Speaker showcase 2: How to Say Anything to Anyone: Setting Expectations for Powerful Working Relationships Leadership

Shari Harley, MA, principal, The Harley Group International, Denver

You have a request for one of your doctors, but you don’t know how to ask, so you don’t. You have some feedback for a nurse, but you don’t know what to say, so you don’t say anything. One of your colleagues isn’t pulling her weight. It’s impacting you, but you don’t say anything. Speaking up when we are frustrated is hard and, as a result, most of us don’t. Instead, we either tell other people (also known as gossip) or we say nothing, and relationships become strained. Instead, you can say anything to anyone and make it easy. You just need to lay the ground work to do so, and most of us don’t.

This session will provide you with the knowledge to:

• Describe how to build trust throughout your office, making it easier to say hard things

• Find out what coworkers need from you so you don’t have to guess

• Tell others what you need, making it more likely that your needs are met

• Build effective teamwork by understanding each temperament’s strengths and motivators

Friday, Feb. 8 (cont.) 202: Where Did My Members Go? Get More Members. Keep More Members. Leadership

Shari Harley, MA, principal, The Harley Group International, Denver

Members provide us with clear feedback: They join or they don’t; they renew their membership or they don’t; they get involved or they don’t. Unfortunately, when members are dissatisfied, they don’t tell us – instead, they vote with their feet. Members leave, and we never know why. Get to the heart of what your members need and why they hire or fire you.

This session will provide you with the knowledge to:

• Stop the revolving door of member turnover and never be “fired” by a member

Some chapters may already have developed relationships with local and national media members while others may have dipped their toes in the social media world. This interactive session will explain how MGMA-ACMPE interacts with media members and will highlight the Association’s social media efforts. You will have access to speaker presentations, the attendee roster and more. This site gives you access to the most up-to-date information and enables you to download session presentations before you arrive in Denver or while on site. You can even bring your laptop or tablet to take advantage of the wireless Internet access available in the meeting rooms to access the presentations and reduce the amount of printed material you have to haul around.

DressBusiness casual attire is appropriate for all conference functions, including the receptions. Weather in February can be cold and hotel meeting rooms cool. Dressing in layers is best for maximum comfort and varying room temperatures.

FacultyMGMA-AMCPE reserves the right to change faculty or modify conference content.

Altitude sicknessAltitude sickness occasionally impacts attendees traveling to Denver. Symptoms may include throbbing headache, lack of appetite, nausea, dizziness and fatigue. In many instances, symptoms don’t appear until you have been at altitude for a day or more.

When arriving in Denver, it is recommended that you avoid alcohol, large meals and intense activity. Be sure to drink plenty of liquids; a diet high in carbohydrates such as bread, cereals and pastas has also been known to help. If you are experiencing altitude-sickness symptoms, an over-the-counter pain reliever may provide some relief. Please contact a doctor if your symptoms become severe.
