    PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Leaves are the food making factories of green plants. They come in many different shapes and

sizes. Leaves can be simple or compound. Simple leaves consists of a single leaf blade

connected by a petiole to the stem. A compound leaf is made up of separate leaflets attached by

    petiole to the stem.

    https://youtu.be/UPBMG5EYydo

  • 14

    (lamina=

    leaf blade)

    Parts of a leaf

During the process of photosynthesis, leaves absorb light from the sun. There are tiny holes on

the surface of leaves that allow air and water vapour to go in and out of the leaves. These holes

are known as stomata. Plants take in air rich in carbon dioxide through the stomata. The roots of

the plant absorb water and nutrients from the soil and transport them to the stem. The stem then

transports the water and the nutrients to the leaves. The leaves use carbon dioxide and water to

make glucose (sugar) in the presence of chlorophyll and sunlight. The extra glucose is stored in

the form of starch and can be used later. Oxygen is produced during photosynthesis.

  • 15

    Photosynthesis

    TEST FOR PRESENCE OF STARCH

To test the presence of starch in Green Leaves we use iodine solution. Starch turns blue black

when it comes in contact with Iodine.

Pour a few drops of dilute iodine solution on the boiled leaf. The leaf becomes blue-black which

proves the presence of starch in it.

    FACTORS AFFECTING PHOTOSYNTHESIS:

    1. The more the sunlight and carbon dioxide available to a green plant, the faster the rate of

    photosynthesis.

    2. The rate of photosynthesis is the highest in green plants at 30° Celsius.

    3. The lesser the amount of water, the slower the rate of photosynthesis. Without enough

water, plants may lose their leaves or even die.

Q1. Fill in the blanks using the words from the help box.

Oxygen carbon dioxide photosynthesis water food- making sunlight

    chlorophyll glucose starch blue black

  • 16

Leaves are the ___________________factories of green plants. Leaves contain a green substance

called _________________. Leaves absorb ________________ from the air. Roots absorb

_____________ and other nutrients from the soil. Chlorophyll converts water and carbon dioxide

into _________________in the presence of___________________. This process is called

    _____________________. ______________________ is produced as a by-product of

photosynthesis. Iodine solution can be used to test the presence of ___________. Starch turns

________________ on coming in contact with iodine.

Q2. How does the rate of photosynthesis change on:

    a) Decrease in amount of water ___________

    b) Increase in amount of carbon dioxide and sunlight ____________________

    MAP

A map is a flat drawing of the earth or of any part of it. A map of the world shows the entire

    world at one time.

Most maps include a symbol called a compass rose that shows the four main directions: north,

south, east and west. These are called the cardinal directions.

A compassrose might show intermediate directions too. They are northeast, southeast, southwest

and northwest. Often, abbreviations are used to show the directions on a compass rose.

    MAP SYMBOLS

All maps have a key or a legend in a corner. The legend or key explains the symbols used in a
