprises of courses that inculcate critical thinking

and practice based understanding of managerial processes.

To meet the increasing demand for advanced business education form qualified applicants, CIIT initiated

its “fast track” program in 2007. The program differs from our conventional MBA program in that, it is of

one and half year duration and open exclusively to students in possession of a 4 year bachelor degree in business administration. Content-wise, the curriculum includes material more advanced that which students were acquainted with their undergraduate programs and extensive use is made of the case method of teaching.

Career Outcomes: Our program will successfully prepare graduates for

meeting the diverse professional challenges in all organizations where the applications of business skill are required. The students may choose any one of the market orientated specialization fields from the eight major areas: Marketing, finance, human resource management, international business, information technology, operations managements and banking

The admission requirement includes a 16-years degree in the relevant field from an accredited educational institution with first division (annual system) or minimum CGPA 2.5/4.0 (semester system).

No third division or D-grade throughout career. GAT (General) with 50% marks minimum is also required.

8) PhD In Management Science

Program Overview

The program addresses the need to train students to develop and sharpen management theories to enhance their contribution to management education, research and practice. Students acquire advanced knowledge of literature and theory in their area of their specializations and the business and management field overall. They also gain theoretical and practical knowledge of advanced research skills, essential for publishing in leading academic journals. The PhD program furnishes opportunities to its graduates in research, academia, business, and government worlds. Specializations offered include:

A PhD scholar shall have to complete 18 credit hours of graduate level course

work from approved scheme of studies and minimum 9 credit hours of PhD Thesis. The duration of
